The Secret Service # 6 - Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons

The best spy of the British Crown is dead, and now it’s up to his nephew Gary to save not only England but the rest of the world as well. In the final chapter of “The Secret Service”, Gary decides that in order to find allies he must look for them not in the official ranks of the secret service but rather in their training facilities. That’s why he recruits many of his classmates, and together they lead one final, desperate, even suicidal attack to the enemy’s headquarters.

Gary’s strategy is brilliant. His frontal attack is only a distraction: at the same time, he has one of his guys in the stratosphere attempting to destroy the secret weapon of the enemy and a group of tech specialists deactivating the weapon on firm land. 

Besides Mark Hammill (Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars”) and William Shatner (captain Kirk in “Star Trek”) and other famous Hollywood stars, this time we get to see Patrick Stewart (captain Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: the Next Generation”). What could all of these Hollywood stars have in common? And why were they abducted at the beginning of the miniseries? Mark Millar has found a way to balance pop culture references, parody and homages in one sweeping narrative. 

Although, it seems to me, that there is something else going on here. Millar has explained that when he was 12 years old he sent a letter to Dave Gibbons, suggesting to the legendary British artist to work on a new series created by himself (the kid had promised that he could do something even greater than Watchmen, which Gibbons had just finished drawing). Obviously, back then Dave Gibbons knew that no 12-year-old could write anything memorable, but he still replied with a very encouraging letter.

Millar had to wait for decades until he was one of the most important and influential authors of the industry, and finally he had the opportunity to work in a project with Gibbons. Millar has expressed his admiration for Watchmen, and just like the secret plan of Ozymandias demanded the kidnapping of certain scientists, artists and thinkers throughout the world, the plan of the antihero in “The Secret Service” also demands the capture of cultural icons. In both cases, the prisoners are kept alive for a very specific purpose. I’ve really enjoyed this parallelism, which happens to have a very humorous approach.

Dave Gibbons draws some very good pages, like the ones that depict the final and violent confrontation between Gary and one of his opponents. The scenes of the worldwide orgy, deemed in the comic as “19 minutes of world peace” are also priceless. And thus, this miniseries comes to an end.

El mejor espía de la corona británica está muerto, y ahora le toca a su sobrino Gary salvar no sólo Inglaterra sino también al resto del mundo. En el capítulo final de "El servicio secreto", Gary decide que para hallar aliados debe buscarlos no en las filas oficiales del servicio secreto sino en las instalaciones de entrenamiento. Es por eso que recluta a muchos de sus compañeros de clase, y juntos lanzan un último ataque desesperado, casi suicida, en el cuartel general del enemigo.

La estrategia de Gary es brillante. Su ataque frontal es sólo una distracción: al mismo tiempo, tiene a uno de sus chicos en la estratósfera intentando destruir el arma secreta del enemigo y a un grupo de tecno-especialistas desactivando el arma en tierra firma.

Además de Mark Hammill (Luke Skywalker en “Star Wars”) y William Shatner (el capitán Kirk en “Star Trek”) y otras famosas estrellas de Hollywood, esta vez nos encontramos con Patrick Stewart (el capitán Jean-Luc Picard en “Star Trek: the Next Generation”). ¿Qué podrían tener en común todas estas estrellas de Hollywood? ¿Y por qué fueron secuestrados al comienzo de la miniserie? Mark Millar ha encontrado una manera de balancear referencias a la cultura pop, parodias y homenajes en una cautivante narrativa. 

Aunque, me parece a mí, hay algo más aquí. Millar ha explicado que cuando tenía 12 años le envió una carta a Dave Gibbons, sugiriéndole al legendario artista británico que trabajasen en una nueva serie creada por él mismo (el chiquillo había prometido que haría algo aún más grandioso que "Watchmen", obra que Gibbons acababa de dibujar). Obviamente, en ese entonces Dave Gibbons sabía que ningún doceañero podría escribir algo memorable, pero aun así respondió con una misiva muy alentadora. 

Millar tuvo que esperar por décadas hasta que llegó a ser uno de los autores más importantes e influyentes de la industria, y finalmente tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar en este proyecto con Gibbons. Millar ha expresado su admiración por "Watchmen", y al igual que el plan secreto de Ozymandias demandaba el secuestro de ciertos científicos, artistas y pensadores a lo largo del mundo, el plan del antihéroe en "El servicio secreto" también demanda la captura de íconos culturales. En ambos casos, los prisioneros son mantenidos con vida para un propósito muy específico. Realmente he disfrutado este paralelismo, que tiene un enfoque muy humorístico. 


Dave Gibbons dibuja algunas páginas muy buenas, como las que retratan la violenta confrontación final entre Gary y uno de sus oponentes. Las escenas de la orgía mundial, considerada en el cómic como “19 minutos de paz mundial” son también de primera. Y de este modo, esta miniserie llega a su fin.

