In May I had the chance to watch new productions and rewatch old ones. Marc Forster directs A Man Called Otto (2022). After losing his wife, Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), a lonely man decides his life no longer has meaning and wants to put an end to it. Highly organized and methodic, he plans his suicide in detail, but he doesn’t expect the arrival of new neighbors, a couple that constantly knock on his door, interrupting his plans. The woman is Mexican and she slowly develops a peculiar friendship with her grumpy neighbor. Above all, what we see here isn’t so much a story about depression but rather about the possibility of reconnecting with those around us, even after suffering a great loss. Tom Hanks’ performance is great as usual, and the rest of cast is also quite good. I recommend it. 

The Devil All the Time (2020), directed by Antonio Campos, is a fascinating intergenerational saga based on Donald Ray Pollock’s novel. Everything starts with Bill Skarsgård (Himlen är oskyldigt blå), a man traumatized after WWII whose life falls apart when his wife’s cancer keeps getting worse. There are many memorable characters, like Harry Melling (The Pale Blue Eye) whose religious fanatism conceals his homicidal tendencies and Robert Pattinson (Cosmopolis), a young priest who decides to seduce and fuck as many underage girls as he can, the cast also includes Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War), Mia Wasikowska (Blackbird), etc., but the protagonist is Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home), a young man who must leave his adopted home and travel to the place where he was born, where the memories of his enraged father still haunt him; in this long road trip, he will run into a couple of serial killers that specialize in murdering young men after taking revealing pictures of them. All the stories are interconnected in a unique and captivating way, and thanks to Campos’ filmmaking skills, everything comes together in painful, shocking and also beautiful moments. This one is on my list of the best 10 films from 2020.  

Thor Freudenthal’s Words on Bathroom Walls (2020) is an interesting take on what it means to live with schizophrenia. Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete) is a charismatic teenager with an incredible talent for cooking, his dream is to become a chef one day, until suddenly, his plans come to an abrupt halt due to his first psychotic break. Forced to leave his high school and enroll in a different one, he tries to rebuild his life while deciding if he should take his medication or not. When he meets Taylor Russell (Bones and All) he falls in love with her, but dealing with first love and mental illness at the same time proves to be quite unmanageable. Freudenthal creates solid characters and dramatic situations, and takes enough risks so that we can imagine how life could be for someone suffering from schizophrenia; at the same time there’s a good balance between the darker and more uplifting moments. 

Based on the graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and directed by Sam Mendes, Road to Perdition (2002) is a fascinating story about a man who tries to protect his family, and fails. Tom Hanks (Bridge of Spies) is a hitman working for a powerful mafia boss in the 30s, no one suspects what he does for a living but he has provided his family with a life of comfort and abundance. Until his son secretly follows him one day and witnesses how his father and another hitman, Daniel Craig, kill people. Soon, the mafia boss decides to kill the entire family, and while the man and his son manage to escape, they must mourn the loss of everyone else. In a desperate journey through different towns and cities, they try to escape from an elite killer, Jude Law, and realize the only way for the persecution to end is to kill the mafia boss and everyone else involved. An extraordinary combination of violence and crime, and a unique view of the responsibility of a father and the expectations of a boy growing up in a world turned upside down. A hidden masterpiece from 2 decades ago. Definitely worth checking out. 

For many people, Steven Spielberg is the greatest American director, and I’m sure everyone has a list of his greatest films. My personal favorite is Catch Me If You Can (2002), a touching story about Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), a teenager who has a special talent for forgery, who starts defrauding airlines and banks with fraudulent checks, and Tom Hanks, the FBI agent who chases him for years until capturing him. But deep down, it’s also a story about friendship, about absent parental figures and about the ever elusive pursuit of happiness. Although at moments it might seem too far-fetched and exaggerated, this story is based on real life. The performance of Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks is absolutely amazing, and the interaction between them is so solid and convincing that we immediately identify with both, the astute forger and the law-abiding officer, none of them can exist without the other. There are dramatic and sad moments, but also absolutely hilarious moments, like life itself, there are always ups and downs, and it’s captivating to observe the evolution of the unique relationship between the criminal and the FBI agent. I especially like the ending, when Leonardo Di Caprio is taken out of jail and offered the opportunity to work for the FBI, in the fraud division. There is a moment when he must choose between staying behind a desk or running away, and Tom Hanks simply gives him the freedom to do what he wants. I had seen this one before, and now that I had the chance to watch it again I loved it just as much, or maybe even more. 

