King-Size Conan - Roy Thomas, Steve McNiven et al

The first time in my life that I bought comic books online was in 2006. I knew exactly what I wanted to buy: the trade paperbacks with the legendary Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s run on Conan the Barbarian. It took me 5 years to review the whole run. I was delighted to re-read all those stories that I had first read as a child thanks to my father’s comic book collection. My connection with Conan is as old as my status as a reader, and as strong as my passion for comics and all forms of literature.

In 1970, Marvel Comics published the first issue of Conan the Barbarian, “The Coming of Conan”. Now, half a century later, Marvel Comics has celebrated the 50 year anniversary of that classic story in the best possible way: by paying homage to Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith and John Buscema. “King -Size Conan” (February 2021) explores the different facets of the mythical warrior: the barbarian, the thief, the mercenary, the avenger and the corsair. All elements which we can glance at in the amazing cover by Andrew Robinson.

Steve McNiven

A different creative team is in charge of each one of these aspects. And so the first, the barbarian, is a story titled “Aftermath -- and a Beginning” written by Roy Thomas himself. I don’t think there has been a case like this in the history of comic books, in which the same writer returns to the character and title that made him famous, after half a century. 50 years have passed but Thomas continues to be an amazing storyteller, and one of the few who truly grasped what it meant to be a Cimmerian wandering the Hyborean Age.

“Aftermath -- and a Beginning” is beautifully illustrated by Steve McNiven, who has put a lot of effort into channelizing the spirit and vigor of Barry Windsor-Smith’s pencils. McNiven achieves that which I would have considered impossible: he brings back the original Conan, and applies the artistic sensitivity of the British artist in such a unique way that one cannot stop staring at the pages in awe. McNiven takes Windsor-Smith as his inspiration, and everything in his pages, from the composition to the movement of the characters and especially the facial expressions, reminds us of the artistic evolution of the British artist in the 70s. Roy Thomas and Steve McNiven create a powerful story that connects to “The Coming of Conan”, by telling us what happened in the hours preceding the encounter between the barbarian and the Aesirs and Vanirs. 

Steve McNiven

Kurt Busiek writes “In the City of Thieves”, with pencils and inks by Pete Woods. This one also works as a prequel of sorts to “The Tower of the Elephant”, as it tells us what had Conan stolen the previous night before attempting to enter the tower. Busiek offers us a solid script and it’s interesting to see the way in which he connects this to one of the best-known Conan stories. 

“Die by the Sword” is written by Chris Claremont and magnificently penciled and inked by Roberto de la Torre. Unlike the previous two stories, this one stands on its own and it isn’t necessarily linked to one of the classic Roy Thomas comics; however, artistically, it has a strong connection to what many considered to be the ultimate Cimmerian artist: John Buscema. If McNiven exceled at transforming his style to adapt to Windsor-Smith, de la Torre does the same here: from the page composition to the dynamic movement of his characters and especially the design of Conan and the other characters, everything reminds us of the great Buscema. 

Pete Woods

Kevin Eastman’s “Requiem” is an interesting story in which Conan seeks to avenge the people of a small village. “Ship of the Damned” takes place in the time in which Conan and Belit were allies and lovers. Steven S. DeKnight writes the script and the fantastic artwork is by Jesús Saiz. This pulse pounding adventure reunites the She-Devil of the Sea and the barbarian corsair. Closer to the horror genre than the other stories, DeKnight succeeds in capturing our attention while Saiz’s clean lines and fabulously original images add special depth to the story. The end is also connected to the unforgettable Conan the Barbarian # 100. King-Size Conan is definitely the best comic I’ve read in 2021 so far! I really recommend it.

Un equipo creativo diferente se encarga de cada uno de estos aspectos. Y así, el primero, el bárbaro, es una historia titulada "Un desenlace -- y un comienzo" escrita por el propio Roy Thomas. No creo que haya habido un caso como este en la historia del cómic, en el que el mismo escritor vuelva al personaje y título que lo hizo famoso, después de medio siglo. Han pasado 50 años, pero Thomas sigue siendo un narrador asombroso y uno de los pocos que realmente comprendió lo que significaba ser un cimerio vagando por la Era Hiborea.

