Planetary # 16 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

I think we’re all familiar with martial arts movies. For decades, entire generations of moviegoers have enjoyed the classic fights and the dance-resembling combats between Kung-Fu and/or Karate masters. If in previous issues Warren Ellis had reinterpreted Godzilla movies, pulp novels, B movies from the 50s and countless other elements from pop culture, this time the main plot revolves around the Eastern warrior named Hark.

As we saw on “All Over the World”, Hark along with Doc Brass and other heroes were the equivalent of the Justice League in the 40s. Hark fell in battle protecting mankind, and as was described in “The Good Doctor”, Hark’s daughter took her father’s inventions and created a very profitable company: the Hark Corporation. This dark corporation would later on follow the guidelines of Randall Dowling (leader of the Four), and thus the once honorable name of Hark would get involved in concentration camps and in the slaughter of hundreds of men, as seen in “The Day the Earth Turned Slower”.

“Hark” (published in Planetary # 16, October 2003), is a pivotal point in the Planetary saga for two reasons: first, it marks a hiatus of two years between this and the previous issue (Planetary # 15, from 2001), which was much longer than the usual pause of 3 or 4 months between issues. A high-caliber artist like Cassaday could not, and should not, churn out 22 pages a month; for someone like Cassaday, time is a precious commodity, and the longer he takes to complete a project, the better it looks in the end. As I’ve pointed out in every review, Planetary works so well because of Cassaday’s art. I don’t think any other artist in the American industry could have been better suited for Ellis’ ambitious series.
martial arts movies / películas de artes marciales

The second reason why this is such a meaningful chapter is because the British writer finally confronts us with the Hark legacy. Everything begins with an impressive fighting choreography that reminds us of the fantasy and magical elements in films such as Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and Yimou Zhang's “Curse of the Golden Flower”. The sequence, beautifully illustrated by Cassaday, is an example of graceful movements, dynamism and visual strength.

In the final pages, Elijah Snow, as defiant as ever, shows up in Anna Hark’s office. She explains why she decided to make an alliance with the Four, as she believed they could never be defeated. But now that Snow has recovered his memory and his powers, things are about to change. Anna Hark affirms that she has “managed to give the world things, despite the Four”. And Snow replies harshly “crumbs, from a very rich table”. Once again, Ellis reminds us of the vast knowledge, the groundbreaking technology and the access to unlimited resources that have become an exclusive privilege of the Four. Like an evil version of the Fantastic Four, these quartet of dictators would rather annihilate humankind before sharing their treasures. Finally, with the help of Jim Wilder, Anna Hark promises to support Snow and the Planetary team.

In addition to Cassaday’s brilliant art, colorist Laura Martin (Laura Depuy in earlier issues), helps create a unique atmosphere with a subtle and yet rich color palette. Award-winning letterer Richard Starkings also does an outstanding job. Lettering has always been an important factor in the series, as each cover has a completely different design from the previous one, everything from the logo to the title’s fonts changes from one issue to the next, showing the commitment of this creative team when it comes to producing innovative material without recycling, not even once, any of their former designs.

It sure took me a while but I just finished reading all of my April comics. I must say I’m surprised at how good Uncanny Avengers turned out to be, which is way I’ve already reviewed it. Of course, Young Avengers continues to be my favorite Marvel series, and this third issue was so awesome. This month Secret Service comes to an end with a very peculiar outcome, and Invincible Universe begins, with a first issue that has seduced me faster than many of the superhero books I’ve read recently (plus Nauck's art is top notch). Todd, the Ugliest Kid on Earth concludes this month, and I’ll probably review the entire miniseries, and now Über begins: I enjoyed this opening chapter tremendously. Matt Kindt had already impressed me with the zero issue of Mind MGMT and re-edition of the first issue is just mind-blowing, this is easily one of the best series of 2012. But not everything is about happy endings (or beginnings), because as of April 2013 Hack / Slash is officially dead. After almost 9 years, this thrilling series about slasher films, homicidals and supernatural gore is now done. I feel very sad to see it go... First Hellblazer, and now Hack / Slash. Damn, talk about crisis in the comic book industry… Anyway, without further ado here are April comics as per solicitations:

_______________________________________________________________________

FASHION BEAST #8 WRAP CVR (MR)

HACK SLASH #25 CVR B FRISON (MR)

MIND MGMT #1 1 FOR 1

MORNING GLORIES #25 (MR)
Es el final de la primera temporada.

SECRET SERVICE #6 (OF 6) (MR)

TODD, THE UGLIEST KID ON EARTH #4 (of 4)

THE WALKING DEAD #109

WITCH DOCTOR MALPRACTICE #5 (OF 6)

WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #27.1AU

Urban Legend Comic by Arcadio Bolaños

It’s often said that a myth is a special form of narrative, myths are tales about the time before time, or rather the time before human beings existed. Of course, myths can also be a form of narrative that validates certain structures. We can have foundational myths, religious myths, etc. Here, a great array of writers and artists decided to come up with their own interpretation of the word ‘myth’.
Kell Smith

I’d like to start with “Happy Endings” written by Matt O’Keefe and illustrated by Christopher Chamberlain. Despite the presence of a fair princess and a dragon, this story feels very real. A 19-year old boy has to make a decision. Will he risk his life like so many other youngsters to kill the dragon and thus gain the princess’s hand? Or will he start thinking about the consequences? I really liked the idea of a mundane life in a fantastic setting, and Chamberlain’s pages look just lovely. Talking about underage boys, high school student Aaron Beepat took the chance of having me illustrate his story “Unknown Savior”. When I read his script I knew it would be something that I’d enjoy doing, and I think my art here look better than in previous volumes.

