February comics / cómics de febrero

February was such a good month for comics. I’m amazed by the high quality of Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer, which are quickly turning into my most eagerly-awaited monthly series. Millar is still firing on all cylinders with Huck and especially the second volume of Jupiter’s Circle. And Image has a couple of promising new series: Snowfall and Cry Havoc. However, once again my favorite comic of the month, and by quite a large margin, is Alan Moore’s Providence # 7. Can’t wait to start reviewing this series. And now without further ado here are February comics as per solicitations:

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #4

Febrero fue un gran mes en materia de cómics. Estoy asombrado por la altísima calidad de “Doctor Strange” y “Silver Surfer”, que se están convirtiendo en dos de mis series mensuales predilectas. Millar sigue dando lo mejor de sí con “Huck” y especialmente el segundo volumen de “Jupiter’s Circle”. Image ha lanzado un par de títulos prometedores: “Snowfall” y “Cry Havoc”. Sin embargo, una vez más, mi cómic favorito del mes es, de lejos, Providence # 7 de Alan Moore. Estoy impaciente por reseñar esta serie. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos aquí están los cómics de febrero.

January comics / cómics de enero

The beginning of 2016 comes with plenty of comics, just the way I like it. The first issue of Silver Surfer was very good, and I really enjoyed the conclusion of Nameless (I’ll be reviewing the series in April); Doctor Strange and Jupiter’s Circle keep getting better and better. I must say my favorite comic of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence # 6. And now without further ado here are January comics as per solicitations:

El 2016 empieza lleno de cómics, tal como a mí me gusta. El primer número de “Silver Surfer” fue muy bueno, y realmente disfruté la conclusión de “Nameless” (estaré reseñando esta serie en abril); “Doctor Strange” y “Jupiter’s Circle” siguen mejorando. Debo decir que mi cómic favorito del mes fue Providence # 6 de Alan Moore. Y ahora sin mayores preámbulos aquí están los cómics de enero:

Union Jack - Ben Raab & John Cassaday

Amateur writers have a particularly difficult time breaking into the comic book industry, but that doesn’t mean artists have it easier. 20 years ago, when John Cassaday left his home in Texas to follow his crazy dreams of becoming an artist, he probably asked himself if he was making the right decision. That’s the kind of question nobody can answer for you. And perhaps that’s a good thing, because it means people will never find the right argument to discourage you.

So two decades ago Cassaday met Mark Waid in a comic book convention, and the veteran writer was amazed at the way this Texan newcomer “knew how to draw mood and emotion and not just pole-dancers in superhero costumes”. Even at the beginning of his career, Cassaday could portray so many emotions in just one panel, effectively creating an atmosphere that was unique and that elevated whatever comic he was working on from a simple entertainment product into a superb work of art. 

For the past few years, I’ve been tracking down Cassaday’s ‘old stuff’. Sure, we all know how brilliant he was in Planetary or Astonishing X-Men, and how he repeatedly won the most prestigious awards of the industry (Eisner Awards, Eagle Awards, etc.), but I wanted to find out how did it all begin. So that’s why I picked up Union Jack, a 3-issue miniseries co-written by Ben Raab and John Cassaday and, of course, fully illustrated by Cassaday.

In “Tradition” (originally published in Union Jack # 1, December 1998), Joey Chapman (the new Union Jack) remembers his predecessor (Lord Falsworth) and, at the same time, uncovers a vampire conspiracy that will force him to visit old friends like Lady Jacqueline Falsworth Crichton (a woman who fought in WWII and that hasn’t aged a day since then) and her son Kenneth Crichton (a frail man who suffers from a very abnormal case of anemia).

Cassaday, of course, is no stranger to the vampiric subgenre, and his interest for Dracula’s legacy has led him to be the artist in I Am Legion (an extraordinary French miniseries about vampires in WWII) and the cover illustrator for Dynamite’s The Complete Dracula. “Faith” (Union Jack # 2, January 1999) and “Fate” (Union Jack # 2, February 1999) are faithful to the classic Bram Stoker concepts but they also include many legends and historical conjectures to substantiate an already appealing premise. 

Union Jack versus the vampires / Union Jack versus los vampiros

Union Jack turned out to be a very interesting miniseries, certainly better than many of the titles Marvel was publishing back then. Characters are well-defined, motives remain clear and the villainous Baron Blood is as scary as ever. And the art is amazing. Naturally, in the late 90s, Cassaday was still in the process of refining his artistic style, so he was still lacking a certain visual sophistication and his attention for details wasn’t as admirable as it is now. And yet, a quick glance at his pages was more than enough to notice how immensely talented he was. His dynamic images, his sense of composition, his graphic virtuosity, it’s all there, and like a diamond in the rough, it doesn’t need to be polished to captivate the eye of the beholder. Cassaday’s covers are iconic and powerful, successfully turning a rather obscure character into the ultimate superhero.

