To celebrate Halloween I decided to watch at least one proper horror movie, although that doesn't mean The Tale won't send shivers down your spine. Jennifer Fox’s The Tale (2018) is a fascinating autobiographical film about a documentarist (wonderfully played by Laura Dern) who is confronted by the unhealed wounds of the past. When she comes across a very revealing short story she wrote when she was 13, she refuses to believe that she was sexually abused by an adult in which she trusted completely, but then as she starts documenting her past and interviewing people that went through the same experience, she understands how deeply was she manipulated, to the point that she thought it was OK to have sex with a man more than twice her age. The Tale is shocking and disturbing in a very real way, not only because it’s based on true facts but also because it carefully delves into the psychology of the abuser as well as the coping mechanisms of the survivors of sexual abuse. 

Based on the Stephen King’s novel and directed by Andy Muschietti, It (2017) is a horror movie that begins with the disappearance of a child at the hands of an evil creature that resembles a clown, played by Bill Skarsgård. A year later, Jaeden Lieberher, the brother of the kid that disappeared, starts feeling the presence of “it”, an undefined but very powerful entity that feeds on children and fear. Soon, the boy and his group of friends (Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, etc.) are confronted with their deepest fears. This horror movie kept me at the edge of my seat and I must say that I particularly enjoyed the way the sinister history of the town is interwoven with the sad and tragic lives of these kids, that in one way or another, are abused by their parents.

Para celebrar Halloween vi una película de terror en toda regla, aunque eso no signifique que, a su manera, The Tale no sea igualmente espeluznante. The Tale (2018), de Jennifer Fox, es una película autobiográfica fascinante sobre una documentalista (interpretada maravillosamente por Laura Dern) que se enfrenta a las heridas abiertas del pasado. Cuando ella relee un revelador cuento que escribió cuando tenía 13 años, se niega a creer que fue abusada sexualmente por un adulto en el que confiaba por completo, pero luego comienza a indagar en su pasado y a entrevistar a personas que pasaron por la misma experiencia. Y entiende qué tan profundamente fue manipulada, hasta el punto que pensó que estaba bien tener relaciones sexuales con un adulto más de una década mayor que ella. The Tale es impactante y perturbadora de una manera muy real, no sólo porque se basa en hechos reales sino también porque profundiza en la psicología del abusador y en los mecanismos de defensa de los sobrevivientes del abuso sexual.

Basada en la novela de Stephen King y dirigida por Andy Muschietti, It (2017) es una película de terror que comienza con la desaparición de un niño a manos de una criatura malvada que se parece a un payaso, interpretado por Bill Skarsgård. Un año más tarde, Jaeden Lieberher, el hermano del niño que desapareció, comienza a sentir la presencia de "eso", una entidad indefinida pero muy poderosa que se alimenta de los niños y el miedo. Pronto, el niño y su grupo de amigos (Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, etc.) se enfrentan a sus miedos más profundos. Esta película de terror nos mantiene en suspenso y debo decir que disfruté especialmente la forma en que la siniestra historia de la ciudad está entretejida con la triste y trágica vida de estos niños, que de una manera u otra, son abusados por sus padres.

Batman: Prey - Doug Moench & Paul Gulacy

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Batman mythos is the genesis of his crusade against crime. We all know that Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered in front of an 8-year-old Bruce Wayne, a traumatic event that could never be forgotten or forgiven. But what does it mean, in psychological terms, to survive this kind of tragedy? That is precisely the question that Doug Moench intends to answer in Batman: Prey (published in Legends of the Dark Knight # 11-15, from September 1990 to February 1991).

As seen in Batman: Shaman, the Dark Knight is still establishing himself in Gotham. He has only been seen a few times and still remains in that limbo in which the difference between reality and urban legend is difficult to discern. It’s in this context that Captain James Gordon and psychiatrist Hugo Strange have a heated debate on a TV show. For Gordon, Batman “is actually good for morale. It doesn’t hurt, for some of the men, at least, to know we’re not out there on the street alone”, for Hugo Strange, on the contrary, the Caped Crusader is “obsessed with the night, with darkness. Perhaps obsessed with vengeance”.

