Marvel #5 - Alex Ross, Gene Ha, Adam Hugues et al

Exactly a year ago I started reviewing Marvel, an anthology series in which so many talented creators have participated. Here, as in previous issues, the opening pages are by Alex Ross and Steve Darnall. Nightmare has defeated Doctor Strange and has acquired so much power that he can now defy invincible cosmic entities such as the Supreme Tribunal and Eternity. Alex Ross’ art is absolutely beautiful, his interior pages are a joy to behold, and so is his cover, a vibrant composition in which many of Marvel’s heroes are descending from the skies.

Although previous issues had a combination of established artists with newcomers, this one is 100% pure talent. Every single artist in this issue is of legendary status in the comic book industry: Gene Ha, especially thanks to his collaboration with Alan Moore in Top Ten: The Forty-Niners. After that we have Adam Hugues, who is perhaps more famous for his covers but who also happens to be amazing doing interior art. And finally Lucio Parrillo, who hasn’t collaborated much for Marvel in the past which makes this a special occasion.

“A Day In The Mystical Life” (April 2021) revolves around the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, before his confrontation with Nightmare. One of my favorite artists, Gene Ha, writes and pencils this story, longtime collaborator Zander Cannon inks it. I absolutely enjoyed this day in the mystical life of Doctor Strange, who happens to be in Milwaukee, of all places, with the rest of the Avengers, while his loyal Wong, in New York, must help Strange in a very unexpected way. Great story and great art!

Gene Ha

Adam Hughes writes, illustrates and colors “The Best of Us”, a very special story about WWII and Captain America. Although Hughes is incredibly famous as an artist, this is one of the rare opportunities in which we get to see how talented he is as a writer. In a short but captivating tale, Hughes talks about the war and the aftermath of a conflict that changed the history of the world. In the process, we get too see many familiar faces such as Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan from SHIELD, but also Bucky, Cap’s sidekick. 

Gene Ha

It’s especially interesting to see a lonely Nick Fury getting drunk while reminiscing the pivotal moments of the war and the participation of the Sentinel of Liberty. When the world thought Captain America and Bucky had died, what was the reaction of those closest to them? This is a unique insight into the mind of character that has always been secretive and hermetic, as he should be giving his role as a top spy, and I must say the ending was particularly inspiring.

At last but not least, we have “Wolverine” written by Mark Waid with art by Lucio Parrillo, another magnificent illustrator who applies photorealism to action-packed compositions, creating very strong a vibrant results. This story connects to Wolverine’s first appearance, when he fights against the Hulk. Unbeknownst by the mutant with adamantium claws, the fight is being observed by Professor X and Cyclops who have very different opinions about whether Wolverine would be a suitable candidate for the X-Men or not.

Hace exactamente un año comencé a reseñar Marvel, una serie antológica en la que han participado muchos creadores talentosos. Aquí, como en números anteriores, las primeras páginas son de Alex Ross y Steve Darnall. Nightmare ha derrotado al Doctor Strange y ha adquirido tanto poder que ahora puede desafiar a entidades cósmicas invencibles como el Tribunal Supremo y Eternidad. El arte de Alex Ross es absolutamente hermoso, sus páginas interiores son un placer para la vista, al igual que su portada, una composición vibrante en la que muchos de los héroes de Marvel descienden de los cielos.

Aunque los números anteriores tenían una combinación de artistas establecidos con recién llegados, este número es 100% puro talento. Aquí todos los artistas tienen un estatus legendario en la industria del cómic: Gene Ha, famoso gracias a su colaboración con Alan Moore en Top Ten: The Forty-Niners. Después de eso tenemos a Adam Hugues, que es quizás más famoso por sus portadas pero que también es increíble haciendo arte en las páginas interiores. “Un día en la vida mística” (abril de 2021) gira en torno al Hechicero Supremo, Doctor Strange, antes de su enfrentamiento con Nightmare. Uno de mis artistas favoritos, Gene Ha, escribe y dibuja a lápiz esta historia, el colaborador habitual Zander Cannon la entinta. Disfruté muchísimo este día en la vida mística del Doctor Strange, quien casualmente está en Milwaukee, de todos los lugares, con el resto de los Vengadores, mientras que su leal Wong, en New York, debe ayudar a Strange de una manera muy inesperada. Gran historia y gran arte!

Adam Hughes escribe, ilustra y colorea “Lo mejor de nosotros”, una historia muy especial sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el Capitán América. Aunque Hughes es increíblemente famoso como artista, esta es una de las raras oportunidades en las que podemos ver su talento como escritor. En una historia breve pero cautivadora, Hughes habla sobre la guerra y las consecuencias de un conflicto que cambió la historia del mundo. En el proceso, también vemos muchas caras conocidas, como Nick Fury y Dum Dum Dugan de SHIELD, pero también está Bucky, el ayudante juvenil del Capi.

Es especialmente interesante ver a un Nick Fury solitario emborrachándose mientras recuerda los momentos cruciales de la guerra y la participación del Centinela de la Libertad. Cuando el mundo pensó que el Capitán América y Bucky habían muerto, ¿cuál fue la reacción de los más cercanos a ellos? Esta es una mirada única a la mente de un personaje que siempre ha sido reservado y hermético, como corresponde a su papel como espía, y debo decir que el final fue particularmente inspirador.

