Marvels Snapshots: Avengers & Captain America

Every year I spend hours making a ranking of the best published titles and the best authors. 2020 was a strange year, the first time in a decade in which no British writers were on my best-of list. It was also the first time I included a writer on the list based on a single comic book. That writer is Barbara Randall Kesel and the comic is “Heart Rate” (originally published in Avengers: Marvels Snapshots, January 2021). 

Alex Ross

The story is told from the perspective of Kerry, a woman who has recently moved to New York and is virtually homeless due to a supervillain destroying the building in which she lived. Relying on favors and asking friends for help, she is slowly starting to rebuild her life. Until one day, of course, a gigantic robot starts to destroy the neighborhood and the Avengers can’t stop it on time. 

Kerry & Jay

Kerry has to find shelter as soon as possible, and in the chaos she runs into police officer Jay, who’s trying to help people. Together they try to calm down everyone by asking them to tell stories of their lives in New York, the city with the largest amount per capita of superheroes. Kerry remembers how she casually met Wonder Man and Beast outside the Avengers mansion, and how unimpressed she was with Wonder Man’s flirtation. All of this is connected to Michelinie and Byrne's run on Avengers. Jay’s story takes place in a bar, in which Tony Stark is drinking (the story, of course, takes place during the Demon in a Bottle saga, when Iron Man becomes an alcoholic). Jay has a heated debate with Tony, whom he has never met before. However, as irritated as Tony might be, he recognizes that Jay was right, and a couple of minutes later, as Iron Man, he makes him an offer.

Thor, Count Nefaria, Iron Man & Captain America

While the battle rages on, the normal men and women of New York are surviving and doing what humanity always does in its darkest hours: telling stories. Kerry and Jay are remembering what it means to live among people with extraordinary powers and abilities. In a desperate situation and against all odds, Kerry and Jay find each other and promise to become a couple if they survive the day. Barbara Randall Kesel does a remarkable job that doesn’t focus on the love between a man and a woman but rather on the promise of that future love. And perhaps for anyone that has recently broken up with their significant other, that promise seems to be of the utmost importance. Staz Johnson pencils these pages with grace and aplomb, while veteran inker Tom Palmer pitches in, and Jim Charalampidis colors it. Alex Ross’ depiction of the armored avenger is as stunning as it is heroic.

Wonder Man, Beast & Kerry

In Captain America: Marvels Snapshots (June 2020), writer Mark Russell asks what is the result of racial segregation in the Marvel Universe. In an impoverished black community, the effects of a large-scale attack are more devastating than ever. However, even a superhero like Captain America doesn’t realize what is going on and considers matters solved as soon as the threat has been dealt with. Felix, an African American boy, had already proved to be smarter than everyone else, but his family has no money, no resources, and after the attack, the situation is even worse. Felix is an intelligent boy, but desperate as he is, he ends up joining the ranks of the criminal organization A.I.M. I applaud Russell for trying to answer questions about race, poverty and unequal access to opportunities. The dynamic art is provided by Ramón Pérez and the coloring by Rico Renzi. In his cover, Alex Ross paints a Captain America that not only has a noble expression but also a posture that screams determination, as it is befitting to the Sentinel of Liberty.

Todos los años me paso horas haciendo un ranking de los mejores títulos publicados y de los mejores autores. El 2020 fue un año extraño, la primera vez en una década en la que ningún escritor británico estaba en mi lista de los mejores. También fue la primera vez que incluí a una escritora en la lista basándome en un sólo cómic. Esa escritora es Barbara Randall Kesel y el cómic es "El pulso del corazón" (publicado originalmente en Avengers: Marvels Snapshots, enero de 2021).

Alex Ross

La historia se cuenta desde la perspectiva de Kerry, una mujer que se ha mudado recientemente a New York y está prácticamente sin techo debido a que un supervillano destruyó el edificio en el que vivía. Apoyándose en favores y pidiendo ayuda a sus amigos, poco a poco ella está comenzando a reconstruir su vida. Hasta que un día, por supuesto, un robot gigantesco comienza a destruir el vecindario y los Vengadores no pueden detenerlo a tiempo.