Para un escritor novato resulta particularmente difícil entrar a la industria del cómic, pero eso no significa que para los artistas sea más fácil lograrlo. Hace 20 años, cuando John Cassaday abandonó su natal Texas para seguir su alocado sueño de artista, es probable que se preguntara si estaba tomando la decisión correcta. Ese es el tipo de pregunta que nadie puede responder por ti. Y tal vez eso sea una ventaja, porque significa que la gente nunca encontrará el argumento adecuado para desanimarte.

Así que hace dos décadas Cassaday conoció a Mark Waid en una convención de cómics, y el veterano escritor fue sorprendido por la forma en que este aficionado tejano “sabía dibujar el estado de ánimo y la emoción, y no sólo bailarines exóticos en trajes de superhéroes”. Incluso al principio de su carrera, Cassaday podía representar muchísimas emociones en tan sólo una viñeta, creando una atmósfera única, y es por eso que ese cómic dejaba de ser un simple producto de entretenimiento para convertirse en una magnífica obra de arte.

En los últimos años, he estado rastreando los primeros trabajos de Cassaday. Claro, todos sabemos lo brillante que fue en “Planetary” o “Astonishing X-Men”, y cómo ganó varias veces los premios más prestigiosos de la industria (premios Eisner, premios Eagle, etc.), pero yo quería saber de qué manera empezó. Así que por eso elegí “Union Jack”, una miniserie de 3 ejemplares co-escrita por Ben Raab y John Cassaday y, por supuesto, totalmente ilustrada por Cassaday.

En “Tradición” (publicado originalmente en Union Jack # 1, diciembre de 1998), Joey Chapman (el nuevo Union Jack) recuerda a su predecesor (Lord Falsworth) y, al mismo tiempo, descubre una conspiración de vampiros que lo obligará a visitar viejos amigos como Lady Jacqueline Falsworth Crichton (una mujer que combatió en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y que no ha envejecido ni un solo día desde entonces) y su hijo Kenneth Crichton (un hombre frágil que sufre de un caso muy anormal de anemia).

Cassaday's extraordinary composition / extraordinaria composición de Cassaday

Cassaday, por supuesto, no es ajeno al subgénero vampírico, y su interés por el legado de Drácula lo motivó a ser el artista de I Am Legion (extraordinaria miniserie francesa sobre vampiros en la Segunda Guerra Mundial) y el portadista de “The Complete Dracula” de Dynamite. “Fe” (Union Jack # 2, enero de 1999) y “Destino” (Union Jack # 2, febrero de 1999) son fieles a los conceptos clásicos de Bram Stoker, pero también incluyen muchas leyendas y conjeturas históricas para justificar una premisa ya de por sí atractiva.

Union Jack resultó ser una miniserie muy interesantes, sin duda mejor que muchos de los títulos que Marvel publicaba en aquel entonces. Los personajes están bien definidos, las intrigas están bien planteadas y el malévolo Baron Blood es tan temible como antaño. Y el arte es increíble. Naturalmente, a finales de los 90s, Cassaday todavía estaba en el proceso de perfeccionar su estilo artístico, por lo que todavía faltaba una cierta sofisticación visual y su detallismo no era tan admirable como lo es actualmente. Sin embargo, un rápido vistazo a sus páginas es más que suficiente para notar lo inmensamente talentoso que era. Sus imágenes dinámicas, su sentido de la composición, su virtuosismo gráfico, todo ello es evidente; estas páginas son como un diamante en bruto que no necesita ser pulido para cautivar el ojo del espectador. Las portadas de Cassaday son icónicas y enérgicas, convirtiendo con éxito a este personaje casi desconocido en el superhéroe definitivo.

November comics / cómics de noviembre

November sure brought plenty of good surprises. Airboy comes to its irreverent conclusion (I really enjoyed it), and there were some truly interesting first issues, such as Millar’s Huck and Aaron’s Doctor Strange (in fact, the first two chapters in this new saga of the Sorcerer Supreme were a lot of fun). The Puma Blues HC is a gorgeous edition (Zulli is such an amazing artist and this is the kind of book I’ll treasure forever). The best comic of the month is The Goddamned #1 by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra (intense story and wonderful art: a must read!). So now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:  

AIRBOY #4 (of 4) (MR)

Batman: Shaman - Dennis O’Neil & Ed Hannigan

I wasn’t even born when legendary writer Dennis O’Neil introduced Ra’s Al Ghul as a worthy antagonist, or when he redefined Green Lantern and Green Arrow. Curiously, the very first O’Neil comic I read was issue 1 of “Batman: Sword of Azrael” in the 90s. Even 20 years after his first emblematic run on Batman, this veteran author was still creating brand new characters. I guess that’s the deal with truly creative people, they can still surprise us year after year, decade after decade. Obviously, I became an O’Neil fan right away. And I just had the need to find some of his earlier works.

So I decided to start with “Shaman” (published in Legends of the Dark Knight # 1-5, from November 1989 to March 1990), the inaugural arc of a new title that DC released to commemorate Batman’s 50th anniversary. Nowadays with dozens of Batman-related books on the shelves, it’s actually quite difficult to believe that back in the late 80s, there were only 2 titles: Detective Comics and Batman. Legends of the Dark Knight became the third ongoing series, and clearly DC made an extra effort in putting together the best creative teams for unique and memorable stand-alone arcs. And who could’ve been better suited than Dennis O’Neil to start the ball rolling?

Building upon the premises established by Frank Miller in “Batman: Year One”, O’Neil came up with a fascinating saga about a young and inexperienced Bruce Wayne. In the initial chapter, Bruce is still training to become the world’s greatest detective, and his quest takes him to Alaska. In a lonely mountain, Bruce Wayne fights against a dangerous adversary, and barely manages to escape: “It’s cold. Probably 30 below. Fifty, with the wind chill. I have no food, no matches, no radio or flares, and very little clothing. I’m somewhere in north Alaska. The nearest village is a day’s trek away. The storm will hit soon”.

There is a reason why we may connect with Batman better than with other superheroes. Although he is able to accomplish impossible feats, at the end of the day he’s nothing more than a human being. But he is the best we can ever hope to be. He has trained for years to master all fighting techniques, honing his abilities, perfecting both body and mind in the process. And his human capacity, taken to the extreme, is what we find so captivating. Against impossible odds, Batman will figure out a way to succeed. Or he will die trying. “Shaman” exemplifies this notion. Surviving in low temperatures without equipment becomes a tough challenge for Bruce Wayne. But he knows he cannot give up. He must keep walking. The cold is the enemy, and if he stops, even for a second, he’ll freeze to death. O’Neil describes Bruce Wayne’s agonizing march in such a manner that we can almost feel the drop in temperature. In the end, Bruce Wayne is rescued by a shaman and his daughter, he knows he owes them his life, but he’s still an immature young man who believes that giving money away will prove his gratitude. And that’s a mistake that triggers a dramatic sequence of events.

Bruce Wayne goes back to Gotham, and a couple of years later, he starts patrolling the streets at night as Batman. Of course, he’s assisted by Alfred Pennyworth; in the past he was simply a supporting character and now, in the hands of O’Neil, he’s a more complex and appealing co-protagonist. Alfred’s “sardonic wit” and British irony are now the most well-known personality traits of the most famous butler in comics’ history, and it’s all thanks to O’Neil. In subsequent chapters, a series of seemingly unrelated events start pointing out at a connection between Alaska, shamanism, pagan rites and a new adversary powerful enough to defeat Batman on their first confrontation. I don’t think it’s a good idea to spoil the ending, so I won’t get into details. But I will mention a couple of my favorite moments. The first one is Bruce Wayne’s return to Alaska, who discovers that the money he had given to the tribe through the Wayne Foundation has corrupted their way of living, turning the aborigines into alcoholics or drug-addicts; the saddest part is when Bruce finds the shaman that saved his life, and sees him performing cheap tricks for tourists and degrading himself for a bottle of liquor. That’s the kind of scene I don’t think we could ever get to see in a DC book nowadays, not because the editors wouldn’t allow it but mainly because our generation genuinely believes that all the problems in the world can be solved with money.

Bruce Wayne: the clothes maketh the man / Bruce Wayne: el traje lo es todo

Another extraordinary moment takes place when the shaman’s daughter explains Bruce Wayne that, to become who he really is, he does not have to wear a mask, he as to become the mask. That is the leitmotif throughout this arc. Batman isn’t a masked hero in a conventional manner, he doesn’t stop being Batman the minute he takes off his costume. He remains Batman, under all circumstances, always. The covers of these 5 issues, gorgeously illustrated by Ed Hannigan and George Pratt (with a great logo design by Dean Motter), certainly support this idea. The interior art is also spectacular, thanks to Ed Hannigan’s pencils and John Beatty’s inks; they’re both faithful to the groundbreaking style introduced by David Mazzucchelli in Year One and yet innovative in their own way. Hannigan’s “figures are a nice merging of realism and dynamic anatomy. His flair for layout is among the best in the business. The storytelling flows quickly and smoothly, combining beautiful establishing shots with intriguing, cinematic angles”, affirms Michael Christiansen, and I totally agree with him. O’Neil and Hannigan set a high standard for what would unquestionably become one of the best DC ongoing series.

Gotham

A powerful enemy / un poderoso enemigo

Conectamos con Batman mejor que con otros superhéroes por una razón: a pesar de que es capaz de lograr hazañas imposibles, al final del día no es más que un ser humano. Pero él es lo mejor que podríamos aspirar a ser. Él ha entrenado durante años para dominar todas las técnicas de lucha, perfeccionando sus habilidades, entrenando el cuerpo y la mente. Y su capacidad humana, llevada al extremo, es lo que encontramos tan cautivadora. Contra viento y marea, Batman encontrará la manera de triunfar. O morirá en el intento. “Shaman” ejemplifica esta noción. Sobrevivir a bajas temperaturas sin equipamiento alguno se convierte en un reto difícil para Bruce Wayne. Pero él sabe que no puede darse por vencido. Debe seguir caminando. El frío es el enemigo, y si se detiene, siquiera por un segundo, morirá congelado. O'Neil describe la marcha agonizante de Bruce Wayne de tal manera que casi podemos sentir el descenso de la temperatura. Al final, Bruce Wayne es rescatado por un chamán y su hija; él sabe que les debe la vida, pero sigue siendo un joven inmaduro que cree que al regalar dinero demostrará su gratitud. Y ese es un error que desencadena una dramática secuencia de eventos.

Bruce Wayne regresa a Gotham, y un par de años más tarde, en las noches, comienza a patrullar las calles como Batman. Por supuesto, es ayudado por Alfred Pennyworth; en el pasado, él era simplemente un personaje secundario y ahora, en manos de O'Neil, es un co-protagonista más complejo y encantador. El “ingenio sarcástico” de Alfred y su ironía inglesa son ahora los rasgos de personalidad más conocidos del mayordomo más respetado de los cómics, y es todo gracias a O'Neil. En los capítulos siguientes, una serie de eventos aparentemente no relacionados señalan una conexión entre Alaska, el chamanismo, los ritos paganos y un nuevo adversario lo suficientemente poderoso como para derrotar a Batman en su primer enfrentamiento. No creo que sea una buena idea revelar el desenlace, así que no entraré en detalles. Pero sí mencionaré un par de mis momentos favoritos. El primero es el retorno a Alaska; allí Bruce Wayne descubre que el dinero que donó a la tribu mediante la Fundación Wayne ha corrompido su modo de vida, convirtiendo a los aborígenes en alcohólicos o drogadictos; la parte más triste es cuando Bruce encuentra al chamán que le salvó la vida, y lo ve realizando trucos baratos para los turistas y degradándose a sí mismo por una botella de licor. Ese es el tipo de escena que no creo que podríamos llegar a ver en un cómic de DC hoy en día, no porque los editores lo impidiesen, sino sobre todo porque nuestra generación realmente cree que todos los problemas del mundo se pueden resolver con dinero.

Otro momento extraordinario tiene lugar cuando la hija del chamán le explica a Bruce Wayne que, para aceptarse a sí mismo, él no tiene que usar una máscara, él debe convertirse en la máscara. Ese es el hilo conductor de este arco. Batman no es un héroe enmascarado a la manera convencional, no deja de ser Batman al momento de quitarse el traje. Él sigue siendo Batman, bajo cualquier circunstancia, siempre. Las portadas de estos 5 ejemplares, magníficamente ilustradas por Ed Hannigan y George Pratt (con un logo diseñado por Dean Motter), sin duda dan sustento a esta idea. El arte interior también es espectacular, gracias a los lápices de Ed Hannigan y las tintas de John Beatty; ambos son fieles al estilo innovador introducido por David Mazzucchelli en “Año Uno”, y al mismo tiempo aportan un toque novedoso. “Las figuras de Hannigan son una buena combinación de realismo y anatomía dinámica. Su gusto por el diseño le da una gran ventaja en la industria. La narración fluye rápidamente y sin problemas, combinando bellas tomas panorámicas con ángulos cinematográficos intrigantes”, afirma Michael Christiansen, y estoy totalmente de acuerdo con él. O'Neil y Hannigan fijaron un alto estándar para lo que sería indudablemente una de las mejores series de DC.
