November Comics / Cómics de noviembre

In November, I finally got to read the conclusion of Strange Fruit, a wonderful miniseries with beautiful art. There were quite a few interesting comics this month, but my favorites are Vision # 3 (although technically is not a November comic even though I read it just now) and Unworthy Thor # 1. And now without further ado here are November comics as per solicitations:

CHAMPIONS #2
(W) Mark Waid (A/CA) Humberto Ramos. Welcome to the CHAMPIONS, Cyclops! Unfortunately, not all of your new would-be teammates feel the same way! Rated T

CINEMA PURGATORIO #7 
(W) Alan Moore & Various (A) Kevin O'Neil & Various (CA) Ignacio Calero. The screen goes dark and you hear the 'tick-tick-tick' of the reel flapping as it whips unchecked around the spool. There's something horrible in that sound. You still can't believe what you just watched… but at least it's over. Who made these movies? There's something very wrong about them and you should go, just get up and leave. Maybe after this next feature… Now showing: Cinema Purgatorio by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, A More Perfect Union by Max Brooks and Michael DiPascale, Code Pru by Garth Ennis and Raulo Caceres, Modded by Kieron Gillen and Ignacio Calero, and The Vast by Christos Gage and Gabriel Andrade. Each story has its own cover by the series artist and there is also an Ancient Tome Premium edition limited to 1000 copies.

CREATURES OF THE NIGHT HC 
(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) Michael Zulli. Two magical stories featuring strange creatures that are not quite what they seem! In 'The Price,' a mysterious feline engages in a nightly conflict with an unseen, vicious foe. 'The Daughter of Owls' recounts a tale of an orphan girl-and how those who wronged her faced bizarre consequences!

DOCTOR STRANGE #14 
(W) Jason Aaron (A/CA) Chris Bachalo. 'BLOOD IN THE AETHER' continues! • Doctor Strange's Rogues Gallery continues take advantage of his weakness. • THIS ISSUE- Satanna and Master Pandemonium put Strange through his own personal hell. Rated T+

INFAMOUS IRON MAN #2 
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) Alex Maleev. The secrets that propel Victor Von Doom's new quest as a hero start to reveal themselves, but that is nothing compared to the who's who of heroes AND villains looking for a piece of revenge for his past sins - beginning with Ben Grimm! Rated T+

JESSICA JONES #2 
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A) Michael Gaydos (CA) David Mack. • There are so many mysteries to discover in the Marvel Universe and Jessica's new case may be the most dangerous one. • No spoilers, but some of the biggest questions about the new Marvel NOW! are about to be revealed in this very comic. En noviembre por fin pude leer la conclusión de Strange Fruit, una maravillosa miniserie con un arte precioso. Hubo varios cómics interesantes este mes, pero mis favoritos son Vision # 3 (aunque técnicamente no corresponda a este mes) y Unworthy Thor # 1. CINEMA PURGATORIO # 7
La pantalla se oscurece y se escuche el ruido del carrete aleteando mientras se desbobina sin control. Hay algo horrible en ese sonido. Aún no puedes creer lo que acabas de ver... pero al menos se acabó. ¿Quién hizo estas películas? Hay algo muy siniestro en ellas y debes irte, levántate y vete. Tal vez después de esta próxima función... 

CREATURES OF THE NIGHT HC 
Dos historias mágicas con extrañas criaturas que no son exactamente lo que parecen. En “El precio”, un felino misterioso se involucra en un conflicto nocturno con un oponente invisible y vicioso. “La hija de los búhos” relata la historia de una niña huérfana - y cómo aquellos que la maltrataron finalmente enfrentaron consecuencias extrañas.

DOCTOR STRANGE # 14
La galería de villanos de Doctor Strange continúa aprovechando su debilidad. Satanna y Master Pandemonium torturan a Strange en su propio infierno personal. 

INFAMOUS IRON MAN # 2
Los secretos que impulsan la nueva misión de Victor Von Doom como héroe empiezan a revelarse, pero eso no es nada comparado con la cantidad de héroes y villanos que buscan vengarse por sus pecados pasados, ¡comenzando con Ben Grimm!

JESSICA JONES # 2
Hay tantos misterios por descubrir en el Universo Marvel y el nuevo caso de Jessica puede ser el más peligroso. Algunas de las preguntas más importantes están a punto de ser reveladas.

Lo mejor del arte en Lima - 2016

2016 has been a fantastic. I knew that moving from Peru to the US would be a big change, and before coming here I wasn’t sure if I would be able to adapt easily. Fortunately, in only 4 months, I’ve already fell in love with the city of Milwaukee and I’ve made good friends. 

At the beginning of the year I decided to translate Un-American Chronicles into Spanish. I thought it would be easy for me to do it, but for some reason I kept change entire dialogues and I realized I wasn’t impartial enough to translate my own word. Luckily, my friend Paco García Sánchez took charge of the translation and I must say I’m very satisfied with the result.

My first semester in UWM concluded last week, and although I’ve been extremely busy now I’m finally getting ready to do new projects with my usual collaborators (Juan Alarcón, Christian Castellanos, Alberto Aguado) but also with new ones (Kaskajo and Lucas Gattoni).

Since I started this blog I have always showcased my own artwork but I have also analyzed the artistic proposals of Peruvian artists. Despite the fact that I’ve completely missed the last 4 months of art exhibits (since in I’m no longer in Lima) I’ve decided to make a selection of the best of 2016 (or at least the best from January to August, 2016).

El 2016 ha sido un año fantástico. Sabía que trasladarme de Perú a Estados Unidos sería un gran cambio, y antes de venir aquí no estaba seguro si sería capaz de adaptarme fácilmente. Afortunadamente, en sólo 4 meses, la ciudad de Milwaukee me ha cautivado por completo y he hecho buenos amigos.

Tomás Prochazka

Al principio del año decidí traducir Un-American Chronicles al español. Pensé que sería fácil hacerlo yo mismo, pero por alguna razón estuve cambiando diálogos enteros y me di cuenta de que no era lo suficientemente imparcial para traducir mi propia obra. Afortunadamente, mi amigo Paco García Sánchez se hizo cargo de la traducción y debo decir que estoy muy satisfecho con el resultado.

Mi primer semestre en UWM terminó la semana pasada y aunque he estado muy ocupado ahora por fin estoy preparando nuevos proyectos con mis colaboradores habituales (Juan Alarcón, Christian Castellanos, Alberto Aguado), pero también con los nuevos (Kaskajo y Lucas Gattoni).

Desde que empecé este blog siempre he mostrado mis propias ilustraciones, pero también he analizado las propuestas artísticas de artistas peruanos. A pesar de que me he perdido los últimos 4 meses de exhibiciones de arte (ya que ya no estoy en Lima) he decidido hacer una selección de lo mejor del 2016 (o al menos lo mejor de enero a agosto del 2016). Para el 2017 quizá modifica esta sección del blog y la retitule como Lo mejor del arte en Milwaukee o algo así. Habrá que ver qué se me ocurre.

Como siempre, este año mi interés por el arte me llevó a innumerables muestras y creo que es justo, y hasta necesario, establecer en líneas generales un balance de lo mejor del arte en Lima.

Tomás Prochazka Núñez es un personaje habitual en las páginas virtuales de este blog. Aunque no es un amigo cercano es, definitivamente, uno de los artistas a quien más respeto. No ha dejado de sorprenderme gratamente desde sus primeros trabajos como estudiante en Corriente Alterna y luego en muestras individuales y colectivas. Aplaudo al Centro Colich por presentar “La máquina” y por confirmar que Tomás Prochazka es un artista de enorme talento. 

