May Comics / cómics de mayo

In May I celebrated Free Comic Book Day in the Turning Page, the comic book shop I used to go to when I was living in Milwaukee. Out of the 5 FCBD titles I got, my favorite was Deadly Class, in fact, I think it was even better than the first issue of the regular series. My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris was also extraordinary. Cinema Purgatorio’s final issue was amazing, it’s a shame this anthology has been canceled. I really enjoyed 2000AD Villains Takeover Special, and even more so because of the homage to legendary artist Carlos Ezquerra, who passed away last year. My favorite comic of the month is Spider-Man: Life Story. And now without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations. 

2000 AD VILLAINS

24 PANELS

In June 2017, the Grenfell fire killed 72 people in a 24-story tower block in West London. 24 PANELS is an anthology comic to support the PTSD needs of the survivors. Curated by KIERON GILLEN (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE), it features 24 stories, each no longer than 24 panels. Half drawn from professional creators who volunteered their time and half drawn from open submissions, 24 PANELS is about community, hope, and (most of all) raising as much money as possible.

AMERICAN GODS #2 
(W) Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell (A) P. Craig Russell & Various (CA) Glenn Fabry. The battling gods have a momentary ceasefire as they mourn a death in their ranks. However, the 'vigil' that Shadow wants to be a part of may end up being more than he can handle.

ASCENDER #1

En mayo celebré el Free Comic Book Day en Turning Page, la tienda de cómics a la que iba cuando vivía en Milwaukee. De los 5 ejemplares del FCBD que obtuve, mi favorito fue Deadly Class, de hecho, creo que fue incluso mejor que el primer número de la colección mensual. My Favorite Thing is Monsters de Emil Ferris también estuvo extraordinario. El final de Cinema Purgatorio fue asombroso, es una lástima que esta antología haya sido cancelada. Realmente disfruté el 2000AD Villains Takeover Special sobre todo por el homenaje al legendario artista Carlos Ezquerra, que falleció el año pasado. Mi cómic favorito del mes es Spider-Man: Life Story. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos, aquí van los cómics de mayo.

Prez - Ed Brubaker & Eric Shanower

In 1973, DC Comics published Prez, a short-lived title described as the adventures of the “first teen president of the U.S.A.”. The writer was Joe Simon, the creator of Captain America. And just in the same way that Captain America became the Sentinel of Liberty, an undefeatable warrior against the forces of evil, Prez Rickard aspired to become a force for freedom, a liberating voice that would empower an entire generation.

Prez’s archnemesis was Boss Smiley “a corrupt, all-powerful” politician. It made sense. Prez was an idealist, a dreamer, an optimistic teenager who wanted to improve everyone’s lives. But of course, such noble goal was doomed to meet failure. And that is precisely what captured Neil Gaiman’s attention and that is why Sandman # 54 (1993) is devoted to Prez. Gaiman’s story, “The Golden Boy” is pure genius (definitely one of the best standalone stories I’ve read in my life). The British author perfectly captures the innocence and idealism of youth pitted against the compromises of adulthood. 

In September 1995, Ed Brubaker wrote an extraordinary story about Prez, titled “Smells Like Teen President” (the title, obviously, is a reference to Nirvana’s famous song). Brubaker pays homage to both, the classic Joe Simon stories and especially Neil Gaiman’s reinterpretation of the character. “It begins in election year '96 with the country coming apart at the seams. Prez Rickard, long missing and presumed dead, has been sighted at a roadside diner in the American heartland. A trio of restless young misfits, one of whom believes he is Prez's son, sets out across America in search of answers to their country's woes”.

Childhood friends / amigos de la infancia

The first chapter is narrated by P.J.’s childhood friend, and he talks about what he knows or what he thinks he knows. Brubaker cleverly uses an unreliable narrator to talk about that which cannot be verified. If P.J.’s mom had sex with Prez in a celebratory event of free love organized by the hippy community, then why nobody was ever able to prove that Prez was indeed P.J.’s father? P.J. is about to turn 18 and his life is a disaster. He has broken up with his girlfriend, he doesn’t have a job and he gets drunk all the time, he’s an orphan, he doesn’t have a house anymore, and he sleeps on his best friend’s couch, drinking more and more alcohol each night. P.J. has an intuition, the intuition talks of a promise, of a potential that has not yet been reached. And nothings seems to matter to P.J. anymore until he realizes that he must find out what happened to his father in order to make sense of his existence.