Robert Zemeckis really did accomplish something special with Cast Away (2000). Here Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) is a FedEx executive, a man respected for his timeliness and organizational skills, a man ready to spend his life next to the woman he loves, Helen Hunt, until his plane suffers and accident. Everyone dies except him, but now he’s stranded in a deserted island. With no one around, the protagonist must learn how to survive on his own, without technology  or even human company. There are no special threats, no dangerous animals, simply the solitude of a man who dreams for years about returning to the woman he loves. Being the only actor on screen for most of the movie is no easy task to pull off, and yet, Tom Hanks does it wonderfully, there’s so much intensity in his acting that no other actors are needed. I’ll always remember the ending, how after seemingly impossible odds, after risking his life, the protagonist manages to sail away and is rescued by a ship when he’s about to give up. Then he returns to the US, only to find out that the woman he loved, the one that kept him alive and going all this time, has moved on, she’s married and has children now. “You were the love of my life”, she says in tears, but it’s too late. And now, the protagonist has to start again.

En mayo tuve la oportunidad de ver nuevas producciones y volver a ver algunas no tan nuevas. Marc Forster dirige A Man Called Otto (2022). Después de perder a su esposa, Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), un hombre solitario decide que su vida ya no tiene sentido y quiere ponerle fin. Altamente organizado y metódico, planea su suicidio al detalle, pero no espera la llegada de nuevos vecinos, una pareja que llama constantemente a su puerta, interrumpiendo sus planes. La mujer es mexicana y poco a poco desarrolla una peculiar amistad con su vecino gruñón. Sobre todo, lo que vemos aquí no es tanto una historia sobre la depresión sino más bien sobre la posibilidad de reconectarnos con quienes nos rodean, incluso después de sufrir una gran pérdida. La actuación de Tom Hanks es excelente como siempre, y el resto del elenco también es bastante bueno. Lo recomiendo.

Todo comienza con Bill Skarsgård (Himlen är oskyldigt blå), un hombre traumatizado después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial cuya vida se desmorona cuando el cáncer de su esposa empeora. Hay muchos personajes memorables, como Harry Melling (The Pale Blue Eye) cuyo fanatismo religioso oculta sus tendencias homicidas y Robert Pattinson (Cosmopolis), un joven sacerdote que decide seducir y follar a tantas chicas menores de edad como pueda, el reparto también incluye a Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War), Mia Wasikowska (Blackbird),etc. Pero el protagonista es Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home), un joven que debe dejar su hogar adoptivo y viajar al lugar donde nació, donde los recuerdos de su colérico padre aún lo persiguen; En este largo viaje por carretera, se topará con un par de asesinos en serie que se especializan en asesinar a jóvenes después de tomarles fotos reveladoras. Todas las historias están interconectadas de una manera única y cautivadora, y gracias a la habilidad cinematográfica de Campos, todo se une en momentos dolorosos, impactantes y también hermosos. Está en mi lista de las 10 mejores películas de 2020.

Words on Bathroom Walls (2020), de Thor Freudenthal, es una interpretación interesante de lo que significa vivir con esquizofrenia. Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete)  es un adolescente carismático con un talento increíble para la cocina, su sueño es convertirse en chef algún día, hasta que de repente, sus planes se ven truncados debido a su primer brote psicótico. Obligado a dejar su escuela secundaria y matricularse en otra diferente, intenta rehacer su vida mientras decide si debe tomar su medicación o no. Cuando conoce a Taylor Russell (Bones and All), se enamora de ella, pero lidiar con el primer amor y la enfermedad mental al mismo tiempo resulta bastante inmanejable. Freudenthal crea personajes sólidos y situaciones dramáticas, y toma suficientes riesgos para que podamos imaginar cómo podría ser la vida de alguien que sufre de esquizofrenia; al mismo tiempo, hay un buen equilibrio entre los momentos más oscuros y los más edificantes.

