Buscando a Pizarro - Marcel Velaochaga (ICPNA)
Aunque no voy con mucha frecuencia a la Galería Germán Krüger Espantoso, ubicada en el ICPNA de Miraflores, en el mes de marzo tuve la oportunidad de contemplar la extraordinaria muestra de Marcel Velaochaga “Buscando a Pizarro”. Lo que más me agrada de esta propuesta es la capacidad del artista para rearticular y reinterpretar la clásica estatua ecuestre de Pizarro (la misma que, por motivos de su recolocación, causó tantas controversias hace una década, y que ha inspirado innumerables adaptaciones, entre ellas las pinturas de Daniel Hernández, inspiración directa de Velaochaga).
Velaochaga destaca no solamente por su dominio del acrílico, sino también por sus impactantes imágenes del conquistador del Perú. Todos las instancias de Pizarro están astutamente resemantizadas y son ricas en ironía, y a la vez invitan a la reflexión. Según Carlos Trivelli, curador de la muestra “el artista genera un lenguaje visual en el que puede hacer dialogar a imágenes de distintos géneros y épocas […] En esta danza de íconos, Pizarro gira y gira para convertirse en emblema de conquista y violencia en distintos escenarios y, con él, los otros íconos también se transforman”.
A lo largo del mes, no obstante, también hubo otras muestras que merecen nuestra atención. La Galería Yvonne Sanguineti presentó “Ploff” de Franco Vella, exposición bastante lúdica que convierte a cada cuadro en una viñeta, haciendo partícipe al espectador de una secuencia estupendamente realizada por el pincel del artista.
En la Galería L’imaginaire de la Alianza Francesa de Miraflores pudimos ver “Picaelatura” de Eric Decastro. Estos son cuadros llenos de energía y expresividad, combinando diversas vertientes artísticas, desde el abstraccionismo puro hasta las técnicas empleadas por Jackson Pollock.

Superman: Secret Identity - Kurt Busiek & Stuart Immonen
Superheroes are the backbone of the American comic industry. Everyone knows that. But it seems to me as if, sometimes, people forget how it all begun. It was 1939, when Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster –two high school students at the time– created the first and most famous superhero of all times: Superman. Through the years, Superman was turned into a successful franchise, spawning movies, cartoons, TV series, toys, computer games, apparel and every piece of merchandising DC’s marketing department could think of… and then some more.
So today, 77 years after Action Comics # 1 hit the stands, for most people, Superman is an icon of pop culture instead of a comic book character, and many have only heard about him thanks to the abundant filmic or animated adaptations. So it doesn’t matter if you haven’t read a comic book in your life, you still know that Superman flies and that his secret identity is Clark Kent.
Over a decade ago, writer Kurt Busiek decided to reverse the classic approach towards the Man of Steel. In our world Superman is a trademark, a profitable piece of intellectual property, and a fictional hero everyone is familiar with. So Busiek started a clever and very original project about a kid from Kansas that lives in the real world, his last name is Kent and, evidently, his parents thought it would be a great idea to name him Clark. Clark Kent. Of course, with a name like that he is constantly ridiculed and even bullied by his classmates. And he simply recoils, isolating himself, experiencing the insecurity and frustration that is so typical at that age. However, Busiek’s compelling plot gains even more complexity by the metafictional game that takes place since the very beginning.
In his foreword, Busiek explained that the genesis of Superman: Secret Identity (a 4-issue miniseries published from January to April, 2004) was DC Comics Presents # 87 (written by Elliot S. Maggin, penciled by Curt Swan and edited by Julius Schwartz), a standalone adventure about Superboy from Earth Prime. This particular issue would persuade Busiek to reflect upon the foundations of superhero comics: “people think of the super-hero genre as inherently adolescent, all about a youngster’s wish-fulfillment dreams of power, of being able to do everything he couldn’t as a powerless, marginalized child. And nowhere was this more evident than in Superman. Clark Kent was the shy adolescent (or stand-in for the same), seen as meek and spineless, unattractive to Lois Lane, his romantic avatar, and incapable of winning respect. But as fast as a teenager’s voice cracks, he could become the über-adult, Superman, powerful, respected, the target of Lois’s romantic dreams, able to literally move mountains and famous the world over. It was the adolescent transformation from boy to man writ large”.
