Fairest # 4 - Bill Willingham & Phil Jimenez

Half a decade ago, I decided to buy the first 3 issues of Fairest. And I don’t regret that decision, the only regret is that I didn’t get the rest of the series. A Fables spinoff, Fairest gave Bill Willingham enough freedom to play with characters that were already familiar to the readers, in settings and situations that could not be fully explored in the main Vertigo ongoing series.

“Man on a Ledge” (published in Fairest #4, August 2012) is the fourth chapter of “Wide Awake”, a saga that reunites characters such as Red Rose, Snow Queen and Ali Baba. As we can see in “Prince of Thieves”, “Run” and “Party Crasher”, Willingham delves deep into the past of these characters, and now he sheds some new light on Ali Baba.

What’s the secret origin of the Prince of Thieves? Willingham shares with us the story of a man who had everything: lands, gold, women, etc., and maybe because he had everything he felt as if he had nothing. So in order to feel alive again “Ali Baba turned to thieving […] he had a natural gift for it”. But even though he is a resourceful man, this time Ali Baba might not be able to escape from the Snow Queen’s icy dungeons.

Once again Phil Jimenez does a magnificent job as a penciler. A master of composition, Jimenez is capable of conveying tension and dramatism in the confrontation between Ali Baba and Snow Queen. 

The double page spreads are also quite striking, Jimenez chooses a vertical approach to recount the misfortunes of the Snow Queen and a big, sweeping panoramic view of Snow Queen’s successful role as the leader of an army of trolls and other creatures.

As usual, inkers Andy Lanning and Andrew Pepoy wonderfully complement Jimenez’s pencils. This is the first issue of the series in which we have a guest penciler: Steve Sadowski provides us with a couple of very good pages, that seamlessly blend in with the rest. And at last, but certainly not least, Adam Hughes comes up with an impressive cover, in which a certain erotic element seems to redefine the reader’s expectations.

Hace media década, decidí comprar los primeros 3 números de Fairest. Y no me arrepiento de esa decisión, de lo único de lo que me arrepiento es no haber adquirido el resto de la colección. Fairest salió de las páginas de Fables y le dio a Bill Willingham suficiente libertad para jugar con personajes que ya eran familiares para los lectores, en entornos y situaciones que no podían ser del todo exploradas en la serie principal de Vertigo.

"Hombre al filo" (publicado en Fairest # 4, agosto de 2012) es el cuarto capítulo de "Del todo despiertos", una saga que reúne personajes como Red Rose, Snow Queen y Ali Baba. Como podemos ver en “Prince of Thieves”, “Run” y “Party Crasher”, Willingham profundiza en el pasado de estos personajes, y ahora arroja nueva luz sobre Ali Baba.

¿Cuál es el origen secreto del Príncipe de los Ladrones? Willingham comparte con nosotros la historia de un hombre que lo tenía todo: tierras, oro, mujeres, etc., y tal vez porque lo tenía todo se sentía como si no tuviera nada. Así que para sentirse vivo de nuevo "Ali Baba se volvió ladrón [...] él tenía un don natural para ello". Pero aunque es un hombre ingenioso, esta vez Ali Baba podría no ser capaz de escapar de las mazmorras heladas de la Reina de las Nieves.

Una vez más, Phil Jimenez hace un magnífico trabajo como dibujante. Un maestro de la composición, Jimenez es capaz de transmitir tensión y dramatismo en la confrontación entre Ali Baba y Snow Queen.

Las páginas dobles son también espectaculares. Jimenez escoge un enfoque vertical para contar las desgracias de la Reina de la Nieve y una gran y unaa vista panorámica del exitoso desempeño de Snow Queen como líder de un ejército de trolls y otras criaturas.

Como de costumbre, los entintadores Andy Lanning y Andrew Pepoy complementan maravillosamente los lápices de Jimenez. Este es el primer número de la serie en el que tenemos un dibujante invitado: Steve Sadowski nos proporciona un par de páginas muy buenas, que combinan sin problemas con las demás. Y por último, pero ciertamente no menos importante, Adam Hughes nos presenta una portada impresionante, en la que un cierto elemento erótico parece redefinir las expectativas del lector.