That is the beginning of a life changing road trip in which P.J. and his 2 friends drive from California to Kansas, and finally Wisconsin, in search for answers. The next chapter is narrated by the other friend, and this time the approach is more about the actions in the present and not so much about the past. And the present is full of intense emotions as well as sexual experiences. The talented artist Eric Shanower graces the pages of Prez with his elegant, clean and precise lines, creating bodies and movements that dance in harmony. Rob Cain said that “the drawings are magnificent. There are beautiful renderings of the human form”, but there is also an attention to detail and an expressive quality that explain why Shanower won the Eisner award twice. 

Coitus interruptus

Like Kelly Harrass points out, this a teen self-discovery story, but it also addresses important concerns “Most of the concerns about America that are brought up in this story still exist and have actually gotten worse in the almost twenty years since this comic was released”. Brubaker was able to anticipate what might happen years later, his sensibility and capacity for observation are undoubtedly the mark of a brilliant writer. 

In the final chapter, narrated by P.J., the 3 boys arrive to Wisconsin; they will finally find out what happened to Prez. For me, this chapter was especially moving, since I have also traveled from California to Wisconsin, often with questions that needed to be answered. In Wisconsin, P.J. talks to an old friend of Prez: “Prez was a dreamer --but unlike most dreamers, his came true. He really felt he was born to lead this country, but he didn’t anticipate the level of corruption in the world. People care more about money than they do about other people, and he thought he could change that”. In Neil Gaiman’s story Prez Rickard dies, but instead of entering into the realm of the dead, he is welcomed into the land of dreams ruled by Sandman. After all, isn’t that the best end an idealistic teenager could hope for? To live on as a dream and to be an inspiration for young people? In Brubaker’s story we see exactly how Prez died. Prez was physically connected to the US. And “the next president was just a puppet for big business, and any dissenting voices were labeled 'liberal', as if that was something bad”, and when the American government starts sending troops to “small, helpless” countries, Prez becomes ill. Prez finds the actions of the American government revolting and, at the same time, his health deteriorates, until one day his body can’t keep going on. 

P.J.'s alcoholism gets out of control / el alcoholismo de P.J. se sale de control

In the final pages, P.J. takes peyote and has a hallucinatory dream in which he’s visited by Prez. Eric Shanower’s beautiful art depicts America’s obsession with guns, as well as the basic structure of “buy, spend, consume and pay later”. Prez affirms that “the world changes any time one person changes”. And after waking up from the dream, P.J. has changed. Prez is dead, but the dream lives on. And P.J. finally realizes that his life has meaning. This is an unforgettable, deeply emotional and unique journey of self discovery. I only wish I would’ve been able to read “Smells Like Teen President” when I was 18.

One night stand / sexo casual

El archienemigo de Prez era Boss Smiley, “un político corrupto y todopoderoso”. Tiene sentido. Prez era un idealista, un soñador, un adolescente optimista que quería mejorar las vidas de todos. Pero, por supuesto, un objetivo tan noble estaba condenado al fracaso. Y eso es precisamente lo que le llamó la atención a Neil Gaiman y es por eso que Sandman # 54 (1993) está dedicado a Prez. La historia de Gaiman, “The Golden Boy” es absolutamente genial (definitivamente una de las mejores historias autoconclusivas que he leído en mi vida). El primer capítulo está narrado por el amigo de infancia de P. J. y habla sobre lo que sabe o lo que cree saber. Brubaker usa hábilmente un narrador no-confiable para hablar de lo que no se puede verificar. Si la madre de P.J. tuvo sexo con Prez en un evento de celebración de amor libre organizado por la comunidad hippy, ¿por qué nadie pudo probar que Prez era el padre de P.J.? P.J. está a punto de cumplir 18 años y su vida es un desastre. Ha roto con su novia, no tiene trabajo y se emborracha todo el tiempo, es huérfano, ya no tiene casa y duerme en el sofá de su mejor amigo, bebiendo cada vez más alcohol noche tras noche. P.J. tiene una intuición, la intuición habla de una promesa, de un potencial que aún no se ha alcanzado. Y nada parece importarle a P.J. hasta que se da cuenta de que debe averiguar qué le sucedió a su padre para darle sentido a su existencia.

