Superman: The Man of Steel vol. 1 Deluxe Hardcover edition

In 2015 I finally wrote about John Byrne’s The Man of Steel, one of the best superhero origin stories ever published in the US. I had been wanting to write about it for years but for one reason or another I kept pushing it off. Of course, when I wrote that post I was planning on writing about the other Superman comics Byrne wrote and drew in the 80s. And seems like I’ll get a chance to do that soon, after almost 6 years of waiting.

A few months ago I received the wonderful hardcover edition of Superman: The Man of Steel vol. 1 by Byrne, Wolfman and Ordway. And one of the things I loved the most was the quality of the edition and the amazing restoration work done with the pages of the comic. As you might remember, back in the 80s, comics were published in cheap paper, using low quality ink and except for the cover, the interior pages would always present some sort of technical error or problem.

Although printing technology started changing in the late 80s and especially early 90s, before that it was normal to the typical benday dot pattern so common to 4-color printing as well as the shoddy misregistration of the colors, the smudging of lines, the faded blacks that would turn to grey and the actual ink that could stain your fingers much in the same way that a newspaper would. 

Certainly it would seem as if I have a nostalgic view on these old comics but the truth is simply this: at the time, there was no better alternative when it came to printing them. Now a common mistake in new editions of old material is to recolor everything, in my post about the Conan Omnibus edition, I already talked at length about this while comparing the poor job made by Dark Horse’s recoloring of Conan and the excellent job done by Marvel with the same comics. 

Recoloring seems to be tempting, some inexperienced colorist wants to use some flashy photoshop trick or worse decides to change all the color palette and the result is, very frequently, disappointing. So I was delighted to see that Jeb Woodard, editor of the Superman collected edition, instructed Erika Rothberg not only to preserve all the original coloring but also to restore it.

The result is magnificent and also a fitting homage to the original intentions of Byrne and original colorist Tom Ziuco. Like I said before, I plan to review the actual comics but for now I wanted to compare the 80s paged with the hardcover edition from 2020.

En 2015, finalmente escribí sobre The Man of Steel de John Byrne, una de las mejores historias de origen superheroico publicadas en Estados Unidos. Había querido escribir sobre ello durante años, pero por una razón u otra seguí postergándolo. Por supuesto, cuando escribí ese post estaba planeando escribir sobre los otros cómics de Superman que Byrne escribió y dibujó en los 80s. Y parece que tendré la oportunidad de hacerlo pronto, después de casi 6 años de espera.

Hace unos meses recibí la maravillosa edición de tapa dura de Superman: The Man of Steel vol. 1 de Byrne, Wolfman y Ordway. Y una de las cosas que más me gustó fue la calidad de la edición y el increíble trabajo de restauración realizado con las páginas del cómic. Como recordaréis, allá por los 80s, los cómics se publicaban en papel barato, con tinta de baja calidad y salvo la portada, las páginas interiores siempre presentaban algún tipo de error o problema técnico.

Aunque la tecnología de impresión comenzó a cambiar a finales de los 80s y especialmente a principios de los 90s, antes de eso era normal el típico patrón de puntos tan común en la impresión de 4 colores, así como el registro erróneo de los colores, las líneas borrosas, los negros desvanecidos que se volverían gris y la tinta que podría mancharte los dedos de la misma manera que lo haría un periódico.

Ciertamente parecería que tengo una visión nostálgica de estos viejos cómics pero la verdad es simplemente esta: en ese momento, no había mejor alternativa a la hora de imprimirlos. Ahora, un error común en las nuevas ediciones de material antiguo es cambiar el color por completo, en mi post sobre la edición de Conan Omnibus, ya hablé extensamente sobre esto mientras comparaba el mal trabajo realizado por el recoloreado de Conan por parte de Dark Horse y el excelente trabajo realizado por Marvel con los mismos cómics.

Recolorear parece tentador, algún colorista sin experiencia quiere usar algún truco de photoshop llamativo o, peor aún, decide cambiar toda la paleta de colores y el resultado es, muy frecuentemente, decepcionante. Así que me encantó ver que Jeb Woodard, editor de la edición recopilada de Superman, instruyó a Erika Rothberg que no sólo preservase todos los colores originales sino también que los restaurase.

El resultado es magnífico y también un homenaje apropiado a las intenciones originales de Byrne y el colorista original Tom Ziuco. Como dije antes, planeo reseñar los cómics, pero por ahora quería comparar las páginas de los 80 con la edición de tapa dura del 2020.

Marvels Snapshots: Sub-Mariner & Fantastic Four

After 25 years of the publication of the groundbreaking Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, both creators decided to celebrate this special anniversary in the best possible way: with a series of Marvels-related projects, such as Marvels Snapshots. As most readers will remember, Namor the Sub-Mariner and the Fantastic Four share a special bond in the Marvel Universe. Sure, Namor was created in the 40s, but the character remained in limbo for decades until Stan Lee and Jack Kirby reintroduced him in the Marvel Universe in the pages of Fantastic Four, ushering in a new era of splendor for the prince of the 7 seas and future ruler of Atlantis. 

