There are still many titles on standby but at least seems like things are going back to normal. My favorite issue of the month was Strange Adventures #2. A strong contender would have been The Boys Dear Beckie #2 and Strange Adventures #3. The Dollhouse and Marvels X continue to surprise me. And Captain America: Marvels Snapshots was pretty good. And now without further ado here are July comics as per solicitations:

BOYS DEAR BECKY #2

In July I celebrated my birthday and I also had the chance to indulge in the best the 7th art hast to offer: Lorcan Finnegan’s Vivarium (2019) is not only one of the best films from last year but also one that excels at unnerving, disturbing and terrifying its viewers. Everything begins when a young couple, Jesse Eisenberg (Café Society) and Imogen Poots (A Long Way Down), decide to get a new house in the suburbs. What at first seems a harmless search for the ideal home soon turns into a surreal nightmare that is more powerful than anything else. Literally trapped in a house they do not wish to live in, incarcerated in a suburb they have no way of escaping from and soon to be taxed with responsibilities none of them asked for, the relationship between them soon starts to fall apart. Although there are ominous elements from the very beginning of the film, after a few minutes we’re immersed in a tense and claustrophobic situation that will put us at the edge of our seats. Finnegan’s proposal is a powerful and intense metaphor that certainly alludes to the comforts of the upper middle class, but it goes well beyond that, by inserting elements that in a conventional narrative would be a source of joy, for instance, a baby that needs to be raised by his parents, but that here are the opposite. The presence of a child in their lives damages the relationship even more. Soon, the protagonists stop having sex, and there is a physical and mental separation between them that prevents them from escaping from this psychological hell. There are some scenes with the boy (Senan Jennings) that are pure and undistilled horror. In a time in which we all have been under quarantine, watching Vivarium might be especially shocking, but under any circumstance, this is phenomenal production that takes the best from two genres, horror and science fiction, and aptly combines them into a fascinating story of the most refined torture, full of unexpected twists. The ending is harsh and tragic. But then again, sometimes that’s how things end in life anyway.

Written and directed by Martín Deus, Mi mejor amigo (2018) is one of the best productions from Argentina I’ve seen in recent years. Angelo Mutti Spinetta is a teenager who enjoys reading novels, spending time in his bedroom and masturbating whenever he gets the chance; however, when his parents announce that Lautaro Rodríguez, the son of a friend, will stay with them for a few weeks, everything changes. The two boys quickly become friends, despite their many differences. Deus had already directed a magnificent short film about a boy falling in love with his best friend, Amor crudo, and in many ways Mi mejor amigo is a more complex take on that premise. There is much subtlety in Deus’ approach to the relationship between the two boys, at first, it seems they’re just friends, but when the protagonist kisses the other boy, it’s clear there is more going on between them than simply friendship, and yet, they never get a chance to take the next step, they’re never a couple, they don’t have sex, but they enjoy a deep and meaningful connection. With a sober style, Deus conveys all the hardships, doubts and insecurities of adolescence. One of the best scenes takes place when the protagonist talks to his mom, she has already realized that he is gay and has feelings for the other boy, but he can’t admit that, not even to himself, and that denial is what ultimately dooms what could’ve been his first loving relationship.

The Lobster (2015), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is a metaphorical and very peculiar analysis of the concept of love and the necessity of finding a soulmate. Colin Farrell (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) goes to a hotel for single people, in a matter of days, he must meet his soulmate or else he will be transformed into an animal. In the hotel, there are rules for everything, for instance, masturbation is forbidden and there are severe punishments, something John C. Reilly (Hard Eight) experiences as the hotel staff burn his hand. The way the protagonist tries to establish a relationship with other women is like a nightmarish journey through the real horrors of human interaction. Lanthimos  excels at portraying the viciousness, the coldness and the inhumanity of most of the characters, but at the same time admits a possibility for redemption, which can be found in the character of Rachel Weisz. This extraordinary film alternates between moments of cruelty and absurdity, and yet it remains as an intense narrative that forces us to think about that which we take for granted. The all-star cast includes Léa Seydoux (L’enfant d’en haut) and Ben Whishaw (Perfume). 

Michael James Johnson directs All the Wilderness (2014), a very interesting independent production about a shy teenager Kodi Smit-McPhee (Young Ones), who is ostracized by his peers due to his obsession with death; Danny DeVito is his therapist and Isabelle Fuhrman is the girl he falls in love with. The movie offers a peculiar insight into the life of a boy who constantly tries to predict when the people around him will die, but of course, once love enters into his life, his priorities will change. The evolution of the protagonist is noteworthy, and nothing seems exaggerated about it. There is one scene that I really love, when the teenager finally has the courage to talk about the suicide of his father, an event that has left an indelible mark in his life.