Por último, pero no menos importante, tenemos "Wolverine" escrito por Mark Waid y con arte de Lucio Parrillo, otro ilustrador magnífico que aplica el fotorrealismo a composiciones llenas de acción, creando resultados muy sólidos y vibrantes. Esta historia se conecta con la primera aparición de Wolverine, cuando lucha contra Hulk. Si que el mutante de las garras de adamantium lo sepa, la pelea está siendo observada por el Profesor X y Cíclope, quienes tienen opiniones muy diferentes sobre si Wolverine sería un candidato adecuado para los X-Men o no.

Being a superhero means to have a secret life, to conceal your true identity, to lie to the people closest to you. In many ways, a superhero experiences the hardships of all closeted gays. And that’s what Allan Heinberg reminds us in “Secret Identities”, a two-part story that begins in Young Avengers # 7. There, Billy Kaplan tries to tell the truth to his parents, that he is a superhero, except that before he can finish his sentence his mom and dad automatically assume that he’s coming out, that he’s finally admitting that he’s gay and that he has an intimate relationship with Teddy Altman. And they congratulate him for being courageous enough to be honest.

Allan’s great sense of humor is also a fundamental aspect in these stories, from running jokes between the boys to some rather clever word games, such as Billy Kaplan’s original codename. In the first six issues he was known as “Asgardian” but many fans laughed about this homosexual superhero whose name strangely resembled that of “Ass Guardian”. In a hilarious dialogue in the pages of Young Avengers, Billy decides it might not be a bad idea to change his codename from Asgardian to Wiccan.

In subsequent issues we will see new additions to the team such as a new version of The Vision and Tommy Shepherd (AKA Speed), a superfast teenager with white hair which reminds us of Quicksilver, Magneto’s son. If Tommy is Billy’s brother, does it mean they are the lost twins of Wanda Maximoff? After all, Tommy’s likeness to Quicksilver and Billy’s similarity to the Scarlet Witch seem to back up that hypothesis.

Jim Cheung once again showed all his abilities as an artist, drawing some unforgettable pages. Although his output in the 90s wasn’t too notable, his current work is so magnificent that he has quickly turned into one of my favorite pencilers. I love his style so much that I could even buy a comic book just because he’s penciling it, and that’s a rare privilege that I concede only to the finest artists of the comic book industry. At last, but certainly not least, I’d like to emphasize the high level of visual creativity in Jim’s work, especially in his covers, which capture the essence of today’s heroic figures with the thrill of yesteryear’s champions.

One of my favorite issues is the Young Avengers Special, which features the work of some the most sought-after artists of the industry (Michael Gaydos, Jae Lee, Neal Adams, Bill Sienkiewicz, Gene Ha & Pasqual Ferry). Here we get to know more about the past of these teenaged heroes. Patriot (Elijah Bradley) is the grandson of the first Captain America. Before Steve Rogers became America’s greatest hero, the super-soldier serum was first tested on a battalion of African-American soldiers, and everyone died, except for Isaiah Bradley. After all, in an era still dominated by racism, risking the lives of black people wouldn’t have been so objectionable… Isaiah Bradley is quickly put aside to make way for the golden boy, Steve Rogers.  

Cassie Lang and Katie Bishop share a rather turbulent and traumatic past, but arguably the most fascinating secret origins belong to Billy and Teddy. As a shape-shifter, Teddy Altman had tried to do everything he could to fit in, but it doesn’t matter how many times you can change your appearance, if you don’t accept yourself you can’t expect others to do so. Depicting Teddy in the locker room, nervously admiring the semi-naked bodies of other young boys, is a stroke of genius on behalf of Allan Heinberg and brilliant artist Gene Ha. Gene Ha along with Art Lyon create some of the most beautiful pages we could possibly imagine, that go from the intimate moment of confession in the boys locker room to the vibrant and very vivid battle scene in New York.

At the same time, we see Billy Kaplan as a rather shy boy, trying to survive the constant attacks of the school’s bullies. After being beaten down, he runs into the Scarlet Witch, who in a very maternal way explains to him the importance of standing up. Billy knows he’s different from other boys, but instead of embracing his sexual orientation he has chosen to hide it. Here Jae Lee provides some truly wonderful art, showing us a very vulnerable and fragile Billy, in Jae’s hands, Billy is represented just like a gay kid, slightly effeminate at times, and very different from his identity as Wiccan. 

Am I talking too much about Billy and Teddy? Not necessarily, at least, not as much as readers (gay and straight) did back then. In the first letters column of Young Avengers, a discussion about the sexuality of Asgardian / Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) and Hulkling (Teddy Altman) begun. Many readers wrote about this, some were concerned about the notion of having a homosexual couple in the book, especially since they were underage boys. Others, however, were enthusiastic about this initiative. Why were readers so concerned about homosexual teenagers? The conservative viewpoint of some suggested that portraying a young homosexual couple in the book would set a terrible example. Much like reverend Lovejoy’s wife (from “The Simpsons”), the hysterical tone of “won’t somebody please think of the children?” could be heard in the voice of the conservative readers. However, none of them understood that Heinberg was, in fact, thinking of the children. And luckily this became evident for the majority of Marvel’s fandom who expressed their support towards Young Avengers.