Every reader in the world can relate to that, after all, I don’t think growing up is easy, regardless of where or when we were born. Busiek’s first chapter is solely focused on Clark Kent’s adolescence. One day, completely out of the blue, the boy realizes he can fly. And in addition to defying gravity, he also has super-strength, super-hearing, invulnerability and even x-rays vision (which, of course, he uses to see girls naked at school).
At first, there is only the sheer emotion and happiness of a boy discovering he can do things that no man or woman on Earth could do. But then, as it happens with all teens, there is mostly uncertainty: what should he do with his powers? Should he keep them as a secret or reveal himself to the public? And how can he do things that are only possible in comics? It’s completely normal for Clark to have all these questions and doubts. Busiek emphasizes “the stumbling self-discovery of adolescence” although in this case Clark’s superpowers are not the only elements that help define his identity. “At every stage in life, there’s a difference between how the world sees us and who we think we are, who our secret self is, down deep inside”, declares Busiek. And that will be Clark’s greatest struggle.
With his extraordinary abilities, Clark feels optimistic: “the best part, I think, was being free. Being alone, being able to be myself -- even if I didn’t know who that was, really”. Unlike the classic Superman, Clark isn’t really a superhero and he certainly doesn’t have all the answers, not even half of them. So there are a lot of things he still needs to figure out. He could use his powers to become rich, and that surely sounds tempting. But in the end he comes to the conclusion that helping others is what gives him the greatest satisfaction, and that’s an activity he carries out in secret, at night, or moving at super-speed so no one will see him. It’s during this process that Clark starts to open up, he feels confident enough to communicate with other people, and he finally manages to have something he never had before: friends.
Nevertheless, Busiek didn’t want to stop there. Most guys in the comic industry stay within the confines of the genre, sticking to the adolescent male fantasies and forgetting that other possibilities exist. So for Busiek it was necessary to move on, to see what happens with the teenager as time goes on; so we get to see Clark becoming an adult, getting married and having children, and then even grandchildren. In doing that, Busiek subverts one of the basic rules of superhero comics: the hero must remain more or less static, he must never age and no significant changes can take place in his life. “What makes the story work is the narration. Busiek does what he does best, and that’s to bring credibility to an incredible situation. The plotting achieves it to some extent, but it’s Clark’s voice that really drives home the down-to-earth quality of the story. Clark’s character is well-realized, and we can hear the sadness, anger and loneliness in his ‘voice’”
One of my favorite sequences takes place when Clark is already an adult. He meets Lois Chaudhari and he quickly falls in love with this attractive and very intelligent woman of Indian parents. But he must decide whether to share his secret with her or not. In a specially moving and poetic page, Clark admits that “Life is risk. Love is risk”, and he tells her all about his powers. In this way, the protagonist reaches full maturity. If we read old Superman comics from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s we will find that indecision is a constant aspect of Superman’s intimate life, he’s always unsure about sharing his secret with Lois Lane, effectively sabotaging any possibility of having the rewards of an adult life; the Man of Steel is an eternal bachelor (like most superheroes…), unable to have a healthy loving relationship with anyone.
In Busiek’s proposal, Superman’s greatest adversary isn’t an eccentric supervillain or invaders from another planet, but rather the government of the United States. As much as he has tried to keep in the shadows, soon the government learns about the daring exploits of this superhuman. And before Clark realizes it, he’s deceived, ambushed and imprisoned. In one of the darkest and most sinister scenes, Clark wakes up in a laboratory. He understands he must do everything it takes to survive, and he barely manages to escape, but not before being shocked by a large collection of lifeless bodies, victims of previous experiments. From that moment on, he becomes more careful than ever, but throughout the decades he continues to be hunted by the government until he finds a way to put an end to it.
It’s actually quite refreshing to see a writer sharing with us the entire life of a character. And as Clark gets older, he experiences the same problems that old men do. He loses abilities, his strength is reduced, his eyesight is no longer perfect, and slowly but surely, he understands it’s about time to retire. In 200 vibrant pages, Busiek introduces many fascinating concepts, and he turns an already appealing premise into a brilliant story. His elegant prose, his extraordinary narrative resources and his unparalleled imagination captivate the reader from the get to.