La Galería Enlace tuvo el acierto de cederle un espacio al gran maestro escultor Antonio Pareja. “El toro que soñé” es una selección de esculturas en la que no hay una sola pieza débil. El veterano artista logra conmover al espectador con sus animales tallados en madera, piedra y metal. 

La Galería Forum, uno de los espacios limeños de más larga trayectoria en el mundo del arte limeño, celebró su 40 aniversario con la muestra “Celebración”. Decenas de los mejores artistas peruanos colaboraron en esta colectiva: Valeria Ghezzi, Roy Keitel, Maroé Susti, Luz Negib, Luis Lama, Nanny Cárdenas, Ivana Ferrer, Fernando Otero, Inés Grau, Alicia Cabieses, Yulia Katkova, Denise Mulanovich, Rosi Schwartzman, Gonzalo García Callegari, Maricruz Arribas, Moico Yaker, Gabriel Alayza, Mateo Alayza, Alejo Alayza, Ramiro Llona, Eduardo Tokeshi, Martín López de Romaña, Elías Alayza, Gam Klutier, Jaime Romero, Mónica Cuba, Marco Testino, Joseph Firbas, Pablo Patrucco, Fito Espinosa, Silvia Westphalen, Martha Cisneros, Toto Fernández Ampuero, Luz Letts, Ricardo Wiesse, Mariella Agois, Rhony Alalhel, Gianna Pollarollo, Maya García Miró, Nana de la Fuente, Sergio Fernández, Sonia Prager, Alberto Grieve, Marcos Palacios, Fernando Taboada, Augusta Barreda, Eduardo Moll, Miguel Angel Velit, etc.

Cuando conocí a Aissa Chrem en la redacción de la revista COSAS, era evidente que lo suyo era la fotografía. Y si bien es una fotógrafa profesional que se ha abierto camino en el competitivo mundo limeño, también es una artista con mucho que decir y, sobre todo, muchísimo que mostrar. Treguas de vidrio es para mí la mejor propuesta artística del 2016.

Paola Franco siente devoción por el dibujo y no tiene miedo a mancharse los dedos con carboncillo o a dibujar sin parar. Espero que siga consolidando sus talentos y que prepare en el futuro cercano alguna muestra individual.

Ver la obra de Liniers en el MAC fue una experiencia increíble. “Pensemos bien con Liniers” es un magnífico ejemplo de buen arte y, sobre todo, una propuesta coherente que nos permite apreciar del todo la gracia y la estética de este estupendo creador argentino.

Baldomero Pestana, español de nacimiento pero argentino de corazón, tuvo la suerte de conocer a los mejores novelistas, poetas y artistas del Perú hace medio siglo. Bajo su cámara y su mirada atenta han desfilado Mario Vargas Llosa, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Julio Ramón Ribeyro, Martín Adán, Fernando de Szyzslo, Sabino Springett, Juan Manuel Ugarte Eléspuru, etc. Esta fue una muestra internacional firmemente anclada en los mejores exponentes culturales de nuestro país.

The Champions: Black Goliath - Bill Mantlo & John Byrne

Lately, I’ve been nurturing a somewhat incendiary theory: if the most popular writers of the 60s, 70s and 80s were still actively working in the American industry, then they would probably be forced by their editors to turn a single one of their comics into a 6-issue arc. Decompression seems to be almost mandatory now. Although, to be honest, I can’t be sure if the editors are the only ones to blame; surely, as readers, we also play the role of the accomplice.

But I don’t want to sound like an excessively nostalgic reader, because it wasn’t all that peachy in the 70s. Back then delays were never accepted; comics had to be released month after month, no matter what. This means that creators had to constantly produce material without much time to take a pause and catch their breath, let alone give a second thought to what they were doing. Obviously, a lot of these comics have lost of some of their original appeal, and a sophisticated reader might find them a little too overstated, slightly clumsy and, quite often, downright politically incorrect.