Some of the gay readers shared their most intimate experiences regarding comic books and what effect they have on its audience. Many were grateful for seeing Billy and Teddy together, and many said that if they had seen gay teenagers in comic books when they were growing up that would have helped to make them feel more accepted. Just to see a gay couple being accepted, even within the world of fiction, can help gay teenagers accept themselves in real life. Sometimes that can be the difference between life or death, between a gay boy accepting himself -even if society is not yet ready to accept him- or deciding to give up and to commit suicide. Which is why, in many ways, I consider Allan Heinberg has accomplished a victory of historical proportions. After half a century of censorship, Marvel was brave enough to show us that which had always been forbidden: a romantic relationship between two boys. And Allan did it in such a fascinating way that all readers, no matter what their genre or sexual orientation was, felt identified with the inner conflicts of Hulkling and Wiccan.

Bodies can change / los cuerpos pueden cambiar

Ser un súper-héroe significa tener una vida secreta, ocultar tu verdadera identidad, mentir a las personas más cercanas a ti. En más de una manera, un súper-héroe experimenta las dificultades de todos los gays que están 'en el closet'. Y eso es lo que Allan Heinberg nos recuerda en “Identidades secretas”, una historia de dos partes que empieza en Young Avengers # 7. Allí Billy Kaplan intenta decirle la verdad a sus padres, es decir, que él es un súper-héroe, excepto que antes de poder terminar una sola frase, su mamá y su papá asumen automáticamente que él está 'saliendo del closet', que está admitiendo por fin que es gay y que tiene una relación íntima con Teddy Altman. Y lo felicitan por tener la valentía de ser honesto.

El gran sentido del humor de Allan es también un aspecto fundamental de estas historias, desde las bromas persistentes entre los chicos hasta algunos astutos juegos de palabras, por ejemplo, el alias original de Billy Kaplan. En los primeros seis números él fue presentado como “Asgardian” pero muchos fans se rieron de este súper-héroe homosexual cuyo nombre sonaba demasiado parecido a "Guardián del culo" (“Ass Guardian” en inglés se pronuncia casi igual que “Asgardian”). En un hilarante diálogo en las páginas de Young Avengers, Billy decide que no sería una mala idea cambiar su nombre de Asgardian a Wiccan.

En números subsiguientes veremos a los nuevos integrantes del equipo, por ejemplo, una nueva versión de The Vision y Tommy Shepherd (Speed), un adolescente súper rápido de pelo blanco que nos recuerda a Quicksilver, el hijo de Magneto. Si Tommy es el hermano de Billy, ¿eso significa que ellos son los gemelos perdidos de Wanda Maximoff? Después de todo, la semejanza de Tommy con Quicksilver y la similitud de Billy con Scarlet Witch respaldarían esta hipótesis.

Jim Cheung una vez más muestra todas sus habilidades como artista, dibujando páginas inolvidables. Aunque en los 90 su producción fue poco notable, su trabajo actual es tan magnífico que se ha convertido con rapidez en uno de mis dibujantes favoritos. Me gusta tanto su estilo que podría comprar un cómic sólo por ver sus ilustraciones, y ese es un raro privilegio que concedo sólo a los mejores artistas de la industria del cómic. Por último, me gustaría enfatizar el alto nivel de creatividad visual de Jim, especialmente sus portadas, que capturan la esencia de las figuras heroicas de hoy así como el frenesí de los campeones de antaño.

Uno de mis números favoritos es el Especial Young Avengers que reúne el trabajo de algunos de los artistas más cotizados de la industria (Michael Gaydos, Jae Lee, Neal Adams, Bill Sienkiewicz, Gene Ha y Pasqual Ferry). Aquí descubrimos el pasado de estos héroes adolescentes. Patriot (Elijah Bradley), es el nieto del primer Capitán América. Cassie Lang y Katie Bishop comparten un pasado turbulento y traumático, pero opino que los mejores orígenes secretos pertenecen a Billy y Teddy. Como cambia-formas Teddy Altman había intentado de todo para encajar, pero no importa cuántas veces cambies tu apariencia, si no te aceptas a ti mismo no puedes esperar que otros sí lo hagan. Retratar a Teddy en los vestuarios, admirando nerviosamente los cuerpos desnudos de otros jovencitos es un toque de genialidad de parte de Allan Heinberg y el brillante artista Gene Ha. Gene Ha junto con Art Lyon crean algunas de las páginas más bellas que podamos imaginar, que abarcan el momento íntimo de la confesión en el vestuario de los chicos y la vibrante y vívida escena de batalla en New York.

Al mismo tiempo, vemos a Billy Kaplan como un chiquillo bastante tímido que intenta sobrevivir los constantes ataques de los abusivos del colegio. Luego de ser golpeado, se encuentra con Scarlet Witch, quien de una manera muy maternal le explica la importancia de defenderse. Billy sabe que es distinto a otros chicos, pero en lugar de asumir su orientación sexual ha elegido ocultarla. Aquí Jae Lee suministra un arte maravilloso, que nos muestra a un muy vulnerable y frágil Billy, Jae nos presenta a Billy como un típico chico gay, ligeramente afeminado por momentos, y muy diferente a su identidad como Wiccan.