I would be remiss if I don’t mention the importance of art in this miniseries. Nowadays, I’ve seen many failed attempts from pencilers that skip the inking process to get the work done faster. However, Stuart Immonen decided to scan his penciled pages and color them directly “using a palette inspired by 1950s advertising art” and, as Busiek clarifies, “the result was striking, unusual, and rich in mood and atmosphere, enhancing the emotion of the character stuff and the splendor of the fantasy”. What I can tell, from my own experience, is that sometimes penciled drawings have a unique expressiveness, a certain looseness, a special texture that is somehow more free than the tidy and crisp final version, once it all gets inked. Fortunately, Immonen preserves the quality of his pencils and complements his magnificent art with some of the best coloring I’ve seen from him (or any other professional colorist).
I must praise Immonen’s “ability to express emotions in the individual faces of the characters and the details he renders into them. Immonen also takes on the chore of coloring his own artwork and in doing so; fully controls the look of each page, thereby ensuring that his vision for the book is fulfilled. This combination produces what may be deemed as one of his best works ever”. In my opinion, Superman: Secret Identity is the pinnacle of Stuart Immonen’s artistic career and also one of the finest stories ever written by the talented Kurt Busiek. An unsung masterpiece, a hidden gem from DC Comics, this is the kind of work that reminds us why Superman matters to all of us.

Los superhéroes son la columna vertebral de la industria del cómic estadounidense. Todos sabemos eso. Pero me parece que, a veces, la gente olvida cómo empezó todo. En 1939 Jerry Siegel y Joe Shuster –dos estudiantes de secundaria en ese entonces– crearon al primer y más famoso superhéroe de todos los tiempos: Superman. A lo largo de los años, Superman se convirtió en una franquicia exitosa, y ha dado origen a películas, dibujos animados, series de televisión, juguetes, videojuegos, ropa y todos los productos de merchandising que podía concebir el departamento de marketing de DC.
Así que hoy, 77 años después de la publicación de Action Comics # 1, para la mayoría de la gente, Superman es un ícono de la cultura pop en lugar de un personaje de cómic, y muchos sólo han oído hablar de él gracias a las abundantes adaptaciones fílmicas o animadas. Clark Kent. Por supuesto, con un nombre como ese es constantemente ridiculizado e incluso agredido por sus compañeros de clase. Y Clark simplemente retrocede, aislándose, experimentando la inseguridad y la frustración tan típicas de esa edad. Sin embargo, el sorprendente argumento de Busiek se hace aún más complejo gracias al juego de metaficción que se plantea desde el comienzo.

Pero a la velocidad a la que cambia la voz de un adolescente, él podía convertirse en el ultra-adulto, Superman, poderoso, respetado, el objetivo de los sueños románticos de Lois, capaz literalmente de mover montañas y famoso en todo el mundo. Era la transformación adolescente, de niño a hombre en mayúsculas”.
Todos los lectores del mundo pueden identificarse con eso, después de todo, considero que crecer es difícil, independientemente de dónde o cuándo nacimos. El primer capítulo del Busiek se centra exclusivamente en la adolescencia de Clark Kent. Un día, inesperadamente, el muchacho se da cuenta de que puede volar. Es completamente normal que Clark tenga todas estas preguntas y dudas. Busiek hace hincapié en “el vacilante auto-descubrimiento de la adolescencia”, aunque en este caso los superpoderes de Clark no son los únicos elementos que ayudan a definir su identidad. “En cada etapa de la vida, hay una diferencia entre cómo el mundo nos ve y lo que nosotros pensamos que somos, quién es nuestro yo secreto, en lo más profundo, en nuestro interior”, declara Busiek. Y esa será la mayor lucha de Clark.
Con sus extraordinarias habilidades, Clark se siente optimista: “la mejor parte, creo, era ser libre. Estar solo, pudiendo ser yo mismo -- incluso si no sabía quién era yo de verdad”. A diferencia del Superman clásico, Clark no es realmente un superhéroe y ciertamente no tiene todas las respuestas, ni siquiera la mitad. Así que hay muchas cosas que todavía tiene que descifrar. Podría usar sus poderes para enriquecerse, algo que sin duda suena tentador. El amor es riesgo”, y él le cuenta todo acerca de sus poderes. De esta manera, el protagonista llega a su plena madurez. Si leemos cómics viejos de Superman de los 40s, 50s, 60s y 70s nos encontraremos con que la indecisión es un aspecto constante de la vida íntima de Superman, él siempre está inseguro a la hora de compartir su secreto con Lois Lane, saboteando efectivamente cualquier posibilidad de alcanzar los beneficios de una vida adulta; el Hombre de Acero es un eterno soltero (como la mayoría de los superhéroes...), incapaz de mantener una relación sana y amorosa.