I would say such is the case of Black Goliath’s first official appearance in “The Shadow From the Stars” (originally published in The Champions # 11, February 1977). When Bill Foster finally reveals his amazing powers he’s instantly nicknamed Black Goliath. Not Goliath, Black Goliath. That emphasis in color is quite typical in this era, in which African-American heroes would often have a ‘Black’ prefix connected to their name (Black Lightning in DC, Black Goliath and Black Panther, in Marvel, etc.). As if trying to overstate the obvious, these heroes constantly reminded us of their race with their peculiar monikers. 

Obviously, white heroes were the norm, so none of the original Marvel characters had names such as White Spider-Man, White Human Torch or White Iron Man, but if at some point they would have encountered their African-American counterparts, then we wouldn’t need to be clairvoyants to guess how those names would have sounded like.

A couple of interesting things happen in this issue. Black Goliath shows up and proves to be a powerful and noble superhero, and yet he isn’t invited to join the Champions. Furthermore, during the rest of the issue, the protagonists battle against an extraterrestrial shadow-like creature. In other words, they fight against a dark enemy, a black menace. I’m absolutely convinced that Bill Mantlo wasn’t trying to be racist, but I wonder how today’s readers would react to this story.

“Did Someone Say...the Stranger?” (The Champions # 12, March 1977) and “The Doom That Went On Forever!” (The Champions # 13, May 1977) is an action-packed adventure divided in two episodes. Black Widow, Hercules, Angel, Iceman, Ghost Rider and Darkstar join forces with the Stranger (a classic X-Men adversary) to save the world. In the process, the Champions battle against the villainous Kamo Tharnn.

Black Goliath

“The Creature Called...Swarm!” (The Champions # 14, July 1977) and “Death Drone!” (The Champions # 15, September 1977) have many of the elements that I always enjoy in superhero comics: a sinister villain (Swarm), a compelling secret origin (Swarm is Fritz Von Meyer, a former Nazi officer who fled to South America and came in contact with an alien radiation that turned him into a swarm of super-intelligent bees), and parallel storylines that complement each other rather nicely. While part of the Champions try to defeat Swarm, Iceman and Hercules are attacked by the defensive mechanisms of their own headquarters.

The Stranger

Iceman (Bobby Drake) had been presented as a sexually ambiguous character in the pages of X-Men. 40 years later, Bobby would come out of the closet, but here we can also find a few clues in regards to his true sexual orientation. First of all, Bobby is obsessed with his wardrobe (in a similar way, many stereotypical gay men were usually portrayed in movies or TV series as fashion-lovers), so the first thing he does to be considered a ‘man’ (instead of a boy) is to get a new costume, which he probably designed himself… Now if that isn’t manly enough, when the lights mysteriously go out he also gets to spend some quality time with Hercules (the same character who, decades later, was revealed to be bisexual, like most Greek heroes from the classic period). My favorite line here comes from Ghost Rider, who runs into them and says “What happened to the lights, Drake? You and the Man-God playing hide-n’ seek?”. Evidently, we don’t know for sure what happened between the youngster and the Greek demigod, but we could still come up with a hypothesis or two…

These 5 issues were penciled by John Byrne. At the time, he wasn’t the superstar responsible for the success of X-Men or Fantastic Four. The artwork is clean, effective and full of grace, despite the fact that Byrne was clearly still learning how to do his job. Bob Layton and Mike Esposito weren’t the ideal inkers for the refined pencils of Mr. Byrne, but they still made it work. Since Byrne was a relatively unknown penciler, the covers were illustrated by a fine selection of veteran artists such as Gil Kane, Dave Cockrum and Al Milgrom.

Últimamente, he pensado en una teoría algo incendiaria: si los escritores más populares de los 60s, 70s y 80s aún trabajasen activamente en la industria estadounidense, entonces probablemente serían obligados por sus editores a convertir un solo cómic en un arco argumental de 6 capítulos. Alargar las historias parece ser casi obligatoria hoy en día. Aunque, para ser honesto, no puedo asegurar que los editores son los únicos culpables; seguramente, como lectores, también somos cómplices de esta situación.