The American Nightmare / la pesadilla americana

Ese es el comienzo de un viaje por carretera que cambia la vida de P.J. y sus dos amigos; viajan de California a Kansas, y finalmente a Wisconsin, en busca de respuestas. El siguiente capítulo es narrado por el otro amigo, y esta vez el enfoque es más sobre las acciones en el presente y no tanto sobre el pasado. Y el presente está lleno de emociones intensas, así como experiencias sexuales. El talentoso artista Eric Shanower adorna las páginas de Prez con sus líneas elegantes, limpias y precisas, creando cuerpos y movimientos que bailan en armonía. Rob Cain dijo que “los dibujos son magníficos. Hay hermosas representaciones de la forma humana”, pero también hay una atención al detalle y una calidad expresiva que explican por qué Shanower ganó el premio Eisner dos veces.

Como Kelly Harrass señala, esta es una historia de autodescubrimiento de adolescentes, pero también aborda inquietudes importantes, “La mayoría de las inquietudes sobre Estados Unidos que se mencionan en esta historia todavía existen y en realidad han empeorado en los casi veinte años desde que este cómic fue publicado”. Brubaker pudo anticipar lo que podría suceder años más tarde, su sensibilidad y capacidad de observación son, sin duda, la marca de un escritor brillante.

En el capítulo final, narrado por P.J., los 3 muchachos llegan a Wisconsin; finalmente se enterarán de lo que le pasó a Prez. Para mí, este capítulo fue especialmente conmovedor, ya que también he viajado desde California a Wisconsin, a menudo con preguntas que necesitaban una respuesta. En Wisconsin, P.J. habla con un viejo amigo de Prez: “Prez era un soñador, pero a diferencia de la mayoría de los que tienen sueños, él hizo los suyos realidad. Realmente sintió que nació para liderar este país, pero no anticipó el nivel de corrupción en el mundo. La gente se preocupa más por el dinero que por otras personas, y él pensó que podía cambiar eso”. En la historia de Neil Gaiman, Prez Rickard muere, pero en lugar de entrar en el reino de los muertos, es bienvenido en la tierra de los sueños gobernada por Sandman. Después de todo, ¿no es ese el mejor final que un adolescente idealista podría esperar? ¿Vivir como un sueño y ser una inspiración para los jóvenes? Prez afirma que “el mundo cambia cada vez que una persona cambia”. Y después de despertar del sueño, P.J. ha cambiado. Prez está muerto, pero el sueño sigue vivo. Y P.J. finalmente se da cuenta de que su vida tiene sentido. Este es un viaje de autodescubrimiento inolvidable, profundamente emotivo e irrepetible. Ojalá hubiese podido leer “Smells Like Teen President” cuando tenía 18 años.

May Films / películas de mayo

It's hard to believe that I was able to travel from California to Wisconsin and to see Avengers: Endgame (2019) with the same group of friends I used to watch all Marvel movies with. Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are responsible for one of the best and most ambitious superhero movies ever produced. The filmmakers had already impressed me with Avengers Infinity War and frankly I had no idea about how the sequel would turn out. I really enjoyed the time travel paradoxes, the impressive reunion of so many characters and especially the unpredictability of a story that, from the very beginning, shows what rarely appears on the comics: a group of defeated Avengers that have lost their purpose. Having seen all Marvel movies I had so much fun watching all the references to past events, and I loved seeing all my favorite characters interacting again one last time. It really is the end of an era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers Endgame was everything I hoped it could be and more, and it reminded me of how excited I was when the first Avengers movie was announced years ago. The cast for this one is absolutely impressive: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Evans (Captain America), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Brolin, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Renner and many, many more. 