Gotham’s mayor asks James Gordon to form a special task force in charge of arresting Batman, and to make things worse, Hugo Strange is appointed as a special consultant. There is an intense and subtle game of power, and thanks to Moench’s remarkable script, every character has a unique voice and a particular strength: Sargeant Max Cort is a fanatic, obsessed with bringing down Batman; Hugo Strange is a deeply disturbed individual whose unhealthy behavior is hidden under the mask of a respectable psychiatrist; Batman is a man who will keep on fighting even if that means he’ll fall in the hands of Cort and Strange; and James Gordon is the voice of reason and temperance, but at the same time is the only man willing to help Batman, even if that might cost him his career in the Gotham City Police Department.

For Batman, James Gordon is the only man who understands why he fights crime as an anonymous vigilante, but at the same time, Strange’s words are so sharp that inflict a deep wound within his psyche. Batman understands how dangerous a renowned psychiatrist like Strange can be: “He’s already turning the public against me… even Gordon is now questioning my motives and methods. And if I lose Gordon… it may all be over”.   

Moench also explores the complicated and often conflictive relationship between Batman and Catwoman, and in Prey, the writer also introduces a new element: Scourge, a third masked vigilante, as tough and as effective as Batman. There is an extraordinary sequence in which Batman has to fight in broad daylight, and he realizes how ineffectual he is out of his element: the night. One of the most haunting moments, however, takes place when Hugo Strange breaks down Bruce Wayne’s emotional barriers, not only mentally but physically. Strange invades Wayne’s manor, overpowers Alfred Pennyworth, and when Batman is weakened and bruised, attacks him mercilessly. In the end, the real battle plays out in Bruce Wayne’s mind, and his resilience is the only thing that (along with Alfred’s help) allows him to deal with his feelings.

Traumatic past / pasado traumático

Every cover and every page of Prey was illustrated by Paul Gulacy, who has always been an impressive artist, and in this 5-issue miniseries, his pencils shine with a unique elegance. Gulacy creates breathtakingly beautiful compositions, balancing light and shadows, with a clarity of line that very few artists are able to achieve. He excels at facial expressions, perspective, and above all, the graceful and delicate movement of his figures. Terry Austin is the extraordinary inker who complements Gulacy’s lines, together, they are the ideal artistic team.

Todos sabemos que Thomas y Martha Wayne fueron asesinados frente a un Bruce Wayne de 8 años, un evento traumático que nunca podría olvidarse o perdonarse. Pero, ¿qué significa, en términos psicológicos, sobrevivir a este tipo de tragedia? Esa es precisamente la pregunta que Doug Moench intenta responder en Batman: Prey (publicado en Legends of the Dark Knight # 11-15, de setiembre de 1990 a febrero de 1991).

James Gordon

Como se ve en Batman: Shaman, el Caballero Oscuro todavía se está abriendo paso en Gotham. Sólo ha sido visto algunas veces y aún permanece en ese limbo en el que la diferencia entre la realidad y la leyenda urbana es difícil de discernir. Es en este contexto que el capitán James Gordon y el psiquiatra Hugo Strange tienen un acalorado debate en un programa de televisión. Para Gordon, Batman “en realidad es bueno para la moral. No perjudica a nadie, y para algunos de los hombres, al menos, es bueno saber que no estamos ahí en la calle solos”, para Hugo Strange, por el contrario, el hombre murciélago está “obsesionado con la noche, la oscuridad. Tal vez obsesionado con la venganza”.

Hugo Strange

El alcalde de Gotham le pide a James Gordon que forme una fuerza especial a cargo de arrestar a Batman, y para empeorar las cosas, Hugo Strange es nombrado asesor especial. Sin embargo, uno de los momentos más inquietantes ocurre cuando Hugo Strange rompe las barreras emocionales de Bruce Wayne, no sólo mental sino físicamente. Al final, la verdadera batalla se desarrolla en la mente de Bruce Wayne, y su capacidad de recuperación es lo único que (junto con la ayuda de Alfred) le permite lidiar con sus sentimientos.

Cada portada y cada página de Prey fue ilustrada por Paul Gulacy, quien siempre ha sido un artista impresionante, y en esta miniserie de 5 números, sus lápices brillan con una elegancia única. Gulacy crea composiciones de una belleza impresionante, equilibrando la luz y las sombras, con una claridad de línea que muy pocos artistas podrían lograr. Gulacy destaca por las expresiones faciales, la perspectiva y, sobre todo, el movimiento elegante y delicado de sus figuras. Terry Austin es el extraordinario entintador que complementa las líneas de Gulacy, juntos, son el equipo artístico ideal.

