February comic books / cómics de febrero

All good things must come to an end”, and in February, after 6 outstanding years, “The Unwritten” comes to an end. I’m glad to say I was there at the beginning, in July 2009, when I bought the first issue. I’ve been a fan of Carey’s series ever since. The last issue of “The Unwritten” is my favorite comic of the month. I also read the conclusion of “MPH”, Millar’s miniseries (and I’ll review it on April). The final chapter of Olympus in Moore’s “Miracleman” was absolutely brilliant. But of course after so many endings there are also new beginnings, in fact, the first issue of Morrison’s “Nameless” was surprisingly good. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

Todo lo bueno debe terminar”, y en febrero, después de 6 soberbios años, “The Unwritten”  llega a su fin. Me alegra decir que estuve allí al principio, en julio de 2009, cuando compré el primer ejemplar. He sido fan del título de Carey desde entonces. El último número de “The Unwritten” es mi cómic favorito del mes. También leí la conclusión de “MPH”, la miniserie de Millar (que será reseñada en abril). El capítulo final de Olimpo, en el Miracleman de Moore fue realmente brillante. Pero, desde luego, después de tantos finales también hay nuevos comienzos, de hecho, el primer número de “Nameless” de Morrison fue sorprendentemente bueno. December Comic Books / cómics de diciembre

December was a pretty good month for comics. Sandman Overture had the best art I’ve seen in months. I can finally binge read Punk Rock Jesus. The next issue of The Unwritten will be the last one and I’m sure it’ll be amazing. Busiek’s The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw fulfills my expectations. And I really enjoyed the beginning of the new arc of The Wicked + The Divine. However, if I had to choose the best comic of the month I wouldn’t have to think twice: Alan Moore’s Crossed Plus One Hundred # 1. Extraordinary! And now, without further ado, here are December comics as per solicitations:

CROSSED PLUS 100 #1 (MR)

Diciembre fue un mes bastante buenos para los cómics. Sandman Overture tiene el mejor arte que he visto en meses. Finalmente puedo leer de una sola sentada Punk Rock Jesus. El próximo número de The Unwritten será el último, y estoy seguro que será asombroso. The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw de Busiek cumplió mis expectativas. Y realmente disfruté el comienzo del nuevo arco de The Wicked + The Divine. Sin embargo, si tuviese que elegir el mejor cómic del mes no tendría que pensarlo dos veces: Crossed Plus One Hundred # 1 de Alan Moore. ¡Extraordinario! Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de diciembre: 

CROSSED PLUS 100 #1 (MR)
100 años en el futuro, Moore ha creado un nuevo mundo y una historia con una asombrosa atención hacia los detalles; examinando cómo las civilizaciones se reconstruyen y cómo las generaciones maduran, Moore teje un rico tapiz de una humanidad que evoluciona en las condiciones más adversas. El acto de Fausto ha concluido. Bienvenidos a Fan-demonio, el segundo arco argumental que empieza de manera tradicional (es decir, con un chiste ridículo). Diríamos algo así como “nada volverá a ser igual”, pero si lo pensáis, se puede decir eso sobre cualquier cosa incluso una historia de cómic.

Happy # 4 - Grant Morrison & Darick Robertson


Imaginary friends have a well-defined origin. Just like certain toys that function as transitional objects, an imaginary friend often serves a similar purpose. Happy, the blue horse, also personifies transition. For starters, Happy is the last remnant of Hailey’s childhood naiveté, but this cartoonish pet is also the motivation behind Nick’s transition. His characteristic cynicism and cruelty are slowly changing into commitment and responsibility.

The final confrontation between Nick and the pedophilic Santa Claus is quite brutal. In many ways, Nick Sax has been a character doomed since the opening frames of this miniseries. He’s a sick man, with a heart condition and someone who has been wounded and hospitalized more often than he would care to admit. Now, using his last energies, he does everything he can to preserve the lives –and innocence– of the captured children.

This final issue has some truly thought-provoking moments: the confrontation between Nick and a depraved priest, whose job description, as Morrison brilliantly sums up, is to get in touch with something that doesn’t exist (and isn’t that the job of all priests in the world?). One of the best scenes here also involves a game with inexistent creatures and projections of our fantasy. Happy, as an imaginary friend, travels as fast and as far as he can go, and he rounds up thousands of imaginary friends from children all over the globe. And it’s thanks to the arrival of Happy’s reinforcements that Nick is able to finally kill Santa Claus.

The ending of “Happy”, however, isn’t precisely about happiness. On the contrary, it’s quite sad, but it also makes perfect sense with the premises established since the opening chapter. Once again, Darick Robertson creates some truly exquisite art. From the great “Santa Claus on drugs” panel to the marvelous double page spread in which Happy and the cavalry surround Santa Claus. If you have been slightly unsatisfied with Morrison’s recent output from DC, then you must read “Happy”, it will restore your faith in the Scottish writer. I guarantee it.

Nick Sax

Los amigos imaginarios tienen un origen bien definido. Al igual que ciertos juguetes que funcionan como objetos transicionales, un amigo imaginario a menudo desempeña un propósito similar. Happy, el caballo azul, también personifica la transición. Para empezar, Happy es el último remanente de la inocencia infantil de Hailey, pero esta caricaturesca mascota es también lo que motiva la transición de Nick. Su cinismo característico y su crueldad están cambiando lentamente en compromiso y responsabilidad.

La confrontación final entre Nick y el Papa Noel pedófilo es bastante brutal. Desde las secuencias iniciales de esta miniserie, Nick Sax ha sido un personaje condenado. Es un hombre enfermo, con problemas cardiacos y alguien que ha sido herido y hospitalizado más de la cuenta. Ahora, usando sus últimas energías, hace todo lo que puede para preservar las vidas -y la inocencia- de los niños capturados.

