In May I was pretty busy with my qualifying exams here at UC Davis, so I decided to rewatch some oldies but goodies. This time I think everyone will be familiar with all these movies. Let’s start with Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Dodgeball (2004), which is quite a funny movie about Ben Stiller, a ruthless gym owner who wants to buy Vince Vaughn’s small gym which is about to go bankrupt. In order to pay off his debts, Vaughn decides to participate in a dodgeball tournament, a rather dodgy sport if one might call it that, with the hopes of winning the cash prize at the end. The cast includes Christine Taylor, Alan Tudyk, Justin Long  and Missi Pyle. If you like comedy I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one!

Dean Parisot’s Galaxy Quest (1999) is an amazing parody that is at the same time a Star Trek homage. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell are the actors who gave life to the crew of the intergalactic spaceship NSEA Protector. Years have passed since the cancelation of the series and now they’re washed-up actors who survive by charging for their appearances in the conventions circuit. However, when an alien race recruits them to fight against a powerful extraterrestrial enemy, everything that was fiction in the old TV show becomes reality. I couldn’t stop laughing the first time I saw this one, and now that I re-watched it I must say all the laughter was still there. A great comedy that might mock Star Trek but at the same time respects the essence of the series. The cast includes Justin Long and Missi Pyle.

Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly directed There’s Something About Mary (1998), a hugely successful comedy about Ben Stiller, a disillusioned man who dreams about finding again his high school prom date, the beautiful Cameron Diaz; in the process he will hire Matt Dillon to track her down and then a series of misunderstandings and unexpected occurrences will begin. With one of the funniest masturbation scenes ever (including the hair gel sequence), this movie is now a part of pop culture and has been referenced by many other movies or series. Irreverent for some, vulgar for others, the Farrelly brothers pushed the boundaries of what an American comedy could be, and the result is a couple of hours of laughing out loud.  

Mike Newell’s Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) is a classic British romantic comedy, in which the eternal bachelor, Hugh Grant, falls in love with an American woman, Andie MacDowell. They meet at a wedding, and they keep running into each other in subsequent weddings, but there is always something preventing them from pursuing a long-term relationship. There are so many hilarious moments in the movie that if I started describing them it would take me the entire post, suffice to say for anyone looking for romance or comedy, you need look no further.

En mayo estaba bastante ocupado con mis qualifying exams aquí en UC Davis, así que decidí volver a ver algunas películas viejitas pero buenas. Esta vez creo que todos estarán familiarizados con todas estas películas. Comencemos con Dodgeball (2004) de Rawson Marshall Thurber, que es una película bastante divertida sobre Ben Stiller, un despiadado propietario de un gimnasio que quiere comprar el pequeño gimnasio de Vince Vaughn que está a punto de quebrar. Para saldar sus deudas, Vaughn decide participar en un torneo de dodgeball, un  bastante arriesgado deporte, si se le puede llamar así, con la esperanza de ganar el premio en efectivo al final. El elenco incluye a Christine Taylor, Alan Tudyk, Justin Long y Missi Pyle. Si te gusta la comedia, estoy seguro de que disfrutarás de esta.

Galaxy Quest (1999) de Dean Parisot es una parodia asombrosa que es al mismo tiempo un homenaje a Star Trek. Sin embargo, cuando una raza alienígena los recluta para luchar contra un poderoso enemigo extraterrestre, todo lo que era ficción en el antiguo programa de televisión se convierte en realidad. No pude dejar de reír la primera vez que la vi, y ahora que la vuelvo a ver, debo decir que toda la risa seguía ahí. Una gran comedia que puede mofarse de Star Trek pero que al mismo tiempo respeta la esencia de la serie. El elenco incluye a Justin Long y Missi Pyle.

Cuatro bodas y un funeral de Mike Newell (1994) es una comedia romántica británica clásica, en la que el eterno soltero Hugh Grant se enamora de una mujer estadounidense, Andie MacDowell. Se conocen en una boda y siguen encontrándose en bodas posteriores, pero siempre hay algo que les impide tener una relación a largo plazo. Hay tantos momentos divertidos en la película que si comenzara a describirlos me llevaría todo el post hacerlo, basta con decir que para cualquiera que quiera romance o comedia, no necesita buscar más.

June Films / películas de junio

And now, in June, we finally have movies in plural (after having only one each month). Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), directed by J.A. Bayona, is a tip of the hat to the first Jurassic Park, there is the element of the island, the dinosaurs getting out of control and a group of people trapped in the wilderness, but the Spanish director also introduces new concepts: this is the first time that we see dinosaurs in an unlikely location such as northern California. Bayona manages to instill suspense in this high-octane action blockbuster, and at the same time, creates interesting adversaries; here the real enemy isn’t necessarily a dinosaur but rather the greed of certain individuals. Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Bryce Dallas Howard reprise their roles from the previous Jurassic World; and seeing Jeff Goldblum again was absolutely amazing. The all-star cast also includes James Cromwell, Toby Jones and Geraldine Chaplin.