Captain America & Falcon

Kerry tiene que encontrar refugio lo antes posible, y en el caos se encuentra con el oficial de policía Jay, que está tratando de ayudar a la gente. Juntos intentan calmar a todos pidiéndoles que cuenten historias de sus vidas en New York, la ciudad con mayor cantidad per cápita de superhéroes. Felix

En Captain America: Marvels Snapshots (junio de 2020), el escritor Mark Russell pregunta cuál es el resultado de la segregación racial en el Universo Marvel. En una comunidad negra empobrecida, los efectos de un ataque a gran escala son más devastadores que nunca. Sin embargo, incluso un superhéroe como el Capitán América no se da cuenta de lo que está sucediendo y considera que los asuntos se resuelven tan pronto como se arresta a los villanos. Félix, un niño afroamericano, ya había demostrado ser más inteligente que los demás, pero su familia no tiene dinero ni recursos, y después del ataque, la situación es aún peor. Félix es un chico inteligente, pero desesperado como está, acaba uniéndose a las filas de la organización criminal A.I.M. Aplaudo a Russell por intentar responder preguntas sobre raza, pobreza y acceso desigual a las oportunidades. El arte dinámico lo aporta Ramón Pérez y el color es de Rico Renzi. En su portada, Alex Ross pinta a un Capitán América que no sólo tiene una expresión noble sino también una postura que grita determinación, como corresponde al Centinela de la Libertad.

Adventures of Superman # 424 & 425 - Marv Wolfman & Jerry Ordway

After Crisis on Infinite Earths, the DC universe was completely restructured. As I explained before, this meant the revamping of Superman at the hands of John Byrne, who was entitled with the flagship title Superman, starting with a new number one, and Action Comics. Unlike today, in which every year Marvel and DC decide to reset the numbering on pretty much all their titles, back in the 80s they had a more elegant solution. They kept the original numbering but changed the name of the title from Superman to Adventures of Superman. 

Marv Wolfman, the man responsible for Crisis on Infinite Earths, was the writer of Adventures of Superman and Jerry Ordway was the artist. As I had mentioned before, I read all of this years ago in the Spanish translated version from Ediciones Zinco. Since Ediciones Zinco had around 30 pages of content they could always publish an entire comic (22 pages) and in the remaining 8 or so pages they would include a fraction of Adventures of Superman, so in 3 issues of Ediciones Zinco there would be 3 Byrne comics and one Wolfman / Ordway issue that had been divided into 3. And that sure made for an interesting reading, let me tell you that!

In “Man’o War” (originally published in Adventures of Superman # 424, January 1987) a middle east terrorist group attacks Metropolis, Superman of course defeats them easily. Wolfman’s narrative strength isn’t focused on the immediate threat, id est, the terrorists, but rather on the Machiavellian mind of Lex Luthor, who has devised a way to manipulate Lois Lane. As we all know, before COIE superhero comics were rather simplistic: “As a kid, I hated Luthor because every month Lex would star in some 8 -or 12- page story where he would first have to break out of prison. He would invariably hatch a scheme that would come down to his building a 50-foot robot to rob some bank. Superman would stop him at the end of 8 pages and send him back to prison”, explains Wolfman. And yes, I’ve read a few of those pre-COIE stories and Wolfman isn’t exaggerating. 

Bank robbers seem to be classic superhero opponents, but that trope gets old pretty fast, as clarified by Wolfman: “Even as a kid I thought this was dumb. If I had the money to build a 50-foot robot, why would I need to rob a bank? Luthor had to spend more money on his robots and hideouts than any bank ever has on hand. I wondered why he didn’t use his incredible scientific genius to legally make far more money than he could ever possibly steal”. The new Lex Luthor is the second or third richest man in Metropolis, he doesn’t need to rob a bank. But he is an even more dangerous threat because of his socioeconomic power. 

Terrorists in Metropolis / terroristas en Metrópolis

“Going the Gauntlet” (Adventures of Superman # 425, February 1987), introduces professor Hamilton. In the previous issue, we also had the first appearance of Cat Grant, who will become an important supporting character throughout the series. These new characters created by Wolfman and Ordway remained as important elements of the Superman mythos more than a decade or two after their debut. 