Este número final tiene algunos momentos que nos invitan a la reflexión: la confrontación entre Nick y un cura depravado, su trabajo es descrito por Morrison con lucidez, se trata de ponerse en contacto con algo que no existe (¿y no es ese el trabajo de todos los curas del mundo?). Una de las mejores escenas involucra un juego con criaturas inexistentes y proyecciones de nuestra fantasía. Happy, al ser un amigo imaginario, viaja tan rápido y tan lejos como puede, y recluta a miles de amigos imaginarios de niños de todo el orbe. Y es gracias a la llegada de los refuerzos de Happy que Nick es capaz de matar, por fin, a Papa Noel.

El final de “Happy”, sin embargo, no es precisamente feliz. Por el contrario, es bastante triste, pero es coherente con las premisas establecidas desde el capítulo inicial. Una vez más, Darick Robertson crea un arte realmente exquisito. Desde el gran "Papa Noel en drogas" hasta la maravillosa página doble en la que Happy y la caballería rodean a Papa Noel. Si han estado ligeramente insatisfechos con la producción reciente de Morrison para DC, entonces deben leer “Happy”, restaurará vuestra fe en el escritor escocés. Garantizado.

BRAT PACK

Batman and Robin are the ultimate gay fantasy said a whacky shrink a few decades ago. And with those few words he became probably the most well-known psychiatrist in 1950s America. And thus the censorship era begun, and comic book publishers had to comply with a set of guidelines not very different from the Hays Code that ruled cinematographic productions.


The “Approved by the Comic Code Authority” seal remained well into the first decade of the 21st century, and in many ways will remain if only as a ghostly residue that could withhold creativity. Decades of control, decent guidelines and moral correctness cannot be forgotten overnight. American comic books, for better or for worse, will bear the mark of the code, but unlike branded cattle, this is a mark imprinted heavily upon the minds of creators and readers alike. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, after all, Jacques Derrida pointed out not too long ago that social structure relies deeply on certain marks, inscriptions or imprints that we can trace back in order to better understand social structures.


But, what happens when the “ultimate gay fantasy” is taken to the limits? What happens when the ambiguous interaction between a caped crusader and a young sidekick is reinterpreted for a more adult audience? The result is Rick Veitch’s shocking Brat Pack. Plagued with references to the comic industry, but moreover with parodies of well-established superheroes, the Brat Pack is a 160 page graphic novel divided into 5 chapters.


Sometimes it’s all about the media. That’s made clear in the first pages, with the host of a popular radio show named Neal Dennis (let’s remember that Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams did one of the most famous runs on Batman) who will be later mirrored by Gay Neilman (an obvious reference to British comic book author Neil Gaiman). Readers can easily identify who is the reference for certain characters. But what’s going on with the media throughout all this? Paraphrasing Jacques Lacan I could point out that the gaze of the other defines us, in many ways, some more literals than others, we “make ourselves seen” to the other because we need to. Talking about celebrities, it all becomes clear, they demand attention and without high ratings (id est, the gaze of the other) they’re nothing. Exactly the same thing happens with the heroes’ sidekicks, their existence is determined by the fierce gaze of the public. That’s why, in another clever homage, the final fate of these sidekicks will be determined by the audience of the radio show, people call in and vote, just like they did in real life to determine if Robin (Jason Todd) would either live or die in the famous Batman saga “Death in the Family”.


In the second chapter the heroes are desperately looking for replacements. New flesh. It’s the Midnight Mink (the caped crusader with a cool car and a big mansion that parodies Batman) who’s especially eager to find a new young boy, “And my Chippy? Did you find the right type? You know what I like” says to the priest who has, for a long time, recruited naïve kids for undisclosed purposes. It’s then that the reader witnesses the lives of three boys and a girl, in a masterfully executed narrative that intercrosses their perspectives while comparing their backgrounds and personalities.


The training of these youngsters takes place in the third chapter. And when the heroes take the kids under their wings, the reader comes close to a different model of super-hero: from the Midnight Mink’s promiscuous attitude and a certain keenness for nudity, to the repulsive and decaying female body behind Moon Mistress’s costume, to the alcoholism and recklessness of King Rad, to the sexual impotence and bigotry of Judge Jury.


In the penultimate chapters, the sidekicks must face menaces no normal hero would even imagine. Chippy is constantly accused of being sodomized by Midnight Mink, Moon Mistress’s ally is about to be raped by a bunch of hooligans, King Rad’s ward falls deeply into alcoholism and Kid Vicious follows the steps of Judge Jury trying to put in practice racial cleansing.


In the final episode, a year has passed by, and the once innocent and pure children are now corrupted souls that have been either physically or mentally abused by their tutors. Just like it was hinted at the beginning, one’s greatest desire is to be the object of desire of the other, and the young sidekicks have been victimized precisely for being so quickly objectified, thus achieving great success in being desired and most coveted by their masters / heroes. But just like in Hegel's Master-Slave Dialectic one cannot exist without the other, and the adult heroes cannot survive without the Lacanian gaze of the other, which is why, when the sidekicks risk their lives for good, they get worried. This equation, like any other, can no longer exist if one of the items is untimely removed.

En la década del 50 un psiquiatra norteamericano se hizo famoso al acusar a Batman y Robin de ser el símbolo de las fantasías homosexuales reprimidas. El público, e incluso el senado, concluyó que esas perversas publicaciones conocidas como comic books eran demasiado peligrosas para los niños, y así empezó la Edad de la Censura.

Luego de muchas décadas, Rick Veitch decidió llevar esta fantasía gay al extremo para un público adulto. El resultado fue la extraordinaria serie BRAT PACKS, que explora la relación ambigua entre dos personajes que parodian a Batman y Robin.