There were some promising first issues in September, like Doom Patrol #1. Cinema Purgatorio continues to impress me, but my favorite issue of the month was Silver Surfer #6. And now, without further ado, here are September comics as per solicitations:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1

Each story has its own cover by the series artist and there is also an Ancient Tome Premium edition limited to 1000 copies.

DOOM PATROL #1 BOLLAND CVR

JACKED #1 (MR)

Eric Kripke (creator of Supernatural) teams up with Vertigo veterans John Higgins (HELLBLAZER) and Glenn Fabry (PREACHER) to bring you a very Vertigo take on the modern superhero in this six-issue miniseries. Josh Jaffe, a neurotic family man mid-midlife crisis, buys an online 'smart pill' to increase his focus and jolt him out of his slump. But to Josh's surprise, the pill gives him incredible strength and power-but its cost is that it's extremely addictive. Free Country: A Tale of the Children’s Crusade - Gaiman, Bachalo & Snejbjerg

“They say every adult has successfully killed at least one child”, even if only metaphorically. Becoming an adult often means getting rid of our natural curiosity and the sense of wonder that is always present during our formative years. Lacan is even more radical when he explains what happens to us when we enter into the symbolic order: there is a part of us that is left behind, a castration takes place, one that affects all men and women (and not only the male population, as suggested by Freud).

Free Country: A Tale of the Children’s Crusade (Mark Buckingham)

The dividing line between childhood and adulthood was rarely, if ever, explored in superhero titles. So it’s no surprise that Vertigo –DC’s line for mature readers– would attempt to do that, in one way or another. With a great sense of humor, Neil Gaiman explains in his foreword what was the origin of The Children’s Crusade: “all the Vertigo writers and editors were there on a mysterious rural retreat. It seemed unlikely to me, like herding cats. We didn’t flock together naturally, but perhaps this would be our opportunity. Somebody not me had pointed out that if there was one thing that all the Vertigo titles in question had in common, it was that they each had a child in them. So it was decided that the first –and as far as I recall the last– Vertigo crossover would revolve around children”.

The Children’s Crusade (John Bolton)

It was up to Neil Gaiman to give shape to this peculiar experiment, and so he did, in two remarkable, poignant and thought-provoking chapters. The opening sequence takes place in Flaxdown, a nice and quiet English town. One day, all of a sudden, the children are gone… not one, not a dozen: all children disappear. Nobody understands what is going on, there are no clues and, it seems, there is no hope of ever finding them again. That’s when the Dead Boy Detectives decide to take the case. Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine came from the pages of The Sandman; these kids were very keen on classic mystery novels and noir films, and as ghosts they were free to roam the streets and go to places inaccessible even for adults.

Soon the Dead Boy Detectives find out the whereabouts of the missing children. “East of the sun and west of the moon, somewhere between the endless summer afternoons of childhood and the shifting clouds of magic, lies the land called Free Country”. But Free Country isn’t simply a haven for lost children, like Neverland was in the Peter Pan tales, in fact, its origin is quite sinister.

Neil Gaiman’s comprehensive knowledge of ancient history and his love for fairy tales are the foundations of Free Country. With a spellbinding ability and a unique sensibility, the British writer starts with a dark chronicle of the middle age, one that feels uncannily real. After decades of failure, an ominous monk pretends to explain why the troops of god have only known defeat during the Crusades. All soldiers are men, and therefore sinners, so in order to take Jerusalem, it was necessary to send an army of pure and innocent combatants: an army of children. And all across Europe, thousands of children accept the sacred duty and willingly enroll in this final crusade. However, the monk’s plan has nothing to do with the holy war. He just wants to sell the children as slaves, and so he does. More than half of the children die during the journey, and the survivors are sold to the most depraved and cruel men. They are tortured, abused, raped and killed. And one by one, their numbers dwindle. In the end only 13 children are left, and in their desperation, they find a way out of the nightmare. They must sacrifice one of their own and use the blood in a pagan rite in order to open a magical portal to another dimension, to the Free Country, a place in which nothing can harm children, not even time itself.

Tefé, Suzy, Dorothy, Maxine & Tim Hunter (Chris Bachalo)

The British author marvelously weaves an intricate tapestry of myths and legends, much like he did during his run on “The Sandman”, only this time he combines the children’s crusade with fables and fairy tales. Gaiman also provides us with a haunting and fascinating portrait of the real Pied Piper of Hamelin and the final destination of the children he took. Throughout the centuries, several groups of children wind up in the Free Country, but with the arrival of the Flaxdown kids, the resources of this haven become scarce and the entire dimensional plane is on the verge of collapse. In order to preserve their existence, they need to obtain a vast amount of mystical energy. That’s why they decide to kidnap Maxine (Animal Man’s daughter, connected to all the fauna of the planet), Dorothy (a deformed girl with strange abilities, and one of the newest additions to the Doom Patrol), Tefé  (Swamp Thing’s daughter, a half-human, half-plant entity with vast elemental powers), Suzy (Black Orchid’s sister, connected to all plants and flowers) and, of course, Tim Hunter (the mightiest sorcerer of our era, as established in “The Books of Magic”).

The first chapter is magnificently illustrated by Chris Bachalo, his versatile lines and graceful compositions really deserve our admiration; Bachalo’s pencils are skillfully inked by Mike Barreiro. Exclusively for this deluxe hardcover edition, Toby Litt, Rachel Pollack and Peter Gross provide the necessary interludes that were absent in previous editions. Gross continues to amaze me as an artist, due to his creative range and his ability to adapt his style, depending on what best fits the story; his pages here are every bit as great as they were in “The Unwritten”. 

The second chapter is partially written by Gaiman. The other collaborators are writers Jamie Delano and Alisa Kwitney, and artists Peter Snejbjerg, Al Davison and once again Peter Gross. The original covers were beautifully painted by John Bolton, and the striking cover for this new edition was done by the talented Mark Buckingham. “A long time ago, I wrote the first part of a story, and waited to find out how it middled, then worked with Jamie Delano and Alisa Kwitney on the end. For years people have asked how and when they could read all the story of The Children's Crusade. I'm glad to say that it's now been retooled and refinished, and is something both old and new - a forgotten jewel”, explained Neil Gaiman. And reading Free Country: A Tale of the Children’s Crusade has certainly been such a delightful experience, one totally worth waiting for, even if the wait took over two decades.

La línea divisoria entre la infancia y la edad adulta rara vez fue explorada en títulos de superhéroes. Así que no es insólito que la línea Vertigo –la línea para lectores maduros de DC– abordara el tema. Con un gran sentido del humor, Neil Gaiman explica en el prólogo cuál fue el origen de The Children’s Crusade: “todos los escritores y editores de Vertigo estaban allí, en un misterioso refugio rural. Parecía algo poco probable, era como guiar un rebaño de gatos. Naturalmente nosotros no nos acercábamos el uno al otro, pero tal vez esta sería nuestra oportunidad. Neil Gaiman le daría forma a este particular experimento, dividido en dos capítulos notables, conmovedores y estimulantes. La secuencia inicial ocurre en Flaxdown, un bonito y tranquilo pueblito inglés. Un día, de repente, los niños se desvanecen... no uno, ni una docena: todos los niños desaparecen. Nadie entiende lo que está pasando, no hay pistas y, al parecer, no hay ninguna esperanza de poder encontrarlos. En ese momento los Dead Boy Detectives deciden tomar el caso. Charles Rowland y Edwin Paine provienen de las páginas de “The Sandman”; estos niños eran entusiastas de las clásicas novelas de misterio y del cine negro, y al ser fantasmas eran libres de vagar por las calles y visitar lugares inaccesibles incluso para los adultos.