Slewo Oshana and James Roberts prove to be a very good creative team. I really liked the idea of three teenage boys stoically resisting the heat in a sunny day while waiting for someone. One of the kids is waiting for his admired older brother and the other two are waiting to see him too. This older brother seems to have acquired an almost mythical status within the teenagers’ minds. As usual, James Roberts does a great job, he’s the kind of artist that we should keep around no matter what. When I read Ray Goldfield’s story in the first volume I understood that his head was populated by funny stories and youthful heroes, and so with “Partners” we get another peek at Ray’s amazing world; I think Kent Holle is the ideal artistic partner for this project, and I really enjoyed his rendering of an Asian girl and his overprotective dragon. I think these two guys could create an entire universe of characters like these and I’d sure like to see more from them.
Christopher Chamberlain & James Roberts

Sometimes I have the feeling that Gary Hogan and Blake Sims are ubiquitous. But you know what? That’s good, because I could never get tired of them. “Replacing Big Foot” is a good example of their virtues. I literally laughed out loud while reading this imaginative story about Big Foot, who decides to retire and live off the merchandising/licensing based on him, while another monster replaces him. And then we have “The Confession of Jonas Salinger” written by Jason Snyder, with pencils and inks by Michael Sumislaski. These are four powerful pages about a bleak future, this is the only myth in the book that seems to look forward while delving into the misery of humanity. The writing is intense and the art top notch.

And at last, but certainly not least, we have the cover. I can’t praise enough Kell Smith’s cover. She is one of the most talented illustrators we’ve found and in my opinion she should become the regular cover artist. The suggestive image of a boy standing in front of the sword Excalibur is poetic and beautiful. The art and the colors are beyond awesome. I really, REALLY want to see more covers by Kell.
_____________________________________________

Another Horror Comic by Arcadio Bolaños

Vol. 8
This second horror issue has been the most successful so far. In fact, it actually sold out in New York Comic Con (October 2011), probalby all thanks to Sterling Gates. Gates is famous for his work in titles like Supergirl, Kid Flash and more recently Hawk and Dove for DC Comics. He wrote for us The Mistress a very interesting story about an unfaithful woman and a man obsessed with hunting wild animals; these pages have a level of female nudity that you wouldn’t see on a regular DC title. Cassandra James, a very talented artist, depicts a very sexy femme fatale, and gives us enough details to know exactly what’s going on in the woman’s house.

Evan Valentine returns with the artist Sam Tung, and they build upon the premises of their first, foundational, tale. Life in hell it's not all it's cracked up to be… especially if you are a low level demon bored with a lousy daily routine. When this demon suddenly finds an exceptional human soul he decides to leave hell and visit Earth for the first time.

The Station, written by Glenn Matchett is probably my favorite this time. Glenn worked last time with Brent Peeples (currently working for Image Comics) but this time he has another extraordinary artist, David Aspmo who, I’m sure, will be working professionally quite soon; when I saw his pages 4 months ago I couldn’t wait to read this story, hopefully he’ll be back before he becomes famous (make it so, Glenn!). The Station reminds me a bit of Ridley Scott’s Alien, but it also has a nice sci-fi feeling that makes me think of classic British publications like 2000AD (for instance, THE POSSESSED by Peter Milligan). When the captain of a spaceship and his crew visit a seemingly abandoned space station to investigate some strange disappearances they start dying one by one… what kind of evil force lurks within the shadows of this floating graveyard? In 5 pages Glenn creates suspense and lots of scary moments. This is the kind of horror stories I want to read!
interior pages

Ye of Little Faith, was written by Douglas Hahner and illustrated by me. About that, Glenn Matchett wrote this: “Arcadio's art is more minimalist in this story but I think it adds to the solitude of the two main characters and is an effective way to tell the story”. I feel very proud of my 4 page story, titled Threnos with art by the talented Irapuan Luiz. Since it’d be kind of tacky to review my own story I’ll leave it to Mr. Matchett: “The story is a creepy event following a really gruesome car accident. It's very well told in its completion and gives horror a very human and all too familiar face. In this story Arcadio shows that not only is he a good artist but he knows how to tell a great story. The art is really good and Arcadio seems to be bagging a lot of talented artist, I'm hoping to see more of this guy in future volumes”. What can I say?, only British guys understand my work! Nah, just kidding, everyone loves me.

And at last, but certainly not least, we have Travis M. Holyfield (and penciler / inker Chris Page). In this issue we have zombies, vampires, werewolves, demons, etc. But Travis gives us a very original horror story. Told from the perspective of a child’s toy, this is a story about primal fears and constant confrontations with  dark and destructive creatures. As an immobile toy that can only see the daylight under special circumstances, we can appreciate vulnerability and fragility under a whole new light. Jack, Unblinking deserves all the accolades it’ll surely get. I really enjoyed it.

This is one of the best horror anthologies you could possibly ask for (besides, Amanda Rachels’ cover is just awesome). There are several other good stories here which I’ll try to review later on, but like I’ve said before, it doesn’t matter what kind of horror subgenre you are into, you’re bound to find something you’ll like here. I promise.

my sketch / mi boceto

my final version / mi versión final

Vol. 6

Exclusive preview

July is almost over. Good, because in August another one of my stories will be printed and officially released. This time, instead of two pages I have four, which means not only double the fun but also double the horror. A most talented Brazilian artist, Irapuan Luiz, has illustrated my script, and professional letterer Michelle Fiorucci has helped me too. It’s exciting to have a creative team for the first time in my life.
Claudio Gallina

And now, I’ll give you an exclusive preview of three pages from "The Fracture of the Universal Boy" by prestigious artist Michael Zulli.
Michael Zulli

And, at last but not least, I offer you the preliminary versions of the second page that I did for Douglas Hahner, which will be released soon.
The Fracture of the Universal Boy

___________________________________________________

Michael Zulli