September comics / Cómics de setiembre

I celebrated my first month here in California by reading a fine selection of comic books! I really enjoyed the first issue of Border Town; Thor and Marvel Two-in-One were pretty good. American Gods and LOEG Tempest were great! And the absolute edition of The Killing Joke is really impressive. However, if I had to choose, my favorite comic of the month would be Batman: Damned # 1, which has quickly become the most DC controversial comic due to some nude scenes involving the Dark Knight (DC decided to censor all future editions and remove every trace of nudity). And without further ado, here are September comics, as per solicitations. 

ABSOLUTE BATMAN THE KILLING JOKE HC 
(A) Alan Moore, Brian Bolland (CA) Brian Bolland. One of the most popular graphic novels of all time, this twisted tale of insanity and perseverance is presented as an Absolute Edition for the first time. Celebré mi primer mes en California leyendo una magnífica selección de cómics. Realmente disfruté con el primer número de Border Town; Thor y Marvel Two-in-One siguen estando bien. American Gods y LOEG Tempest son grandiosos. Y la absolute edition de The Killing Joke es realmente impresionante. Sin embargo, si tuviera que elegir, mi cómic favorito del mes sería Batman: Damned # 1, que se ha convertido rápidamente en el cómic más controversial de DC a causa de algunas escenas de desnudos del Caballero Oscuro (DC decidió censurar las futuras ediciones y eliminar todo rastro de desnudez). Y sin más preámbulos ahí van los cómics de setiembre.

The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson - Eddie Gorodetsky, Marc Andreyko & Stephen Sadowski

Common sense dictates that if you’re a superhero, then victory is always guaranteed. And that’s how it was for Nick Wilson, until one day, without any warning or reason, he lost all his superpowers. As the years went by, Nick was unable to recover from that loss, and he sunk deeper and deeper in a life that had become irrelevant. He has gained weight and he has resorted to smoking marijuana to avoid the ugly reality. This is the initial premise established by Eddie Gorodetsky (writer of TV series like “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men”) and Marc Andreyko (famous for his run on DC’s Manhunter).

The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson is a 5-issue miniseries published between January and May 2018, and from the very beginning, it set out not to impress the reader with superheroic feats but rather with the daily life challenges that Nick Wilson must deal with. He’s no longer super, and now he makes a living by disguising of his old self, and putting up a show in birthday parties for kids. There is nothing glamorous about it, and he barely makes enough to buy weed and pay the rent.

According to David Mandel “Nick Wilson used to change the course of mighty rivers and bend steel with his mighty hands. Now he’s sitting on his couch, getting high in Cleveland. Andreyko and Gorodetsky may have the final word on superheroes, and they do it with one who’s powerless, penniless and so sad, it’s hilarious”. Of course, there’s a reason why the story takes place in Cleveland. Nick Wilson is Superman. Or was Superman. He could fly, he was invulnerable, he had super-strength, super hearing, vision powers, etc. The creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, both grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. In a subtle way, Andreyko pays homage to the men behind the first superhero of them all. 

4: Ian Churchill

Even before reading the solicitation of the first issue, the cover had already caught my attention. Pete Woods takes us inside Nick’a apartment, and we see how colorless, how monotone, his life has become, the only bright thing, the only colorful thing, is his superhero costume, hanging behind him. Nick’s days as a hero are clearly behind him. But what happened with his former adversaries? What happened with his old arch-nemesis? Is the evil genius Clive Morganfeld living a miserable existence just like Nick? On the contrary, Clive has become a wealthy business man and he has enough millions at his disposal to start a bold new project: exploiting the figure of Nick Wilson, the hero, by tapping into the nostalgia of thousands of fans that still remember the golden days. In order to accomplish this, Clive decides to hire his former enemy, Nick. 

Nick Wilson must evaluate the possibilities in front of him. He can keep struggling to make ends meet or he can accept Clive’s offer and finally start making money. But isn’t that like selling his soul to the devil? At the same time, Nick runs into his former high school sweetheart but they’re in a different place now, and they no longer seem to be able to reconnect on a romantic level. She even refuses to go with him to their high school reunion. That is a very interesting chapter, as Nick tries to reconcile who he was and how promising his life seemed to be, with the reality of the present. Clive’s son, who feels maligned by his own father, quickly becomes friends with Nick and ends up hooking up with a quarterback that was still in the closet back in high school. There are many details like this, that could be clumsily handled by other writers, but thanks to Andreyko’s sensibilities all narrative elements are seamlessly integrated in a cohesive whole. 