The Stranger, Angel, Iceman & Darkstar

Pero no quiero sonar como un lector excesivamente nostálgico, porque no todo era tan maravilloso en los 70s. En ese entonces los retrasos nunca eran aceptados; los cómics tenían que salir mes tras mes, sea como fuere. Esto significa que los creadores tenían que producir constantemente material sin mucho tiempo para tomar una pausa y recuperar el aliento, y mucho menos poder revisar lo que estaban haciendo. Obviamente, muchos de estos cómics han perdido algo de su atractivo original, y un lector sofisticado podría encontrarlos un poco exagerados, un poco torpes y, muy a menudo, políticamente incorrectos.

Iceman's new look / un nuevo traje para Iceman

Diría que tal es el caso de la primera aparición oficial de Black Goliath en “La sombra de las estrellas” (publicado originalmente en The Champions # 11, febrero de 1977). Cuando Bill Foster finalmente revela sus increíbles poderes, es instantáneamente apodado Black Goliath. No Goliat, sino Goliat Negro. Ese énfasis en el color es bastante típico en esta era, en la que los héroes afroamericanos tenían a menudo el prefijo “Negro” conectado a su nombre (Black Lightning en DC, Black Goliath y Black Panther, en Marvel, etc.). Tratando de exagerar lo obvio, estos héroes constantemente nos recordaban su raza a través de sus peculiares nombres.

Obviamente, los héroes blancos eran la norma, así que ninguno de los personajes originales de Marvel tenía nombres como White Spider-Man, White Human Torch o White Iron Man, pero si en algún momento hubieran encontrado a sus contrapartes afroamericanas, entonces no hace falta ser clarividentes para adivinar cómo serían esos nombres.

Un par de cosas interesantes ocurren en este ejemplar. Black Goliath se presenta y demuestra ser un superhéroe poderoso y noble, y sin embargo, no lo invitan a unirse a los Champions. Además, durante el resto del cómic, los protagonistas luchan contra una criatura extraterrestre parecida a una sombra. En otras palabras, luchan contra un enemigo oscuro, una amenaza negra. Estoy absolutamente convencido de que Bill Mantlo no estaba tratando de ser racista, pero me pregunto cómo reaccionarían los lectores de hoy frente a esta historia.

Icenam and Hercules... playing hide and seek? / Iceman y Hercules... jugando a los escondidas?

“Alguien dijo... el Extraño” y “La maldición que continuó por siempre” (The Champions # 13, mayo de 1977) es una aventura llena de acción dividida en dos episodios. Black Widow, Hercules, Angel, Iceman, Ghost Rider y Darkstar unen sus fuerzas con el Stranger (un clásico adversario de los X-Men) para salvar al mundo. En el proceso, los Champions combaten contra el villano Kamo Tharnn.

Swarm

“La criatura llamada... Enjambre” (The Champions # 14, julio de 1977) y “El zumbido de la muerte” (The Champions # 15, septiembre de 1977) tienen muchos de los elementos que siempre disfruto en los cómics de superhéroes: un villano siniestro (Enjambre), un extraño origen secreto (Enjambre es Fritz Von Meyer, ex oficial nazi que huyó a Sudamérica y entró en contacto con una radiación alienígena que lo convirtió en un enjambre de abejas súper inteligentes), y argumentos paralelos que se complementan entre sí bastante bien. Mientras algunos de los Champions tratan de derrotar a Enjambre, Iceman y Hércules son atacados por los mecanismos defensivos de su propio cuartel general.