En la propuesta de Busiek, el mayor adversario de Superman no es un supervillano excéntrico ni invasores de otro planeta, sino más bien el gobierno de los Estados Unidos. Por mucho que él ha intentado mantenerse en las sombras, pronto el gobierno se entera de sus hazañas sobrehumanas. Y antes de que Clark pueda darse cuenta, es engañado, emboscado y encarcelado. En una de las escenas más oscuras y siniestras, Clark se despierta en un laboratorio. Él entiende que tiene que hacer todo lo que haga falta para sobrevivir, y apenas logra escapar, pero no sin antes quedar impactado ante una gran colección de cadáveres, víctimas de experimentos anteriores. A partir de ese momento, se vuelve más cuidadoso que nunca, pero en décadas posteriores sigue siendo perseguido por el gobierno hasta que él encuentra una manera de ponerle fin a esta situación.
En realidad es bastante refrescante ver a un escritor compartiendo con nosotros la vida entera de un personaje. Y a medida que envejece, Clark experimenta los problemas y achaques más comunes. Pierde habilidades, su fuerza se reduce, su vista ya no es perfecta, y poco a poco, él entiende que es hora de jubilarse. En 200 vibrantes páginas, Busiek introduce muchos conceptos fascinantes, y convierte una premisa ya de por sí atrayente en una brillante historia. Su prosa elegante, sus extraordinarios recursos narrativos y su inigualable imaginación cautivan al lector desde el inicio.
Sería negligente de mi parte no mencionar la importancia del arte en esta miniserie. En la actualidad, he visto muchos intentos fallidos de dibujantes que se saltan el proceso del entintado para hacer el trabajo más rápido. Sin embargo, Stuart Immonen decidió escanear sus páginas a lápiz y colorearlas directamente “usando una paleta inspirada en el arte publicitario de 1950” y, como aclara Busiek, “el resultado fue sorprendente, inusual, enriqueciendo el estado de ánimo y la atmósfera, aumentando la emoción propia del personaje y el esplendor de la fantasía”. Lo que puedo señalar, basándome en mi propia experiencia, es que a veces los dibujos a lápiz tienen una expresividad única, una cierta soltura, una textura especial que es de alguna manera más libre que la versión final, tan ordenada y nítida luego del entintado. Afortunadamente, Immonen preserva la calidad de sus lápices y complementa su magnífico arte con algunos de los mejores coloreados que he visto (él es tan bueno o mejor que cualquier otro colorista profesional).
Debo alabar “la capacidad de Immonen para expresar emociones en las caras individuales de los personajes y los detalles que moldea en ellos. Immonen también asume la tarea de colorear su propia obra y, al hacerlo, controla totalmente el aspecto de cada página, lo que garantiza que se cumpla su visión del libro. Esta combinación produce lo que puede ser considerado como una de sus mejores obras”. En mi opinión, “Superman: Identidad Secreta” es el pináculo de la carrera artística de Stuart Immonen y también una de las mejores historias escritas por el talentoso Kurt Busiek. Una obra maestra poco reconocida, una joya escondida de DC Comics, este es el tipo de trabajo que nos recuerda por qué Superman es tan relevante para todos nosotros.

An unsung masterpiece, a hidden gem from DC Comics, this is the kind of work that reminds us why Superman matters to all of us.

Los superhéroes son la columna vertebral de la industria del cómic estadounidense. Todos sabemos eso. Pero me parece que, a veces, la gente olvida cómo empezó todo. En 1939 Jerry Siegel y Joe Shuster –dos estudiantes de secundaria en ese entonces– crearon al primer y más famoso superhéroe de todos los tiempos: Superman. A lo largo de los años, Superman se convirtió en una franquicia exitosa, y ha dado origen a películas, dibujos animados, series de televisión, juguetes, videojuegos, ropa y todos los productos de merchandising que podía concebir el departamento de marketing de DC.