Steve McNiven, quien se ha esforzado mucho en canalizar el espíritu y el vigor de los lápices de Barry Windsor-Smith, ilustra preciosamente "Un desenlace -- y un comienzo". McNiven logra lo que yo hubiera considerado imposible: recupera el Conan original y aplica la sensibilidad artística del artista británico de una manera tan única que uno no puede dejar de mirar las páginas con asombro. McNiven toma a Windsor-Smith como su inspiración, y todo en sus páginas, desde la composición hasta el movimiento de los personajes y especialmente las expresiones faciales, nos recuerda la evolución artística del artista británico en los 70s. Kurt Busiek escribe “En la ciudad de los ladrones”, con lápices y tintas de Pete Woods. Esta también funciona como una especie de precuela de "La torre del elefante" (“The Tower of the Elephant”), ya que nos dice qué había robado Conan la noche anterior antes de intentar entrar en la torre. Busiek nos ofrece un guión sólido y es interesante ver cómo lo conecta con una de las historias más conocidas de Conan.

Jesús Saiz

“Muere por la espada” está escrita por Chris Claremont y magníficamente dibujada a lápiz y entintada por Roberto de la Torre. A diferencia de las dos historias anteriores, esta no está necesariamente vinculada a uno de los cómics clásicos de Roy Thomas; sin embargo, artísticamente, tiene una fuerte conexión con aquel que muchos consideraban el artista cimerio definitivo: John Buscema. Si McNiven sobresalió en transformar su estilo para adaptarse a Windsor-Smith, de la Torre hace lo mismo aquí: desde la composición de la página hasta el movimiento dinámico de sus personajes y sobre todo el diseño de Conan y los demás personajes, todo nos recuerda al gran Buscema.

"Requiem" de Kevin Eastman es una historia interesante en la que Conan busca vengar a la gente de un pequeño pueblo. “La nave de los condenados” ocurre en la época en la que Conan y Belit eran aliados y amantes. Steven S. DeKnight escribe el guión y el fantástico arte es de Jesús Saiz. Esta trepidante aventura reúne a la diablesa del mar y al corsario bárbaro. Más cerca del género de terror que las otras historias, DeKnight logra captar nuestra atención, mientras que las líneas limpias de Saiz y las imágenes fabulosamente originales añaden una profundidad especial a la historia. El final también está relacionado con el inolvidable Conan the Barbarian # 100. ¡King-Size Conan es definitivamente el mejor cómic que he leído hasta ahora en el 2021! Realmente lo recomiendo.

The Punisher # 1-4 (2000) - Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon

The beginning of the 21st century was truly a golden age for Marvel Comics, all thanks to English, Scottish and Irish writers like Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis who revitalized superheroes that in the past had fallen in the hands of rather incompetent writers. For some reason, in 1998, someone at Marvel had decided that it was time for Punisher to meet the angels from heaven and be transformed into “a supernatural angel of vengeance”, as Brian Cronin explains in his column about “stories that are likely best left forgotten”.

In only 2 pages, Garth Ennis quickly fixes this continuity issue and reinstates Frank Castle as a street vigilante, an urban legend that all criminals fear and know as the Punisher. In “Welcome Back, Frank” (originally published in The Punisher vol. 5 # 1, April 2000, as part of the Marvels Knight initiative), the Punisher explains this will be a “Solo act again. No Micro. No gimmicks. No fancy ammo, no battle-vans, no hi-tech surveillance. Just the basics”.

Punisher is no superhero. That much is clear. He never was one. After witnessing how his whole family is murdered, this Vietnam veteran decides to take justice in his own hands, and swears to kill every criminal in New York City. According to Ennis, Frank Castle is “a mass-murderer, whose bodycount must run well into the tens of thousands by now”. 

Punisher doesn’t believe in rehabilitating criminals, he believes in putting a bullet through their skulls. And the New York Police Department doesn’t seem to care about what he does with his free time. However, to maintain appearances, the commissioner decides to create a task force to deal with the Punisher as we can seen in “Badaboom, Badabing” (The Punisher # 2, May 2000). The commissioner names detective Soap as the leader of the task force, the most useless and mediocre officer in the whole force, a man who hasn’t been able to solve a single case in decades. The rest of the task force is comprised by Buddy Plug, a behavioral psychologist who looks like a deeply disturbed individual. 

In “The Devil by the Horns” (The Punisher # 3, May 2000), we get to see the exciting confrontation between Punisher and Daredevil. Ennis writes an intense sequence in which Punisher basically forces Daredevil to take the kind of decision he takes constantly, killing someone to prevent more deaths. In the end, all the philosophical differences between the vigilante and the superhero are narrowed down to a finger on a gun’s trigger.  

In “Wild Kingdom” (The Punisher # 4, June 2000) the mafia leader Ma Gnucci wrongfully believes she has cornered Frank Castle in the Central Park Zoo, but even without weapons, the Punisher proves to be every bit as lethal. This entire miniseries is penciled by the legendary British artist Steve Dillon, famous for his iconic run in Judge Dredd and for Preacher. Dillon has always been a magnificent and very creative artist, capable of creating a new world or reconstructing an old one, or jumping back and forth from one to another. His visual talent resides not only in his unique worldbuilding capability but also in the expressiveness of his characters. Jimmy Palmiotti is the inker and Chris Sotomayor is the colorist, and together they form a great artistic team. And the extraordinary Tim Bradstreet provides provocative and haunting covers, creating a rich atmosphere of violence and fear.

El comienzo del siglo XXI fue verdaderamente una edad de oro para Marvel Comics, todo gracias a escritores ingleses, escoceses e irlandeses como Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis y Garth Ennis, quienes revitalizaron a superhéroes que en el pasado habían caído en manos de escritores bastante incompetentes. Por alguna razón, en 1998, a alguien en Marvel se le ocurrió que era hora de que Punisher conociera a los ángeles del cielo y se transformara en "un ángel de venganza sobrenatural", como explica Brian Cronin en su columna sobre “historias que probablemente sea  mejor olvidar”.

Frank Castle (Punisher)

En sólo 2 páginas, Garth Ennis soluciona rápidamente este problema de continuidad y reinstala a Frank Castle como un vigilante callejero, una leyenda urbana que todos los criminales temen y conocen como Punisher. En “Bienvenido de vuelta, Frank” (publicado originalmente en The Punisher vol. 5 # 1, abril del 2000, como parte de la iniciativa Marvels Knight), Punisher explica que esto será un “acto en solitario nuevamente. No Micro. Sin trucos. Sin munición extravagante, sin camionetas de combate, sin vigilancia de alta tecnología. Sólo lo básico ”.

Punisher no es un superhéroe. Eso está claro. Nunca lo fue. Después de presenciar cómo toda su familia es asesinada, este veterano de Vietnam decide tomar la justicia por su mano y jura matar a todos los criminales de la ciudad de New York. Según Ennis, Frank Castle es "un asesino en masa, cuyo recuento de cadáveres debe ascender a decenas de miles a estas alturas".

Neighbors / vecinos

Punisher no cree en la rehabilitación de criminales, cree en ponerles una bala en el cráneo. Y al Departamento de Policía de New York no parece importarle lo que hace con su tiempo libre. Sin embargo, para mantener las apariencias, el comisionado decide crear un grupo de trabajo para lidiar con Punisher, como podemos ver en “Badaboom, Badabing” (The Punisher # 2, mayo del 2000). El comisionado nombra al detective Soap como líder del grupo de trabajo, el oficial más inútil y mediocre de todos, un hombre que no ha podido resolver ni un sólo caso en décadas. El resto del grupo de trabajo está compuesto por Buddy Plug, un psicólogo conductista que parece ser un individuo profundamente perturbado.

Daredevil versus Punisher

En “El diablo por los cuernos” (The Punisher # 3, mayo del 2000), podemos ver el impactante enfrentamiento entre Punisher y Daredevil. Ennis escribe una secuencia intensa en la que Punisher básicamente obliga a Daredevil a tomar el tipo de decisión que él toma constantemente, matar a alguien para evitar más muertes. Al final, todas las diferencias filosóficas entre el vigilante y el superhéroe se reducen a un dedo en el gatillo de una pistola.