¿Estoy hablando demasiado sobre Billy y Teddy? No lo creo, al menos, no tanto como lo hicieron los lectores (gays y heterosexuales) hace unos años. En la primera columna de cartas de Young Avengers, empezó una discusión sobre la sexualidad de Asgardian / Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) y Hulkling (Teddy Altman). Muchos lectores escribieron sobre esto, algunos estaban preocupados sobre la noción de tener a una pareja homosexual en la colección, más aún si se trataba de dos menores de edad. Otros, sin embargo, fueron entusiastas de esta iniciativa. ¿Por qué a los lectores les preocupaba tanto el tema de la homosexualidad en la adolescencia? El punto de vista conservador de algunos sugería que retratar una juvenil pareja homosexual en la serie sentaría un terrible ejemplo. Al igual que con la esposa del reverendo Alegría (de "Los Simpson"), el tono histérico de "que alguien piense en los niños" podía oírse en la voz de estos lectores conservadores. Algunos de los lectores gay compartieron sus experiencias más íntimas en relación a los cómics y a los efectos que pueden generar en la audiencia. Muchos estaban agradecidos por ver juntos a Billy y Teddy, y muchos afirmaron que si hubiesen visto a adolescentes gay en los cómics que leían cuando estaban creciendo esto los habría ayudado a sentirse más aceptados. Sólo el hecho de ver a una pareja gay siendo aceptada, incluso dentro del mundo de la ficción, puede ayudar a los adolescentes gay a aceptarse a sí mismos en la vida real. A veces esa puede ser la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte, entre un chico gay que se acepta a sí mismo -incluso si la sociedad aún no está lista para aceptarlo- o que decide rendirse y suicidarse. Y es por ello que, en más de una manera, considero que Allan Heinberg ha logrado una victoria de proporciones históricas. Después de medio siglo de censura, Marvel tuvo la valentía de mostrarnos aquello que siempre había estado prohibido: una relación romántica entre dos jovencitos. Y Allan lo hizo de una manera tan fascinante que todos los lectores, sin importar cuál fuese su género u orientación sexual, se sintieron identificados con los conflictos internos de Hulkling y Wiccan.

Top 10: The Forty-Niners - Moore & Ha

With each passing day, more and more uncanny creatures gain access into the city. The citizens are seriously concerned. What can a small police force do against the uprising levels of super-criminality? Many ask for military intervention, and all the war heroes agree with that suggestion. The Skysharks, for instance, propose themselves as the new peacekeeper force.

At the same time, Steve and Wulf share a significant moment. In two beautifully designed pages, Gene Ha redefines the nature of the two men’s relationship. In the first two frames, Gene emphasizes Steve’s loneliness which is subtly contrasted by a flower in the floor. Then Steve watches Wulf, and as he talks to his friend, a silent panel is enough to give us the idea of time taking place right there, between the two of them. Gene Ha’s artistic skills include his almost insane obsession for detail, which is why he was the perfect artist for Top Ten. We can see the tool Wulf is using, we can see him cleaning his hands; and as Steve nervously touches a hammer and then leaves it on the table, we understand how embarrassed the teenager feels.

The next page is all about revelations: Wulf comes out to Steve. Certainly, seeing gays as a group is now taken for granted, but in the 40s no man would have dared to ascribe himself to the homosexual community. In fact, not too long ago, homosexuality wasn’t seen as a function of heredity or of upbringing. It was simply seen as an action, something men or women did. And that’s why so many psychiatrists used to think that homosexuality could be ‘cured’, because if it wasn’t a fundamental trait of the individual then it was just a bad habit that people could get rid off.

Steve cannot believe Wulf’s words. It’s hard for the inexperienced youngster to accept that this man, this legendary hero, could not only engage in forbidden sexual intercourse, but also define himself as queer. Let’s remember that in the 19th century, the "perverse" became a group, instead of an attribute. Sexuality was seen as the core of peoples' identity. Homosexual relations had been seen as a sin that could be committed from time to time, but now a group of "homosexuals" had emerged. And this would obviously defy the heterosexual norm, something that no city or country could forgive. This legacy still weighs heavily upon Steve’s shoulders, even in a city of wonders, same-gender love is unacceptable. The most lyric scene takes place here, as Steve is alone again and staring down, looking at a fragile flower breaking its way amidst a sea of concrete and artificial constructions (the best metaphor of the ability of love to flourish everywhere, even under the most inhospitable circumstances). Steve must accept himself, and that will be his hardest mission ever.

A quiet moment of revelation / Un momento tranquilo de revelación

But Neopolis is no sleepy town, and so Leni and her police partner find themselves immersed in the most dangerous mission ever. When the United States government granted asylum to Nazi scientists, they did so on the basis that the scientific work of these brilliant minds would be translated into a new era of prosperity. But what nobody knew is that instead of developing new energy sources, the Nazis had been building a time machine. The plan is obvious: one of the Nazis will travel back in time to provide the Fuhrer with the necessary technology to build the atomic bomb before the Americans, thus changing the curse of history and ensuring the survival of the Reich. Thanks to Leni’s resourcefulness, this threat is avoided. Nonetheless, a group of vengeful vampires is about to lay siege on Neopolis, starting with the train station. With barely enough time to react, the entire police force –merely a dozen of superpowered beings- staunchly defend the very people that had demanded a military intervention.

The major doesn’t support the police force, nor does the public. No one can believe that a group of men will survive against an horde of vampires. In a battle of epic proportions, Neopolis police officers do their best against seemingly unbeatable odds. It’s only the timely intervention of the Maiden, who blesses the water reservoir of the city, which gives them the upper-hand. But the vampire attack had been devised in conjunction with the Skysharks plans. Indeed, these aviators shoot down Wulf and take to the skies to bombard specific zones of Neopolis. But they forget that not too long ago Steve was Jetlad, the youngest pilot of the US Air Force. It’s now up to him to stop these men from bombing entire neighborhoods.