Hace más de una década, el escritor Kurt Busiek decidió darle la vuelta al enfoque clásico del Hombre de Acero. En nuestro mundo Superman es una marca registrada, una propiedad intelectual muy rentable, y un héroe de ficción que todo el mundo conoce. Así que Busiek inició un proyecto inteligente y muy original sobre un chiquillo de Kansas que vive en el mundo real, su apellido es Kent y, evidentemente, sus padres pensaron que sería una gran idea darle el nombre de Clark. Clark Kent. Por supuesto, con un nombre como ese es constantemente ridiculizado e incluso agredido por sus compañeros de clase. Y Clark simplemente retrocede, aislándose, experimentando la inseguridad y la frustración tan típicas de esa edad. Sin embargo, el sorprendente argumento de Busiek se hace aún más complejo gracias al juego de metaficción que se plantea desde el comienzo.
En su prólogo, Busiek explicó que la génesis de “Superman: Secret Identity” (una miniserie de 4 números publicados entre enero y abril del 2004) fue DC Comics Presents # 87 (con guión de Elliot S. Maggin, dibujos de Curt Swan; y Julius Schwartz como editor), una aventura autoconclusiva sobre el Superboy de Tierra Prima. Este número en particular lograría que Busiek reflexionase sobre los fundamentos del cómic superheroico: “la gente piensa que el género de súper-héroes es inherentemente adolescente, todo es sobre los deseos y los sueños de poder de los muchachos, se trata de ser capaz de hacer todo lo que no se pudo cuando se era un chiquillo marginado e impotente. Y en ninguna parte esto se hizo más evidente que en Superman. Clark Kent era el adolescente tímido (o fingía serlo), visto como alguien dócil y sin valor, poco atractivo para Lois Lane, su interés romántico, e incapaz de ser respetado. Pero a la velocidad a la que cambia la voz de un adolescente, él podía convertirse en el ultra-adulto, Superman, poderoso, respetado, el objetivo de los sueños románticos de Lois, capaz literalmente de mover montañas y famoso en todo el mundo. Era la transformación adolescente, de niño a hombre en mayúsculas”.

En un primer momento, sólo hay emoción pura y la felicidad de un chico que ha descubierto que puede hacer cosas que ningún hombre o mujer en la Tierra podría hacer. Pero entonces, como ocurre con todos los adolescentes, llega la incertidumbre: ¿qué debe hacer con sus poderes? ¿Debería mantenerlos en secreto o revelarlos públicamente? ¿Cómo puede hacer cosas que sólo son posibles en los cómics? Es completamente normal que Clark tenga todas estas preguntas y dudas. Busiek hace hincapié en “el vacilante auto-descubrimiento de la adolescencia”, aunque en este caso los superpoderes de Clark no son los únicos elementos que ayudan a definir su identidad. “En cada etapa de la vida, hay una diferencia entre cómo el mundo nos ve y lo que nosotros pensamos que somos, quién es nuestro yo secreto, en lo más profundo, en nuestro interior”, declara Busiek. Y esa será la mayor lucha de Clark.
Con sus extraordinarias habilidades, Clark se siente optimista: “la mejor parte, creo, era ser libre. Estar solo, pudiendo ser yo mismo -- incluso si no sabía quién era yo de verdad”. A diferencia del Superman clásico, Clark no es realmente un superhéroe y ciertamente no tiene todas las respuestas, ni siquiera la mitad. Así que hay muchas cosas que todavía tiene que descifrar. Podría usar sus poderes para enriquecerse, algo que sin duda suena tentador. Pero al final él llega a la conclusión de que ayudar a los demás es lo que le da la mayor satisfacción, y esa es una actividad que lleva a cabo en secreto, por la noche, o moviéndose a súper velocidad para que nadie lo vea. Al hacer esto, Busiek subvierte una de las reglas básicas de los cómics de superhéroes: el héroe debe mantenerse más o menos estático, nunca debe envejecer y no debe haber cambios significativos en su vida. “Lo que hace que la historia funcione es la narración. Busiek hace lo que mejor sabe hacer, y eso es darle credibilidad a una situación increíble. En la propuesta de Busiek, el mayor adversario de Superman no es un supervillano excéntrico ni invasores de otro planeta, sino más bien el gobierno de los Estados Unidos. Por mucho que él ha intentado mantenerse en las sombras, pronto el gobierno se entera de sus hazañas sobrehumanas. Y antes de que Clark pueda darse cuenta, es engañado, emboscado y encarcelado. En una de las escenas más oscuras y siniestras, Clark se despierta en un laboratorio. Él entiende que tiene que hacer todo lo que haga falta para sobrevivir, y apenas logra escapar, pero no sin antes quedar impactado ante una gran colección de cadáveres, víctimas de experimentos anteriores. A partir de ese momento, se vuelve más cuidadoso que nunca, pero en décadas posteriores sigue siendo perseguido por el gobierno hasta que él encuentra una manera de ponerle fin a esta situación.