October Comics / cómics de octubre

In October I went to Salt Lake City for the second time this year, so I didn’t have time to read my comics and oh boy, I sure got more this month than in previous ones! Marvel # 1 was a great first issue, even better than Marvels Snapshots Spider-Man. Strange Adventures continues to surprise just as The Boys Dear Beckie does. Norse Mythology seems to be promising, and Scumbag #1 was funny and raunchy, just up my alley. Legion of Super-Heroes is quite good. My favorite issue of the month was Marvels X #6. And now without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

BATMAN WHITE KNIGHT BATMAN DAY #1 Special Ed (Net)

Just in time for Batman Day 2018 on September 15, DC reprints the sold-out first issue of the acclaimed miniseries written and illustrated by Sean Murphy! Only 4 comics in January? Well, all I can say is that there will be more next time. Bendis continues to do a good job with the Legion of Super-Heroes, The Dollhouse Family is extraordinary, and this issue of Punisher Soviet is my favorite of the Ennis miniseries. But if I had to choose the best comic of the month then it would be Marvels X # 1, Alex Ross and Jim Krueger have done it again! Conan the Barbarian: Exodus - Esad Ribic

Exactly a year ago, I read the first issue of the new Conan the Barbarian series edited by Marvel. It certainly was a return to greatness, after a not so stellar run in the hands of a different publisher. One of the main reasons I decided to buy all Conan issues was the cover art. Esad Ribić illustrated all 12 Conan covers last year, and each one of them is spectacular.

Ribić is a Croatian artist who started working for Marvel Comics in 2000, exceling as a cover artist in popular titles such as Wolverine, in which he got away with portraying a naked Nightcrawler in the cover of the 6th issue. In any case, “heir to masters like Frank Frazetta and Alex Ross, Ribić combines photorealism with impressionism, and the result is a premium selection of beautiful and unforgettable covers”. And in addition of being one of the best cover artists in the industry, Ribić is also an incredibly talented penciler, inker and colorist. 

Ribić is the reason why I started reading Thor: God of Thunder, and he’s the reason why I picked up the new Conan the Barbarian series, and when I saw he’d be in charge of a very special one-shot, I immediately knew I had to get it. “15 winters in Cimmeria have toughened the young Conan, but his greatest challenge lies ahead. Braving the elements, without food, without shelter, without weapons, Conan must learn to survive even as nature itself conspires to stop him. The snow freezes his bones. The wolves smell his blood. But if he can reach civilization, will his wounds heal…or will his troubles just begin?”. That is the beginning of a story written, penciled, inked and colored by the Croatian artist, and the result is absolutely impressive. 

I had no idea Ribić was such a wonderful writer, and he does what is most difficult for a writer: tell a silent story. Based on my own experience, when it comes to writing comics, there are basically 3 levels of difficulty, in the first level, the easy one, a writer uses everything at his disposal, thought balloons, captions, large exposition dialogues to explain what’s going on, etc. No good writer stays on that first level. In the second level, the intermediate one, a writer focuses on storytelling and replaces captions and thought balloons with panels that will convey that information visually. In the third level, the difficult one, a writer eliminates all text. If one can tell a story without words, then one is truly a master of the comic book medium, and that is precisely what Ribić proves in the pages of Exodus.

In this “man versus nature” setting, I can only think of masters like the Italians Berardi & Milazzo who were able to tell a moving and shocking story in 20 silent pages. Again, it isn’t an easy task to tell an entire story without a single word being pronounced by your protagonist. But Ribić doesn’t need sentences or dialogues, because one of his images is worth at least a thousand words. From the extraordinary cover in which Conan stabs a wolf with an improvised weapon, to the stunning inner art in which Conan must run from the other wolves in the pack, everything that we need to see to understand what’s going on is there, and the silence creates an even greater dramatic tension than anything else. Ribić also makes us realize how desperate Conan is, and how starvation forces him to the most reckless decisions. The absolute beauty of Ribić’s lines, his harmonic designs and his delicate chromatic balance turn each page into a unique work of art.