Tom Hanks  (Bridge of Spies) es un asesino a sueldo que trabaja para un poderoso jefe de la mafia en los 30s, nadie sospecha a qué se dedica pero le ha brindado a su familia una vida llena de comodidad y abundancia. Hasta que su hijo lo sigue en secreto un día y es testigo de cómo su padre y otro sicario, Daniel Craig, matan gente. Pronto, el jefe de la mafia decide matar a toda la familia, y mientras el hombre y su hijo logran escapar, deben llorar la pérdida de todos los demás. En un viaje desesperado por diferentes pueblos y ciudades, intentan escapar de un asesino de élite, Jude Law, y se dan cuenta de que la única forma de acabar con la persecución es matar al jefe de la mafia y a todos los involucrados. Una combinación extraordinaria de violencia y crimen, y una visión única de la responsabilidad de un padre y las expectativas de un niño que crece en un mundo al revés. Una obra maestra oculta de hace 2 décadas. Definitivamente vale la pena echarle un vistazo.

Para muchas personas, Steven Spielberg es el mejor director estadounidense y estoy seguro de que todos tienen una lista de sus mejores películas. Mi favorita es Catch Me If You Can (2002), una conmovedora historia sobre Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), un adolescente con un talento especial para la falsificación, que comienza a estafar a aerolíneas y bancos con cheques fraudulentos, y Tom Hanks, el agente del FBI que lo persigue durante años hasta capturarlo. Pero en el fondo, también es una historia de amistad, de figuras paternas ausentes y de la siempre esquiva búsqueda de la felicidad. Aunque por momentos pueda parecer demasiado descabellada y exagerada, esta historia está basada en la vida real. La actuación de Leonardo DiCaprio y Tom Hanks es absolutamente asombrosa, y la interacción entre ellos es tan sólida y convincente que inmediatamente nos identificamos con ambos, el falsificador astuto y el oficial respetuoso de la ley, ninguno de ellos puede existir sin el otro. Hay momentos dramáticos y tristes, pero también momentos absolutamente hilarantes, como la vida misma, siempre hay altibajos, y es cautivador observar la evolución de la relación única entre el criminal y el agente del FBI. Me gusta especialmente el final, cuando sacan a Leonardo Di Caprio de la cárcel y le ofrecen la oportunidad de trabajar para el FBI, en la división de fraudes. Hay un momento en el que debe elegir entre quedarse detrás de un escritorio o huir, y Tom Hanks simplemente le da la libertad de hacer lo que quiera. Ya la había visto antes, y ahora que tuve la oportunidad de verla de nuevo me encantó tanto o incluso más que la primera vez.

Robert Zemeckis realmente logró algo especial con Cast Away (2000). Aquí Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips)  es un ejecutivo de FedEx, un hombre respetado por su puntualidad y capacidad de organización, un hombre dispuesto a pasar su vida al lado de la mujer que ama, Helen Hunt, hasta que su avión sufre un accidente. Todos mueren excepto él, pero ahora está varado en una isla desierta. Sin nadie alrededor, el protagonista debe aprender a sobrevivir solo, sin tecnología ni compañía humana. No hay amenazas especiales, ni animales peligrosos, simplemente la soledad de un hombre que sueña durante años con volver a la mujer que ama. Ser el único actor en la pantalla durante la mayor parte de la película no es una tarea fácil de lograr y, sin embargo, Tom Hanks lo hace maravillosamente, hay tanta intensidad en su actuación que no se necesitan otros actores. Siempre recordaré el final, cómo después de obstáculos imposibles, después de arriesgar su vida, el protagonista logra navegar y es rescatado por un barco cuando está a punto de darse por vencido. Luego regresa a los Estados Unidos, sólo para descubrir que la mujer que amaba, la que lo mantuvo vivo todo este tiempo, siguió con su vida, está casada y ahora tiene hijos. “Fuiste el amor de mi vida”, dice ella entre lágrimas, pero es demasiado tarde. Y ahora, el protagonista tiene que empezar de nuevo.