En julio fue mi cumpleaños y también tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar con lo mejor que el séptimo arte puede ofrecer: Vivarium (2019), de Lorcan Finnegan, no sólo es una de las mejores películas del año pasado, sino también una que destaca por desconcertar, perturbar y aterrorizar a sus espectadores. Todo comienza cuando una joven pareja, Jesse Eisenberg (Café Society) e Imogen Poots (A Long Way Down), deciden comprar una nueva casa en los suburbios. Lo que al principio parece una búsqueda inofensiva del hogar ideal pronto se convierte en una pesadilla surrealista que es más poderosa que cualquier otra cosa. Literalmente atrapados en una casa en la que no desean vivir, encarcelados en un suburbio del que no tienen forma de escapar, pronto serán encadenados a responsabilidades que ninguno de ellos pidió; así, la relación entre ambos pronto comienza a desmoronarse. Aunque hay elementos ominosos desde el comienzo de la película, después de apenas unos minutos estamos ya inmersos en una situación tensa y claustrofóbica que nos pondrá en vilo. La propuesta de Finnegan es una metáfora poderosa e intensa que ciertamente alude a las comodidades de la clase media alta, pero va mucho más allá de eso, al insertar elementos que en una narrativa convencional serían una fuente de alegría, por ejemplo, un bebé que necesita ser criado por sus padres, pero que aquí son lo contrario. La presencia de un niño en sus vidas daña aún más la relación. Pronto, los protagonistas dejan de tener relaciones sexuales, y existe una separación física y mental entre ellos que les impide escapar de este infierno psicológico. Hay algunas escenas con el niño (Senan Jennings) que son horror puro y sin destilar. En una época en la que todos hemos estado en cuarentena, ver Vivarium puede ser especialmente impactante, pero igual bajo cualquier circunstancia, esta es una producción fenomenal que toma lo mejor de dos géneros, el horror y la ciencia ficción, y los combina adecuadamente en una fascinante historia de la más refinada tortura, y llena de giros inesperados. El final es duro y trágico. Pero, de nuevo, a veces así es como las cosas terminan en la vida, de todos modos.

Escrita y dirigida por Martín Deus, Mi mejor amigo (2018) es una de las mejores producciones de Argentina que he visto en los últimos años. Deus ya había dirigido un magnífico cortometraje sobre un chiquillo que se enamora de su mejor amigo, Amor crudo, y en muchos sentidos Mi mejor amigo es una versión más compleja de esa premisa. Hay mucha sutileza en el enfoque de Deus sobre la relación entre los dos chicos, al principio, parece que sólo son amigos, pero cuando el protagonista besa al otro muchacho, está claro que hay más entre ellos que una simple amistad, y sin embargo, nunca tienen la oportunidad de dar el siguiente paso, nunca son una pareja, no tienen relaciones sexuales, pero disfrutan de una conexión profunda y significativa. Con un estilo sobrio, Deus transmite todas las dificultades, dudas e inseguridades de la adolescencia. Una de las mejores escenas tiene lugar cuando el protagonista habla con su madre, ella ya se ha dado cuenta de que él es gay y tiene sentimientos por el otro chico, pero él no puede admitir eso, ni siquiera a sí mismo, y esa negación es lo que finalmente condena lo que podría haber sido su primera relación amorosa.

Esta extraordinaria película alterna entre momentos de crueldad y de lo absurdo y, sin embargo, sigue siendo una narración intensa que nos obliga a pensar en lo que damos por sentado. El elenco de estrellas incluye a Léa Seydoux (L’enfant d’en haut) y Ben Whishaw (Perfume).

La evolución del protagonista es notable, y nada parece exagerado al respecto. Hay una escena que realmente me encanta, cuando el adolescente finalmente tiene el coraje de hablar sobre el suicidio de su padre, un evento que ha dejado una marca indeleble en su vida.

The Avengers # 4 - Kurt Busiek & George Pérez

At the beginning of “Once an Avenger…”, over 40 Avengers were summoned to fight against Morgan Le Fey, and at the conclusion of “Fata Morgana” 39 Avengers still remain. It’s the Beast who asks a question that no one knows how to answer, is it possible to have so many Avengers. Of course, the answer is no, and that is precisely the starting point of “Too Many Avengers!” (Avengers # 4, May 1998).