Black Widow

En primer lugar, Bobby está obsesionado con su guardarropa (de la misma manera, muchos hombres homosexuales estereotípicos suelen ser retratados en películas o series de televisión como amantes de la moda), así que lo primero que hace para ser considerado un “hombre” (en vez de un chiquillo) es conseguir un nuevo traje, que probablemente él mismo diseña... Y por si eso no fuese lo suficientemente viril, cuando las luces misteriosamente se apagan también pasa un buen rato con Hércules (el mismo personaje que, décadas más tarde, reveló ser bisexual, como la mayoría de los héroes griegos del período clásico). Mi línea favorita aquí viene de Ghost Rider, que se encuentra con ellos y dice: "¿Qué pasó con las luces, Drake? ¿Tú y el hombre-Dios están jugando a las escondidillas?". Evidentemente, no sabemos con certeza lo que sucedió entre el joven y el semidiós griego, pero podríamos aventurar alguna hipótesis...

Estos 5 números fueron dibujados a lápiz por John Byrne. En ese momento, él no era la superestrella responsable del éxito de X-Men o los Cuatro Fantásticos. Su arte es limpio, eficaz y lleno de gracia, a pesar del hecho de que Byrne claramente todavía está aprendiendo a hacer su trabajo. Bob Layton y Mike Esposito no eran los entintadores ideales para los lápices refinados de Byrne, pero aun así cumplieron con su trabajo. Ya que Byrne era un dibujante relativamente desconocido, las portadas fueron ilustradas por una fina selección de artistas veteranos como Gil Kane, Dave Cockrum y Al Milgrom.

November Films / películas de noviembre

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a decade since the first Marvel Studios production was released. And ever since then I’ve been a faithful moviegoer and, of course, that hasn’t changed now that I’m in Milwaukee. I went with a couple of friends to Marcus Theater in Menomonee Falls and we saw Doctor Strange (2016). I had high expectations, because Doctor Strange is one of my favorite Marvel superheroes and also because director Scott Derrickson had already impressed me with Sinister (one of the best horror movies from the past 5 years). Derrickson manages to balance the science aspect (Dr. Stephen Strange, after all, is a renowned surgeon) and the fantastic elements that define the world of the Sorcerer Supreme. Perhaps, this is one of the things that I enjoy the most about this character: he’s a combination of science and magic, and therefore he lies between the more sci-fi oriented Marvel Universe and the possibilities of fantasy. Benedict Cumberbatch does a great job as Stephen Strange, and the rest of the cast is very solid (Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, etc.). I do have, however, a few complaints about the script, some details that didn’t quite click for me, but overall this was a very entertaining blockbuster. Can’t wait for the sequel!

Es difícil creer que ha pasado casi una década desde que se estrenó la primera producción de Marvel Studios. Y desde entonces he sido un fiel espectador y, por supuesto, eso no ha cambiado ahora que estoy en Milwaukee. Fui con un par de amigos a Marcus Theatre en Menomonee Falls y vimos Doctor Strange (2016). Tenía grandes expectativas porque Doctor Strange es uno de mis superhéroes favoritos de Marvel y también porque el director, Scott Derrickson, ya me había impresionado con Sinister (una de las mejores películas de terror de los últimos 5 años). Derrickson consigue equilibrar el aspecto de la ciencia (el Dr. Stephen Strange, después de todo, es un cirujano de renombre) y los elementos fantásticos que definen el mundo del Hechicero Supremo. Tal vez, esa sea una de las cosas que más disfruto de este personaje: él es una combinación de ciencia y magia, y por lo tanto se ubica entre el Universo Marvel más orientado a la ciencia ficción y las posibilidades de la fantasía. Benedict Cumberbatch hace un gran trabajo como Stephen Strange, y el resto del elenco es muy sólido (Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, etc.). October comics / cómics de octubre

Marvel sure had a lot of good first issues in October, such as Jessica Jones, Champions, Infamous Iron Man; and there were also at least a couple of interesting new series coming from Image: Reborn and Moonshine. However, the best comic of the month was Descender # 15, great story plus amazing art. And now, without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

CINEMA PURGATORIO #6

The lights are low and that surreal ticking noise from behind you could be the film reel or something else… As the first images begin to flicker across the screen, you feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand and a chill run down your spine.