Jerry Ordway pencils both issues and Mick Machlan is the inker. The artwork is consistent and good enough. For those who might think the cover seems outdated, here is an explanation by Wolfman: “I lobbied hard to do a new version of the Superman # 12 cover from the 1940s. Jerry did a magnificent job, and that picture, showing Superman with an eagle on his shoulder, standing before the American flag -hidden in the color streaks of an evening sky- is one of the most beautiful Superman designs done in the last 50 years”.

Después de las crisis en tierras infinitas, el universo de DC fue completamente reestructurado. Como expliqué antes, esto significó la renovación de Superman a manos de John Byrne, quien tenía el título insignia de Superman, comenzando con un nuevo número uno, y Action Comics. A diferencia de hoy, en el que cada año Marvel y DC deciden restablecer la numeración en casi todos sus títulos, allá por los 80s tenían una solución más elegante. Mantuvieron la numeración original pero cambiaron el nombre del título de Superman a Adventures of Superman.

Marv Wolfman, el hombre responsable de Crisis on Infinite Earths, fue el escritor de Adventures of Superman y Jerry Ordway fue el artista. Como mencioné antes, leí todo esto hace años en la versión traducida al español de Ediciones Zinco. Como Ediciones Zinco tenía alrededor de 30 páginas de contenido, siempre podían publicar un cómic completo (22 páginas) y en las 8 o más páginas restantes incluirían una fracción de Adventures of Superman, por lo que en 3 números de Ediciones Zinco habría 3 cómics de Byrne y uno de Wolfman / Ordway partido en 3. Y déjenme decirles que eso, sin duda, hacía que la lectura fuese más interesante.

Lex Luthor & Professor Hamilton

En "Hombre de guerra" (publicado originalmente en Adventures of Superman # 424, enero de 1987) un grupo terrorista del Medio Oriente ataca Metrópolis, Superman, por supuesto, los derrota fácilmente. La fuerza narrativa de Wolfman no se centra en la amenaza inmediata, es decir, los terroristas, sino en la mente maquiavélica de Lex Luthor, que ha ideado una forma de manipular a Lois Lane. Como todos sabemos, antes de Crisis, los cómics de superhéroes eran bastante simplistas: “Cuando era niño, odiaba a Luthor porque todos los meses Lex protagonizaba una historia de 8 o 12 páginas en la que primero tenía que escapar de la cárcel. Invariablemente tramaba un plan que se reduciría a construir un robot de 15 metros para robar un banco. Superman lo detendría al final de las 8 páginas y lo enviaría de regreso a prisión”, explica Wolfman. Y sí, he leído algunas de esas historias anteriores a Crisis y Wolfman no está exagerando.

Los ladrones de bancos parecen ser los clásicos oponentes de los superhéroes, pero ese cliché envejece bastante rápido, como lo aclaró Wolfman: “Incluso cuando era niño pensaba que esto era tonto. Si tuviera el dinero para construir un robot de 15 metros, ¿por qué tendría que robar un banco? Luthor tuvo que gastar más dinero en sus robots y guaridas de lo que cualquier banco tiene a mano. Me pregunté por qué no utilizó su increíble genio científico para ganar legalmente mucho más dinero del que podría robar”. El nuevo Lex Luthor es el segundo o tercer hombre más rico de Metrópolis, no necesita robar un banco. Pero es una amenaza aún más peligrosa debido a su poder socioeconómico.

The attack continues / el ataque continúa

"Yendo hacia el guantelete" (Adventures of Superman # 425, febrero de 1987), presenta al profesor Hamilton. En el número anterior, también tuvimos la primera aparición de Cat Grant, quien se convertirá en un personaje secundario importante a lo largo de la serie. Estos nuevos personajes creados por Wolfman y Ordway permanecieron como elementos importantes del mito de Superman más de una década o dos después de su debut.

Jerry Ordway dibuja a lápiz ambos números y Mick Machlan es el entintador. El arte es consistente y lo suficientemente bueno. Para aquellos que puedan pensar que la portada parece obsoleta, aquí hay una explicación de Wolfman: “Presioné mucho para hacer una nueva versión de la portada de Superman # 12 de 1940. Jerry hizo un trabajo magnífico, y esa imagen, que muestra a Superman con un águila en el hombro, de pie ante la bandera estadounidense -oculta en las rayas de color de un cielo vespertino- es uno de los diseños de Superman más bonitos realizados en los últimos 50 años”.