Once the battle is over, Steve and Wulf are recovering from their wounds. Wulf has doubts about his relationship with Steve, after all, he’s only a kid. But Steve Traynor has learned a lot since the beginning of the series. Sexuality is no longer the ticklish matter it once was. Thomas Laqueur explored the different ways that science has determined our understanding of bodily sexuality since the ancient Greeks. From a time of acceptance and tolerance we entered into a more oppressive era. "Sex" therefore is unveiled not only as an artificial norm but also a norm that is subject to change. And as the couple stares out of the window all they can see is change. Change in the myriad of forms that run through the streets, or fly through the skies, change in the futuristic landscape that is already visible in the horizon. There’s change in the air alright, and for the first time in their lives, they’ve found a place in which all artificial norms pertaining sexuality can be modified. Neopolis finally welcomes them.

Gene Ha has always been a tremendously talented artist, but in the Forty-Niners graphic novel he reaches a level of virtuousness that only a handful of artist could aspire to. Every page is a work of art, and some pages are masterpieces that could easily surpass the work of most contemporary illustrators. Unlike Top Ten, this project has a nice classic noir feel, that’s why Art Lyon’s washed colors effect fit in so nicely. Besides, Gene’s extraordinary sequencing, I’d like to highlight the design and anatomy of the characters as well as the outlandish but very discernible details that populate each page and frame. Moore and Ha have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of comic books from all eras and publishers, that’s why the citizens of Neopolis are clever homages to well-known superheroes or other famous fictitious creations. This is a comic book that has to be savored calmly, taking a couple of minutes to look at each page and to find all the jokes, identifying all the parodies, the homages; it doesn’t matter how many comic books you’ve read, sooner or later you’ll recognize something (For more reference about the drawings check this link). This is truly an unforgettable masterwork that will redefine your love for the ninth art.

Cada día que pasa, hay más y más criaturas extrañas en la ciudad. Los ciudadanos están seriamente preocupados. ¿Qué puede hacer una reducida fuerza policial en contra de los altos índices de súper-criminalidad? Muchos exigen la intervención militar, y todos los héroes de guerra están de acuerdo. Los Skysharks, por ejemplo, se proponen como los nuevos defensores del orden.

Al mismo tiempo, Steve y Wulf comparten un momento trascendental. En dos páginas bellamente diseñadas, Gene Ha redefine la naturaleza de la relación entre los dos hombres. En las primeras dos viñetas, Gene enfatiza la soledad de Steve que es sutilmente contrastada por una flor en el suelo. Luego, Steve mira a Wulf, y cuando le habla, un panel silencioso es suficiente para darnos la sensación de que el tiempo está transcurriendo. Las habilidades artísticas de Gene Ha incluyen su obsesión casi neurótica por los detalles. Podemos ver la herramienta que Wulf está usando, podemos ver cómo se limpia las manos; vemos a Steve sujetando nerviosamente un martillo y luego soltándolo, y entendemos qué tan avergonzado se siente este adolescente.

En la siguiente página están las revelaciones: Wulf 'sale del closet'. Ciertamente, ver a los gays como un grupo es algo frecuente en la actualidad, pero en los años 40 ningún hombre se hubiese atrevido a identificarse como parte de la comunidad homosexual. De hecho, en el pasado, la homosexualidad no era vista como una función hereditaria o de crianza. Era simplemente vista como una acción, algo que los hombres y mujeres hacían. Y es por ello que muchos psiquiatras solían pensar que la homosexualidad se podía 'curar', porque si no era un rasgo fundamental del individuo entonces era sólo un mal hábito del que la gente podía deshacerse.

Steve no puede creer las palabras de Wulf. Es difícil para el inexperimentado jovencito aceptar que este hombre, este héroe legendario puede no solamente practicar actos sexuales prohibidos sino definirse a sí mismo como marica. Recordemos que en el siglo XIX, lo 'perverso' se convirtió en un grupo, en vez de un atributo. La sexualidad era vista como el núcleo de la identidad de la gente. Las relaciones homosexuales habían sido vistas como un pecado que podía cometerse de vez en cuando, pero ahora un grupo de 'homosexuales' había emergido. Y ello obviamente desafiaría la normativa heterosexual, algo que ninguna ciudad o país podría perdonar. Este legado aún pesa sobre los hombros de Steve porque, incluso en la ciudad de las maravillas, el amor entre sujetos del mismo sexo es inaceptable. La escena más lírica ocurre aquí, cuando Steve está solo nuevamente y mira hacia abajo, y ve una frágil flor abriéndose paso entre el concreto y las construcciones artificiales (la mejor metáfora de la habilidad del amor de florecer en cualquier lugar, incluso bajo las circunstancias más inhóspitas). Steve debe aceptarse a sí mismo, y esa será la misión más difícil.

Pero Neopolis no es una ciudad tranquila, y así Leni y su compañero se encuentran inmersos en la más peligrosa misión. Cuando el gobierno de Estados Unidos les ofreció asilo a los científicos nazis, se esperaba que el trabajo científico de estas brillantes mentes fuera el inicio de una nueva era de prosperidad. Pero lo que nadie sabía es que en vez de crear nuevas fuentes de energía, los nazis han estado construyendo una máquina del tiempo. El plan es obvio: uno de los nazis viajará en el tiempo para proporcionarle al Fuhrer la tecnología necesaria para construir una bomba atómica antes que los norteamericanos, cambiando así el curso de la historia y asegurando la sobrevivencia del Reich. Gracias a los recursos de Leni, esta amenaza es evitada. No obstante, un grupo de vengativos vampiros está apunto de atacar Neopolis, empezando por la estación de trenes. Con muy poco tiempo para reaccionar, toda la fuerza policial -a penas una docena de seres súper poderosos- defiendan a la misma gente que demanda una intervención militar.