Peter Hedges writes and directs Ben is Back (2018), a tragic film that revolves around the relationship of a mother and her son, and the way drug addiction has ruined their lives. Julia Roberts (The Normal Heart) is a mom deeply concerned about the well-being of her teenage son, Lucas Hedges (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Lady Bird), a charismatic boy that had a brilliant future ahead of him, before he became a drug addict. The two of them strike a deal: the teen will spend Christmas with his family, 24 hours out of the rehab center, under the constant surveillance of the mother. The son’s arrival is a strange moment, the mother is pleased to see him, but her daughter is worried about how this reunion might end. After all, they know the boy’s strategies: secret stash for drugs, disappearance of cash or jewelry in the house, sudden and unexplained absences, and constant lies and manipulations possibly only for a parent and their child. In less than a day, what starts like a tense situation escalates into an out of control conflict, and when the boy runs away, the mom follows him into the darkest, most gruesome and disgusting underworld of what seemed to be, at first, a perfectly idyllic American suburb. At times brutal and shocking, the filmmaker conveys all the anxiety, the fear, and the expectations of a family that must confront drug addiction. 

Written and directed by Jonah Hill, Mid90s (2018) is a fascinating and very realistic take on a summer that changes everything for Sunny Suljic, a 13-year-old boy who wants to grow up as fast as possible, and who desperately needs friends to escape from his abusive brother, Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea). Skating with a band of marginalized kids becomes part of the protagonist’s daily life, but he’ll also develop a strong sense of friendship and belonging. Heartfelt, honest and brutal, Mid90s perfectly depicts the doubts, fears and confusions of a group of teenagers that are trying to find their place in the world. The protagonist has his first sexual experience, but he also starts drinking too much alcohol and smoking weed. There is one moment in particular, in which Lucas Hedges confronts Sunny Suljic, despite the violence and the constant hitting, he cares for his little brother: that contradiction, the painful ways in which two brothers find themselves constantly at war, is a reminder of how complex relationships can be. Jonah Hill’s directorial debut is a magnificent tribute to the troubled and precocious lives of boys that feel the urge to fit in, no matter the cost.

Patinar con una banda de muchachos marginados se convierte en parte de la vida diaria del protagonista, pero también desarrollará un fuerte sentido de amistad y pertenencia. Emotiva, honesta y brutal, Mid90s representa perfectamente las dudas, temores y confusiones de un grupo de adolescentes que están tratando de encontrar su lugar en el mundo. El protagonista tiene su primera experiencia sexual, pero también comienza a beber demasiado alcohol y fumar marihuana. The Originals - Dave Gibbons

I’d say it’s relatively easy to guess what are the political inclinations of our favorite writers, their main concerns and interests, but it’s often harder to know what’s going on inside the head of our favorite pencilers. Even more so with artists that have participated in high profile projects such as Dave Gibbons. Co-creator of Watchmen, Gibbons was already a formidable British artist back in the late 70s and early 80s when he was illustrating numerous sci-fi adventures in the pages of 2000 AD. 

And every now and then, like actors who get bored of just acting in a movie and decide to direct it, artists also decide to write their own stories. And when that happens, there is no way of predicting the outcome. Some artists are amazing as illustrators but not so much as writers, however, there are plenty of artists who are also incredibly creative writers. 

Although I was aware of the fact that Gibbons had also written comics, for some reason I never had access to any of his production as a writer… until now. On a whim, I decided to acquire The Originals (2004), the story of two friends, Lel and Bok, who decide to join the coolest gang in town: the Originals. “When they walk, they look cool. When they ride, they drive fast. And when they hate, they fight – brutally”. For anyone who has seen films such as Quadrophenia, the idea of young people congregating in gangs and fighting in the streets of London will be familiar, and Gibbons himself talks about Quadrophenia in his foreword, but he talks about something else: “My mates and I went to the best clubs and listened to the latest imported music. Speed was the drug of choice and we’d stay up until we dropped. There were legendary all-weekend parties, mass convoys to coastal towns on public holidays and heroic battles with our archnemesis”.