March comics / cómics de marzo

I stayed at home for spring break, but if you think I was bored, oh boy, you are wrong! I had a veritable overdose of new comics, more than in 2020 or even 2019. Eternals continues to be quite good, as well as Marvels Snapshots. I was delighted by the amazing art in Captain America Anniversary Tribute. Proctor Valley Road is a promising start, and Space Bastards and King in Black Wiccan and Hulkling were really entertaining. But my favorite issue of the month was Marvel #5. Of course I’m also happy to finally be able to read some of Avatar’s best series such as Dicks, Caliban, Anna Mercury, Doktor Sleepless and War Stories. And I’m proud, at last, to own Alan Moore’s From Hell, a true masterpiece! And now, without further ado, here are March comics as per solicitations:

ANNA MERCURY TP VOL 01 THE CUTTER (MR)

MERCURY HEAT TP VOL 01

MERCURY HEAT TP VOL 02

Me quedé en casa durante las vacaciones de primavera, pero si creéis que estaba aburrido, ¡oh, vaya que os equivocáis! Tuve una verdadera sobredosis de cómics nuevos, muchos más que en el 2020 o incluso en el 2019. Eternals sigue siendo bastante bueno, al igual que Marvels Snapshots. Me encantó el asombroso arte en el Captain America Anniversary Tribute. Proctor Valley Road tiene un comienzo prometedor, y Space Bastards y King in Black Wiccan and Hulkling fueron realmente entretenidos. Pero mi número favorito del mes fue Marvel # 5. Por supuesto, también estoy feliz de poder finalmente leer algunas de las mejores series de Avatar, como Dicks, Caliban, Anna Mercury, Doktor Sleepless y War Stories. ¡Y estoy orgulloso de haber conseguido por fin From Hell de Alan Moore, una verdadera obra maestra! Vuelas otras 700 millas de regreso a casa hasta tu pista de aterrizaje en Iwo Jima, el combustible corre cada vez más bajo, nada más que el océano en millas a la redonda. Cualquier daño de batalla que hayas sufrido reducirá aún más tus posibilidades. Vuelve y estarás en el club. Y más buenas noticias: puedes hacerlo todo de nuevo mañana.

Joel Edgerton directs Boy Erased (2018), based on Garrard Conley's autobiographical book, an insightful and fascinating exploration of the conflicts between traditional religion and alternative forms of sexuality. When a college freshman magnificently played by Lucas Hedges (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Lady Bird) realizes he is gay, he soon understands how difficult it’ll be for his very religious parents, Nicole Kidman (The Others) and Russell Crowe (Noah), to accept him. In college, the protagonist is raped by his only friend Joe Alwyn, and shortly after that, his parents send him to a conversion center, in which he and other young men will be abused and psychologically tortured under the pretext of getting rid of their homosexual inclinations. Boy Erased is especially shocking not only because is a real story but also because of how recent it is (the events take place approximately 15 years ago). Edgerton creates a moving and intense film, in which the only way to survive is to remain true to oneself, even if that is the most challenging and difficult road. The final scene between the protagonist and his father is incredibly moving, and one that I in particular could never forget. The all-star cast includes Xavier Dolan (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Les amours imaginaires) and Troye Sivan (famous gay singer). 

Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom (2012) has a truly extraordinary groups of actors: Bruce Willis (Looper), Edward Norton, Bill Murray (The Dead Don’t Die), Frances McDormand (Burn After Reading), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Jared Gilman, Jason Schwartzman and Lucas Hedges (Ben is Back). The main story follows the misadventures of a 12-year old boy who has fallen in love with a girl of the same age, and so he escapes from his Boy Scouts-like group to be with the girl of his dreams. There are other subplots going on at the same time but don’t add much to the movie. I think Anderson tries to evoke the innocence of the first love and I’d say he succeeds to a certain degree, however, with such formidable actors one would expect a more captivating movie.  

