I’ve been traveling for a month and I happen to be wearing Nike shoes right now, and who would’ve imagined that there was a mildly interesting story about how Nike became the biggest shoe brand. Air (2023) reunites Matt Damon (The Martian) and Ben Affleck (The Way Back) after 26 years. Affleck is the CEO of a struggling shoes company that is desperately trying to survive, and Damon is a middle-aged man, out of shape, who doesn’t think the concept of running shoes can apply to him, but he’s passionate about sports, basketball in particular, and he’s sure he knows who will be the next NBA megastar. Nike must persuade Michael Jordan to sign a contract with them, but why would the rising star be interested in a small company that clearly can’t compete with the big ones, or can it? There is a lot of business strategies here, a lot of planning, and a few interesting sequences. 

The real classic is Good Will Hunting (1997), directed by Gus Van Sant, based on a script by Matt Damon (The Last Duel) and Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), which was incredibly successful. Damon is a young man who works as a janitor at MIT. He has a special gift for math, but he has no formal education. Nobody knows about his potential until one day he solves a theorem that was meant only for advanced mathematicians. Stellan Skarsgård  is a professor who sees the potential in a young man who is throwing away his life. He can’t help him directly, but after an arduous search for therapists, all of them give up after the first session except for Robin Williams (House of D), a man who is still grieving the loss of his wife. The protagonist starts to get to know himself and to appreciate the possibilities he has ahead of him, for the first time he falls in love with Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck is his best friend, an uneducated guy with no future, but with a good heart, who recognizes how incredibly talented his friend is, the other guys don’t contribute much except for the hilarious “jerking off into a baseball glove” moment. I’ve always loved this film, and even after rewatching it, that impressive scene of emotional confrontation between the therapist and the patient, the old man and the young man, when we can see that hardest thing is to forgive ourselves, continues to touch me deeply. Full of emotion, amazing scenes, impressive acting and memorable lines, Good Will Hunting still deserves our full attention.

For more than a decade, Darren Aronofsky has been letting us down, and after the extremely disappointing Mother, I had almost given up on him. But I had to believe in the possibility of a return to greatness. And that’s what we see in The Whale (2022), not only for the director but also for the main actor Brendan Fraser, who for the last 20 years had basically disappeared from the spotlight. Based on the theater play by Samuel D. Hunter, this heartbreaking film shows us one week in the life of a gay English professor who teaches online and hasn’t left his home in years simply because he literally can’t carry his own weight. He is morbidly obese, and his health is deteriorating quickly. One night, Ty Simpkins (Jurassic World), a religious teenager shows up at his doorstep to share church pamphlets, only to find the obese man about having a heart attack after trying to masturbate. The protagonist realizes he only has a few days to live and decides to reconnect with his daughter, who hates him, and accuses him of abandoning her. Brendan Fraser performance will leave you in tears, as we stare at his slow movements, we feel his pain and the colossal effort that a simple task like standing up requires. A compulsive eater with a destructive relation with food… just as deadly an addiction as any other. The other characters are addicted to alcohol, marijuana, etc. In Aronofsky’s universe, addiction is always there (as seen in Requiem for a Dream). With unparalleled intensity and brutal honesty, Aronofsky carves a story from the deepest and darkest corner of the human nightmare, because for some life can be an awful and asphyxiating nightmare. And yet, amidst all this horror, Brendan Fraser still cares for people, especially for the daughter that rejects him, but will he have enough time to save that relationship? Without a doubt one of the best films from 2022.

 

I always say that after the magnificent The Squid and the Whale, it has been difficult for Noah Baumbach to produce something equally impressive (White Noise came pretty close). However, he actually accomplishes something unique, beautiful, haunting and powerful with Marriage Story (2019). I never would’ve imagined that a film about a couple getting divorced could be so fascinating, and yet it is. Adam Driver (The Dead Don’t Die) owns a small independent theater company and his wife is Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), a beautiful actress who works for him on all of his plays. They had a son, and they had a house and presumably a lot of love. But sometimes that isn’t enough. There is a distance between them. And finally, the idea of divorce becomes real, and when the lawyers get into the game, hell is unleashed. It was heartbreaking to observe who this couple, good people and kind, end up becoming enemies, and it’s especially worse when the lawyers exacerbate the worst part in them. But I guess that happens to everyone who gets divorced. It’s always a sad, lonely and painful process, Baumbach perfectly captures all the frustration and the anguish, and turns this into an absolutely outstanding film, one that deserves to be in the top 10 of 2019.