Rápidamente los fantasmagóricos chicos detectives averiguan el paradero de los niños desaparecidos. “Al este del sol y al oeste de la luna, en algún lugar entre las tardes de verano sin fin de la infancia y las nubes movedizas de la magia, se encuentra la tierra llamada País Libre”. The Dead Boy Detectives (Peter Gross)

Free Country (Peter Snejbjerg)

El autor británico teje maravillosamente un intrincado tapiz de mitos y leyendas, al igual que lo hizo durante su etapa en “The Sandman”, sólo que esta vez combina la Cruzada de los niños con fábulas y cuentos de hadas. Gaiman también nos proporciona un retrato inquietante y fascinante del verdadero flautista de Hamelin y el destino final de los niños que secuestró. A lo largo de los siglos, varios grupos de niños han ido a parar al País Libre, pero con la llegada de los niños de Flaxdown, los recursos de este paraíso se vuelven escasos y todo el plano dimensional está al borde del colapso. Con el fin de preservar su existencia, necesitan obtener una gran cantidad de energía mística. April comics / cómics de abril

April sure came with a lot of good surprised. For the first time in my life, I decided to buy a Marvel Omnibus, and I’m glad I did. Marvel Universe by John Byrne is an extraordinary edition that compiles the works of one of my favorite creators; there are over one thousand pages of Byrne art in here and each page is a true delight for me; I’m just thrilled to have this amazing hardcover in my possession. Millar did a satisfactory job with the final issue of Huck and the first issue of Empress. I really enjoyed Silver Surfer and Jupiter’s Circle. Bermejo’s new Suciders series was quite impressive. Providence continues to be one of the best miniseries and this particular issue has some really unforgettable moments. But the best issue of the month was The Fix # 1, I couldn’t stop laughing while reading this transgressive comic… can’t remember the last time I had so much fun with a first issue, which is why I’m giving Nick Spencer due credit for this awesome new series. And now, without further ado, here are April comics as per solicitations:

Hubo muchas buenas sorpresas en abril. Por primera vez en mi vida decidí comprar un Marvel Omnibus y me alegra haberlo hecho. “Marvel Universe by John Byrne” es una extraordinaria edición que recopila la obra de uno de mis creadores favoritos; hay más de mil páginas de arte de Byrne aquí, y cada página es una verdadera delicia; estoy encantado de tener en mis manos este asombroso tomo en tapa dura. Millar hizo un trabajo satisfactorio con el número final de “Huck” y el primer ejemplar de “Empress”. Realmente disfruté con “Silver Surfer” y “Jupiter’s Circle”. La nueva serie de “Suciders” de Bermejo fue bastante impresionante. “Providence” sigue siendo una de las mejores miniseries y en este número en particular hay momentos realmente inolvidables. Pero lo mejor del mes fue “The Fix”, no pude dejar de reír mientras leía este cómic transgresor… no recuerdo la última vez que me divertí tanto con un primer ejemplar, así que le doy a Nick Spencer el crédito que merece por esta estupenda nueva serie. Sandman Overture # 6 - Neil Gaiman & J.H. Williams III

I started reading The Sandman in 2008, many years after the series was originally published. I felt immediately fascinated by Neil Gaiman’s proposal as well as seduced by the oneiric realm of Morpheus, Dream of the Endless. So it was quite a surprise for me to find out, in 2013, that Gaiman would return to his most famous creation, in a 6-issue miniseries titled “Sandman Overture”. 

I know one day I must write about The Sandman, in the same way that I must write about Watchmen and many other hugely relevant comics from that era. The good thing for me is that now that I’m done with the prequel I can jump straight ahead to Vertigo’s most renowned series. According to Gaiman “I decided that it would be really interesting to create a character who was Dream, who was the incarnation of the act of dreaming. He's one of a family of seven siblings, beginning with Destiny and Death and ending with Despair and Delirium. He is incredibly stiff, slightly pompous, rather lonely ... and obsessed by rules, and has very little sense of himself”. All these elements are present in “Sandman Overture”, and perhaps that’s why the magic is still there.

As we saw in previous issues, the entire universe is about to disappear. But Sandman has reunited 1,000 dreamers from every corner of the galaxy, aliens of every conceivable form and shape, creatures of all kinds, are ready to close their eyes and recreate the universe in their dreams. “Because it is the nature of dreams, and only of dreams, to define reality” explains Desire, and indeed, with the help of Delirium and after an incredible sacrifice, the cosmos is restored, the book of Destiny is re-written, Destruction disappears and Death no longer has to attend the infinite demise of entire worlds. The only one of the Endless that is unhappy with this outcome is Despair, as she can’t savor the misery and desolation of others anymore. 