Just like the Justice League or other famous superhero teams, the Avengers are more efficient if there are only 7 members, certainly 39 would make things very complicated; this unprecedented situation makes it impossible for the team to coordinate. There is a very interesting scene at the beginning of the issue: we have a rather unimpressive a villain by the name of Whirlwind who is it stealing money from a bank; there are so many Avengers trying to capture Whirlwind that they are tripping over themselves and in the end they are not able to lay a finger on him. And what is also quite fascinating about this issue is the way all of the founding members of the Avengers reunite to discuss about who is going to be in the new team of Avengers. There are policies, rules and procedures that give the idea of an institutionalized superhero bureaucracy and yet the way Busiek handles the issue makes it look quite fascinating.

Half of the Avengers / la mitad de los Vengadores

Pérez, as usual, brings us an amazing opening page it's a very iconic splash page that shows a rather large team of Avengers all of them ready to attack the enemy, all of them jumping out of the page with energy, power and strength. It is exactly this type of page that made Pérez's famous when he was drawing Crisis on Infinite Earths and Wonder Woman, this is exactly the page that a comic book reader wants to see, a lot of famous characters displaying their superpowers as a preamble of an action-packed sequence. 

But not everything is about action, we also have very intimate moments between characters such as the one that takes place between the Vision and Scarlet Witch, there we can see her frustration and sadness; she is the woman responsible for saving the world and yet she is unhappy because there are many things in her life that are not the way they should be, and yes, this is a new beginning for The Avengers but they all have a past, they all have traumas, bad memories and failed relationships; this failure in relationships is precisely what makes Wanda Maximoff feel so bad.

Vision & Scarlet Witch

I think the key scene in this fourth issue takes place when Warbird (AKA Miss Marvel or Captain Marvel, real name Carol Danvers) is behind the bar at the Avengers mansion drinking a single malt Scotch which not only is delicious but it’s also proof of Jarvis’ excellent taste when it comes to liquor; after drinking she acts in a very unusual way, trying to hide the fact that she had been drinking and she comes up with an excuse in front of Iron Man. Having dealt with his own alcoholism in the saga “Demon in a Bottle”, Iron Man is well aware of the situation and understands what it means for people to come up with excuses and to deny that they have been drinking. And yet at the same time the way the scene is played it's so subtle that it could have been a misunderstanding; that is why during the meeting Tony Stark says that at the beginning he has reservations and he is not sure that Carol Danvers belongs to the team and suddenly he withdraws those reservations. He’s not sure and nobody can be sure because, in the end, in order to identify addiction it is the addicts themselves who must realize that there is a problem; in the meantime people around them might suspect that there is an addiction issue but that’s not a conclusive evidence unless, of course, the situation gets out of hand.

The final page is a magnificent and iconic illustration that shows the Earth's Mightiest Heroes united against a common threat, this is the day where the Avengers are born and we can see who is on the new team the leader of course is Captain America and he is accompanied by two other founding members, Thor the God of Thunder and Iron Man, then we also have classic Avengers such as the Vision, the Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye, and we have Warbird who had already been part of the team in the past, there are two completely new members who originally came from the New Warriors, Justice and  Firestar.

Al comienzo de “Una vez un vengador...”, más de 40 vengadores fueron convocados para luchar contra Morgan Le Fey, y en la conclusión de "Fata Morgana" 39 Avengers aún permanecen. Es Beast quien hace una pregunta que nadie sabe cómo responder, ¿es posible tener tantos Vengadores? Por supuesto, la respuesta es no, y ese es precisamente el punto de partida de "¡Demasiados Vengadores!" (Avengers # 4, mayo de 1998).

Al igual que la Liga de la Justicia u otros equipos famosos de superhéroes, los Vengadores son más eficientes si sólo hay 7 miembros, ciertamente 39 complicarían las cosas; esta situación sin precedentes imposibilita la coordinación del equipo. Hay una escena muy interesante al comienzo del número: tenemos un villano poco impresionante con el nombre de Whirlwind, que está robando dinero de un banco; hay tantos Vengadores que intentan capturar a Whirlwind que se tropiezan entre sí y al final no pueden ponerle un dedo encima. Y lo que también es bastante fascinante sobre este número es la forma en que todos los miembros fundadores de los Vengadores se reúnen para discutir sobre quién va a estar en el nuevo equipo de Vengadores. Existen políticas, reglas y procedimientos que dan la idea de una burocracia institucionalizada de superhéroes y, sin embargo, la forma en que Busiek maneja el tema hace que parecezca bastante fascinante.