This graphic novel is not simply a homage to 70s British film, it’s a revealing story in which Gibbons shares his past with us, not as a mere autobiography but rather as a transmuted biographical experience, which sure enough, had to go through the lens of science fiction: “The Originals takes place in a world both familiar and strange, where the young are angry, loyal and stylish. And the only thing more important than who your friends are is who your friends hate”. The world of The Originals, in many ways, is London in the 60s, but in many other ways, is a world of highly advanced technology in an alternative future (or past). 

The Originals 

Lel and Bok dream about becoming part of the Originals, and they’re certainly prepared to fight against the Dirt, the rival gang. As Gibbons explains how was for him to join the Mods, “there was the feeling of belonging to an exclusive group, with its own secret codes, uniforms and rituals”. After the two teenagers join the gang, they get caught up in a world of violence and drugs, which for them is tremendously exciting and, reckless as they are, they don’t care at all about the risks of having such a dangerous lifestyle.

Lel falls in love with Viv, and love is what ultimately makes him question the violent fights in which he participates constantly. Lel is willing to change for Viv, but at the same time it’s difficult for him to turn his back on his allies, the Originals and especially on his best friend Bok. One of the most dramatic moments takes place after a confrontation with the dirt in the middle of the road. Lel wakes up in the hospital and the doctors tell him that one of his friends is dead. Is it Viv, the love of his life, or Bok, his childhood friend? 

Perhaps what’s even more impressive is that Dave Gibbons himself was once in the same situation: “Another far more serious and somber real-life episode from the same time, which has deep emotional echoes in The Originals, was a fatal car crash that I was involved in. Incredibly, I was unhurt but, in the hospital, a policeman told me that one of my two friends had died. They were both dressed the same so there were a few minutes of awful confusion and anticipation of tragedy whilst the identity of the deceased was confirmed […] John Manning, was my best childhood friend and himself a scooter boy […] It was John that died. This book is dedicated to him”. There is so much emotional intensity in the final pages of The Originals, because Gibbons is remembering how traumatic it was for him to lose his best friend at a young age, but what moves the reader is not the memory itself but rather the way Gibbons manages to fictionalize it.

The Originals versus the Dirt

Dave Gibbons has always been a magnificent artist and in the pages of this graphic novel he proves his versatility. His visual style changes, celebrating the Op Art movement from the 60s. Gibbons is also incredibly careful with the design and the presentation of the book, doing the lettering himself and supervising even the minutest detail. There is a reason why this is a monochrome book, in Gibbons’ words: “I had early memories of World War II bomb sites and shored-up buildings in the smoky London of the 1950s and 60s that I wanted to conjure up as a setting. A setting which was, in my memory, grey and drained of colour”. An impressive script and absolutely astonishing art make The Originals one of the best Vertigo graphic novels, and it’s not surprising that it won the Eisner award for best graphic album in 2005.

Esta novela gráfica no es simplemente un homenaje a la película británica de los 70s, es una historia reveladora en la que Gibbons comparte su pasado con nosotros, no como una mera autobiografía, sino como una experiencia biográfica transmutada que, efectivamente, tenía que pasar por el lente de la ciencia ficción: “The Originals se desarrolla en un mundo familiar y extraño, donde los jóvenes están enojados, son leales y tienen estilo. Y lo único más importante que quiénes son tus amigos es a quién odian tus amigos”. El mundo de The Originals, en muchos sentidos, es Londres en los 60s, pero en muchos otros aspectos, es un mundo de tecnología altamente avanzada en un futuro (o pasado) alternativo.

Lel & Viv

Lel y Bok sueñan con unirse a los Originales, y ciertamente están preparados para luchar contra la Suciedad, la pandilla rival. Gibbons explica cómo fue para él unirse a los Mods, “existía la sensación de pertenecer a un grupo exclusivo, con sus propios códigos secretos, uniformes y rituales”. Después de que los dos adolescentes se unen a la pandilla, se ven atrapados en un mundo de violencia y drogas, que para ellos es tremendamente emocionante y, por imprudentes, no les importa en absoluto los riesgos de tener un estilo de vida tan peligroso.