1,000 dreamers / 1,000 soñadores

“If you read the whole of Sandman incredibly carefully, you would have learned, before Sandman #1, he was returning from a distant galaxy in triumph of a sort, tried beyond measure, exhausted beyond everything. But you never knew why”, affirms Gaiman. So it’s no wonder that the last page of Sandman Overture is the opening sequence of The Sandman # 1 (originally published in 1988).

Dream and Delirium / Sueños y Delirio

I’m sure some readers out there are wondering why a 6-issue miniseries took almost 3 years to be completed and the answer is simple. J.H. Williams III’s exquisite art demanded months of preparation, months of thorough work, months of careful execution. All this effort is more than evident in the pages of Sandman Overture, here every panel is a like a piece of fine jewelry, an artistic delight that we should savor slowly. This final issue is as impressive as the others and perhaps even more so. It’s such a pleasure to look at this comic, to admire the absolutely imaginative panel structure, to be amazed at the creativity and talent of an artist that can combine multiple styles and a plethora of illustration techniques to achieve the most impressive results. The end of Sandman Overture is the beginning of The Sandman, and perhaps that means I should start planning on reviewing the entire series… because I am always fascinated by dreams, and like Neil Gaiman said once “A book is a dream that you hold in your hands”, and it’s so rewarding to hold such dreams.

Lo bueno para mí es que ahora que he terminado con la precuela puedo aterrizar directamente en la serie más renombrada de vértigo. De acuerdo con Gaiman “decidí que sería realmente interesante crear un personaje que fuese Sueño, la encarnación del acto de soñar. Él es parte de una familia de siete hermanos, comenzando con Destino y Muerte y terminando con Desesperación y Delirio. Él es increíblemente rígido, ligeramente pomposo, bastante solitario... y obsesionado por las reglas, y con poco conocimiento de sí mismo”. Todos estos elementos están presentes en “Sandman Overture”, y tal vez es por eso que la magia sigue ahí.

La única de los Eternos que no está contenta con este resultado es Desesperación, ya que no podrá disfrutar la miseria y la desolación de los demás.

Todo este esfuerzo es más que evidente en las páginas de “Sandman Overture”, aquí cada viñeta es una como una pieza de joyería fina, un deleite artístico que debemos saborear lentamente. Este último número es tan impresionante como los demás y tal vez aún más. Es un placer mirar este cómic, admirar la estructura absolutamente novedosa de las viñetas; y sorprenderse por la creatividad y el talento de un artista que capaz de combinar varios estilos y una gran cantidad de técnicas de ilustración para lograr los resultados más impresionantes. El fin de “Sandman Overture” es el comienzo de “The Sandman”, y tal vez eso significa que debería empezar a reseñar la serie original... porque siempre me han fascinado los sueños, tal como dijo Neil Gaiman alguna vez: “Un libro es un sueño que puedes sujetar con tus manos”, y es tan gratificante poder sujetar semejantes sueños.

Sandman Overture # 5 - Neil Gaiman & J.H. Williams III

“It begins, as we all begin, in darkness. There is pain. The pain is unimportant, and I ignore it. There is solitude. The solitude may destroy me”, explains the Lord of Dreams. Prophetic words, indeed, especially taking into account that as one of the Endless, Sandman is above the gods, and he holds sway over every planetary system and every galaxy. But despite his limitless power, he is still lonely. That solitude may eventually unravel him, but now he has more pressing matters at hand.

The universe is dying. And if all life forms are to disappear, then the realm of the dreaming will become nonexistent. After an arduous battle, Morpheus is trapped in a black hole. Weakened and in despair, he calls upon his Mother. She offers him the pleasure of an afterlife, free of responsibilities, and without the burden of being an Endless one. In the end, however, it is Destiny who rescues his brother Dream. 

In Sandman Overture, Neil Gaiman combines poetry, pathos and the inner doubts of the Lord of Dreams in one elegant and sophisticated narrative that enthralls the reader. Ally and collaborator, J.H. Williams III is responsible for some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring illustrations one could find in a comic. Just a quick glance to the cover would be enough to understand what is going on, in artistic terms, in a book like Sandman Overture.

There is a plethora of formal experimentation and graphic restructuration in these pages. As I’ve pointed out before, the predominant format here is the double page spread, and each one is significant and powerful on its own. Sandman’s arrival into the dominions of the everlasting night is depicted as a dark and somber scene, in which the protagonist is as easily shrouded in shadows as illuminated by a tenuous lunar reflection.

The war sequence is also extraordinary. J.H. Williams III unleashes all his imagination, showing us the devastation in an alien world. Dave Stewart’s coloring here plays a pivotal role in adding dramatic tension to an already shocking array of images. There are other pages in which the artist completely alters the classic panel arrangement, embracing geometrical forms that would be impossible to find in any other comic.

I particularly enjoyed the pages from the Book of Destiny, it’s a very clever graphic resource, and one that improves the reading experience. The final page is an outstanding example of an inventive composition that defies classic geometrical parameters. There is not a single square-shaped panel here, what we get instead are triangular panels and circular panels that are seamlessly connected with each other. If we add to that the impressive character designs and the striking lines of J.H. Williams III, then the result is a breathtaking page that delights and surprises the reader.

Palabras proféticas, de hecho, teniendo especialmente en cuenta que, al ser uno de los Eternos, Sandman está por encima de los dioses, y ejerce su dominio sobre todos los sistemas planetarios y todas las galaxias. Pero a pesar de su poder ilimitado, él aun así se siente solo. Esa soledad puede llegar a aniquilarlo, pero ahora tiene asuntos más urgentes que atender.

El universo está muriendo. Y si todas las formas de vida llegaran a desaparecer, entonces el reino de los sueños dejaría de existir. Después de una ardua batalla, Morpheus queda atrapado en un agujero negro. Debilitado y desesperado, llama a su madre. Ella le ofrece el placer de una vida en el más allá, libre de responsabilidades, y sin la carga de ser un Eterno. Al final, sin embargo, es Destino que rescata a su hermano Sueño.

En “Sandman Overture”, Neil Gaiman combina poesía, pathos y las dudas internas del Señor de los sueños en una elegante y sofisticada narración que cautiva al lector. Su aliado y colaborador, J.H. Williams III es responsable de algunos de las más bellas y alucinantes ilustraciones que uno podría encontrar en un cómic. Sólo un vistazo rápido a la portada sería suficiente para entender lo que está pasando, en términos artísticos, en un título como “Sandman Overture”.

Hay mucho de experimentación formal y reestructuración gráfica en estas páginas. Como he señalado antes, el formato predominante aquí es la doble página, y cada una es importante y sorprendente en sí misma. La llegada de Sandman a los dominios de la noche eterna es retratada mediante una escena oscura y sombría, en la que el protagonista queda tan fácilmente envuelto por las sombras como iluminado por el tenue reflejo lunar.

La secuencia de guerra también es extraordinaria. J.H. Williams III da rienda suelta a toda su imaginación, mostrándonos la devastación en un mundo alienígena. El coloreado de Dave Stewart juega un papel fundamental aquí al añadir tensión dramática a un conjunto de imágenes ya de por sí impactantes. Hay otras páginas en las que el artista altera por completo la disposición clásica de las viñetas, abarcando formas geométricas que serían imposibles de encontrar en cualquier otro cómic.

Disfruté particularmente de las páginas del Libro de Destino, es un recurso gráfico muy ingenioso, que mejora la experiencia de la lectura. La última página es un ejemplo sobresaliente de una composición innovadora que desafía los parámetros geométricos clásicos. No hay una sola viñeta de forma cuadrada, en su lugar tenemos paneles triangulares y circulares que están perfectamente conectados entre sí. Si a eso le sumamos los impresionantes diseños de personajes y las líneas llamativas de J.H. Williams III, entonces el resultado es una página espectacular que deleita y asombra al lector.