Some teenagers are intensely melancholic, apathetic even. They seem to float around the world without ever touching anyone. Without ever compromising, without ever taking the risk of letting people in: I used to be like that. And Shinji Ikari, of course, is like that.

After two volumes and literally hundreds of pages, he hasn’t even smiled once. And suddenly, just after he’s about to embark home with Misato Katsuragi, he runs into Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida, perhaps his only two friends. It is in that moment, after fooling around with the guys, that Shinji finally laughs. It is a sound that Misato had never heard before. 

Remembering the past / Recordando el pasado

“I guess maybe I was just going through the motions of living”, Shinji confesses. And that reminds me of a great line from Nicole Kidman in The Hours: “My life has been stolen from me. I'm living in a town I have no wish to live in. I'm living a life I have no wish to live”. I felt completely identified with that phrase for most of my adolescence. So I understood Shinji perfectly, I knew what it felt like to go through the motions, to accept life as an obligation instead of an opportunity. There are so many philosophical interrogations in stages 13 through 19 (“White Scars”, “The Warped Room”, “What her Crimson Eyes Believe In”, “Abandoned Memories”, “The Night Before Battle”, “Blood Battle” and “The Moon Inside the Darkness”) but also action and interaction between the protagonist and the rest of the cast. 

As the days go by, Misato and her new roommate Shinji learn to share the same house and coexist without unnecessary tensions… The only thing that seems to bother Shinji is the way that Misato hangs around wearing quite revealing clothes. But, wouldn’t it be a boy’s wet dream to live with a sexy woman who has no inhibitions? The thing is that, perhaps, Shinji isn’t like most boys. He isn’t like Toji or Kensuke, who are always chasing girls.

There is a very peculiar scene that takes place in Rei Ayanami’s house. Doctor Ritsuko Akagi has forgotten to give Rei’s new NERV ID card, and so Shinji has to go to her place and deliver the card. He finds a very deteriorated building and as he steps into Rai’s unlocked apartment all he can find are the signs of poverty and abandonment: dusty floors, dirty walls and lots of garbage everywhere. Sure, Shinji doesn’t live in a palace either –on the contrary, Katsuragi’s apartment is very modest– but at least he’s used to a modicum of order and decorum. None of that exists in Rai’s place. These heroes who have saved the world live like everyone else, without luxuries or sophistications –they are, indeed, in the opposite spectrum of traditional Western heroes like the Avengers who live on mansion in Fifth Avenue or the Justice League who reside on a satellite, far above the world, like gods instead of mortal men–.

It is in this filthy space that Rei presents herself naked, and Shinji, out of nervousness trips and falls on top of her. There is a delicious moment of hesitation, almost of sexual tension, when Shinji is on top of her, unable to react, to either move further or remove himself from this strange embrace. Rei, as devoid of emotions as usual, doesn’t do or say anything. Shinji apologizes for intruding and drops the card. And leaves quickly. Is it the taste of unresolved sexual tensions what we –the readers– feel after this sequence? Or is it something else? Something darker and harder to explain?

I can affirm that no such thing as love can exist between this boy and this emotionless girl. But there is complicity. And camaraderie. All of this is made evident when they both face a flying angel –Ramiel– with the form of a rhombus, a creature with the ability to destroy everything within a fifty miles radius. To defeat it, Shinji uses a particle cannon that will consume the entire energy supply of Japan, and Rei will shield him against the lethal energy blast of the angel. Alone, none of them can triumph, together they succeed.

An awkward encounter / Un incómodo encuentro

Algunos adolescentes son intensamente melancólicos, apáticos incluso. Parecen flotar alrededor del mundo sin tocar a nadie. Sin comprometerse, sin arriesgarse a permitir la cercanía del otro: yo era así. Y Shinji Ikari, por supuesto, es así. Después de dos volúmenes y literalmente centenares de páginas, él no ha sonreído ni una vez. Y repentinamente, justo cuando está por embarcarse rumbo a casa con Misato Katsuragi, se topa con Toji Suzuhara y Kensuke Aida, tal vez sus únicos dos amigos. Es en ese momento, después de tontear con los chicos, que Shinji finalmente ríe. Es un sonido que Misato nunca antes había escuchado.

"Supongo que quizás solamente estaba viviendo en automático", confiesa Shinji. Y eso me recuerda una brillante línea de Nicole Kidman en "The Hours": "Mi vida me ha sido robada. Estoy viviendo en un pueblo en el que no deseo vivir. Estoy viviendo una vida que no tengo deseos de vivir". Me sentí completamente identificado con esa frase durante mi adolescencia. Así que entendía a Shinji perfectamente, sabía lo que era vivir en automático, aceptar la vida como una obligación en vez de una oportunidad. Hay tantas interrogantes filosóficas en las etapas 13 a la 19 ("Cicatrices blancas", "La habitación torcida", "Lo que sus ojos carmesí creen", "Memorias abandonadas", "La noche antes de la batalla", "Batalla, sangre" y "La luna dentro de la oscuridad") pero también acción e interacción entre el protagonista y el resto del elenco.