When David Fincher adapted Chuck Palahniuk’s novel, Fight Club (1999), it became a modern classic. I had seen it such a long time ago that now I felt like I was watching it again for the first time. Edward Norton is an emotionally numbed man who goes to group therapy events, trying to find a moment that feels real, trying to find in himself an emotional reaction. He and Helena Bonham Carter pretend to be cancer survivors or anything they need to pretend to be, in order to gain access to these safe spaces in which people cry and share their despair. But when the protagonist meets Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood), a mysterious man with sketchy businesses, they will be the founders of the Fight Club, an anarchic association of men that start fighting with each other an end up planning terrorist attacks. Between Palahniuk’s dark and bleak thoughts on the human condition, and Fincher’s dense and emotionally charged scenes, all viewers will feel at some point uncomfortable, shocked and even disgusted, but somehow it all works perfectly within the mind frame of the film. Definitely one of Fincher’s best cinematographic accomplishments. 

Alejandro Amenábar directs Abre los ojos (1997), a fascinating film and one of the very best I’ve seen in my life. 2 years before The Matrix, this Spanish production was suggesting the possibility of living in a virtual reality without knowing about it, while questioning what it means to be in the right state of mind when the world isn’t quire right. Eduardo Noriega is a wealthy young man who enjoys having sex with beautiful women such as the psychotic Najwa Nimri but also the sweet and adorable Penélope Cruz. After a nearly fatal car accident, the protagonist wakes up in a hospital, his face completely disfigured. Medical science isn’t advanced enough to reconstruct his face, and even if he has all the money in the world, nothing can be done about it, or can it? Without spoiling the plot too much, the protagonist lives in his own nightmare, fearing to even look at himself in the mirror, while his psychiatrist, Chete Lera, tries to convince him that it is all in his mind. This cinematographic masterpiece has some of the most impressive and intense scenes ever, and at the same time the scrip isn’t only mindboggling but also absolutely coherent and riveting. Due to the sci-fi elements, Abre los ojos is the kind of film that will never be old or anachronic, and whoever watches it will remember it forever as the remarkable masterwork it is.

Boy Erased es especialmente impactante no sólo porque es una historia real, sino también por lo reciente que es (los hechos ocurrieron hace aproximadamente 15 años). Edgerton crea una película conmovedora e intensa, en la que la única forma de sobrevivir es permanecer fiel a uno mismo, incluso si ese es el camino más desafiante y difícil. La escena final entre el protagonista y su padre es increíblemente conmovedora, y una que yo en particular jamás podría olvidar. El elenco de estrellas incluye a Xavier Dolan (famoso por su papel como adolescente gay en Les amours imaginaires) y Troye Sivan (famoso cantante gay).

La historia principal sigue las desventuras de un chiquillo de 12 años que se ha enamorado de una chica de la misma edad, por ello se escapa de su grupo similar a los Boy Scouts para estar con la muchacha de sus sueños. Hay otras subtramas que se desarrollan al mismo tiempo, pero no aportan mucho a la película. Creo que Anderson intenta evocar la inocencia del primer amor y yo diría que lo logra hasta cierto punto, sin embargo, con actores tan formidables, uno esperaría una película más encantadora.

Entre los pensamientos oscuros y sombríos de Palahniuk sobre la condición humana y las escenas densas y cargadas de emoción de Fincher, todos los espectadores se sentirán en algún momento incómodos, conmocionados e incluso disgustados, pero de alguna manera todo funciona perfectamente dentro del esquema mental de la película. Definitivamente uno de los mejores logros cinematográficos de Fincher.

Después de un accidente automovilístico casi fatal, el protagonista se despierta en un hospital con el rostro completamente desfigurado. La ciencia médica no está lo suficientemente avanzada como para reconstruir su rostro, e incluso si él tiene todo el dinero del mundo, no se puede hacer nada al respecto, ¿o sí? Sin estropear demasiado la trama, el protagonista vive en su propia pesadilla, temiendo incluso mirarse al espejo, mientras su psiquiatra, Chete Lera, intenta convencerlo de que todo está en su mente. Esta obra maestra cinematográfica tiene algunas de las escenas más impresionantes e intensas jamás hechas y, al mismo tiempo, el guión no sólo es alucinante, sino también absolutamente coherente y fascinante. Debido a los elementos de ciencia ficción, Abre los ojos es el tipo de película que nunca será vieja o anacrónica, y quien la vea la recordará para siempre como la notable obra maestra que es.