Alex Ross

It's only fitting, then, that the first issue of this extraordinary 8-issue miniseries focuses on a character that was around many years before Lee and Kirby created the Marvel Universe. “Reunion” (originally published in Sub-Mariner: Marvels Snapshots, May 2020) it’s a unique and intense story about post traumatic stress disorder and the way it can affect the lives of ordinary and extraordinary individuals. 

Now that World War II is over, the heroes have returned home. And Betts, a normal woman, is quite excited about her date with Namor, the Sub-Mariner. They had met before years ago, and when they see each other again she realizes he hasn’t aged a single day. As an Atlantean, he can live hundreds of years without aging, but Bett’s hair is already starting to get grey. She’s not the girl she used to be. And Namor hasn’t changed a bit.

Jerry Ordway

Except that, after the war, everything has changed. Betts can see how her friends and relatives have returned home completely changed. some of them have lost limbs, others have turned into alcoholics as their only way to deal with the trauma of war. All of that is made evident since the first page. And even Namor, the Avenging Son of Atlantis, has been deeply affected by the war. Over the course of the date, it becomes evident that Namor hasn’t fully recovered from the trauma of the concentration camps and the mass graves. There is a unique moment of vulnerability in which the powerful Atlantean breaks down and cries, while Betts does her best to console him. 

Jerry Ordway

Alan Brennert writes a wonderful story that summarizes what it means to go to war and come back home full of scars, both external and internal. And Jerry Ordway, a penciler famous for his work in Superman in the 80s, proves to be the perfect artist for this particular project. Ordway always had a classic sensibility that allows him to revive the nostalgia of the 40s without sacrificing his impressive visual narrative. The coloring by Espen Grundetjern adds a warm and very special feel to Ordway’s pages. Finally, Alex Ross’ cover portrays Namor as a majestic, regal and powerful figure. What a fantastic first issue for Marvels Snapshots!

In Fantastic Four: Marvels Snapshots (May 2020) we get to see what happens when Johnny Storm, AKA the Human Torch, attends his high school reunion. Dorrie used to be Johnny’s girlfriend years ago, and now she’s excited at the prospect of seeing him again. As readers, we know how much the lives of the Fantastic Four changed after gaining their superpowers, but here writers Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer try to answer a different question: how does the lives of those close to the Fantastic Four changed? 

Jerry Ordway

Dorrie still remembers how afraid she was of being accidentally burned by Johnny. But also an old villain who has retired, such as Asbestos Man, reflects on how futile it was to engage in battle with the Human Torch all those years ago, and how bad he’s health is now because of his exposure to asbestos. And when Johnny finally arrives to the high school reunion, his status as a celebrity seems to cause more friction than anything else. Here artist Benjamin Dewey excels in capturing the emotion and expressiveness of the protagonists of the story. And Jordie Bellaire’s colors are spot on, as is Alex Ross’ fantastic cover.

Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los héroes han regresado a casa. Y Betts, una mujer normal, está bastante emocionada por su cita con Namor. Se habían conocido hace años, y cuando se vuelven a ver, ella se da cuenta de que él no ha envejecido ni un sólo día. The Punisher # 1-4 (2000) - Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon

The beginning of the 21st century was truly a golden age for Marvel Comics, all thanks to English, Scottish and Irish writers like Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis who revitalized superheroes that in the past had fallen in the hands of rather incompetent writers. For some reason, in 1998, someone at Marvel had decided that it was time for Punisher to meet the angels from heaven and be transformed into “a supernatural angel of vengeance”, as Brian Cronin explains in his column about “stories that are likely best left forgotten”.

In only 2 pages, Garth Ennis quickly fixes this continuity issue and reinstates Frank Castle as a street vigilante, an urban legend that all criminals fear and know as the Punisher. In “Welcome Back, Frank” (originally published in The Punisher vol. 5 # 1, April 2000, as part of the Marvels Knight initiative), the Punisher explains this will be a “Solo act again. No Micro. No gimmicks. No fancy ammo, no battle-vans, no hi-tech surveillance. Just the basics”.

Punisher is no superhero. That much is clear. He never was one. After witnessing how his whole family is murdered, this Vietnam veteran decides to take justice in his own hands, and swears to kill every criminal in New York City. According to Ennis, Frank Castle is “a mass-murderer, whose bodycount must run well into the tens of thousands by now”. 

Punisher doesn’t believe in rehabilitating criminals, he believes in putting a bullet through their skulls. And the New York Police Department doesn’t seem to care about what he does with his free time. However, to maintain appearances, the commissioner decides to create a task force to deal with the Punisher as we can seen in “Badaboom, Badabing” (The Punisher # 2, May 2000). The commissioner names detective Soap as the leader of the task force, the most useless and mediocre officer in the whole force, a man who hasn’t been able to solve a single case in decades. The rest of the task force is comprised by Buddy Plug, a behavioral psychologist who looks like a deeply disturbed individual. 