Written and directed by Woody Allen, Wonder Wheel (2017) takes us back to the 50s and right into the unhappy life of Kate Winslet (The Reader), a waitress that has lost her optimism and who isn’t attracted to her husband, Jim Belushi. To make things worse, the unexpected arrival of the husband’s daughter, Juno Temple, who is chased by a mobster, adds a dangerous twist to their ordinary and pacific routine. However, the really interesting part is the love triangle triggered by the presence of college student Justin Timberlake (In Time). Although infidelity and unrequited love have been previously explored by the director, Wonder Wheel brings something new, as it offers a more subdued approach to this subject while combining the nostalgia of the 50s with the harsh reality of getting older and living a life that has no excitement at all. Kate Winslet’s performance is impressive and I have to say I really enjoyed the tragic ending.

Being John Malkovich (1999) is Spike Jonze’s masterpiece and arguably Charlie Kaufman’s best script to date. A surreal journey through the darkest corners of the mind and a real celebration of black humor and the absurd, this fascinating and thought-provoking film answers a question probably everyone has asked themselves at least once: “ever wanted to be someone else?”. And the answer is yes, we have all fantasized at some point with the idea of becoming someone else. But if the possibility of becoming someone else, albeit briefly, is real then what are the philosophical implications? What are the consequences? Those are the questions that puppeteer John Cusack (Adult World) must try to answer, as he discovers a portal that takes him inside the mind of actor John Malkovich (The Great Buck Howard). Cusack is no longer in love with his wife Cameron Diaz (Gambit) and quickly falls in love with Catherine Keener, a femme fatale that effectively seduces the puppeteer, the wife and even the Hollywood star. The fantasy elements of the film and the everyday life aspects of the protagonists are seamlessly combined in a tragicomic story that delves deep into the human condition. There are brilliant and unforgettable scenes, like the nightmarish sequence in which John Malkovich goes through his own portal, only to find himself surrounded by an entire universe of Malkovichs. There are certainly many hilarious moments, and each character has a unique and rich personality, I also enjoyed the cameos of other Hollywood actors and the extraordinary and delightfully illogic premise. A true classic, I highly recommend it.

Y ahora, en junio, por fin hay películas en plural (después de tener una sola por mes). Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), dirigida por J.A. Bayona, homenajea al primer Jurassic Park, con el elemento de la isla, los dinosaurios que se descontrolan y con un grupo de personas atrapados en la naturaleza, pero el director español también presenta nuevos conceptos: esta es la primera vez que vemos dinosaurios en un lugar poco probable, como el norte de California. Bayona logra inculcar suspenso en esta película de acción trepidante y, al mismo tiempo, crea adversarios interesantes; aquí el verdadero enemigo no es necesariamente un dinosaurio sino la codicia de ciertos individuos. Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) y Bryce Dallas Howard retoman sus papeles de la anterior Jurassic World; y ver a Jeff Goldblum otra vez fue absolutamente increíble. El elenco estelar también incluye a James Cromwell, Toby Jones y Geraldine Chaplin.

Sin embargo, la parte realmente interesante es el triángulo de amor desencadenado por la presencia del estudiante universitario Justin Timberlake (In Time). Aunque la infidelidad y el amor no correspondido han sido explorados anteriormente por el director, Wonder Wheel aporta algo nuevo, ya que ofrece un enfoque más discreto del tema mientras combina la nostalgia de los 50s con la dura realidad de envejecer y vivir una vida desprovista de emoción. La actuación de Kate Winslet es impresionante y debo decir que realmente disfruté el trágico final.

Being John Malkovich (1999) es la obra maestra de Spike Jonze y posiblemente el mejor guion de Charlie Kaufman hasta la fecha. Un viaje surrealista a través de los rincones más oscuros de la mente y una verdadera celebración del humor negro y de lo absurdo, esta película fascinante y estimulante responde a una pregunta que probablemente todos se han hecho al menos una vez: “¿Alguna vez quisiste ser otra persona?”. Y la respuesta es sí, todos hemos fantaseado en algún momento con la idea de convertirnos en alguien más. Pero si la posibilidad de convertirse en otra persona, aunque brevemente, es real, ¿cuáles son las implicaciones filosóficas? ¿Cuáles son las consecuencias? Esas son las preguntas que el titiritero John Cusack (Adult World) debe tratar de responder, luego de descubrir un portal que lo lleva a la mente del actor John Malkovich (The Great Buck Howard). Cusack ya no está enamorado de su esposa, Cameron Diaz (Gambit), y rápidamente se enamora de Catherine Keener, una femme fatale que efectivamente seduce al titiritero, a la esposa e incluso a la estrella de Hollywood. Los elementos de fantasía de la película y los aspectos de la vida cotidiana de los protagonistas se combinan a la perfección en una historia tragicómica que profundiza en la condición humana. Hay escenas brillantes e inolvidables, como la secuencia de pesadilla en la que John Malkovich pasa por su propio portal, sólo para encontrarse rodeado por un universo entero de Malkovichs. Ciertamente hay muchos momentos hilarantes, y cada personaje tiene una personalidad única y rica, también disfruté los cameos de otros actores de Hollywood y la extraordinaria y deliciosamente ilógica premisa. Un verdadero clásico, lo recomiendo encarecidamente. / películas de junio