Los días pasan, Misato y Shinji aprenden a compartir la misma casa y a coexistir sin tensiones innecesarias... Lo único que parece causarle molestias a Shinji es que Misato usa ropas muy reveladoras. Pero, ¿no sería el sueño húmedo de todo muchacho vivir con una mujer sexy y sin inhibiciones? El asunto, tal vez, es que Shinji no es como la mayoría de los chicos. Él no es como Toji o Kensuke, que siempre están detrás de las chicas.  

Hay una escena muy peculiar que ocurre en la casa de Rei Ayanami. La doctora Ritsuko Akagi ha olvidado darle a Rei su nuevo tarjeta de identificación de NERV, así es que Shinji tiene que ir a su casa y entregarle la tarjeta. Él encuentra un edificio muy deteriorado y al entrar al departamento de Rei lo único que ve son señales de pobreza y abandono: pisos polvorientos, muros sucios y basura por doquier. De hecho, Shinji tampoco vive en un palacio -al contrario, el departamento de Katsuragi es muy modesto- pero al menos está acostumbrado a un mínimo de orden y decoro. Nada de esto existe en la habitación de Rei. Estos héroes que han salvado el mundo viven como cualquier otra persona, sin lujos ni sofisticaciones -ellos están, por cierto, en el espectro opuesto de los tradicionales héroes occidentales como los Vengadores que viven en una mansión en la Quinta Avenida o los de la Liga de la Justicia que residen en un satélite, muy por encima del mundo, como dioses en vez de mortales-.

Es en este mugriento lugar en el que Rei aparece desnuda y Shinji, por puro nerviosismo, se tropieza y se cae encima de ella. Hay un momento delicioso de incerti-dumbre, casi de tensión sexual, cuando Shinji está encima de ella, incapaz de reaccionar, de dar un paso más o un paso atrás. Rei, tan desprovista de emociones como siempre, no hace ni dice nada. Shinji se disculpa por haber entrado sin permiso y deja la tarjeta. Y se va rápidamente. ¿Lo que sentimos -nosotros los lectores- después de esta secuencia es el sabor de las tensiones sexuales no resueltas? ¿O es algo más? ¿Algo más oscuro y más arduo de explicar?

Puedo afirmar que algo como el amor no puede existir entre este chico y esta chica sin emociones. Pero hay complicidad. Y camaradería. Todo esto se hace evidente cuando ambos se enfrentan contra un ángel volador –Ramiel– que tiene la forma de un rombo, una criatura con la habilidad de destruirlo todo en un radio de 50 millas. Para derrotarlo, Shinji usa un cañón de partículas que consumirá todo el suministro eléctrico de Japón, y Rei será su escudo contra el letal rayo de energía del ángel. Solo, ninguno de ellos puede triunfar; juntos logran la victoria.

Young Avengers # 1 - Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

Allan Heinberg’s groundbreaking Young Avengers series introduced to the Marvel Universe a unique and refreshing group of teenaged heroes. I’ve already talked about how much the Young Avengers meant to me, when I first encountered them around 2006, a couple of years after the first issue came out. In many ways, Heinberg’s work is what brought me back to Marvel comics, and now after a considerable hiatus Kieron Gillen’s reinvention of the team has made me a Marvel fan again. ‘Nuff said. 

I wasn’t sure about the virtues of this new iteration of the group: Would it retain the emotional intensity of Heinberg’s scripts? Would it portray teenagers with honesty? Would it make me and other readers question established concepts? Would it be a beacon of hope, in a land infested with intolerance and discrimination? I am glad to say that the answer to all these questions is a resounding YES. 

I’ve read a lot of Marvel NOW first issues, and this is by far the best. I can’t believe how excited I felt when I saw Marvel Boy and Kate Bishop doing what every teenager wants to do: fucking. Although, of course, this is sex in outer space that gets interrupted by a Skrull attack, but still things work out in the end. Last time I read about Marvel Boy was in Grant Morrison’s brilliant miniseries. And I think after him no one knew how to write about Noh-Varr, but Gillen has found his true voice, updating it a little bit, but retaining the “alien boy” concept that Morrison so splendidly developed.

But before approving Gillen as the new Young Avengers writer there was the ultimate test: Billy Kaplan and Teddy Altman. Luckily for us, the author understands perfectly well how important they are, and what makes a team of juvenile heroes work so well within the boundaries of the Marvel Universe: “Its optimism. Its intelligence. Its characters and its genuine emotions for one another. One of modern comics most compelling couples”.

Last time we saw “modern comics most compelling couple”, Wiccan had been depressed for months and had stopped being a superhero. The Young Avengers had disbanded. Now, Hulkling is still patrolling the nights, helping people. And when Wiccan finds out, they argue about it. But they make up quickly and, of course, make out too.     

I’ve always admired Jim Cheung’s art, and I was very worried about Jamie McKelvie. Honestly, I didn’t think he could simply step in and make Jim’s characters his own. But he pulls that off in an instant. This isn’t the team that Allan and Jim brought to us, this is a new team, and McKelvie is the ideal artist for it. His neat lines and his clean designs are amazing, but there is something else, in every panel, in every image, you feel how much he loves these characters. His illustrations transmit such a strong emotional resonance. And Matthew Wilson’s colors complement and enhance the art impeccably, while adding the right touch of warmness.

I guess only a couple of British creators could awaken in me so much enthusiasm. I have to admit that it took me a while to decide which cover to buy. In the end I chose the Bryan Lee O’Malley variant. There was just something quite alluring about it. I don’t know if it was the night club / disco vibe it had, or the childish innocence of Kid Loki, or the sweaty expression of Ms. America, or perhaps the sexually charged pose of Wiccan and Hulking, and the way they can’t stop touching each other on the dancing floor. Well, whatever it was, it sure captured my attention. And I hope it also captured yours.

Billy Kaplan & Teddy Altman

"Young Avengers", la innovadora serie de Allan Heinberg, fue el punto de partida de un refrescante grupo de héroes adolescentes. Estos "Young Avengers" significaron mucho para mí, cuando los encontré por primera vez en el 2006, un par de años después del inicio de la colección. De un modo u otro, la obra de Heinberg es lo que me hizo regresar a Marvel comics, y ahora luego de un considerable hiato, la reinvención del equipo a manos de Gillen me ha hecho un fan de Marvel otra vez. Ya dije suficiente.

No estaba seguro sobre las virtudes de esta nueva encarnación del equipo: ¿conservaría la intensidad emocional de los guiones de Heinberg? ¿Retrataría a los adolescentes con honestidad? ¿Lograría que yo y otros lectores cuestionemos conceptos establecidos? ¿Sería un faro de esperanza, en una región infestada de intolerancia y discriminación? Me alegra decir que la respuesta a todas estas preguntas es un sonoro SÍ. 

He leído muchos de los primeros números de Marvel NOW, y este es de lejos el mejor. No puedo creer lo emocionado que me sentí cuando vi a Marvel Boy y Kate Bishop haciendo lo que todo adolescente quiere: follar. Aunque, desde luego, esto es sexo en el espacio exterior, con la interrupción de un ataque Skrull, pero igual las cosas se nivelan al final. La última vez que leí sobre Marvel Boy fue en la brillante miniserie de Grant Morrison. Y creo que después de él nadie supo cómo escribir a Noh-Varr, pero Gillen ha encontrado su verdadera voz, actualizándola un poco, pero manteniendo el concepto de "chico alien" que Morrison desarrolló de manera espléndida.

Pero antes de aprobar a Gillen como el nuevo escritor de "Young Avengers", quedaba la última evaluación: Billy Kaplan y Teddy Altman. Por suerte para nosotros, el autor entiende a la perfección lo importantes que son, y qué es lo que hace que un equipo de héroes juveniles funcione tan bien en los confines del universo Marvel: "Su optimismo. Su inteligencia. Sus personajes y las emociones genuinas del uno por el otro. Una de las parejas más cautivadoras de los cómics modernos".

La última vez que vimos a "la pareja más cautivadora de los cómics modernos", Wiccan había estado deprimido por meses y había abandonado su rol de súper-héroe. Los Jóvenes Vengadores se habían desintegrado. Ahora, Hulkling sigue patrullando por las noches, ayudando a la gente. Y cuando Wiccan se entera, discuten. Pero se reconcilian y, por supuesto, también se besan.

Siempre he admirado el arte de Jim Cheung, y estaba muy preocupado por Jamie McKelvie. Lo digo con honestidad: no pensé que él podría entrar al juego y apropiarse de los personajes de Jim. Pero lo consigue en un instante. Este no es el equipo de Allan y Jim, es uno nuevo, y McKelvie es el artista ideal. Sus líneas nítidas y sus diseños limpios son asombrosos, pero hay algo más, en cada viñeta, en cada imagen, uno siente que él adora a estos personajes. Sus ilustraciones transmiten una resonancia emocional. Y los colores de Matthew Wilson complementan y mejoran el arte de manera impecable, mientras que añaden el toque justo de calidez.

Supongo que sólo una pareja de creadores británicos podría despertar en mí tanto entusiasmo. Debo admitir que me tomó un buen rato decidir qué portada comprar. Al final, elegí la variante de Bryan Lee O’Malley. Había algo seductor en ella. No sé si sea la vibra discoteca / club nocturno, la inocencia infantil de Kid Loki, o la expresión sudorosa de Ms. America, o tal vez la pose con carga sexual de Wiccan y Hulking, y la manera en la que no pueden dejar de tocarse el uno al otro en la pista de baile. Bueno, lo que sea que haya sido, capturó del todo mi atención. Y espero que también capture la vuestra.

The Secret Service # 4 - Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons

Gary is good with guns, lethal in hand-to-hand combat and a fast driver. Nevertheless, he lacks the proper elegance and distinguished demeanor of a James Bond. In order to become a spy for the British Crown, he must reinvent himself under the guidance of his uncle Jack. 

Many things happen in this fourth installment of Millar’s Secret Service. First of all, we see Jack teaching his nephew how to dress like a gentleman. Then, he forces Gary to pass one final test after administering him a somniferous substance. The teenager, then, wakes up in Colombia, undressed, with no money and no weapons. It is under these conditions that he must reach a certain address in which he’ll find a plane ticket to return to England.

Gary is quickly intercepted by a police officer, who plans to arrest him under charges of indecent exposure. He even accuses the youngster of being involved in gay activities. Surely, this could be construed as a funny scene about an aggressive macho cop and a disoriented young man. Nevertheless, I think the partial male nudity observed by the police officer is enough to elicit in him the fear of the otherness, the fear of homosexuality. For the man of the law, homosexuality in expressed in a personality, a life style, but also a morphology that entails an indiscreet anatomy (in this case Gary’s state of undress). 

Without knowledge of the language, Gary must do everything he can to avoid being arrested and to locate the required house. When he gets there he realizes that this house is owned by one of Colombia’s most sought-after drug lords, with a small army at his disposal. Gary must either kill them all or die trying. As in the previous issues, Dave Gibbons does an amazing work. The action scenes, the exotic locations and the behavior of the characters are enhanced by the stylistic choices of one of Britain’s most respected and awarded artists. There are still plenty of mysteries to be resolved before this miniseries concludes, and I’m impatient to hold in my hands the next issue.

Gary es bueno con las armas, letal en combate mano a mano y un veloz conductor. No obstante, carece de la elegancia y la actitud distinguida de un James Bond. Para convertirse en un espía de la corona británica, él debe reinventarse a sí mismo bajo la tutela de su tío Jack.

Suceden muchas cosas en este cuarto capítulo de "Secret Service" de Millar. En primer lugar, vemos a Jack enseñándole a su sobrino cómo vestirse como un caballero. Luego, obliga a Gary a pasar un último test luego de administrarle una sustancia somnífera. El adolecente, entonces, despierta en Colombia, desvestido, sin dinero y sin armas. Es bajo estas condiciones que debe llegar a un lugar en el que encontrará un boleto de avión para regresar a Inglaterra.

Gary es rápidamente interceptado por un oficial de la policía, quien planea arrestarlo bajo cargos de exposición indecente. Incluso acusa al jovencito de estar involucrado en actividades gay. Seguramente, esto podría ser visto como una escena chistosa sobre un policía machista y agresivo y un joven desorientado. No obstante, creo que la desnudez parcial masculina observada por el policía es suficiente para provocar en él un miedo hacia la otredad, un miedo hacia la homosexualidad. Para el hombre de la ley, la homosexualidad es expresada en una personalidad, en un estilo de vida, pero también en una morfología que implica una anatomía indiscreta (en el caso de Gary sería estar medio desvestido).

Sin conocer el idioma, Gary debe hacer todo lo que puede para evitar ser arrestado y localizar la casa a la que debe llegar. Cuando llega allí, se da cuenta que la residencia es propiedad de uno de los más buscados señores de la droga de Colombia, con un pequeño ejército a su disposición. Gary debe matarlos a todos o morir intentándolo. Al igual que en números anteriores, Dave Gibbons hace un asombroso trabajo. Las escenas de acción, las locaciones exóticas y el comportamiento de los personajes son aumentados por las opciones estilísticas de uno de los más respetados y premiados artistas británicos. Aún hay muchos misterios por resolver antes de la conclusión de la miniserie, y estoy impaciente por ver qué pasará.

Eager to fulfill properly my promise here I am again, writing in the most enthusiastic way that I can possibly conceive today. Iris Murdoch wrote once “Love is the general name of the quality of attachment and it is capable of infinite degradation and it is the source of our greatest errors”. 

And I think that above all kind of erroneous conceptions love and desire, at least in psychoanalytic terms, are not always equivalent. I would like to start thinking again in a more optimistic way. 

John Donne said “Nobody is an island, no man is complete within himself; each person is a portion of the continent, a part of the Earth; if the ocean takes away but one part of the land, all Europe gets diminished, as if it were a promontory, or the house of one of your friends, or your own house; the death of any man diminishes me for I am attached to the Humanity; and therefore never ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for you”. 

And as Shakespeare would affirm “O how this spring of love resembleth the uncertain glory of an April day; which now shows all the beauty of the sun and by, and by a cloud takes all away”.

In Hamlet the British author wrote: “Oh God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and still count myself as a king of infinite space”. A person’s mind can be a world within itself. And sometimes it is very hard to know what is the right thing to do. All the important things are complex by nature, and that makes it especially difficult for people to choose the right way.

Pablo Patrucco

Ayer viernes aproveché que estaba en San Isidro por cuestiones coyunturales, para darme una vuelta por la Galería Enlace. Se inauguraba la muestra “Materia oscura” del genial artista Pablo Patrucco. Ya sea en muestras colectivas en la misma galería o en la casona barranquina de 80M2, ya había tenido oportunidad de ver trabajos suyos y siempre me habían fascinado. 

Hay una belleza real en su obra, el tipo de belleza que podemos encontrar en eventos cotidianos, en el día a día, en momentos mundanos. Sin embargo, lejos de mostrarnos algo “común”, la fuerza de los cuadros de Patrucco consiste en hurgar de manera mucho más honda y profunda, hasta llegar a la raíz misma de ese algo indefinible que llamamos mestizaje o peruanidad.

Como un voyeur, Pablo captura imágenes de personas al azar, en una playa, en una calle, y elimina todo los fondos, todo referente geográfico y se queda solamente con la figura. Se trata de hombres y mujeres, niños y niñas que no saben que están siendo mirados, y sin embargo el retrato que hace el artista sobre ellos es tan fidedigno, rico y cautivante que nosotros, o bien nos sentimos identificados con ellos, o bien nos imaginamos en las situaciones y en los escenarios de los que han sido despojados. 

Con más de doscientos cuadros, la obra de Pablo capta con ojo agudo y sobre todo una lúcida mirada crítica a los habitantes de la Lima de hoy, una ciudad sobrepoblada, casi al borde del colapso, con millones de rostros anónimos a los que rara vez prestamos atención. Aquí, sin embargo, somos testigos de un crisol que absorbe todas las razas y todos los niveles socioeconómicos, y gracias al estilo fotográfico e hiperrealista de los dibujos a lápiz y carboncillo de Pablo, no necesitamos soñar con esa noción abstracta que es la Lima de hoy, basta con admirarla, sobresaltados o compungidos, en los 200 cuadros que Pablo ha elaborado en el transcurso de cuatro años. Sin duda, se trata de una de las más fascinantes muestras que he visto en el 2012, y si tuviera que elegir una sola, elegiría “Materia oscura” como la mejor del año.

En el transcurso de la noche me encontré con Renzo Núñez Melgar Vega, con quien comenté los últimos acontecimientos de The Walking Dead, también me encontré con Hugo Salazar, quien me comentó que por fin había leído el texto que escribí sobre su muestra hace ya un año. Me agradeció por haberle dedicado un espacio en mi blog y me dijo que le había gustado lo que había escrito, y sus palabras me hicieron recordar que a pesar de que esta página es más que nada sobre cómics, el arte contemporáneo peruano nunca debe faltar, porque este es el medio en el que nos desenvolvemos. 

Por supuesto, felicité a Pablo Patrucco por tan extraordinaria exposición. Y me quedé hablando un rato con Didi Arteta y Roberto Ascóniga, director de Enlace. En el transcurso de la noche también me encontré con Rhony Alhalel, Ilse Rehder, Isabelle Decencière  Carmen Alegre; y me quedé conversando un buen rato con mi gran amigo Rafael Velázquez y también con Noah Alhalel, ambos reirrojinos como yo. El lunes regreso a Enlace para ver la muestra con más calma. Hay tantos detalles en cada uno de estos cuadros que podría quedarme horas contemplándolos. Una maravilla.

Los dejo con dos de los doscientos cuadros de Pablo Patrucco, un dibujito mío sobre un fulano que juega golf mientras el cadáver de un perro lo acosa, y las infaltables fotos del último almuerzo en mi casa. En esta ocasión los afortunados fueron María Fe Celi y Juan Carlos Gibson, amigos de toda la vida; esta vez decidí cocinar una entrada y un plato de fondo que se pueden hacer a la parrilla (cebolla rellena, lomo marinado en cáscara de naranja y croquetas de camote), además, Juan Carlos tuvo la amabilidad de traer una botella de Cabernet Sauvignon y María Fe a su vez trajo un exquisito postre de Dolce Capriccio. Todo un banquete.

“Who’s Scaring Stevie?” takes the seemingly harmless topic of a platonic romance between teachers and students to the next level. Indeed, when Stevie Hunter starts receiving menacing phone calls, the mystery begins. Who’s the culprit? Who is the man obsessed with Stevie? The New Mutants insist on helping their teacher, and so, soon enough, combining technology, powers and their own savvy, the responsible of these phone calls is caught: Peter Bristow, a red-haired teenager.

As Danielle gets into Peter’s mind and draws out his innermost fears, the New Mutants are able to actually see what’s going on inside Peter’s brain. And what they see is horrifying: Peter had been physically abused by his father over and over again. And as a result, he had associated pain and suffering with everlasting parental love… And due to his feelings towards Stevie, a mixture of boyish love but also sexual attraction, he had placed himself in the position of the ‘bad boy’ so that he could be hurt again, this time by his own teacher.   

This masochistic tendency obeys to a particular position in the sexual structure: Peter voluntarily turns into the instrument of the Other's will of jouissance. The pervert is the person in whom the structure of the sexual drive is most clearly revealed, and also the person who carries the attempt to take the pleasure principle to the limit "he who goes as far as he can along the path of jouissance", as Lacan would say. It’s no wonder, then, that after surpassing all limits and barriers, Peter finally experiences the dire consequences.

In subsequent chapters, the New Mutants accidentally run into Viper and Silver Samurai, and combat ensues. Nevertheless, what interests me the most about these episodes is the fatherly role assumed by Charles Xavier. Professor X had always been a figure of authority for the original X-Men, a mentor, a leader, but here he’s also a father. And as a father he needs that which had been absent before: a female partner, or in other words, a mother. So if Xavier is the primordial father, it’s up to the Empress Lilandra to assume the motherly role.

Lilandra, former empress of the Shi’ar Empire -the woman who decided to kill Xavier’s favorite pupil, Jean Grey- is now a sweet and docile woman that takes care of Xavier’s putative children. She makes sandwiches for them and she feels compelled to help them. She is, indeed, the mother. And so Xavier must severe the link between his children and the mother, he must be the nom de père, the name of the father, the law, the tautological no. Professor X is adamant in his decisions, and sometimes his students hate him for that. But that’s what it’s like to be in a family. You hate and love your parents. There’s no way around it. And you can’t have only love, or only hate. 

When the New Mutants spend a few days in Rio de Janeiro, visiting Roberto Da Costa’s parents, they encounter a dysfunctional family. Indeed, Roberto’s father is a ruthless businessman who thinks only about profits, while his wife is an idealistic archeologist that doesn’t seem to care much for money. Roberto’s mother is also an ecologist avant la lettre: “each year, more of the Amazon basin -the greatest rain forest on Earth- is destroyed beyond all hope of reclamation. You and those like you are endangering -perhaps sacrificing- the future so that you may rule the present”, she tells his husband.

I say avant la lettre because this was written 30 years ago, when ecological movements were not nearly as popular as they are now. Claremont, ahead of his time, had reasons to be concerned about the greenhouse effect; furthermore, he hinted at what is now a consolidated reality: today Brazil is no longer a simple South-American country, is one of the most powerful and richest nations, so it was only fitting to have a Brazilian character who represented wealth and power.

Let’s not forget Bob McLeod’s amazing art. I think that, perhaps, inspired by John Byrne’s approach, Bob succeeded in creating original designs for the New Mutants. Byrne had said once that he could draw all of the X-Men wearing regular clothes and no one would have a problem identifying each one of them. Bob manages to accomplish the same here, and when we see this group of teenagers wearing street clothes, we’re always aware of who’s who. And just like Byrne, Bob is also responsible for the gestures and expressions that flesh out characters that, otherwise, would be less unique (there is also a peculiar homage to the ‘wonder teen of the 80s’, a red-haired boy with freckles and round glasses that seemed to populate the pages of either DC or Marvel Comics at the time). Cuando Danielle ingresa a la mente de Peter y extrae sus mayores miedos, los Nuevos Mutantes ven algo que los horroriza: Peter había sufrido abuso físico de parte de su padre repetidas veces. Y como resultado, él había asociado el dolor y el sufrimiento con el siempre duradero amor paterno... y a causa de sus sentimientos hacia Stevie, una mezcla de amor adolescente pero también de atracción sexual, él había asumido la posición del 'chico malo' para poder ser herido nuevamente, esta vez, por su propia profesora.

Esta tendencia masoquista obedece a una posición particular en la estructura sexual. Peter voluntariamente se transforma en el instrumento de la voluntad de goce del Otro. El perverso es la persona en quien la estructura de la pulsión sexual está claramente revelada, y también la persona que intenta llevar el principio de placer hasta el límite "aquel que va tan lejos como es posible en el sendero del goce", como diría Lacan. No es extraño, entonces, que luego de sobrepasar todos los límites y barreras, Peter finalmente experimente las terribles consecuencias.

En capítulos subsiguientes, los Nuevos Mutantes accidentalmente llegan a entablar combate con Viper y Silver Samurai. No obstante, lo que me interesa más en estos episodios es el rol paterno asumido por Charles Xavier. El Professor X siempre había sido una figura de autoridad para los X-Men originales, un mentor, un líder, pero aquí también es un padre. Y como padre necesita aquello que antes había estado ausente: una compañera, o en otras palabras, una madre. Así que si Xavier es el padre primordial, le toca a la emperatriz Lilandra asumir el rol materno.

Lilandra, antigua emperatriz del imperio Shi’ar -la mujer que decidió matar a la pupila predilecta de Xavier, Jean Grey- es ahora una dulce y dócil mujer que se preocupa por los hijos putativos de Xavier. Hasta les prepara sanguchitos y se siente obligada a ayudarlos. Es de hecho una madre. Y por ello Xavier debe cercenar el vínculo entre sus hijos y la madre, él debe ser el nom de père, el nombre del padre, la ley, el no tautológico. El Profesor X es severo en sus decisiones, y a veces sus estudiantes lo odian por eso. Pero así es como sucede en toda familia. Odias y amas a tus padres. Las dos cosas. Y no puedes solamente amar, o solamente odiar.

Cuando los Nuevos Mutantes pasan algunos días en Río de Janeiro, visitando a los padres de Roberto Da Costa, encuentran una familia disfuncional. De hecho, el padre de Roberto es un cruel hombre de negocios que piensa sólo en sus ganancias, mientras que su esposa es una arqueóloga idealista a la que no parece importarle el dinero. La madre de Roberto es también una ecologista avant la lettre: "cada año, más de la cuenca amazónica -el bosque tropical más grande de la Tierra- es destruida por encima de toda esperanza de reclamo. Tú y los que son como tú están poniendo en peligro -tal vez sacrificando- el futuro para poder reinar en el presente", le dice a su marido.

Y digo avant la lettre porque esto fue escrito hace 30 años, cuando los movimientos ecológicos no eran tan populares como ahora. Claremont, adelantándose a nuestros tiempos, tuvo razones para preocuparse por el efecto invernadero; más aún, dio pistas sobre lo que hoy es una realidad consolidada: actualmente Brazil ya no es un simple país latinoamericano, sino una de las naciones más poderosas y ricas, así que tenía sentido incluir a un personaje brasilero que representara el dinero y el poder.

No olvidemos el asombroso arte de Bob McLeod. Creo que, tal vez inspirado por el enfoque de John Byrne, Bob tuvo éxito al crear los diseños originales para los Nuevos Mutantes. Byrne dijo alguna vez que podía dibujar a todos los X-Men usando ropa de calle y nadie tendría problemas en identificar quién era quién. Bob se las arregla para lograr lo mismo aquí, y cuando vemos a este grupo de adolescentes usando ropas comunes y corrientes, siempre sabemos quién es quién. Y al igual que Byrne, Bob es también responsable de los gestos y expresiones que le dan vida a estos personajes que, de otro modo, serían menos únicos (hay también un peculiar homenaje al 'adolescente maravilla de los 80', un chico pelirrojo, con pecas y anteojos redondos que parecía poblar las páginas de DC y Marvel en estos años). May Comic Books / Cómics de mayo

Slightly later than usual, here I present you last month’s comics. I still haven’t finished to read all of them, but I’d rather make this post now. America’s Got Powers continues to be amazing, the first issue of Mind the Gap is very promising, plus the art is great. In the Free Comic Book Day front there’s plenty of good stuff: Graphic Elvis with art by the incomparable John Cassaday (I’ll buy anything with his name on it), The Hypernaturals was everything I love about the Legion of Super-Heroes; I truly enjoyed the Archaia graphic novel anthology, not only is it a very nice hardcover edition with lots of interesting stories, but also it’s completely free. But if I had to choose the best book of the month it would be Morning Glories # 18, a powerful and haunting story about the forbidden love of two young boys who meet again years later only to realize that passion can still prevail. As a writer, Nick Spencer surprises us with an unforgettable story about teenagers trapped in a school that keeps murdering its own students. And here are May comics as per solicitations:

Ligeramente más tarde de lo habitual, aquí les presento los cómics del mes pasado. Todavía no termino de leer todo, pero empecemos de una vez. America’s Got Powers continúa asombrándome, el primer número de Mind the Gap es muy prometedor y tiene un artista de primera. En cuanto a los cómics del Free Comic Book Day hay muchas cosas buenas: Graphic Elvis con arte del incomparable John Cassaday (compro todos los cómics que él dibuja), The Hypernaturals fue todo lo que me gusta de la Legión de Súper-Héroes; realmente disfruté la novela gráfica de Archaia, además de ser una cuidada edición en tapa dura con muchas historias interesantes, también es completamente gratuita. Pero si tuviera que elegir el mejor título del mes sería Morning Glories # 18, una poderosa y evocadora historia sobre el amor prohibido entre dos chiquillos que se reencuentran años después y descubren que la pasión aún puede prevalecer. Como escritor, Nick Spencer nos sorprende con un inolvidable relato sobre adolescentes atrapados en un colegio que asesina a sus propios estudiantes.