Newuniversal - Warren Ellis & Salvador Larroca

I remember that the first time I heard about the New Universe, John Byrne was making a parody of it in the pages of a Superman comic. I had no idea about the New Universe but thanks to the guys in the letters column I found out about it. A few years later, looking for comic books in the historic center of Lima, I found some old Spanish editions with most of the New Universe line. I bought all of them and read them quickly. These were good comics with competent writers and pencilers. 

The concept of the New Universe was quite simple: “What if superheroes lived in the universe outside your window?”. The main premise was that superheroes existed in your / our world and, of course, there were no X-Men, Spider-Man or Avengers. A couple of decades after the cancellation of the New Universe, Marvel editors decided to celebrate the anniversary and recruited Warren Ellis and Salvador Larroca. This new creative team would revamp a concept that was unique in the '80s but not so much in the 21st century. So they created a different reality this was never meant to be the world outside your window. 

From the opening sequence of the Newuniversal we realize that this is an alternative timeline. Perhaps slightly better than our own reality, but still problematic. In this reality 9/11 never happened, the year is 2007, and the World Trade Center remains intact; now this might seem as an extremely optimistic approach but this isn't a perfect world, is just one that is slightly different to ours. John Lennon is still alive and well, and celebrating his birthday with new songs, but at the same time mourning the loss of his friend and collaborator Paul McCartney who was killed in the '80s. Famous people have been killed but they are not the same ones that we are familiar with.

Instead of having one protagonist, the story is told in a polyphonic way. All the characters that existed in the New Universe are present in Newuniversal. After the White Event, random people get unique superpowers. A girl lives in nightmares and encounters a spaceship bigger than anything that could be created in our planet, she’ll become Nightmask. Justice is a man in a comma, suddenly resurrected, now he can mentally see all the crimes that people around him are committing and so he quickly executes and brutally murders his nurse who was guilty of killing patients, not because of euthanasia but because he’s a serial killer, much like the Angel of Death from New Jersey.

Then we have a group of archaeologists who have discovered the remains of an old city and specially the skeleton of a warrior who has a unique star brand on the skull. Then we see Kenneth, a young man in a small and ordinary town, who after waking up realizes that his girlfriend, who was sleeping next to him, is now completely carbonized and there is a huge star brand all around them. Kenneth is arrested under the suspicion that he has killed the girl; however, as Kenneth starts to discover his incredible powers he quickly destroys, mutilates and kills every police officer in the station and escapes. Something the original Starbrand would’ve never done intentionally. Meanwhile Justice continuous to kill everyone who has been guilty of a crime and thanks to his powers he is unstoppable. 

"This is a paradigm shift" / "Este es un cambio de paradigma"

One of the most interesting moments for me was the expedition of the group of archaeologists, as they understand the meaning of their discovery: there is a an old city which was called the city of lights and they are now beginning to understand that there was no fantasy or exaggeration in that name. The city had highly advanced technology, including artificial lights and many other wonders that were impossible a thousand year ago. In the same way as in the old 80s comics, when Kenneth becomes Starbrand, he must face against an older and more powerful Starbrand, just like the previous bearers of the star brand. Like in the old comic book he cannot tell if they are looking out for him or if they are possible rivals. At the same time there is a government agency created to keep under control the possible appearance of super powered individuals. There is a woman capable of using a cutting-edge robotic armor, but is she ready to face men and women with unpredictable powers?

Justice

I feel like this was going to be a very complex story. All the setup is there, all the characters, all the mystery. These first 6 issues are a wonderful introduction into this universe, which is far more fascinating than the one from the 80s. However, Ellis unfortunately didn't have the time or the support from Marvel to finish telling this story, which is quite a shame. The artist, Salvador Larroca, had already transitioned from his more cartoonish style from '90s to a hyper-realistic approach, which he will continue to improve, until a year later when he started working on Iron Man, providing very realistic illustrations for the classic superhero. 

Archeologists / arqueólogos

Salvador Larroca has produced spectacular comics in the past, and the Newuniversal is only a mere example of that amazing talent. The Spanish artist is also in charge of the covers, a wonderful work of design that has particular elements that play with each other. There is always a main graphic motive and then everything else revolves around it, and then there are other elements that complement that main aspect. Of course, with such a wonderful brilliant creative team, it is just sad that we will never get to see the rest of the story.

Recuerdo que la primera vez que escuché sobre el Nuevo Universo fue cuando John Byrne estaba haciendo una parodia del mismo en las páginas de un cómic de Superman. No tenía ni idea sobre el Nuevo Universo pero gracias a los fans de la sección de cartas me enteré. Unos años después, buscando historietas en el centro histórico de Lima, encontré algunas ediciones antiguas en español con la mayor parte de la línea del Nuevo Universo. Los compré todos y los leí rápidamente. Estos eran buenos cómics con escritores y dibujantes competentes.

Starbrand

El concepto del Nuevo Universo era bastante simple: "¿Y si los superhéroes vivieran en el universo fuera de tu ventana?". La premisa principal era que los superhéroes existían en tu/nuestro mundo y, por supuesto, no existían los X-Men, Spider-Man o Avengers. Un par de décadas después de la cancelación del Nuevo Universo, los editores de Marvel decidieron celebrar el aniversario y reclutaron a Warren Ellis y Salvador Larroca. Este nuevo equipo creativo renovaría un concepto que fue único en los 80s pero que quizá ya no lo sería en el siglo XXI. Así que ellos crearon una realidad diferente, que no tenía la intención de ser el mundo fuera de tu ventana.

Kenneth

Desde la secuencia de apertura de Newuniversal nos damos cuenta de que esta es una línea de tiempo alternativa. Quizás un poco mejor que nuestra propia realidad, pero igualmente problemática. En esta realidad el 11 de setiembre nunca sucedió, el año es 2007, y el World Trade Center permanece intacto; ahora bien, esto puede parecer un enfoque extremadamente optimista, pero este no es un mundo perfecto, es  uno ligeramente diferente al nuestro. John Lennon sigue vivo y coleando, y celebra su cumpleaños con nuevas canciones, pero al mismo tiempo agraviado por la pérdida de su amigo y colaborador Paul McCartney, quien fue asesinado en los 80s. Han asesinado a personajes famosos, pero no son los mismos que conocemos.

Kenneth = Starbrand

En lugar de tener un protagonista, la historia se cuenta de forma polifónica. Todos los personajes que existieron en el Nuevo Universo están presentes en Newuniversal. Después del Evento Blanco, personas aleatorias obtienen superpoderes únicos. Una muchacha vive en pesadillas y se encuentra con una nave espacial más grande que cualquier cosa que pueda crearse en nuestro planeta, ella se convertirá en Nightmask. Justice es un hombre en coma, resucitado de repente, ahora puede ver mentalmente todos los crímenes que están cometiendo las personas a su alrededor y rápidamente ejecuta y asesina brutalmente a su enfermero que era culpable de matar pacientes, no mediante eutanasia sino porque ese sujeto era un asesino en serie, muy parecido al Ángel de la Muerte de New Jersey.

Justice

Luego tenemos un grupo de arqueólogos que han descubierto los restos de una ciudad antigua y especialmente el esqueleto de un guerrero que tiene una marca estelar única en el cráneo. Luego vemos a Kenneth, un joven de un pueblo pequeño y corriente, que al despertarse se da cuenta de que su novia, que dormía a su lado, ahora está completamente carbonizada y hay una enorme marca estelar a su alrededor. Kenneth es arrestado bajo la sospecha de que ha matado a la joven; sin embargo, cuando Kenneth comienza a descubrir sus increíbles poderes, rápidamente destruye, mutila y mata a todos los oficiales en la estación de policía y escapa. Algo que el Starbrand original nunca habría hecho intencionalmente. Mientras tanto, Justice continúa matando a todos los que han sido culpables de un crimen y gracias a sus poderes es imparable.