Hace exactamente un año, leí el primer número de la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian editada por Marvel. Ciertamente fue un regreso a la grandeza, después de una etapa no muy estelar que digamos en manos de una editorial diferente. Una de las principales razones por las que decidí comprar todos los números de Conan fue la portada. Esad Ribić ilustró las 12 portadas de Conan el año pasado, y cada una de ellas es espectacular.

Ribić es un artista croata que comenzó a trabajar para Marvel Comics en el 2000, sobresaliendo como portadista en títulos tan populares como Wolverine, en el que se salió con la suya al retratar a un Nightcrawler desnudo en la portada del sexto número. En cualquier caso, “heredero de maestros como Frank Frazetta y Alex Ross, Ribić combina el fotorrealismo con el impresionismo, y el resultado es una excelente selección de portadas hermosas e inolvidables”. Y además de ser uno de los mejores portadistas de la industria, Ribić también es un dibujante, entintador y colorista increíblemente talentoso.

Ribić es la razón por la que comencé a leer Thor: God of Thunder, y él es la razón por la que compré la nueva serie de Conan the Barbarian, y cuando vi que estaría a cargo de un one-shot muy especial, inmediatamente supe que debía conseguirlo. “15 inviernos en Cimmeria han endurecido al joven Conan, pero su mayor desafío está por delante. No tenía idea de que Ribić era un escritor tan maravilloso, y hace lo más difícil que puede hacer un escritor: contar una historia silenciosa. Según mi propia experiencia, cuando se trata de escribir cómics, existen básicamente 3 niveles de dificultad, en el primer nivel, el fácil, un escritor usa todo lo que tiene a su disposición, globos de pensamiento, cajas de texto, grandes diálogos de exposición para explicar lo que está sucediendo, etc. Ningún buen escritor permanece en ese primer nivel. En el segundo nivel, el intermedio, un escritor se enfoca en la narración de historias y reemplaza las cajas de texto y los globos de pensamiento con viñetas que transmitirán esa información visualmente. En el tercer nivel, el difícil, un escritor elimina todo el texto. Si uno puede contar una historia sin palabras, entonces uno es verdaderamente un maestro del medio del cómic, y eso es precisamente lo que Ribić demuestra en las páginas de Éxodo.

En este entorno de "hombre versus naturaleza", solo puedo pensar en maestros como los italianos Berardi y Milazzo, que podían contar una historia conmovedora e impactante en 20 páginas silenciosas. Nuevamente, no es una tarea fácil contar una historia completa sin que tu protagonista pronuncie una sola palabra. Pero Ribić no necesita oraciones ni diálogos, porque una de sus imágenes vale al menos mil palabras. Desde la extraordinaria portada en la que Conan apuñala a un lobo con un arma improvisada, hasta el impresionante arte interior en el que Conan debe huir de los otros lobos de la manada, todo lo que necesitamos ver para comprender lo que está sucediendo está ahí, y el silencio crea una tensión dramática aún mayor que cualquier otra cosa. Ribić también nos hace darnos cuenta de cuán desesperado está Conan y de cómo el hambre lo obliga a tomar las decisiones más imprudentes. La belleza absoluta de las líneas de Ribić, sus diseños armónicos y su delicado equilibrio cromático convierten cada página en una obra de arte única.

December comics / cómics de diciembre

In December I traveled again to Wisconsin (it’s my fifth trip there since I moved to California), and after spending Christmas and New Year’s in Milwaukee, I came back to Davis and started reading my December comics. The much awaited conclusion of Batman Creature of the Night was great. I really enjoyed Die’s final chapter, as well as the second issue of Dollhouse, Punisher and Legion of Super-Heroes. American Gods continues to be one of the best ongoing titles, and the end of Invaders was quite fitting. However, if I had to choose the best issue of the month then that would be King Thor #4, after 8 years, Jason Aaron has put an end to his awarded run on Thor, with one final issue that is a heartfelt homage to the God of Thunder. And now, without further ado, here are December comics as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS #8