El alcalde no apoya a los policías, y tampoco el público. Nadie puede creer que un grupo de hombres sobrevivirá a la horda de vampiros. En una batalla de proporciones épicas, los oficiales de Neopolis hacen todo lo posible. Y se salvan sólo gracias a la oportuna intervención de la Doncella, que bendice la reserva de agua de la ciudad. No obstante, el ataque de los vampiros había sido planeado junto con los planes de los Skysharks. De hecho, estos aviadores le disparan a Wulf y empiezan a bombardear diversas zonas de Neopolis. Pero olvidan que no hace mucho Steve era Jetlad, el piloto más joven de la fuerza área de Estados Unidos. Ahora depende de él detener el bombardeo.

Al final de la batalla, Steve y Wulf se recuperan de sus heridas. Wulf tiene dudas sobre su relación con Steve, después de todo, él es sólo un chiquillo. Pero Steve Traynor ha madurado. La sexualidad ya no es más un asunto espinoso... Thomas Laqueur exploró las diferentes formas en las que la ciencia ha determinado nuestra comprensión de la sexualidad corporal desde los antiguos griegos. De una época de aceptación y tolerancia entramos a una era opresiva. El "sexo", por tanto, es revelado no sólo como una norma artificial sino como una norma sujeta al cambio. Y mientras la pareja mira por la ventana, todo lo que se puede ver es el cambio. Gene Ha siempre ha sido un artista tremendamente talentoso, pero en la novela gráfica "Forty-Niners" alcanza un nivel de virtuosismo al que sólo un puñado de artistas podría aspirar. Cada página es una obra de arte, y algunas páginas son obras maestras que podrían superar fácilmente el trabajo de muchos ilustradores contemporáneos. A diferencia de "Top Ten", este proyecto tiene un enfoque clásico que es realzado con los colores estilo acuarela de Art Lyon. Además de las extraordinarias secuencias de Gene, me gustaría resaltar el diseño y la anatomía de los personajes, así como los detalles tan discernibles y excéntricos que pueblan cada viñeta. Moore y Ha tienen un conocimiento casi enciclopédico de cómics de todas las eras y todas las editoriales, es por ello que los ciudadanos de Neopolis son homenajes inteligentes a súper-héroes bien conocidos o a otras creaciones de ficción. Top 10: The Forty-Niners - Alan Moore & Gene Ha

A boy, a man and a woman must find their place in a new and strange city at the end of World War II. It’s 1949, and America is still wounded, appraising possible solutions whilst rebuilding itself. Everything feels new to them, but at the same time the horror of war and other memories are still fresh.

In fact, many technological breakthroughs took place during and after WWII. This was a time of inventions undreamed of such as a bomb powerful enough to destroy entire cities; but besides faster airplanes or impenetrable tanks, technology found its way into cars and home appliances. Alan Moore takes this premise and builds upon it.

Steve Traynor –formerly known as Jetlad- is a 16 year-old-kid that gained celebrity status after flying airplanes in WWII when he was merely 12. Can you imagine a young boy like him?, some sort of naïve and enthusiastic Robin from the early Batman adventures, or a Bucky from Captain America in the 40s? He is 16 now, though, and he’s no longer parading around patriotic soldiers, nor is he neutralizing Nazi’s strongholds. He’s no one important now, and he is well aware of that. In the train, he’s forced to share his seat with a vampire child, a sturdy robot and his long-time ally and collaborator, Leni Muller –formerly known as the Skywitch- a German woman that fought against the forces of the Third Reich. She used to be a prominent heroine, but now she is willing to make a living any way she can, even if that means working in bars at nights.

Together, they arrive to Neopolis, a pulsating city, a place of wonderment and excitement: this is the only place in America in which the extraordinary becomes ordinary. In the future, Neopolis will be a megacity inhabited by superhuman people, bizarre androids, gods and monsters, supernatural creatures, aliens from outer space and from alternative dimensions; always pushing the boundaries of imagination, Neopolis will be the capital of the impossible. But this is now. Neopolis is still a syncretic juxtaposition of American values and traditions with the unpredictability of modernity and new morals. This duality is also made obvious in the architecture, beautiful art deco buildings compete with gigantic and futuristic designs. Everything is old and new at the same time, everything is familiar and yet completely unrecognizable.

Nonetheless, as readers we can recognize the inspiration behind the boy and the woman. Steve Traynor is a homage to Steve Trevor, an airplane pilot that falls into the arms of Wonder Woman, an amazon princess that bears a certain resemblance to Skywitch. In the same way that sex can never be consummated between Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor, Jetlad and Skywitch will never be able to share this level of intimacy, and not because of the age difference.

Steve and Leni decide to go to a bar, Scowling Joe’s, and even though the owner won’t sell drinks to underage kids such as Steve, he gives them a warm welcome. In a table, they meet a group of experienced combatants: the Skysharks, war pilots that fought valiantly in WWII. They decide to hire Steve as a mechanic, after all, he has a lot of experience with aircrafts. When a group of vampire mobsters makes an entrance into the bar, three officers of Neopolis police department deal with the situation. Inspired by the Maiden –apparently the reincarnation of Joan of Arc– Leni decides to join the police force.

Steve repairs airplanes at the Skysharks’ hangar and earns enough to pay for his rented room, at the same time, Leni enjoys her work in the police, as she feels she can make a difference in the city. Patrolling the streets she finds the most absurd and mind-blowing crimes. A peaceful coexistence is rather impossible in a city inhabited by vampires, ghouls, wraiths, intelligent animals, robots, supermen and old war heroes. Even the issue of superheroes and their sidekicks has already raised suspicions: “The church people, the mothers’ groups, they worry about these men, all the time with little kids. Ask me, they are all queers”.

Wulf, one of the Skysharks, soon befriends Steve. As the man and the teenager watch together old reels from the war, Steve realizes that even as a 12 year old boy he was still sexually objectified, something that had never crossed his mind before. Sexuality in children has always been a taboo, and even according to the laws of Neopolis, children should at all costs be protected from the dangers of sex. All of this makes Steve uncomfortable, and as a result he decides to do what a grown-up should do: that is to find joy in a woman’s body, namely in his friend Leni.

When Steve and Leni are naked in bed, it’s impossible for him to maintain an erection. Ashamed and angry he immediately leaves the room. What has happened between them? This is clearly a matter of sexuality. And the best way to understand sexuality is by remembering Michele Foucault’s “Histoire de la sexualité”. In the past, abolishing all forms of ‘irregular’ sexuality was seen as a necessary measure to preserve health and procreation. Many forms of sexuality were deemed as harmful and societies wanted to protect health and the purity of the race. The Nazis, indeed, also shared this vision of “purity of race” and were always against homosexuality. It’s especially interesting, then, to see that Neopolis has embraced many ‘regenerated’ Nazi scientists, the men who were supposed to build weapons more powerful than the atomic bomb are now fueling the new wave of inventions for the America of tomorrow.

At the same time that Steve recoils and leaves Leni’s room, a most gruesome act takes place. The vampire mobsters attack Scowling Joe’s bar, they first cut Joe’s neck and drink his blood and then undress and rape the cleaning lady. Sex takes place, one way or another, although here it occurs violently. The brilliant parallel established by Moore between Steve’s temporary impotence and the overtly abusive sexuality of a gang of bloodsuckers takes on a whole new level thanks to Gene Ha’s wonderful and powerful images.

The next day, Leni and other Neopolis police officers enter into a vampire hideout, a place visited by men that pay to have small amounts of their blood sucked because they find pleasure in such acts. In a city in which superpowers are common currency, it’s hard to adhere to sexually acceptable behaviors; although, at the same time, this is 1949, an era of sexual intolerance. As Foucault explains, in the past, the doctrines on sexuality postulated several "unnatural" sexual behaviors. In the 16th century, the focus was on regulating the sexuality of the married couple, disregarding other forms of sexual relations, but as time passed the focus shifted to the sexuality of children (masturbation), male and female homosexuality, fetishism, etc.

After a battle with the vampires, some arrests are made, but even in the city of tomorrow corruption is still something hard to deal with. One of the vampire’s clients is no other than the major’s nephew, and now the police captain must face a lot of pressure from the authorities because of this one unfortunate arrest.

Un chico, un hombre y una mujer deben encontrar su lugar en una nueva y extraña ciudad al final de la segunda guerra mundial. Es 1949, y Norteamérica está todavía herida, buscando posibles soluciones mientras se reconstruye a sí misma. Todo es nuevo para ellos, pero al mismo tiempo el horror de la guerra está todavía fresco.

De hecho, muchos avances tecnológicos ocurrieron durante o después de la segunda guerra mundial. Esta fue una época de inventos jamás soñados, de bombas capaces de destruir ciudades enteras; pero además de aviones más rápidos o tanques impenetrables, la tecnología se desarrolló también en automóviles y electrodomésticos. Alan Moore toma esta premisa y la explota.

Steve Traynor -AKA Jetlad- es un chiquillo de 16 años que alcanzó un status de celebridad luego de volar aeroplanos en la segunda guerra mundial cuando apenas tenía 12 años. ¿Pueden imaginarse a un chico así? ¿Una especie de entusiasta e ingenuo Robin de las primeras aventuras de Batman? ¿O un Bucky (de Capitán América) de los 40? Ahora tiene 16, y ya no parrandea con patrióticos soldados, ni neutraliza bases nazis. Ya no es nadie importante, y está conciente de ello. En el tren, se ve obligado a compartir su asiento con un niño vampiro, un robot macizo y su antigua colaboradora, Leni Muller -AKA Skywitch- una mujer alemana que luchó en contra de las fuerzas del tercer reich. Ella solía ser una heroína prominente, pero ahora está dispuesta a ganarse la vida como pueda, así sea cantando en bares durante las noches.

Juntos, llegan a Neopolis, una vibrante ciudad, un lugar de maravilla y emoción: este es el único lugar en Estados Unidos en donde lo extraordinario se convierte en ordinario. En el futuro, Neopolis será una mega ciudad habitada por súper hombres, androides bizarros, dioses y monstruos, criaturas sobrenaturales, extraterrestres del espacio exterior y de dimensiones alternativas; siempre empujando los límites de la imaginación, Neopolis será la capital de lo imposible. Pero esto es ahora. Neopolis todavía es una yuxtaposición sincrética de tradiciones y valores norteamericanos con la imprevisibilidad de la modernidad y de la nueva moral. Esta dualidad también se hace obvia en la arquitectura, en la belleza de los edificios art decó que compiten con titánicos diseños futuristas. Todo es nuevo y viejo al mismo tiempo, todo es familiar y, sin embargo, completamente irreconocible.