Nick Wilson

Marc Andreyko has never let me down as a writer, and yet, for some reason, I didn’t have the chance until now to review his work. “I knew it from Manhunter, Torso and Love is Love. Now, Nick Wilson will show you that Marc Andreyko is one of the best writers and most unique voices in comics. This book is earthy and honest”, affirms Brian Michael Bendis, and I completely agree with him. In fact, I bestowed upon Love is Love the coveted Arion’s Achievement Award for best single issue of 2016. 

“Stephen Sadowski’s art is masterfully natural, smooth, and funny”, indeed, Sadowski’s effortlessly sets the mood of the story, but I must also compliment Ian Churchill, not only for his magnificent covers (every month it was quite difficult for me to choose between Woods or Churchill’s covers), but also for his work on issue # 4, in which he illustrates the story using a wide range of styles, proving his versatility and his impressive artistic talent.

“This book really got to me. It pretends to be cynical, but there is a beautiful, beating heart at the center of it”, explains Brad Meltzer, and I agree with him. Every month I was eagerly awaiting the next issue, and I did find that unique flare that I rarely see in more commercial publications. Definitely one of the best miniseries of 2018. I highly recommend it.

The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson es una miniserie de 5 números publicada entre enero y mayo de 2018, y desde el principio la idea no es impresionar al lector con hazañas superheroicas sino con los desafíos de la vida diaria que Nick Wilson debe enfrentar. Ya no es súper, y ahora se gana la vida disfrazándose de su antiguo ‘yo’ y montando un espectáculo en fiestas de cumpleaños para niños. No hay nada de glamoroso en eso, y apenas gana lo suficiente para comprar marihuana y pagar el alquiler.

Según David Mandel, “Nick Wilson solía cambiar el curso de los poderosos ríos y doblar el acero con sus poderosas manos. Ahora está sentado en su sofá, drogado en Cleveland. Andreyko y Gorodetsky pueden tener la última palabra sobre los superhéroes, y lo hacen con alguien que es impotente, sin un centavo y es tan triste que resulta chistoso”. Por supuesto, la historia transcurre en Cleveland por una razón. Nick Wilson es Superman. O fue Superman. Pete Woods nos lleva al apartamento de Nick, y vemos cuán incolora, cuán monótona se ha vuelto su vida, la única cosa brillante, la única cosa colorida, es su disfraz de superhéroe, colgado detrás de él. Los días de Nick como héroe están claramente detrás de él. Pero, ¿qué pasó con sus antiguos adversarios? ¿Qué pasó con su viejo archienemigo? ¿El genio malvado Clive Morganfeld vive una vida miserable como Nick? Por el contrario, Clive se ha convertido en un rico hombre de negocios y tiene suficientes millones a su disposición para comenzar un nuevo proyecto audaz: explotar la figura de Nick Wilson, el héroe, aprovechando la nostalgia de miles de admiradores que todavía recuerdan la época dorada. Nick Wilson debe evaluar las posibilidades. Marc Andreyko nunca me ha decepcionado como escritor, y sin embargo, por alguna razón, no tuve la oportunidad hasta ahora de revisar su trabajo. “Lo sabía desde Manhunter, Torso y Love is Love. Ahora, Nick Wilson demostrará que Marc Andreyko es uno de los mejores escritores y una de las voces más únicas en los cómics. “El arte de Stephen Sadowski es magistralmente natural, fino y divertido”, de hecho, Sadowski establece sin esfuerzo el ambiente de la historia, pero también debo felicitar a Ian Churchill, no sólo por sus magníficas portadas (cada mes era bastante difícil para mí elegir entre las portadas de Woods o Churchill), pero también por su trabajo en el número 4, en el que ilustra la historia utilizando una amplia gama de estilos, demostrando su versatilidad y su impresionante talento artístico.

“Este cómic realmente me atrapó. Pretende ser cínico, pero hay un corazón hermoso y palpitante en el centro”, explica Brad Meltzer, y vaya que eso es cierto. Todos los meses esperaba ansiosamente el próximo número, y encontré esa flama que rara vez veo en publicaciones comerciales. Definitivamente una de las mejores miniseries del 2018. La recomiendo de todas maneras.