Affleck es el director general de una empresa de calzado a punto de quebrar y Damon es un hombre cuarentón, fuera de forma, que no cree que las zapatillas para correr puedan ser para él, pero le apasionan los deportes, el baloncesto en particular, y está seguro de saber quién será la próxima megaestrella de la NBA. Nike debe persuadir a Michael Jordan para que firme un contrato con ellos, pero ¿por qué la estrella en ascenso tendría interés en una pequeña empresa que claramente no puede competir con las grandes? No puede ayudarlo directamente, pero emprende una ardua búsqueda de terapeutas, todos se dan por vencidos después de la primera sesión, excepto Robin Williams (House of D), un hombre que todavía está de duelo por la pérdida de su esposa. El protagonista comienza a conocerse a sí mismo y a apreciar las posibilidades que tiene por delante, por primera vez se enamora de Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck es su mejor amigo, alguien sin educación y sin futuro, pero con un buen corazón, que reconoce lo increíblemente talentoso que es su amigo, algunos de los otros muchachos no contribuyen mucho, más allá de algún momento hilarante como el de "masturbarse en un guante de béisbol". Siempre me ha encantado esta película, y aún después de volver a verla, sigue conmoviendo esa impresionante escena de confrontación emocional entre el terapeuta y el paciente, el anciano y el joven, cuando podemos ver que lo más difícil es perdonarnos a nosotros mismos. Llena de emoción, escenas asombrosas, actuación impresionante y líneas memorables, Good Will Hunting aún merece toda nuestra atención.

El protagonista se da cuenta de que sólo le quedan unos días de vida y decide reconectarse con su hija, quien lo odia y lo acusa de haberla abandonado. La actuación de Brendan Fraser te dejará con lágrimas en los ojos, mientras observamos sus lentos movimientos, sentimos su dolor y el colosal esfuerzo que requiere una tarea tan simple como ponerse de pie. Es un devorador compulsivo con una relación destructiva con la comida… una adicción tan mortal como cualquier otra. Los demás personajes son adictos al alcohol, a la marihuana, etc. En el universo de Aronofsky, la adicción siempre está ahí (como se ve en Requiem for a Dream). Con una intensidad sin igual y una honestidad brutal, Aronofsky esculpe una historia desde el rincón más profundo y oscuro de la pesadilla humana, porque para algunos la vida puede ser una pesadilla horrible y asfixiante. Y, sin embargo, en medio de todo este horror, Brendan Fraser todavía se preocupa por las personas, especialmente por la hija que lo rechaza, pero ¿tendrá tiempo suficiente para salvar esa relación? Sin duda una de las mejores películas del 2022.

December films / películas de diciembre

At the end of December I had a couple of weeks off, and plenty of time to watch movies. I don’t think I’ve seen that many since I moved to the US so it’s quite a special month. Let’s start with Tick, Tick... Boom (2021), a dramatic and heartbreaking biopic that revolves around a New York composer, Jonathan Larson, magnificently played by Andrew Garfield (Boy A). After working for years on his own musical, the protagonist must finish it in time for an important presentation, but he’s simultaneously dealing with a relationship that is falling apart, a dead-end job in the local diner, and many of his closest friends dying of AIDS. Based on real life events, director Lin-Manuel Miranda (arguably the biggest name in Broadway today) connects with the heart of the characters, with their constant struggles, their passion, their creativity, but also the infinite pain and sadness that comes after witnessing so many good friends and so many young people dying from a disease that, at the time, was the equivalent of a death sentence. In real life Jonathan Larson died when he was only 35. I don’t think any other film from 2021 has made my cry as much as this one, but at the same time, it has reminded me why art and music is so important for our lives. I highly recommend it. 

 

Jed McKay had already impressed me with his previous films, such as The Big Short, and with Don’t Look Up (2021) my high expectations were met and exceeded. This film is an intelligent satire that delves deep into the contradictions of today’s society. When astronomer Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) and graduate student Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) discover a huge asteroid heading to Earth, they try to warn everyone about the imminent danger of this ‘extinction event’, and yet, for Meryl Streep (Let Them All Talk), the president of the United States, this situation is only interesting in terms of how it can be used politically, whereas for the media, more concerned with celebrities and frivolities, the risk of the asteroid isn’t an emergency. From opposing political points of view to social media and internet memes, McKay’s film proves how stupid people can be, but at the same time, highlights how the scientific community isn’t taken seriously. If people today deny the existence of global warming, tomorrow they will deny the impending doom of an asteroid rapidly approaching. In addition to constant laughter I also admired the moments in which you can see true connection between the characters; and the ending was brilliant! The all-star cast includes Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Timothée Chalamet (Dune), Jonah Hill (Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot), among others.

Jon Watts has directed the best Marvel production I’ve seen in years: Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and this might be the first time I see a Marvel movie taking full advantage of comic books in which parallel universes have always existed. Here, Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), is dealing with the catastrophic consequences of having his identity revealed, and he asks for help to Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange). Doctor Strange, in his attempt to help, opens the door to the multiverse, and to villains and heroes from alternative realities. As a result, we have characters from all the previous Spider-Man filmic universes showing up together here for the first time: Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans and Willem Dafoe reprise their old roles creating a fascinating effect for the viewers. And the most amazing thing is to see once again Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Tobey Maguire as Spider-Men. The chemistry between the three actors is pure magic, and their scenes together have so much emotion. I can’t remember the last time a Marvel movie made me feel so excited. A great script and an incredibly talented cast, including Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, J.K. Simmons, turn this into a must-see. I especially loved the bittersweet ending, quite exceptional for a superhero franchise. If you haven’t seen Spider-Man yet, what are you waiting for?

I’ve always been a big fan of Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame) so I was delighted to see her reprising her role in Black Widow (2021), directed by Cate Shortland. The story takes place before Avengers: Endgame, and it’s strongly connected with Black Widow’s past as part of a family of Russian spies in the US. Here we learn a lot about the unusual childhood of the protagonist and her sister Florence Pugh, who was also trained to be a deadly spy. The two decide to find the Red Room and save the lives of countless girls being trained and brainwashed by the evil Ray Winstone (Scum), and so in the process they must reconnect with their adoptive parents David Harbour and Rachel Weisz. I really enjoyed this movie and I honestly don’t understand why so many people complained about it when it was released.   

Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog (2021) is considered by many as the hidden gem of 2021, and I agree. This is an incredibly powerful and intense film, full of moments of both fierceness and subtlety, and above all, a captivating and ever-increasing tension between the main characters. Jesse Plemons is a rich rancher who decides to marry Kirsten Dunst (All Good Things), a beautiful widow, who agrees to the marriage to provide her teenage son, Kodi Smit-McPhee (All the Wilderness), with better opportunities in life. However, the rich rancher has a brother, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), who hates the woman and decides to torture her psychologically, slowly destroying her confidence and pushing her into near fatal alcoholism. Cumberbatch’s character is presented as the epitome of strength and masculinity, however, when the woman’s son enters into the equation, things change. The boy discovers that the man respected and feared by many has dark secrets that he constantly must hide, secrets that involve a sexuality that doesn’t conform to the heterosexual normative. Between the man and the boy a strange relationship starts to develop, one that will have an unexpected ending. Jane Campion proves to be an admirable filmmaker that creates a unique atmosphere and encourages remarkable performances from her actors and actresses.  

Nora Fingscheidt’s The Unforgivable (2021) is a dramatic and honest film about life after prison. Sandra Bullock (Gravity) has served her sentence for more than a decade and now that she is free, she must try to reinsert herself into a society that hates and rejects her. Bullock’s acting is absolutely impressive and one can’t help but to relate to her character and her efforts to get a job and to find her lost sister. Vincent D'Onofrio is the lawyer who helps her and Jon Bernthal is the coworker who does everything he can to prove to her that she deserves to be loved again. However, some crimes are truly unforgivable, and the protagonist soon understands that no matter what she tries to do, she can’t escape from her terrible past. The Unforgivable kept me in suspense and surprised me with a revealing and very touching final sequence. This one also deserves to be in my top ten of the best of 2021.  

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2021, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

A fines de diciembre tuve un par de semanas libres y mucho tiempo para ver películas. No creo haber visto tantas desde que me mudé a Estados Unidos, así que este es un mes bastante especial. Empecemos con Tick, Tick... Boom (2021), un cinta biográfica dramática y desgarradora que gira en torno a un compositor neoyorquino, Jonathan Larson, magníficamente interpretado por Andrew Garfield (Boy A). Después de trabajar durante años en su propio musical, el protagonista debe terminarlo a tiempo para una presentación importante, pero al mismo tiempo está lidiando con una relación que se desmorona, un trabajo sin salida en la cafetería local y muchos de sus más cercanos amigos que mueren de SIDA. Basada en hechos de la vida real, el director Lin-Manuel Miranda (posiblemente el nombre más importante de Broadway en la actualidad) se conecta con el corazón de los personajes, con sus luchas constantes, su pasión, su creatividad, pero también con el dolor y la tristeza infinitos que surgen después de presenciar a tantos buenos amigos y tan jóvenes muriendo a causa de una enfermedad que, en ese momento, equivalía a una sentencia de muerte. En la vida real, Jonathan Larson murió cuando tenía apenas 35 años. No creo que ninguna otra película del 2021 me haya hecho llorar tanto como esta, pero al mismo tiempo me ha recordado por qué el arte y la música son tan importantes para nuestras vidas. La recomiendo totalmente.

 

Jed McKay ya me había impresionado con sus películas anteriores, como The Big Short, y con Don't Look Up (2021) mis altas expectativas fueron cumplidas y superadas. Esta película es una sátira inteligente que ahonda en las contradicciones de la sociedad actual. Cuando el astrónomo Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) y la estudiante de posgrado Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) descubren un enorme asteroide que se dirige a la Tierra, intentan advertir a todos sobre el peligro inminente de este 'evento de extinción' y, sin embargo, para Meryl Streep (Let Them All Talk), la presidenta de los Estados Unidos, esta situación es sólo interesante en cuanto a su utilidad política, mientras que para los medios, más preocupados por las celebridades y las frivolidades, el riesgo del asteroide no es una emergencia. Desde puntos de vista políticos opuestos hasta los 'memes' de las redes sociales y de Internet, la película de McKay demuestra lo estúpida que puede ser la gente, pero al mismo tiempo destaca cómo no se toma en serio a la comunidad científica. Si la gente hoy niega la existencia del calentamiento global, mañana negará la condena inminente de un asteroide que se acerca rápidamente. Además de reírme constantemente también admiré los momentos en los que se puede ver la verdadera conexión entre los personajes; ¡y el final fue brillante! El elenco estelar incluye a Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Timothée Chalamet (Dune), Jonah Hill (Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot), entre otros.

Jon Watts ha dirigido la mejor producción de Marvel que he visto en años: Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), y esta podría ser la primera vez que veo una película de Marvel aprovechando al máximo estos cómics en los que siempre han existido universos paralelos. Aquí, Spider-Man, interpretado por Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), lidia con las catastróficas consecuencias de que se revele su identidad, y le pide ayuda al Doctor Strange, interpretado por Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange). Doctor Strange, en su intento de ayudar, abre la puerta al multiverso, y a villanos y héroes de realidades alternativas. Como resultado, tenemos personajes de todos los universos fílmicos anteriores de Spider-Man y aparecen aquí juntos por primera vez: Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans y Willem Dafoe retoman sus viejos roles creando un efecto fascinante para los espectadores. Y lo más sorprendente es ver una vez más a Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) y Tobey Maguire como Spider-Men. La química entre los tres actores es pura magia, y sus escenas juntos tienen mucho sentimiento. No puedo recordar la última vez que una película de Marvel me hizo sentir tan emocionado. Un gran guión y un elenco increíblemente talentoso, que incluye a Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, J.K. Simmons, hacen que sea imprescindible. Me encantó especialmente el final agridulce, bastante excepcional para una franquicia de superhéroes. Si aún no han visto Spider-Man, ¿qué están esperando?

Siempre he sido un gran admirador de Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), así que me encantó verla volver a su papel en Black Widow (2021), dirigida por Cate Shortland. La historia tiene lugar antes de Avengers: Endgame y está fuertemente conectada con el pasado de Black Widow como parte de una familia de espías rusos en los Estados Unidos. Aquí aprendemos mucho sobre la infancia inusual de la protagonista y su hermana Florence Pugh, quien también fue entrenada para ser una letal espía. Las dos deciden encontrar la Habitación Roja y salvar las vidas de innumerables chicas a las que el malvado Ray Winstone (Scum) entrena y a las que les lava el cerebro, y en el proceso deben volver a conectarse con sus padres adoptivos David Harbour y Rachel Weisz. Realmente disfruté esta película y, sinceramente, no entiendo por qué tanta gente le hizo mala fama cuando se estrenó.

The Power of the Dog (2021) de Jane Campion es considerada por muchos como la joya oculta del 2021, y estoy de acuerdo. Esta es una película increíblemente poderosa e intensa, llena de momentos de fiereza y sutileza, y sobre todo, una tensión cautivadora siempre en aumento entre los personajes principales. Jesse Plemons es un ranchero rico que decide casarse con Kirsten Dunst (All Good Things), una hermosa viuda, quien acepta el matrimonio para brindarle a su hijo adolescente, Kodi Smit-McPhee (All the Wilderness), mejores oportunidades en la vida. Sin embargo, el rico ranchero tiene un hermano, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), que odia a la mujer y decide torturarla psicológicamente, destruyendo lentamente su confianza y empujándola hacia un alcoholismo casi fatal. El personaje de Cumberbatch se presenta como el epítome de la fuerza y la masculinidad, sin embargo, cuando el hijo de la mujer entra en la ecuación, las cosas cambian. El chico descubre que el hombre respetado y temido por muchos tiene oscuros secretos que constantemente debe ocultar, secretos que involucran una sexualidad que no se ajusta a la normativa heterosexual. Entre el hombre y el muchacho comienza a desarrollarse una extraña relación, que tendrá un final inesperado. Jane Campion demuestra ser una cineasta admirable que crea una atmósfera única y fomenta actuaciones notables con sus actores y actrices.

The Unforgivable (2021) de Nora Fingscheidt es una película dramática y honesta sobre la vida después de la prisión. Sandra Bullock (Gravity) ha cumplido su condena por más de una década y ahora que está en libertad debe intentar reinsertarse en una sociedad que la odia y la rechaza. La actuación de Bullock es absolutamente impresionante y uno no puede evitar sentirse cercano a su personaje y sus esfuerzos por conseguir un trabajo y encontrar a su hermana perdida. Vincent D'Onofrio es el abogado que la ayuda y Jon Bernthal es el compañero de trabajo que hace todo lo posible para demostrarle que merece ser amada nuevamente. Sin embargo, algunos crímenes son realmente imperdonables, y la protagonista pronto comprende que no importa lo que intente hacer, no puede escapar de su terrible pasado. The Unforgivable (Lo imperdonable) me mantuvo en vilo y me sorprendió con una secuencia final reveladora y muy conmovedora. También merece estar en mi top ten de lo mejor del 2021.

El tiempo no es sino un delgado velo, sobre él nuestras siluetas se abultan o aligeran. Otro año va y viene en este atormentado blog y ello indudablemente merece que sopesemos apropiadamente nuestras experiencias cinematográficas. Que sea así, por ende, y dejadnos girar el torno y la rueda. Hablad, oh lectores, y escuchad bien, puesto que aún nos resta suficiente ingenio para sorprenderos. Se ha propuesto que debíamos encontrar posiciones para todas las imágenes en movimiento presentadas en el transcurso del 2023, y con mente ágil y conocimientos tanto en materia de directores como de actores, confiamos en que vosotros incluiréis nuestro juicio entre los mejores. Aqueste es nuestro testimonio... suficiente en nuestro pensamiento íntimo que estas apreciaciones, desparramadas al alimón, sean de la más noble disposición.

May movies / películas de mayo

In May, I went to see Avengers: Infinity War (2018), directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who had already made a splendid job with one of America’s most iconic heroes. I have to admit I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It can’t be easy to direct a movie with over 20 characters, but I think the Russos succeeded not only in proving why these are Earth’s greatest heroes but also in creating a complex and compelling villain like Thanos. I think it doesn’t matter who your favorite Marvel hero is, you probably found at least a few good scenes with the characters you love the most. I felt particularly excited to see Doctor Strange and Thor on the spotlight, I loved the Stan Lee cameo, and I felt that the relationships between the heroes were handled in a way that added dramatic depth despite the fact that this is an action-oriented movie. Of course, this one (even more so than the others) has an impressive cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Evans (Captain America), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Paul Bettany (Vision), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), etc. I really enjoyed Avengers: Infinity War and I can’t wait to see the sequel!

En mayo, fui a ver Avengers: Infinity War (2018), dirigida por Anthony Russo y Joe Russo, quienes ya habían hecho un espléndido trabajo con uno de los héroes más icónicos de Estados Unidos. Debo admitir que no sabía qué esperar, pero quedé gratamente sorprendido. No puede ser fácil dirigir una película con más de 20 personajes, pero creo que los Russos tuvieron éxito no solo en demostrar por qué estos son los héroes más grandes de la Tierra sino también en crear un villano complejo y convincente como Thanos. Creo que no importa quién es tu héroe favorito de Marvel, probablemente encontrarás al menos buenas escenas con los personajes que más te gustan. Me sentí particularmente emocionado al ver a Doctor Strange y Thor en escena, me encantó el cameo de Stan Lee, y sentí que las relaciones entre los héroes fueron manejadas de una manera que añadía densidad dramática a pesar de que esta es una película sobre todo de acción.