Pero, ¿en quiénes se inspira Alan Moore para crear al chicho y a la mujer? Steve Traynor es un homenaje a Steve Trevor, un aviador que aterriza en los brazos de Wonder Woman, la princesa amazona, que guarda cierta semejanza con Skywitch. Del mismo modo que el sexo nunca puede ser consumado entre Wonder Woman y Steve Trevor, Jetlad y Skywitch jamás compartirán este nivel de intimidad, aunque por otros motivos.

Steve y Leni deciden ir a un bar, "Scowling Joe’s", y aunque el propietario no le venda alcohol a los menores de edad, les da la bienvenida. En una mesa, encuentran a un grupo de experimentados combatientes: los Skysharks, pilotos de guerra que pelearon valientemente en la segunda guerra mundial. Ellos deciden contratar a Steve como mecánico, después de todo, él tiene experiencia con aeronaves. Cuando un grupo de vampiros mafiosos irrumpen en el bar, tres oficiales del departamento de policía de Neopolis se encargan de la situación. Inspirada por la Doncella -aparentemente la reencarnación de Juana de Arco- Leni decide unirse a las fuerzas policiales.

Steve repara aeronaves en el hangar de los Skysharks, y gana lo suficiente para pagar la renta, al mismo tiempo, Leni disfruta con su trabajo como policía. Patrullando las calles, ella descubre los crímenes más absurdos e inimaginables. La coexistencia pacífica es prácticamente imposible en una ciudad habitada por vampiros, engendros, espectros, animales inteligentes, robots, superhombres y viejos héroes de guerra. Incluso el tema de los súper héroes y de sus discípulos ya ha levantado sospechas: "La gente de la iglesia, los grupos de madres, se preocupan por estos hombres, todo tiempo con niños pequeños. Me lo dirán a mí, son todos unos maricas".

Wulf, uno de los Skysharks, pronto se hace amigo de Steve. Cuando el hombre y el adolescente miran viejas cintas de la guerra, Steve se da cuenta que incluso como un chico de 12 años él era un objeto de deseo sexual, algo que nunca antes se la había pasado por la cabeza. La sexualidad en niños siempre ha sido un tabú, e incluso de acuerdo con las leyes de Neopolis, los niños deben ser protegidos de los peligros del sexo. Todo esto hace que Steve se sienta incómodo, y en consecuencia decide hacer lo que los adultos hacen: encontrar el goce en el cuerpo de una mujer, en este caso, su amiga Leni.

Cuando Steve y Leni están desnudos en la cama, él nos es capaz de mantener una erección. Avergonzado y molesto inmediatamente sale de la habitación. ¿Qué ha pasado entre ellos? Esto es claramente un asunto de sexualidad. Y la mejor manera de entender la sexualidad es recordando la “Histoire de la sexualité”, de Michele Foucault. En el pasado, la abolición de todas las formas de sexualidad 'irregular' se consideraba como algo necesario para preservar la salud y la procreación. Muchas formas de sexualidad fueron etiquetadas como perniciosas, y las sociedades deseaban proteger la salud y la pureza de la raza. De hecho, los nazis también compartieron esta visión de la 'pureza racial', y siempre estuvieron en contra de la homosexualidad. Es especialmente interesante, entonces, ver que Neopolis ha albergado a muchos científicos nazis, los hombres que se suponían debían construir armas más poderosas que la bomba atómica están ahora impulsando la nueva ola de inventos para la Norteamérica del mañana.

Al mismo tiempo que Steve se retira del cuarto de Leni, ocurre un acto terrible. Los vampiros mafiosos atacan el bar de Scowling Joe’s, primero cortan el cuello de Joe y beben su sangre, luego desvisten y violan a la mucama. El sexo ocurre, de un modo u otro, aunque sea violentamente. El brillante paralelo establecido por Moore entre la temporal impotencia de Steve y la sexualidad abusiva de la banda de chupasangres alcanza un nivel insuperable gracias a las maravillosas y poderosas imágenes de Gene Ha.

Al día siguiente, Leni y otros policías de Neopolis entran al escondite de los vampiros, un lugar visitado por hombres que pagan para que les succionen una pequeña cantidad de sangre, porque encuentran placer en este acto. En una ciudad en la que los súper poderes abundan, es difícil adherirse a comportamientos sexualmente aceptables; aunque, al mismo tiempo, esto es 1949, una era de intolerancia sexual. Como explica Foucault, en el pasado, las doctrinas de la sexualidad postularon que había varios comportamientos sexuales 'no naturales'. En el siglo XVI, la meta era regular la sexualidad de las parejas casadas, desestimando otras formas de relaciones sexuales, pero conforme pasó el tiempo, la atención se centró en la sexualidad de los niños (la masturbación), la homosexualidad masculina y femenina, el fetichismo, etc.

Después de una contienda con los vampiros, se hacen algunos arrestos, pero ni siquiera la ciudad del mañana está libre de corrupción. Uno de lo clientes de los vampiros es el sobrino del alcalde, y ahora el capitán de la policía debe enfrentar una enorme presión de parte de la autoridades a causa de este infortunado arresto.