Justice

Uno de los momentos más interesantes para mí fue la expedición del grupo de arqueólogos, ya que entienden el significado de su descubrimiento: hay una ciudad antigua a la que llamaban la ciudad de las luces y ahora empiezan a entender que no hubo fantasía o exageración en ese nombre. La ciudad contaba con tecnología muy avanzada, incluyendo luces artificiales y muchas otras maravillas que eran imposibles hace mil años. De la misma manera que en los viejos cómics de los 80s, cuando Kenneth se convierte en Starbrand, debe enfrentarse a un Starbrand más viejo y poderoso, como lo hicieron los anteriores portadores de la marca estelar. Como en el viejo cómic, no se puede saber si lo están cuidando o si son posibles rivales. Al mismo tiempo, se crea una agencia gubernamental para mantener bajo control la posible aparición de individuos con superpoderes. Existe una mujer capaz de usar una armadura robótica de última generación, pero ¿está lista para enfrentarse a hombres y mujeres con poderes impredecibles?

Ancient city of lights / la antigua ciudad de las luces

Claramente esta iba a ser una historia muy compleja. La configuración dramática está ahí, todos los personajes, todo el misterio. Estos primeros 6 números son una maravillosa introducción a este universo, mucho más fascinante que el de los 80s. Sin embargo, Ellis desafortunadamente no tuvo el tiempo ni el apoyo de Marvel para terminar de contar esta historia, lo cual es una lástima. El artista Salvador Larroca ya había pasado de su estilo más caricaturesco de los 90s a un enfoque hiperrealista, que seguirá mejorando, hasta que un año después empezará a trabajar en Iron Man, aportando ilustraciones muy realistas para el clásico superhéroe.

"to be continued..." (no sequel after 16 years) / "continuará" (sin secuelas 16 años después)

Salvador Larroca ha producido cómics espectaculares en el pasado, y Newuniversal es tan sólo un ejemplo de ese asombroso talento. El artista español también está a cargo de las portadas, un maravilloso trabajo de diseño que tiene elementos particulares que juegan entre sí. Siempre hay un motivo gráfico principal y luego todo lo demás gira en torno a él, y luego hay otros elementos que complementan ese aspecto principal. Por supuesto, con un equipo creativo brillante y maravilloso, es triste que nunca podamos ver el resto de la historia.

April Comics / cómics de abril

Last month we only had half a dozen comics but now, lo and behold, there are over 20 comics, including quite a few FCBD books (some of which I might not have included here). So let’s start, shall we? Free Comic Book Day 2023 brought a lot of good comics (and some mediocre ones too, let’s be honest), unlike previous years, I really enjoyed the Marvel and DC books (Uncanny Avengers & Dawn of DC Knight of Terrors), 2000 AD Regened was a funny comic reimagined for children, not nearly as good as the original 2000 AD but not too bad either; Conan the Barbarian hit the right spot, and so did The Sacrificers, but the best FCBD book is actually a translation of a French comic: Animal Castle (by Xavier Dorison & Felix Delep). Danger Street and The X-Cellent continue to surprise me. I felt that the conclusion of Where Monsters Lie was a bit of a let down. I didn’t expect I would like The Ambassadors so much, issue # 3 especially, with magnificent art by Travis Charest is quite unique. And finally, I must say my favorite comic of the month is W0RLDTR33 (James Tynion IV does it again). And now, without further ado, here are April comics as per solicitations:

AMBASSADORS #2

CLOBBERIN TIME #2

(W/A/CA) Steve Skroce. The THING travels to Krakoa for a symposium on the Mutant and Superhuman Interconnection. While there, he teams up with Wolverine and is confronted by the mysterious plunderer from issue #1 - and the table is set for a battle for all creation and possibly Ben Grimm's greatest adventure. Rated T

 