In “The Devil by the Horns” (The Punisher # 3, May 2000), we get to see the exciting confrontation between Punisher and Daredevil. Ennis writes an intense sequence in which Punisher basically forces Daredevil to take the kind of decision he takes constantly, killing someone to prevent more deaths. In the end, all the philosophical differences between the vigilante and the superhero are narrowed down to a finger on a gun’s trigger.  

In “Wild Kingdom” (The Punisher # 4, June 2000) the mafia leader Ma Gnucci wrongfully believes she has cornered Frank Castle in the Central Park Zoo, but even without weapons, the Punisher proves to be every bit as lethal. This entire miniseries is penciled by the legendary British artist Steve Dillon, famous for his iconic run in Judge Dredd and for Preacher. Dillon has always been a magnificent and very creative artist, capable of creating a new world or reconstructing an old one, or jumping back and forth from one to another. His visual talent resides not only in his unique worldbuilding capability but also in the expressiveness of his characters. Jimmy Palmiotti is the inker and Chris Sotomayor is the colorist, and together they form a great artistic team. And the extraordinary Tim Bradstreet provides provocative and haunting covers, creating a rich atmosphere of violence and fear.

El comienzo del siglo XXI fue verdaderamente una edad de oro para Marvel Comics, todo gracias a escritores ingleses, escoceses e irlandeses como Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis y Garth Ennis, quienes revitalizaron a superhéroes que en el pasado habían caído en manos de escritores bastante incompetentes. Frank Castle (Punisher)

En sólo 2 páginas, Garth Ennis soluciona rápidamente este problema de continuidad y reinstala a Frank Castle como un vigilante callejero, una leyenda urbana que todos los criminales temen y conocen como Punisher. En “Bienvenido de vuelta, Frank” (publicado originalmente en The Punisher vol. 5 # 1, abril del 2000, como parte de la iniciativa Marvels Knight), Punisher explica que esto será un “acto en solitario nuevamente. No Micro. Sin trucos. Sin munición extravagante, sin camionetas de combate, sin vigilancia de alta tecnología. Sólo lo básico ”.

Punisher no es un superhéroe. Eso está claro. Nunca lo fue. Después de presenciar cómo toda su familia es asesinada, este veterano de Vietnam decide tomar la justicia por su mano y jura matar a todos los criminales de la ciudad de New York. Neighbors / vecinos

Punisher no cree en la rehabilitación de criminales, cree en ponerles una bala en el cráneo. Y al Departamento de Policía de New York no parece importarle lo que hace con su tiempo libre. Sin embargo, para mantener las apariencias, el comisionado decide crear un grupo de trabajo para lidiar con Punisher, como podemos ver en “Badaboom, Badabing” (The Punisher # 2, mayo del 2000). El comisionado nombra al detective Soap como líder del grupo de trabajo, el oficial más inútil y mediocre de todos, un hombre que no ha podido resolver ni un sólo caso en décadas. El resto del grupo de trabajo está compuesto por Buddy Plug, un psicólogo conductista que parece ser un individuo profundamente perturbado.

Daredevil versus Punisher

En “El diablo por los cuernos” (The Punisher # 3, mayo del 2000), podemos ver el impactante enfrentamiento entre Punisher y Daredevil. Ennis escribe una secuencia intensa en la que Punisher básicamente obliga a Daredevil a tomar el tipo de decisión que él toma constantemente, matar a alguien para evitar más muertes. Al final, todas las diferencias filosóficas entre el vigilante y el superhéroe se reducen a un dedo en el gatillo de una pistola.

En "Wild Kingdom" (The Punisher # 4, junio de 2000), la jefa de la mafia Ma Gnucci cree erróneamente que ha acorralado a Frank Castle en el zoológico de Central Park, pero incluso sin armas, Punisher resulta ser igual de letal. Toda esta miniserie fue dibujada a lápiz por el legendario artista británico Steve Dillon, famoso por su icónica carrera en Judge Dredd y Preacher. Dillon siempre ha sido un artista magnífico y muy creativo, capaz de crear un mundo nuevo o reconstruir uno antiguo, o saltar de uno a otro. Su talento visual reside no sólo en su capacidad única de construcción de mundos, sino también en la expresividad de sus personajes. Jimmy Palmiotti es el entintador y Chris Sotomayor es el colorista, y juntos forman un gran equipo artístico. Y el extraordinario Tim Bradstreet ofrece portadas provocativas e inquietantes, creando una rica atmósfera que desborda violencia y miedo.

December comics / cómics de diciembre

 A dozen of comics helped me celebrate the end of 2020! Very quickly Doctor Doom has become my favorite ongoing series, I’m enjoying it so much! Marvel and Marvels Snapshots are always quite good. My favorite comic of the month was Strange Adventures #7, probably the best title DC has published in years! And now, without further ado, here are December 2020 comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN JESUS NEW MESSIAH #1

¡Una docena de cómics me ayudaron a celebrar el final del 2020! Muy rápidamente Doctor Doom se ha convertido en mi serie favorita mensual, ¡la estoy disfrutando mucho! Marvel y Marvels Snapshots siempre son bastante buenas. Mi cómic favorito del mes fue Strange Adventures # 7, ¡probablemente el mejor título que DC ha publicado en años! Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de diciembre del 2020:
