Conan the Barbarian: Exodus - Esad Ribic

Exactly a year ago, I read the first issue of the new Conan the Barbarian series edited by Marvel. It certainly was a return to greatness, after a not so stellar run in the hands of a different publisher. One of the main reasons I decided to buy all Conan issues was the cover art. Esad Ribić illustrated all 12 Conan covers last year, and each one of them is spectacular.

Ribić is a Croatian artist who started working for Marvel Comics in 2000, exceling as a cover artist in popular titles such as Wolverine, in which he got away with portraying a naked Nightcrawler in the cover of the 6th issue. In any case, “heir to masters like Frank Frazetta and Alex Ross, Ribić combines photorealism with impressionism, and the result is a premium selection of beautiful and unforgettable covers”. And in addition of being one of the best cover artists in the industry, Ribić is also an incredibly talented penciler, inker and colorist. 

Ribić is the reason why I started reading Thor: God of Thunder, and he’s the reason why I picked up the new Conan the Barbarian series, and when I saw he’d be in charge of a very special one-shot, I immediately knew I had to get it. “15 winters in Cimmeria have toughened the young Conan, but his greatest challenge lies ahead. Braving the elements, without food, without shelter, without weapons, Conan must learn to survive even as nature itself conspires to stop him. The snow freezes his bones. The wolves smell his blood. But if he can reach civilization, will his wounds heal…or will his troubles just begin?”. That is the beginning of a story written, penciled, inked and colored by the Croatian artist, and the result is absolutely impressive. 

I had no idea Ribić was such a wonderful writer, and he does what is most difficult for a writer: tell a silent story. Based on my own experience, when it comes to writing comics, there are basically 3 levels of difficulty, in the first level, the easy one, a writer uses everything at his disposal, thought balloons, captions, large exposition dialogues to explain what’s going on, etc. No good writer stays on that first level. In the second level, the intermediate one, a writer focuses on storytelling and replaces captions and thought balloons with panels that will convey that information visually. In the third level, the difficult one, a writer eliminates all text. If one can tell a story without words, then one is truly a master of the comic book medium, and that is precisely what Ribić proves in the pages of Exodus.

In this “man versus nature” setting, I can only think of masters like the Italians Berardi & Milazzo who were able to tell a moving and shocking story in 20 silent pages. Again, it isn’t an easy task to tell an entire story without a single word being pronounced by your protagonist. But Ribić doesn’t need sentences or dialogues, because one of his images is worth at least a thousand words. From the extraordinary cover in which Conan stabs a wolf with an improvised weapon, to the stunning inner art in which Conan must run from the other wolves in the pack, everything that we need to see to understand what’s going on is there, and the silence creates an even greater dramatic tension than anything else. Ribić also makes us realize how desperate Conan is, and how starvation forces him to the most reckless decisions. The absolute beauty of Ribić’s lines, his harmonic designs and his delicate chromatic balance turn each page into a unique work of art.

Hace exactamente un año, leí el primer número de la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian editada por Marvel. Ciertamente fue un regreso a la grandeza, después de una etapa no muy estelar que digamos en manos de una editorial diferente. Una de las principales razones por las que decidí comprar todos los números de Conan fue la portada. Esad Ribić ilustró las 12 portadas de Conan el año pasado, y cada una de ellas es espectacular.

Ribić es un artista croata que comenzó a trabajar para Marvel Comics en el 2000, sobresaliendo como portadista en títulos tan populares como Wolverine, en el que se salió con la suya al retratar a un Nightcrawler desnudo en la portada del sexto número. En cualquier caso, “heredero de maestros como Frank Frazetta y Alex Ross, Ribić combina el fotorrealismo con el impresionismo, y el resultado es una excelente selección de portadas hermosas e inolvidables”. Y además de ser uno de los mejores portadistas de la industria, Ribić también es un dibujante, entintador y colorista increíblemente talentoso.

Ribić es la razón por la que comencé a leer Thor: God of Thunder, y él es la razón por la que compré la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian, y cuando vi que estaría a cargo de un one-shot muy especial, inmediatamente supe que debía conseguirlo. “15 inviernos en Cimmeria han endurecido al joven Conan, pero su mayor desafío está por delante. Desafiando a los elementos, sin comida, sin refugio, sin armas, Conan debe aprender a sobrevivir incluso mientras la naturaleza misma conspira para detenerlo. La nieve congela sus huesos. Los lobos huelen su sangre. Pero si puede alcanzar la civilización, ¿sanarán sus heridas... o comenzarán sus problemas?”. Ese es el comienzo de una historia escrita, dibujada a lápiz, entintada y coloreada por el artista croata, y el resultado es absolutamente impresionante.

No tenía idea de que Ribić era un escritor tan maravilloso, y hace lo más difícil que puede hacer un escritor: contar una historia silenciosa. Según mi propia experiencia, cuando se trata de escribir cómics, existen básicamente 3 niveles de dificultad, en el primer nivel, el fácil, un escritor usa todo lo que tiene a su disposición, globos de pensamiento, cajas de texto, grandes diálogos de exposición para explicar lo que está sucediendo, etc. Ningún buen escritor permanece en ese primer nivel. En el segundo nivel, el intermedio, un escritor se enfoca en la narración de historias y reemplaza las cajas de texto y los globos de pensamiento con viñetas que transmitirán esa información visualmente. En el tercer nivel, el difícil, un escritor elimina todo el texto. Si uno puede contar una historia sin palabras, entonces uno es verdaderamente un maestro del medio del cómic, y eso es precisamente lo que Ribić demuestra en las páginas de Éxodo.

En este entorno de "hombre versus naturaleza", solo puedo pensar en maestros como los italianos Berardi y Milazzo, que podían contar una historia conmovedora e impactante en 20 páginas silenciosas. Nuevamente, no es una tarea fácil contar una historia completa sin que tu protagonista pronuncie una sola palabra. Pero Ribić no necesita oraciones ni diálogos, porque una de sus imágenes vale al menos mil palabras. Desde la extraordinaria portada en la que Conan apuñala a un lobo con un arma improvisada, hasta el impresionante arte interior en el que Conan debe huir de los otros lobos de la manada, todo lo que necesitamos ver para comprender lo que está sucediendo está ahí, y el silencio crea una tensión dramática aún mayor que cualquier otra cosa. Ribić también nos hace darnos cuenta de cuán desesperado está Conan y de cómo el hambre lo obliga a tomar las decisiones más imprudentes. La belleza absoluta de las líneas de Ribić, sus diseños armónicos y su delicado equilibrio cromático convierten cada página en una obra de arte única.

December comics / cómics de diciembre

In December I traveled again to Wisconsin (it’s my fifth trip there since I moved to California), and after spending Christmas and New Year’s in Milwaukee, I came back to Davis and started reading my December comics. The much awaited conclusion of Batman Creature of the Night was great. I really enjoyed Die’s final chapter, as well as the second issue of Dollhouse, Punisher and Legion of Super-Heroes. American Gods continues to be one of the best ongoing titles, and the end of Invaders was quite fitting. However, if I had to choose the best issue of the month then that would be King Thor #4, after 8 years, Jason Aaron has put an end to his awarded run on Thor, with one final issue that is a heartfelt homage to the God of Thunder. And now, without further ado, here are December comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS #8

En diciembre viajé de nuevo a Wisconsin (es mi quinto viaje desde que me mudé a California), y después de pasar navidad y año nuevo en Milwaukee, regresé a Davis y empecé a leer mis cómics de diciembre. La tan esperada conclusión de Batman Creature of the Night estuvo estupenda. Realmente disfruté con el capítulo final de Die, así como el segundo ejemplar de Dollhouse, Punisher y Legion of Super-Heroes. American Gods continúa siendo una de las mejores colecciones mensuales, y el final de Invaders fue bastante apropiado. Sin embargo, si tuviera que elegir el mejor cómic del mes entonces sería King Thor #4, luego de 8 años, Jason Aaron pone fin a su laureada etapa en Thor, con un número final que es un sentido homenaje al Dios del Trueno. December films

It is now a tradition to come up with a list of the best films of the year. But before we get there, I would like to talk a few movies and short films I saw in 2019. Next post will be all about 2020! 3 years ago I was really looking forward to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), based on the French comic book series by Pierre Christin & Jean-Claude Mézières. I think it was important to have as inspiration a comic book that didn’t come from Marvel or DC, and that wasn’t American. Having Luc Besson directing it, made me even more excited about this project, but despite the amazing potential, the filmic adaptation doesn’t live up to my expectations. Besson still creates impressive scenarios, and the movie is very rich visually, but the plot needed to be more engaging. I have read some Valerian comics and the characters and their motivations seemed to be more complex. It’s unlikely that we’ll ever get to see a sequel. The cast includes talented actors such as Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings), Cara Delevingne and Clive Owen.

Rian Johnson has always been one of my favorite directors, however I’d say he’s bitten off more than what he could chew with Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). As the second movie in the new trilogy, The Last Jedi had all the elements to become an instant Star Wars classic, and yet the movie as a whole feels somewhat lacking.  Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver reprise their roles from The Force Awakens. The only thing I can rescue from this is getting the chance to see Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher back in their iconic roles as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia respectively. So far, the new trilogy has been quite a let down. 

Written and directed by Anthony Doncque, 1992 (2016) is a fascinating, deeply introspective and down-to-earth coming of age tale that revolves around Louis Duneton, a 17-year-old high school student that films attractive guys and masturbates while watching his video recordings… until he meets Matthieu Dessertine, a man that works at the school. The teenager will have his first gay sexual experience with this man. In only a few minutes, Doncque creates an atmosphere rich in sexual tension and also introduces incredibly touching moments, like the boy’s confrontation with his father and their reconciliation at the end.  

Chucho E. Quintero directs Panquecito (2019), a Mexican short film about a chubby gay young man who spends all his time trying to hook up with guys on dating apps, and when he finally finds someone interested in him, his roommate takes the guy to his bedroom. The protagonist, then, must decide if he’s willing to participate in a threesome. Quintero magnificently represents the sexual frustration and insecurities of a young man worried about not having a perfect body. I absolutely loved the reference to Velociraptor, Quintero’s fascinating film from 2014.


Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2019, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

Ya es una tradición elaborar una lista de las mejores películas del año. Pero antes de empezar, me gustaría hablar sobre algunas películas y cortometrajes que vi en 2019. ¡El próximo post será sobre el 2020! Hace 3 años tenía muchas ganas de ver Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), basada en la serie de cómics francesa de Pierre Christin y Jean-Claude Mézières. Creo que era importante tener como inspiración un cómic que no fuera de Marvel o DC, y que no fuera estadounidense. Tener a Luc Besson dirigiéndolo me entusiasmó aún más con este proyecto, pero a pesar del increíble potencial, la adaptación cinematográfica no cumple del todo con mis expectativas. Besson crea escenarios impresionantes, y la película es muy rica visualmente, pero la trama tendría que haber sido más atrayente. He leído algunos cómics de Valerian y los personajes y sus motivaciones parecían ser más complejos. Es poco probable que odamos ver una secuela. El elenco incluye actores talentosos como Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings), Cara Delevingne y Clive Owen.

  

Rian Johnson siempre ha sido uno de mis directores favoritos, sin embargo, diría que ha mordido más de lo que podía masticar con Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). Esta segunda película de la nueva trilogía tenía todos los elementos para convertirse en un clásico instantáneo de Star Wars, y, sin embargo, la película en su conjunto se siente insípida. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega y Adam Driver repiten sus papeles de The Force Awakens. Lo único que puedo rescatar de esto es tener la oportunidad de ver a Mark Hamill y Carrie Fisher de vuelta en sus icónicos roles como Luke Skywalker y la princesa Leia, respectivamente. Hasta ahora, la nueva trilogía ha sido bastante decepcionante.

Escrito y dirigido por Anthony Doncque, 1992 (2016) es una historia fascinante, profundamente introspectiva y realista que gira en torno a Louis Duneton, un estudiante de secundaria de 17 años que filma a chicos atractivos y se masturba mientras mira sus grabaciones de video... hasta que conoce a Matthieu Dessertine, un hombre que trabaja en la escuela. El adolescente tendrá su primera experiencia sexual gay con este hombre. En sólo unos minutos, Doncque crea una atmósfera rica en tensión sexual y también presenta momentos increíblemente conmovedores, como la confrontación del chico con su padre y su reconciliación al final.

Chucho E. Quintero dirige Panquecito (2019), un cortometraje mexicano sobre un joven gay gordito que pasa todo el tiempo tratando de ligar con chicos en apps, y cuando finalmente encuentra a alguien interesado en él, su compañero de cuarto se lleva al joven a su habitación. El protagonista, entonces, debe decidir si está dispuesto a participar en un trío. Quintero representa magníficamente la frustración sexual y las inseguridades de un joven preocupado por no tener un cuerpo perfecto. Me encantó la referencia a Velociraptor, la fascinante película de Quintero de 2014.

El tiempo no es sino un delgado velo, sobre él nuestras siluetas se abultan o aligeran. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2019, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.