En realidad es bastante refrescante ver a un escritor compartiendo con nosotros la vida entera de un personaje. Y a medida que envejece, Clark experimenta los problemas y achaques más comunes. Pierde habilidades, su fuerza se reduce, su vista ya no es perfecta, y poco a poco, él entiende que es hora de jubilarse. En 200 vibrantes páginas, Busiek introduce muchos conceptos fascinantes, y convierte una premisa ya de por sí atrayente en una brillante historia. Su prosa elegante, sus extraordinarios recursos narrativos y su inigualable imaginación cautivan al lector desde el inicio.
Sería negligente de mi parte no mencionar la importancia del arte en esta miniserie. En la actualidad, he visto muchos intentos fallidos de dibujantes que se saltan el proceso del entintado para hacer el trabajo más rápido. Sin embargo, Stuart Immonen decidió escanear sus páginas a lápiz y colorearlas directamente “usando una paleta inspirada en el arte publicitario de 1950” y, como aclara Busiek, “el resultado fue sorprendente, inusual, enriqueciendo el estado de ánimo y la atmósfera, aumentando la emoción propia del personaje y el esplendor de la fantasía”. Lo que puedo señalar, basándome en mi propia experiencia, es que a veces los dibujos a lápiz tienen una expresividad única, una cierta soltura, una textura especial que es de alguna manera más libre que la versión final, tan ordenada y nítida luego del entintado. Afortunadamente, Immonen preserva la calidad de sus lápices y complementa su magnífico arte con algunos de los mejores coloreados que he visto (él es tan bueno o mejor que cualquier otro colorista profesional).
Debo alabar “la capacidad de Immonen para expresar emociones en las caras individuales de los personajes y los detalles que moldea en ellos. Immonen también asume la tarea de colorear su propia obra y, al hacerlo, controla totalmente el aspecto de cada página, lo que garantiza que se cumpla su visión del libro. Esta combinación produce lo que puede ser considerado como una de sus mejores obras”. En mi opinión, “Superman: Identidad Secreta” es el pináculo de la carrera artística de Stuart Immonen y también una de las mejores historias escritas por el talentoso Kurt Busiek. Una obra maestra poco reconocida, una joya escondida de DC Comics, este es el tipo de trabajo que nos recuerda por qué Superman es tan relevante para todos nosotros.

Sandman Overture # 6 - Neil Gaiman & J.H. Williams III
I started reading The Sandman in 2008, many years after the series was originally published. I felt immediately fascinated by Neil Gaiman’s proposal as well as seduced by the oneiric realm of Morpheus, Dream of the Endless. So it was quite a surprise for me to find out, in 2013, that Gaiman would return to his most famous creation, in a 6-issue miniseries titled “Sandman Overture”.
I know one day I must write about The Sandman, in the same way that I must write about Watchmen and many other hugely relevant comics from that era. The good thing for me is that now that I’m done with the prequel I can jump straight ahead to Vertigo’s most renowned series. According to Gaiman “I decided that it would be really interesting to create a character who was Dream, who was the incarnation of the act of dreaming. He's one of a family of seven siblings, beginning with Destiny and Death and ending with Despair and Delirium. He is incredibly stiff, slightly pompous, rather lonely ... and obsessed by rules, and has very little sense of himself”. All these elements are present in “Sandman Overture”, and perhaps that’s why the magic is still there.