DANGER STREET #5

El mes pasado apenas hubo media docena de cómics, pero ahora, hete aquí, hay más de 20 cómics, incluidos algunos ejemplares del FCBD (algunos de los cuales preferí no incluir aquí). Así que comencemos, ¿de acuerdo? Free Comic Book Day 2023 trajo muchos cómics buenos (y algunos mediocres también, seamos honestos), a diferencia de años anteriores, disfruté mucho de los ofrecimientos de Marvel y DC (Uncanny Avengers & Dawn of DC Knight of Terrors), 2000 AD Regened es un cómic chistoso reinventado para niños, no tan bueno como el 2000 AD original pero tampoco tan malo; Conan el Bárbaro dio en el clavo, al igual que The Sacrificers, pero el mejor título del FCBD es en realidad una traducción de un cómic francés: Animal Castle (de Xavier Dorison & Felix Delep). In April I had the chance to travel to sunny Santa Barbara, but I also had time to watch recent productions such as Matt Ruskin’s Boston Strangler (2023), a historic thriller in which two brave female reporters try to uncover the mystery of the Boston Strangler, a serial killer who strangled numerous women in the 60s. Keira Knightley is a wife and mother who desperately wants to become an investigative journalist, although all the assignments she gets are fashion-related, until she convinces Chris Cooper, the editor of the Boston Record America, to allow her to investigate a series of recent homicides. After successfully finding elements in common in the strangling murders, the protagonist is assisted by Carrie Coon, another female journalist. Together they must face sexism and the negligence of Boston police, while reporting on a dangerous serial killer. Ruskin does a good job in terms of historical reconstruction and creates compelling characters.

Triangle of Sadness (2022), written and directed by Ruben Östlund, is an incendiary satire that made me laugh out loud but also kept me at the edge of my seat. Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean are the ideal couple, both very attractive supermodels and highly popular influencers who travel in a luxurious cruise along rich people. What at first seems to be an indictment on superficiality, on exterior beauty and the fame that comes from posting the right pictures on social media, turns out to be a very complex analysis on the nature of wealth and socioeconomic differences. Woody Harrelson is the alcoholic captain in charge of the ship, and Vicki Berlin the cold and efficient officer who keeps everything in order and tries to constantly satisfy the extravagant desires of her wealthy clientele. However, when disaster hits, the order is inverted, and suddenly the super-rich will need the survival skills of the woman who used to clean their toilets. Irreverent, brilliant and extraordinarily funny, Triangle of Sadness is one of the best films of 2022 and one that definitely deserved more awards. I highly recommend it. 

Todd Field writes and directs Tár (2022), a remarkable film that deals with the nature of power. Cate Blanchett is Lydia Tár, a famous and talented lesbian composer, part of a very exclusive group of people able to achieve the EGOT (all major awards, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). She seems unstoppable, at the top of her game, full of new projects. And suddenly, one simple accusation starts to derail her life, proving that cancel culture is more prevalent now than ever before. Is she taking advantage of the beautiful girls that she is mentoring? After a girl commits suicide, people start accusing Tár of manipulating and dominating her disciples. And slowly but surely, she starts losing support, and her entire career seems about to fall apart. In Tár, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) reminds us why she is still one of the greatest actresses of her generation, with an unforgettable and intense performance (it’s infuriating to see that she didn’t win an Oscar a couple of months ago, despite the fact that she deserved it more than anyone else). Captivating, tense, thought-provoking and audacious, Tár is exactly the kind of film that we all need to watch, especially in times in which power and popularity seem to be so intricately connected. In my top 5 of the best 2022 films. 100% recommended. 

I must say the first Black Panther movie didn’t impress me much, and I almost skip the sequel, but Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) turned out to be better than expected. This might be the first superhero movie in which they have to deal with the death of the protagonist, in this case Black Panther. So here we get to see what happens after, and how Wakanda tries to survive as a nation while being attacked by Namor. In the cinematic universe, Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta, isn’t the king of Atlantis, but I still enjoyed his new origin. Letitia Wright has to become the new Black Panther to honor the memory of her brother, while Angela Bassett must mourn the loss of her son. The cast includes Ryan Coogler, Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld). 

Pablo Larraín directs Spencer (2021), a biopic that revolves around the life of Diana Spencer, AKA Lady Di, the princess of Wales, played by Kristen Stewart (Equals) in what might very well be the best performance of her career. Princess Diana goes to Sandringham Palace to spend Christmas with her estranged husband prince Charles, her children, prince William and prince Harry and the Queen herself. Family tensions, rumors, backstabbing, plays of power and attempts of manipulation are part of every day’s routine, as the conflicted princess Diana tries to navigate the most turbulent holidays of her life. After watching the first 5 seasons of The Crown (one of the best series ever) I’m officially obsessed with the Royal British family so Spencer immediately captured my attention. The cast includes Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Jack Farthing. This one is on my list of the best 10 2021 films!

As I just mentioned, The Crown quickly became one of my favorite series, and most of the writing is by Peter Morgan, who also writes The Queen (2006), directed by Stephen Frears. The concept is absolutely innovative: what happens during the secret audiences between the Queen of England and her prime ministers? The Queen is wonderfully portrayed by dame Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold), who won an Oscar as best actress for her performance. It’s 1997 and princess Diana has died in a car accident, beloved by the whole world, the death of the people’s princess takes a toll on the British royal family, especially since, stubborn as they are and faithful to their traditions, they decide to remain isolated in Balmoral Castle instead of publicly acknowledging their feelings toward the death of the princess. Michael Sheen is prime minister Tony Blair, a man who does everything he can to counsel and guide the Queen through a complicated mourning period. The cast includes James Cromwell, Alex Jennings (who is also a royal in The Crown) and Sylvia Syms. I had already watched this one before, but I loved it even more watching it a second time. The majestic behavior of the Queen, the way feelings are repressed or hidden and the political intrigues behind the funeral of the most beloved princess are portrayed elegantly and eloquently, reconfiguring our understanding of royalty. Truly outstanding.

Keira Knightley es una esposa y madre que quiere desesperadamente convertirse en periodista de investigación, aunque todos los trabajos que recibe están relacionados con la moda, hasta que convence a Chris Cooper, el editor del Boston Record America, para que le permita investigar una serie de recientes homicidios. Después de encontrar con éxito elementos en común en los asesinatos por estrangulamiento, la protagonista es ayudada por Carrie Coon, otra periodista. Lo que en un principio parece ser una crítica a la superficialidad, a la belleza exterior y a la fama que se obtiene al publicar las fotos apropiadas en las redes sociales, resulta ser un análisis muy complejo sobre la naturaleza de la riqueza y las diferencias socioeconómicas. Woody Harrelson es el capitán alcohólico a cargo del barco, y Vicki Berlin la fría y eficiente oficial que mantiene todo en orden y trata constantemente de satisfacer los extravagantes deseos de su acaudalada clientela. Sin embargo, cuando llega el desastre, el orden se invierte y, de repente, los súper ricos necesitarán las habilidades de supervivencia de la mujer que solía limpiar sus retretes. Irreverente, brillante y extraordinariamente divertida, Triangle of Sadness es una de las mejores películas del 2022 y una de las que sin duda merecía más premios. La recomiendo totalmente.

Después de que una chica se suicida, la gente comienza a acusar a Tár de manipular y dominar a sus discípulas. Y de manera lenta pero segura, comienza a perder apoyo y toda su carrera parece estar a punto de desmoronarse. En Tár, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) nos recuerda por qué sigue siendo una de las más grandes actrices de su generación, con una inolvidable e intensa interpretación (es indignante ver que no ganó un Oscar hace un par de meses, a pesar de que lo merecía más que nadie). Cautivadora, tensa, estimulante y audaz, Tár es exactamente el tipo de película que todos necesitamos ver, especialmente en épocas en los que el poder y la popularidad parecen conectarse tan intrincadamente. En mi top 5 de las mejores películas del 2022. 100% recomendable.
