February might be the shortest month of the year, but I still managed to watch half a dozen productions from different decades. Let’s start with Andrew Haigh’s best film to date, All of Us Strangers (2023), a captivating, painful and deeply emotional exploration of coming to terms with loss while embracing one’s true sexuality.  Andrew Scott is a man in his 40s, with a successful career and a nice apartment in London, but his life is rather empty. His loneliness is so intense that creates an emotional resonance with the audience from the very beginning. The fear of getting close to someone, the fear of losing them, the difficulty in communicating with others, it’s all there… until the protagonist meets Paul Mescal, the outgoing gay neighbor; at the same time, he visits the old family house and is shocked to discover that his dead father, Jamie Bell (The Chumscrubber), and his dead mother, Claire Foy (The Crown), are back. What follows is a process of rediscovery: the parents, now younger than their own son, accept that the 10-year-old boy they last saw is now a 40-year-old man, and when he reveals that he is gay, they struggle to understand. After all, being stuck on time, in their era being gay is seen as a perversion and a death sentence due to AIDS. And yet, although the protagonist explains that in today’s world it’s ok to be gay, he can’t explain why he is completely alone, why he is sad and miserable all the time… and so they suggest him to take the relationship with his neighbor to the next level. What follows, nevertheless, will be extremely sad, and yet that is precisely what makes All of Us Strangers one of the most powerful films of 2023.

 

The Marvels (2023) has to be the weakest Marvel movie of the decade. It was nice to see Brie Larson reprising her role as Captain Marvel and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. I would’ve  thought that having Photon (Teyonah Parris) and Ms. Marvel could make things interesting, but in the end the movie feels pointless and, above all, boring. Perhaps one of the few good moments was seeing Kelsey Grammer as the Beast in the after credits scene. Even after watching this one for free, it feels like a big letdown.

Your Christmas or Mine 2 (2023), is a sequel to the Christmas movie from 2022, Asa Butterfield (Your Christmas or Mine) is reunited with Cora Kirk, and this time the two families have decided to spend the holidays together. Although the previous movie was quite funny this one barely has a couple of good moments. The plot here is very weak and most of the actors seem tired or bored. A disappointing sequel.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) has a few fun moments, and I think for hardcore Star Wars fans it can be entertaining to see Han Solo and Chewbacca’s first encounter, or how they end up with the Falcon Millenium. The cast is quite good: Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Woody Harrelson (Triangle of Sadness), etc. Still, I would say this is a movie that feels unnecessary and that can be easily skipped. 

A really long time ago I saw Zombieland (2009), directed by Ruben Fleischer, and I’m glad I decided to see it again. I love zombie movies, and I love zombie parodies just as much! Zombieland is a great comedy because it understands the essence of zombie movies and, especially, the rules of this particular subgenre. Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) is a college student who had a very antisocial life until the zombie apocalypse begun. Since then, he has learned to survive in a very dangerous world by strictly adhering to a very useful list. When he meets Woody Harrelson, a strong fighter obsessed with a certain brand of sweets, they decide to travel together. And in the process they end up meeting Emma Stone (Magic in the Moonlight) and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), two sisters who always have their own secret plans. One of the most hilarious moments takes place in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, when the group decides to enter into Bill Murray’s mansion, only to discover that the famous actor is still there. There are many amazing scenes, and I have to say I was laughing out loud from the beginning to the end. 

A decade after, it was time for Ruben Fleischer to direct the sequel Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). It was very interesting to see what had happened to the beloved characters of the first movie after 10 years. And I’ll say that even if the sequel isn’t as brilliant as the first one, it’s still very entertaining. The main characters are living in the abandoned White House, enjoying a comfortable although predictable life. Suddenly, Jesse Eisenberg (Louder Than Bombs) and Emma Stone (Paper Man) end up fighting and that splits the group in half. Jesse Eisenberg will meet Zoey Deutch a new girl, and finally, together with Woody Harrelson they’ll go to find the missing Abigail Breslin. There are, of course, very funny confrontations with the zombies. It might not have the same magic as the original, but I enjoyed it anyway. 

Directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes, Home Alone (1990) is one of those indisputable Christmas classics that will make you laugh out loud no matter how many times you’ve seen it before. A child, Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone 2), is accidentally left alone at home by his family, and he must do everything he can to adapt to a life without adult supervision and then to protect his home from two greedy burglars. For some reason I had already reviewed the sequel, also by Columbus and Hughes, which is even better, but now, I watched both of them again and I truly enjoyed them. Great fun for all the family!

Tremors (1990), directed by Ron Underwood, is one of those movies I’ve seen a lot of times, and for some reason I never get tired of it. I always love that strange sense of community that develops between the characters when they realize that they’re under attack by mysterious and dangerous subterranean creatures. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward have no money and not much of a future in a small town they want to abandon, but all roads are blocked, and unexplainable deaths start happening. Soon, in collaboration with college student Finn Carter, local teenager Bobby Jacoby, and a couple of survivalists with plenty of weapons, they fight against these creatures. Humor, suspense and memorable interactions, Tremors is full of good surprises.

Puede que febrero sea el mes más corto del año, pero aun así logré ver media docena de producciones de diferentes décadas. Comencemos con la mejor película de Andrew Haigh hasta la fecha, All of Us Strangers (2023), una exploración cautivadora, dolorosa y profundamente emocional sobre cómo aceptar la pérdida y al mismo tiempo abrazar la verdadera sexualidad. Andrew Scott es un hombre cuarentón, con una carrera exitosa y un bonito apartamento en Londres, pero su vida está bastante vacía. Su soledad es tan intensa que crea una resonancia emocional en el público desde el principio. El miedo a acercarse a alguien, el miedo a perderlo, la dificultad para comunicarse con los demás, todo está ahí… hasta que el protagonista conoce a Paul Mescal, el vecino gay extrovertido; al mismo tiempo, visita la antigua casa familiar y se sorprende al descubrir que su padre muerto, Jamie Bell (The Chumscrubber), y su madre muerta, Claire Foy (The Crown), han regresado. Lo que sigue es un proceso de redescubrimiento: los padres, ahora más jóvenes que su propio hijo, aceptan que el niño de 10 años que vieron por última vez es ahora un hombre de 40, y cuando les revela que es gay, intentan comprender. Your Christmas or Mine 2 (2023), es una secuela de la película navideña de 2022, Asa Butterfield (Your Christmas or Mine) se reencuentra con Cora Kirk, y esta vez las dos familias han decidido pasar las vacaciones juntas. Aunque la película anterior fue bastante divertida esta apenas tiene un par de buenos momentos. La trama aquí es muy débil y la mayoría de los actores parecen cansados o aburridos. Una secuela decepcionante.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) tiene algunos momentos divertidos, y creo que para los fanáticos incondicionales de Star Wars puede ser entretenido ver el primer encuentro de Han Solo y Chewbacca, o cómo terminan con el Falcon Millenium. El elenco es bastante bueno: Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Woody Harrelson (Triangle of Sadness), etc. Aún así, diría que esta es una película que se siente innecesaria y que se puede omitir fácilmente.

Hace mucho tiempo vi Zombieland (2009), dirigida por Ruben Fleischer, y me alegro de haber decidido verla de nuevo. ¡Me encantan las películas de zombies y también me encantan las parodias de zombies! Zombieland es una gran comedia porque entiende la esencia del cine de zombies y, sobre todo, las reglas de este subgénero tan particular. Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) es un estudiante universitario que tuvo una vida muy antisocial hasta que comenzó el apocalipsis zombie. Desde entonces, ha aprendido a sobrevivir en un mundo muy peligroso siguiendo estrictamente una lista de reglas muy útil. Cuando conoce a Woody Harrelson, un fuerte luchador obsesionado con cierta marca de dulces, deciden viajar juntos. Y en el proceso acaban conociendo a Emma Stone (Magic in the Moonlight) y Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), dos hermanas que siempre tienen sus propios planes secretos. Uno de los momentos más hilarantes tiene lugar en Beverly Hills, Los Ángeles, cuando el grupo decide entrar a la mansión de Bill Murray, sólo para descubrir que el famoso actor todavía está allí. Hay muchas escenas asombrosas y debo decir que me reí a carcajadas desde el principio hasta el final.

Una década después, llegó el momento de que Ruben Fleischer dirigiera la secuela Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). Fue muy interesante ver qué les había pasado a los queridos personajes de la primera película después de 10 años. Y diré que aunque la secuela no es tan brillante como la primera, sigue siendo muy entretenida. Los personajes principales viven en la Casa Blanca abandonada, disfrutando de una vida cómoda aunque predecible. De repente, Jesse Eisenberg (Louder Than Bombs) y Emma Stone (Paper Man) terminan peleando y eso divide al grupo por la mitad. Jesse Eisenberg conocerá a Zoey Deutch, una chica nueva, y finalmente, junto con Woody Harrelson irán a buscar a la desaparecida Abigail Breslin. Por supuesto, hay enfrentamientos muy divertidos con los zombies. Puede que no tenga la misma magia que la original, pero de todos modos la disfruté.

Dirigida por Chris Columbus y escrita por John Hughes, Home Alone (1990) es uno de esos clásicos navideños indiscutibles que te harán reír a carcajadas sin importar cuántas veces la hayas visto antes. Un niño, Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone 2), es dejado accidentalmente solo en casa por su familia, y debe hacer todo lo posible para adaptarse a la vida sin la supervisión de un adulto y luego proteger su hogar de dos ladrones codiciosos. Por alguna razón ya había reseñado la secuela, también de Columbus y Hughes, que es aún mejor, pero ahora que vi ambas nuevamente, realmente las disfruté. ¡Mucha diversión para toda la familia!

Tremors (1990), dirigida por Ron Underwood, es una de esas películas que he visto muchas veces y por alguna razón nunca me canso de ella. Siempre me ha encantado ese extraño sentido de comunidad que se desarrolla entre los personajes cuando se dan cuenta de que están siendo atacados por misteriosas y peligrosas criaturas subterráneas. Kevin Bacon y Fred Ward no tienen dinero ni mucho futuro en un pequeño pueblo que quieren abandonar, pero todas las carreteras están bloqueadas y empiezan a ocurrir muertes inexplicables. Pronto, en colaboración con la estudiante universitaria Finn Carter, el adolescente local Bobby Jacoby y un par de supervivientes con muchas armas, luchan contra estas criaturas. Humor, suspenso e interacciones memorables, Tremors está llena de buenas sorpresas.

In April I had the chance to travel to sunny Santa Barbara, but I also had time to watch recent productions such as Matt Ruskin’s Boston Strangler (2023), a historic thriller in which two brave female reporters try to uncover the mystery of the Boston Strangler, a serial killer who strangled numerous women in the 60s. Keira Knightley is a wife and mother who desperately wants to become an investigative journalist, although all the assignments she gets are fashion-related, until she convinces Chris Cooper, the editor of the Boston Record America, to allow her to investigate a series of recent homicides. After successfully finding elements in common in the strangling murders, the protagonist is assisted by Carrie Coon, another female journalist. Together they must face sexism and the negligence of Boston police, while reporting on a dangerous serial killer. Ruskin does a good job in terms of historical reconstruction and creates compelling characters.

Triangle of Sadness (2022), written and directed by Ruben Östlund, is an incendiary satire that made me laugh out loud but also kept me at the edge of my seat. Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean are the ideal couple, both very attractive supermodels and highly popular influencers who travel in a luxurious cruise along rich people. What at first seems to be an indictment on superficiality, on exterior beauty and the fame that comes from posting the right pictures on social media, turns out to be a very complex analysis on the nature of wealth and socioeconomic differences. Woody Harrelson is the alcoholic captain in charge of the ship, and Vicki Berlin the cold and efficient officer who keeps everything in order and tries to constantly satisfy the extravagant desires of her wealthy clientele. However, when disaster hits, the order is inverted, and suddenly the super-rich will need the survival skills of the woman who used to clean their toilets. Irreverent, brilliant and extraordinarily funny, Triangle of Sadness is one of the best films of 2022 and one that definitely deserved more awards. I highly recommend it. 

Todd Field writes and directs Tár (2022), a remarkable film that deals with the nature of power. Cate Blanchett is Lydia Tár, a famous and talented lesbian composer, part of a very exclusive group of people able to achieve the EGOT (all major awards, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). She seems unstoppable, at the top of her game, full of new projects. And suddenly, one simple accusation starts to derail her life, proving that cancel culture is more prevalent now than ever before. Is she taking advantage of the beautiful girls that she is mentoring? After a girl commits suicide, people start accusing Tár of manipulating and dominating her disciples. And slowly but surely, she starts losing support, and her entire career seems about to fall apart. In Tár, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) reminds us why she is still one of the greatest actresses of her generation, with an unforgettable and intense performance (it’s infuriating to see that she didn’t win an Oscar a couple of months ago, despite the fact that she deserved it more than anyone else). Captivating, tense, thought-provoking and audacious, Tár is exactly the kind of film that we all need to watch, especially in times in which power and popularity seem to be so intricately connected. In my top 5 of the best 2022 films. 100% recommended. 

I must say the first Black Panther movie didn’t impress me much, and I almost skip the sequel, but Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) turned out to be better than expected. This might be the first superhero movie in which they have to deal with the death of the protagonist, in this case Black Panther. So here we get to see what happens after, and how Wakanda tries to survive as a nation while being attacked by Namor. In the cinematic universe, Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta, isn’t the king of Atlantis, but I still enjoyed his new origin. Letitia Wright has to become the new Black Panther to honor the memory of her brother, while Angela Bassett must mourn the loss of her son. The cast includes Ryan Coogler, Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld). 

Pablo Larraín directs Spencer (2021), a biopic that revolves around the life of Diana Spencer, AKA Lady Di, the princess of Wales, played by Kristen Stewart (Equals) in what might very well be the best performance of her career. Princess Diana goes to Sandringham Palace to spend Christmas with her estranged husband prince Charles, her children, prince William and prince Harry and the Queen herself. Family tensions, rumors, backstabbing, plays of power and attempts of manipulation are part of every day’s routine, as the conflicted princess Diana tries to navigate the most turbulent holidays of her life. After watching the first 5 seasons of The Crown (one of the best series ever) I’m officially obsessed with the Royal British family so Spencer immediately captured my attention. The cast includes Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Jack Farthing. This one is on my list of the best 10 2021 films!

As I just mentioned, The Crown quickly became one of my favorite series, and most of the writing is by Peter Morgan, who also writes The Queen (2006), directed by Stephen Frears. The concept is absolutely innovative: what happens during the secret audiences between the Queen of England and her prime ministers? The Queen is wonderfully portrayed by dame Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold), who won an Oscar as best actress for her performance. It’s 1997 and princess Diana has died in a car accident, beloved by the whole world, the death of the people’s princess takes a toll on the British royal family, especially since, stubborn as they are and faithful to their traditions, they decide to remain isolated in Balmoral Castle instead of publicly acknowledging their feelings toward the death of the princess. Michael Sheen is prime minister Tony Blair, a man who does everything he can to counsel and guide the Queen through a complicated mourning period. The cast includes James Cromwell, Alex Jennings (who is also a royal in The Crown) and Sylvia Syms. I had already watched this one before, but I loved it even more watching it a second time. The majestic behavior of the Queen, the way feelings are repressed or hidden and the political intrigues behind the funeral of the most beloved princess are portrayed elegantly and eloquently, reconfiguring our understanding of royalty. Truly outstanding.