Lel se enamora de Viv, y el amor es lo que finalmente le hace cuestionar las peleas violentas en las que participa constantemente. Lel está dispuesto a cambiar por Viv, pero al mismo tiempo le resulta difícil dar la espalda a sus colegas, a los Originales y especialmente a su mejor amigo Bok. Uno de los momentos más dramáticos tiene lugar después de un enfrentamiento con la Suciedad en medio de la carretera. Lel se despierta en el hospital y los médicos le dicen que alguien está muerto. ¿Es Viv, el amor de su vida, o Bok, su amigo de la infancia?

Quizás lo que es aún más impresionante es que el mismo Dave Gibbons estuvo una vez en la misma situación: “Otro episodio de la vida real mucho más serio y sombrío de aquella época, que tiene profundos ecos emocionales en The Originals, fue un accidente de coche fatal que tuve. Increíblemente, salí ileso pero, en el hospital, un policía me dijo que uno de mis dos amigos había muerto. Ambos estaban vestidos igual, así que hubo unos minutos de terrible confusión y anticipación de tragedia mientras se confirmó la identidad del fallecido [...] John Manning, fue mi mejor amigo de la infancia y él también era un muchacho motorista [...] Fue John quien murió. Este libro está dedicado a él”. Hay mucha intensidad emocional en las páginas finales de The Originals, porque Gibbons está recordando lo traumático que fue para él perder a su mejor amigo a una edad temprana, pero lo que conmueve al lector no es la memoria en sí, sino la forma en que Gibbons se las arregla para ficcionalizarla.

Violent conclusion / Una violenta conclusión

Dave Gibbons siempre ha sido un magnífico artista y en las páginas de esta novela gráfica demuestra su versatilidad. Su estilo visual cambia, celebrando el movimiento Op Art de los 60s. Gibbons también es increíblemente cuidadoso con el diseño y la presentación del libro, él mismo hace el rotulado y supervisa hasta el más mínimo detalle. Hay una razón por la que este es un libro monocromático, en las palabras de Gibbons: “Tuve recuerdos tempranos de los sitios bombardeados en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y de los edificios apuntalados en el Londres humeante de los años 50 y 60 que quise conjurar como escenario. Una configuración que, en mi memoria, era gris y vacía de color”. Un guión impresionante y un arte absolutamente asombroso hacen de The Originals una de las mejores novelas gráficas de Vertigo, y no es sorprendente que haya ganado el premio Eisner al mejor álbum gráfico el 2005.

April comics / Cómics de abril

I read a lot of amazing comics in April. After 80 years of uninterrupted publication, Detective Comics finally reached the milestone 1000th issue, and I’m glad to see that DC put together the best creative teams to pay homage to one of the greatest superheroes: Batman! The new arc of American Gods is quite promising. And, as usual, I enjoyed League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Tempest and Cinema Purgatorio. Planet of the Nerds # 1 was surprisingly good! The first issue of Section Zero was satisfactory. Conan the Barbarian, Invaders and Spider-Man Life Story continue to impress me. The conclusion of Die’s first arc was great and this was my favorite issue of the month. And now without further ado here are April comics as per solicitations:

Leí muchos cómics asombrosos en abril. Después de 80 años de publicación ininterrumpida, Detective Comics finalmente llega al emblemático número 1000, y me alegra ver que DC reunió a los mejores equipos creativos para rendir homenaje a uno de los más grandiosos superhéroes: Batman. El nuevo arco argumental de American Gods es bastante prometedor. Y, como siempre, disfruté con League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Tempest y Cinema Purgatorio. Planet of the Nerds # 1 fue sorprendentemente bueno. El primer número de Section Zero fue satisfactorio. Conan the Barbarian, Invaders y Spider-Man Life Story continúan impresionándome. La conclusión del primer arco de Die fue estupenda y este fue mi cómic favorito del mes. Y ahora, sin mayores preámbulos, ahí van los cómics de abril:
