Miracleman: Apocrypha # 3 - Gaiman, Buckingham, Moore, Ross et al.

In the third and final, “The Library of Olympus”, Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham show the very few daily operations Miracleman himself supervises. “The world seems at ease, knowing that although I am here, high in the sky, I am not about to arrive unannounced in their homes or lives. And I feel more comfortable maintaining my distance”, explains Miracleman. Once again the gap between the god and the normal people widens. For this issue, Buckingham pays homage to a Jack Kirby cover for Fantastic Four # 5.

In many interviews, Alan Moore has praised the work of his good friend and mentor Steve Moore (no relation). Both Moores worked for 2000AD, and honed their craft in the pages of this weekly sci-fi anthology. As much as I have enjoyed reading some stories written by Steve Moore, I didn’t realize how incredibly talented he is until today. “Wishing on a Star” is the best story in the Apocrypha miniseries, and also one of the best ones I’ve read in the past 5 years (and I’ve read hundreds and hundreds of comics in since 2015). 

“Wishing on a Star” is fully painted by the extraordinary artist Alex Ross. Every page boasts the unmistakable style of Ross, the calm and serene beauty that befits this story. When Tim Richards talks about Miracleman’s new world he affirms that “This new world seems so desirable and yet… from the bottom of my heart I feel a great revulsion for its utopian new order. War and starvation are ended, but at the cost if freedom – the freedom of mankind to make its own mistakes”. We might understand what the cost of freedom is on abstract terms, but this particular story is a heartbreaking tale about a man who defends the right of making his own mistakes, an astronaut who remembers nostalgically the days in which people would try to reach the stars. Now that Miracleman controls the world, things such as NASA have disappeared, or have become obsolete. But if people’s passion for discovering new places and traveling to unreachable destinations is, indeed, a thing of the past, then what kind of future awaits mankind?

Alex Ross

Steve Moore presents a Miracleman that tries to understand the human perspective from his godlike position, and he even tries to help this man achieve his dream of reaching the stars on his own, relying on nothing else but the technology humans created, back when creating was still allowed, before Miracleman took control of every nation on the globe. It’s hard to describe how fast this story unfolds, from the seemingly simple idea of an astronaut aiming for the stars, to a struggle that deeply touches the heart of the human condition. “Wishing on a Star” is so masterfully told, and so beautifully illustrated, that will make you burst into tears. 

“A Bright and Sunny Day” is written by Fred Schiller and wonderfully illustrated and colored by Val Mayerik. This story takes place in the past, when Kid Miracleman was still heroic and noble, and a loyal sidekick to Miracleman. Kid Miracleman encounters a scientist who has been exposed to a radiation that makes him move at superspeed, the only problem is that he is also aging at a rhythm of an entire year in a matter of minutes. Thanks to Mayerik’s extraordinary art we can see how the scientist ages from panel to panel, and we also see the concern of Kid Miracleman, who tries to find Miracleman and does everything he can to help this man, but nothing seems to work. The young hero decides to spend as much time as possible with the scientist. In a matter of hours, the scientist ages decades. In this fascinating and touching story, the boy sees how the old man will go to the grave with many regrets, and with many unfulfilled wishes.

Finally, “Gospel” reunites writer Steve Grant and artist Darick Robertson. Every book every published can be found in the library of Olympus, and in this story we see a man submitting a manuscript to the library of Olympus, and being rejected. However, this is no ordinary man, he is a leader in a religious cult that worships Johnny Bates. Moore and Gaiman had suggested that, indeed, there would be people more willing to worship an evil force of destruction like Bates instead of embracing Miracleman as their savior and guide. It’s interesting to observe how Robertson’s art, although good, isn’t as impressive as it would be a decade later. The final page of this issue is an illustration by Melinda Gebbie, which is also connected to the last scene in the library of Olympus, in which Miracleman and Miraclewoman reflect on the perfect world they’re building for the people of Earth.

En la tercera y última, “La biblioteca del Olimpo”, Neil Gaiman y Mark Buckingham muestran las pocas operaciones diarias que supervisa el propio Miracleman. “El mundo parece estar tranquilo, sabiendo que aunque estoy aquí, en lo alto del cielo, no voy a llegar sin avisar en sus hogares o vidas. Y me siento más cómodo manteniendo mi distancia”, explica Miracleman. Una vez más, la brecha entre el dios y la gente normal se ensancha. Para este número, Buckingham rinde homenaje a una portada de Jack Kirby para el Fantastic Four # 5.

En muchas entrevistas, Alan Moore ha elogiado el trabajo de su buen amigo y mentor Steve Moore (sin parentesco). Ambos Moores trabajaron para 2000AD y perfeccionaron su oficio en las páginas de esta antología semanal de ciencia ficción. Miracleman: Apocrypha # 2 - Gaiman, Buckingham, Busiek, Smith et al.

In 2012, I bought the first issue of Alan Moore’s Miracleman and I was immediately fascinated by it. After that I bought as many issues as I could, but those old Eclipse Comics editions were rather expensive, and after issue # 5 I had to stop. My budget could not allow more purchases. I was incredibly excited when Marvel Comics started reediting Miracleman, mainly because that meant I would be able to get the entire Alan Moore run for a reasonable price. And so I did. However, Marvel did not and will not reprint Miracleman: Apocrypha, so I had to find the original editions (which, fortunately, were a bit pricey but not out of my reach), and I’m so happy that I did.

Mark Buckingham

“The Library of Olympus”, by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham, focuses on a Miracleman intent on understanding normal people through fiction, and more precisely, through the 9th art: “Today I return to their comic books. I regret that one branch of the art-form is almost dead; burnt out. Superman and Batman, Spider-Man and the X-Men: all of them have returned to comic book limbo, the silent abode of the no-longer published; remembered only by collectors and historians”. In the end, Miracleman concludes “Stories. Give me your stories… and I, in my turn, will try to understand you”. Buckingham is also in charge of the covers of the miniseries, and in this opportunity he pays homage to John Byrne’s Man of Steel # 1.

Mark Buckingham

“Prodigal” is a fascinating story written by Kurt Busiek and penciled and inked by Christopher Schenck. In the same way that Busiek paid attention to normal people in Marvels or Astro City, in “Prodigal”, the protagonist is a teenager who runs away from home and goes to the city, the place in which the social and cultural transformation promoted by Miracleman is already taking place. Busiek does the same that Gaiman did during his Golden Age arc: he plunges deep into the mind of a normal individual pitted against an extraordinary world designed by a god, Miracleman, who understands very little about human life. In a world that is supposed to be perfect, people still experience frustration and existential emptiness on levels they never experienced before. Not even when the protagonist has the chance to explore his sexuality, does he find solace in this new world. The end of the story is tragic and brutal, and yet it makes perfect sense.

Stefan Petrucha and Broderick Macaraeg come up with “Stray Thoughts”, a lighthearted and somewhat whimsical story about Miraclewoman, who decides to give a child one very special prize: a day in Olympus. There are some hilarious moments, like the one in which a replica of Miraclewoman tries to seduce movie star Ronald Quartzenekker (Arnold Schwarzenegger). 

Christopher Schenck

“The Janitor”, written by Dick Foreman, penciled by Alan Smith and inked by Pete Williamson, is a very ironic tale about a janitor who doesn’t have a job anymore in Miracleman’s perfect new world. As a deference, however, he is hired to clean the almost infinite stairs of Olympus, and sometimes he even gains access to the higher level of the citadel of the gods. Foreman gives the protagonist a unique voice. It’s impossible not to laugh with this one. 

 

At the end, back in the library of Olympus, Gaiman shares with us the inner thoughts of Miracleman: “And if I have a question, then it is simply this: what do people want? What do humans want? What do they want?”. French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan suggested that our greatest source of frustration is not being able to answer the question, what does the other want from me? As the de facto ruler of planet Earth, Miracleman is haunted by that which has always been unanswerable.

Miracleman: Apocrypha # 1 - Gaiman, Buckingham, Robinson, Jones et al.

If we question the authenticity of a widely popular book, does that take merit from the work itself? The word apocrypha carries some negative connotations: false, spurious and even heretical. But when we talk about literature, can anything be defined as heretical? In any case, when Eclipse Comics editor Catherine Yronwode decided to publish Miracleman: Apocrypha, I’m quite certain that she knew exactly what she was in doing in choosing that specific word.

The first issue of this miniseries was released in November, 1991. Shortly after Miracleman # 22, the conclusion of Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham’s Golden Age arc. So this miniseries, in many ways, serves as an intermission between the end of the Golden Age and the beginning of the Silver Age, which in the end never happened. Curiously, when Marvel reprinted Alan Moore’s Miracleman, a promise was made. The Silver Age would finally see the light of day; however, that didn’t happen either. It’d be safe to assume that Marvel will never reprint the Apocrypha miniseries, since it could be even more controversial than Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman’s Miracleman series.

The opening story is “The Library of Olympus”, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Mark Buckingham. In his search for perfection, Miracleman has long stopped being a superhero and he has fully embraced his divine condition. From the heights of Olympus, he rules mankind, in a relaxed and condescending way that no one could consider as tyrannical. For Miracleman, people have become strange abstractions that he can barely understand, so in an attempt to learn about normal people, he decides to nurture himself with fiction. Instead of novels or short stories, he chooses that unique form of art that we’ve come to know as comic books: “Idly, as if I do not care, I take three of them from the racks. From each garish cover a crude drawing of my face stares up at me”.

“Miracleman and the Magic Pen” is the first comic book read by Miracleman, and it’s the kind of classic story that could have come from the Mick Anglo era. Steve Moore, the writer, combines the sensibilities of yesteryear with the philosophical nature of Miracleman; indeed, the limits between reality and fiction can be easily broken. Stan Woch, who had collaborated with Alan Moore in Swamp Thing, does a magnificent job penciling and inking this story.

James Robinson writes a very violent story that would be virtually impossible to publish nowadays. “The Rascal Prince” revolves around Johnny Bates, who in Alan Moore’s run was Miracleman’s nemesis. Kelley Jones, an artist often associated with horror and darkness, magnificently captures the sinister side of Johnny Bates, who once had been Miracleman’s sidekick. Johnny has all the power he needs to conquer the world, but he uses that power to rape an innocent girl. This is the beginning of the transformation for Johnny Bates, who would end up becoming the most cruel and depraved man, and certainly the only one powerful enough to defeat Miracleman.

Sara Byam writes “The Scrapbook”, with pencils and inks by the legendary Norm Breyfogle. The story takes place in an alternative timeline, in which Miracleman decided to stay with Liz. Together, they embark upon a road trip through the US. The main conflict here is the idea of a superhuman being such as Miracleman trying to adapt to an ordinary life, but no matter how much tries, his romantic relationship with Liz is still doomed. Finally, Matt Wagner’s “Limbo” is a peculiar conversation between Miracleman and the immortal Mort. In this remarkable first issue, we get to see astonishing work from some of the best writers and artists of the time.

3,000,000 Visits and New Comics!

2020 has been a year that will not be easily forgotten. At the beginning of March I was happily sharing with you the good news of reaching 1,000 posts and only a week later, my good friend and fantasy writer Mario Buenaventura (author of El guardián) was telling me that our lives was about to change completely. Due to his unexpected and random connection with high ranking military personnel, he found out that it had been rumored that there would be a complete lockdown in San Francisco and probably the rest of the Bay Area. 

Up to that point, despite the numerous alarms and threatening news, our lives in the small town of Davis, California, were absolutely normal but that was about to change drastically. It was Mario’s warning that allowed to come up with a plan and relocate temporarily to West Sacramento. 2 days after I arrived to West Sacramento, the lockdown in the Central Valley was officially announced. I’ll always be thankful to Mario for letting me know almost a week in advance what would happen even if, and that’s completely my fault, going to West Sacramento wasn’t the best decision in the end. 

As much as I have hated quarantine, I must say that I have probably read more this year than in previous ones. And comic books can certainly make for an excellent form of escapism especially in times like this, in which reality is uglier than usual. Even with the coronavirus vaccine, it will take months for things to get back to normal, but at least we will always have dozens or hundreds of comics to read. 

In any case, now we have surpassed 3 million visits which is quite a bit, even though it took a decade to get to that point. So in a way this is a post to commemorate those 3 million visits but also to announce that in addition to Dead Wrong (2019) my new comic book, Dawn of the Undead # 2 (2020), will soon be available on Comixology. So stay tuned for updates! The best is yet to come!

A principios de marzo estaba felizmente compartiendo con ustedes la buena noticia de llegar a los 1,000 posts y apenas una semana después, mi buen amigo y escritor de fantasía Mario Buenaventura (autor de El guardián) me decía que nuestras vidas estaban a punto de cambiar por completo. Debido a su conexión inesperada y aleatoria con personal militar de alto rango, se enteró de que se rumoreaba que habría una cuarentena total en San Francisco y probablemente en el resto del Bay Area.

Hasta ese momento, a pesar de las numerosas alarmas y noticias amenazadoras, nuestras vidas en la pequeña ciudad de Davis, California, era absolutamente normales pero eso estaba a punto de cambiar drásticamente. Fue la advertencia de Mario lo que permitió idear un plan y trasladarme temporalmente a West Sacramento. Dos días después de mi llegada a West Sacramento, se anunció oficialmente la cuarentena en el Central Valley. Siempre estaré agradecido con Mario por hacerme saber casi con una semana de anticipación lo que sucedería incluso si, y eso es completamente mi culpa, ir a West Sacramento no fue la mejor decisión al final.

Por mucho que haya odiado la cuarentena, debo decir que probablemente he leído más este año que en los anteriores. Y los cómics ciertamente pueden ser una excelente forma de escapismo, especialmente en momentos como este, en los que la realidad es más desagradable de lo habitual. Incluso con la vacuna para el coronavirus, las cosas tardarán meses en volver a la normalidad, pero al menos siempre tendremos decenas o cientos de cómics para leer.

En cualquier caso, ahora hemos superado los 3 millones de visitas que nos es poca monta, aunque hemos tardado una década en llegar a ese punto. November Comics / Cómics de noviembre

After spending Thanksgiving in Morgan Hill, not too far from San Jose, I read last month’s comics. The Boys and Legion of Super-Heroes were very good, and the FCBD books were quite entertaining, especially Richard Fairgray’s Monster Showcase. Girl by Milligan and Fegredo is an amazing comic that I must review one day, I would choose it as the best I’ve read this year, but since it’s a reprint (from the 90s) it wouldn’t count as the best of 2020. In any case, my favorite comic of the month was Avengers: Marvels Snapshots #1, Barbara Randall Kesel writes a really touching story. And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

AVENGERS: MARVELS SNAPSHOT #1

Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling # 1 - Chip Zdarsky, Anthony Oliveira & Manuel García

In 2005 Allan Heinberg forever changed the Marvel Universe with the introduction of two amazing characters: Wiccan and Hulkling. Although portraying two gay teenage superheroes as a loving couple was quite controversial amidst the most conservative sector of Marvel readers, Heinberg never gave up and turned Young Avengers not only into one of the most successful titles but also one of the most revered and admired by fans.

We all knew that Billy Kaplan (Wiccan) and Teddy Altman (Hulkling) were lovers, but due to the extremely prudish mindset of some readers, we never got to see the two of them kissing on the page in the original series. We had to wait 7 years until Heinberg wrote the miniseries Avengers: the Children’s Crusade. In 2012, Billy and Teddy kissed each other for the first time. 

The young heroes kissed again on multiple occasions on Kieron Gillen’s Young Avengers in 2013, proving that what was once considered controversial was no longer such a big taboo. However, for a gay couple their sex life was, shall we say, enshrouded in secrecy. Were they doing the dirty or not? I’m sure many fans were asking that question, and judging by the plethora of erotic fanfic art available online, many of them had found a way to answer that!

Teddy Altman (Hulkling)

In “Profane the Precious Time” (originally published in Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling # 1, September 2020), Chip Zdarsky and Anthony Oliveira write a fascinating story that revolves around Hulkling, his role as future emperor and most especially his relationship with Wiccan. Manuel Garcia does an amazing job as a penciler, providing sequences full of action but also more calmed moments, in which the characters can be seen as vulnerable and human as ever. Cam Smith is the inker and Triona Farrell the colorist, while the striking cover of this issue is by Patrick Gleason. 

The extraordinary splash page in which we see Teddy Altman laying in bed, has a unique level of realism and grace that only Garcia could’ve accomplished. There is also a strong romantic tone in the page in which Teddy and Billy are cuddling together, overlooking the city. Of course, the moment all fans were waiting for, the moment that had inspired thousands of fanfic art, is magnificently illustrated by Garcia. Marvel’s most prominent gay couple end up making love on an alien spaceship.

However, this is more than a simple sexual encounter. Zdarsky and Oliveira create a compelling story in which love between two young men is no longer a taboo, but that doesn’t make things any easier. Wiccan belongs to our world, while Hulkling has to embrace his position as the new emperor of an alien civilization. This one shot feels just as special as Young Avengers did, and only this amazing creative team would have been able to pull that off.

October Comics / cómics de octubre

In October I went to Salt Lake City for the second time this year, so I didn’t have time to read my comics and oh boy, I sure got more this month than in previous ones! Marvel # 1 was a great first issue, even better than Marvels Snapshots Spider-Man. Strange Adventures continues to surprise just as The Boys Dear Beckie does. Norse Mythology seems to be promising, and Scumbag #1 was funny and raunchy, just up my alley. Legion of Super-Heroes is quite good. My favorite issue of the month was Marvels X #6. And now without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

BATMAN WHITE KNIGHT BATMAN DAY #1 Special Ed (Net)

Just in time for Batman Day 2018 on September 15, DC reprints the sold-out first issue of the acclaimed miniseries written and illustrated by Sean Murphy!