En abril tuve la oportunidad de viajar a la soleada Santa Bárbara, pero también tuve tiempo de ver producciones recientes como Boston Strangler (2023), de Matt Ruskin, un thriller histórico en el que dos valientes reporteras intentan descubrir el misterio del Estrangulador de Boston Strangler, un asesino en serie que estranguló a numerosas mujeres en los 60s. Keira Knightley es una esposa y madre que quiere desesperadamente convertirse en periodista de investigación, aunque todos los trabajos que recibe están relacionados con la moda, hasta que convence a Chris Cooper, el editor del Boston Record America, para que le permita investigar una serie de recientes homicidios. Después de encontrar con éxito elementos en común en los asesinatos por estrangulamiento, la protagonista es ayudada por Carrie Coon, otra periodista. Juntas deben enfrentar el sexismo y la negligencia de la policía de Boston, mientras informan sobre un peligroso asesino en serie. Ruskin hace un buen trabajo en términos de reconstrucción histórica y crea personajes convincentes.

Triangle of Sadness (2022), escrita y dirigida por Ruben Östlund, es una sátira incendiaria que me hizo reír a carcajadas pero también me mantuvo en vilo. Harris Dickinson y Charlbi Dean son la pareja ideal, ambos supermodelos muy atractivos e influencers muy populares que viajan en un lujoso crucero junto a gente rica. Lo que en un principio parece ser una crítica a la superficialidad, a la belleza exterior y a la fama que se obtiene al publicar las fotos apropiadas en las redes sociales, resulta ser un análisis muy complejo sobre la naturaleza de la riqueza y las diferencias socioeconómicas. Woody Harrelson es el capitán alcohólico a cargo del barco, y Vicki Berlin la fría y eficiente oficial que mantiene todo en orden y trata constantemente de satisfacer los extravagantes deseos de su acaudalada clientela. Sin embargo, cuando llega el desastre, el orden se invierte y, de repente, los súper ricos necesitarán las habilidades de supervivencia de la mujer que solía limpiar sus retretes. Irreverente, brillante y extraordinariamente divertida, Triangle of Sadness es una de las mejores películas del 2022 y una de las que sin duda merecía más premios. La recomiendo totalmente.

Todd Field escribe y dirige Tár (2022), una película notable que trata sobre la naturaleza del poder. Cate Blanchett es Lydia Tár, una famosa y talentosa compositora lesbiana, parte de un grupo muy exclusivo de personas capaces de lograr el EGOT (todos los premios importantes, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar y Tony). Parece imparable, en la cima del mundo, llena de nuevos proyectos. Y de repente, una simple acusación comienza a descarrilar su vida, demostrando que la cultura de la cancelación prevalece ahora más que nunca. ¿Se está aprovechando de las hermosas chicas a las que asesora? Después de que una chica se suicida, la gente comienza a acusar a Tár de manipular y dominar a sus discípulas. Y de manera lenta pero segura, comienza a perder apoyo y toda su carrera parece estar a punto de desmoronarse. En Tár, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) nos recuerda por qué sigue siendo una de las más grandes actrices de su generación, con una inolvidable e intensa interpretación (es indignante ver que no ganó un Oscar hace un par de meses, a pesar de que lo merecía más que nadie). Cautivadora, tensa, estimulante y audaz, Tár es exactamente el tipo de película que todos necesitamos ver, especialmente en épocas en los que el poder y la popularidad parecen conectarse tan intrincadamente. En mi top 5 de las mejores películas del 2022. 100% recomendable.

Después de ver las primeras 5 temporadas de The Crown (una de las mejores series de la historia), estoy oficialmente obsesionado con la familia real británica, por lo que Spencer captó mi atención de inmediato. El majestuoso comportamiento de la Reina, la forma en que se reprimen u ocultan los sentimientos y las intrigas políticas detrás del funeral de la princesa más querida se retratan con elegancia y elocuencia, reconfigurando nuestra comprensión de la realeza. Verdaderamente sobresaliente.