As we saw in previous issues, the entire universe is about to disappear. But Sandman has reunited 1,000 dreamers from every corner of the galaxy, aliens of every conceivable form and shape, creatures of all kinds, are ready to close their eyes and recreate the universe in their dreams. “Because it is the nature of dreams, and only of dreams, to define reality” explains Desire, and indeed, with the help of Delirium and after an incredible sacrifice, the cosmos is restored, the book of Destiny is re-written, Destruction disappears and Death no longer has to attend the infinite demise of entire worlds. The only one of the Endless that is unhappy with this outcome is Despair, as she can’t savor the misery and desolation of others anymore.
“If you read the whole of Sandman incredibly carefully, you would have learned, before Sandman #1, he was returning from a distant galaxy in triumph of a sort, tried beyond measure, exhausted beyond everything. But you never knew why”, affirms Gaiman. So it’s no wonder that the last page of Sandman Overture is the opening sequence of The Sandman # 1 (originally published in 1988).
I’m sure some readers out there are wondering why a 6-issue miniseries took almost 3 years to be completed and the answer is simple. J.H. Williams III’s exquisite art demanded months of preparation, months of thorough work, months of careful execution. All this effort is more than evident in the pages of Sandman Overture, here every panel is a like a piece of fine jewelry, an artistic delight that we should savor slowly. This final issue is as impressive as the others and perhaps even more so. It’s such a pleasure to look at this comic, to admire the absolutely imaginative panel structure, to be amazed at the creativity and talent of an artist that can combine multiple styles and a plethora of illustration techniques to achieve the most impressive results. The end of Sandman Overture is the beginning of The Sandman, and perhaps that means I should start planning on reviewing the entire series… because I am always fascinated by dreams, and like Neil Gaiman said once “A book is a dream that you hold in your hands”, and it’s so rewarding to hold such dreams.

Inmediatamente me sentí fascinado por la propuesta de Neil Gaiman, y seducido por el reino onírico de Morfeo, Sueño de los Eternos. Así que para mí fue una sorpresa averiguar, el 2013, que Gaiman volvería a su creación más famosa, en una miniserie de 6 ejemplares titulada “Sandman Overture”.
Sé que algún día tengo que escribir sobre “The Sandman”, de la misma manera que debo escribir sobre “Watchmen” y muchos otros cómics enormemente relevantes de aquella época. Lo bueno para mí es que ahora que he terminado con la precuela puedo aterrizar directamente en la serie más renombrada de vértigo. De acuerdo con Gaiman “decidí que sería realmente interesante crear un personaje que fuese Sueño, la encarnación del acto de soñar. Él es parte de una familia de siete hermanos, comenzando con Destino y Muerte y terminando con Desesperación y Delirio. Él es increíblemente rígido, ligeramente pomposo, bastante solitario... y obsesionado por las reglas, y con poco conocimiento de sí mismo”. Todos estos elementos están presentes en “Sandman Overture”, y tal vez es por eso que la magia sigue ahí.
Como vimos en números anteriores, todo el universo está a punto de desaparecer. Todo este esfuerzo es más que evidente en las páginas de “Sandman Overture”, aquí cada viñeta es una como una pieza de joyería fina, un deleite artístico que debemos saborear lentamente. Este último número es tan impresionante como los demás y tal vez aún más. Es un placer mirar este cómic, admirar la estructura absolutamente novedosa de las viñetas; y sorprenderse por la creatividad y el talento de un artista que capaz de combinar varios estilos y una gran cantidad de técnicas de ilustración para lograr los resultados más impresionantes. El fin de “Sandman Overture” es el comienzo de “The Sandman”, y tal vez eso significa que debería empezar a reseñar la serie original... porque siempre me han fascinado los sueños, tal como dijo Neil Gaiman alguna vez: “Un libro es un sueño que puedes sujetar con tus manos”, y es tan gratificante poder sujetar semejantes sueños.

February was such a good month for comics. I’m amazed by the high quality of Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer, which are quickly turning into my most eagerly-awaited monthly series. Millar is still firing on all cylinders with Huck and especially the second volume of Jupiter’s Circle. And Image has a couple of promising new series: Snowfall and Cry Havoc. However, once again my favorite comic of the month, and by quite a large margin, is Alan Moore’s Providence # 7. Can’t wait to start reviewing this series.