Carol Danvers has a drinking problem  / Carol Danvers tiene un problema con la bebida

Pérez, como de costumbre, nos trae una página inicial increíble, es una página de presentación muy icónica que muestra un equipo bastante grande de Vengadores, todos listos para atacar al enemigo, todos saltando de la página con energía, poder y fuerza. Es exactamente este tipo de página la que hizo famoso a Pérez cuando dibujaba Crisis en Tierras Infinitas y Wonder Woman, esta es exactamente la página que un lector de cómics quiere ver, donde muchos personajes famosos muestran sus superpoderes como preámbulo de una secuencia llena de acción.

Pero no todo se trata de acción, también tenemos momentos muy íntimos entre personajes como el que tiene lugar entre Vision y Scarlet Witch, donde podemos ver su frustración y tristeza; ella es la mujer responsable de salvar el mundo y, sin embargo, no está contenta porque hay muchas cosas en su vida que no son como deberían ser, y sí, este es un nuevo comienzo para los Vengadores pero todos tienen un pasado, ellos todos tienen traumas, malos recuerdos y relaciones fallidas; este fracaso en las relaciones es precisamente lo que hace que Wanda Maximoff se sienta tan mal.

Hawkeye, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Captain America, Warbird, Iron Man, Justice, Firestar & Vision

Creo que la escena clave en este cuarto número tiene lugar cuando Warbird (también conocido como Miss Marvel o Capitán Marvel, nombre real Carol Danvers) está detrás de la barra en la mansión de los Vengadores bebiendo un whisky de pura malta que no sólo es delicioso, sino también uns prueba del excelente gusto de Jarvis cuando se trata de licor; después de beber, ella actúa de una manera muy inusual, tratando de ocultar el hecho de que había estado bebiendo y se le ocurre una excusa frente a Iron Man. Después de lidiar con su propio alcoholismo en la saga "Demon in a Bottle", Iron Man es muy consciente de la situación y entiende lo que significa para las personas encontrar excusas y negar que hayan estado bebiendo. Y sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, la forma en que se interpreta la escena es tan sutil que podría haber sido un malentendido y es por eso que durante la reunión Tony Stark dice que al principio tiene reservas y que no está seguro de que Carol Danvers pertenezca sl equipo y de repente retira esas reservas. No está seguro y nadie puede estar seguro porque, al final, para identificar la adicción, son los adictos mismos quienes deben darse cuenta de que hay un problema; mientras tanto, las personas a su alrededor pueden sospechar que existe un problema de adicción, pero eso no es una evidencia concluyente a menos que, por supuesto, la situación se salga de control.

La página final es una ilustración magnífica e icónica que muestra a los héroes más poderosos de la Tierra unidos contra una amenaza común, este es el día en que nacen los Vengadores y podemos ver quién está en el nuevo equipo, el líder, por supuesto, es el Capitán América y es acompañado por otros dos miembros fundadores, Thor el Dios del Trueno y Iron Man, luego también tenemos Avengers clásicos como Vision, Scarlet Witch y Hawkeye, y tenemos a Warbird que ya había sido parte del equipo en el pasado, allí hay dos miembros completamente nuevos que originalmente vinieron de los Nuevos Guerreros, Justice y Firestar.

As I’m sure you’ll remember, I wrote a review about the first issue of Flinch, a Vertigo horror anthology that I had been meaning to read for a long time. Fortunately, I was able to find the first issues for only a dollar each at the local comic book store in Davis, California. So the temptation was too great to resist and I bought them, even though I had already bought more than 60 back issues that very same day. But I’m glad I did, because the writers and artists that participate in the anthology are all extraordinary.

Richard Corben

This second issue came out in July 1999, and of course the most striking thing about it is the magnificent cover by Richard Corben, who had illustrated dozens of covers for Creepy and other comics intended for a mature audience. The skeleton covered in spiderwebs that has trapped a girl in a bones prison is a clever idea from Corben, but of course, one could expect no less from a man that had decades of experience in the genre. 

Bill Sienkiewicz

Just like the first issue, this one is also divided in 3 stories. The first one is “Maggie and her Microscope”, written by Dean Motter and penciled and inked by Bill Sienkiewicz. The story tells us how a scientist is doing research on a virus that might infect people, creating a dangerous epidemic, and then we have the scientist’s daughter, a girl that seems to be somewhat mentally unstable and that tries to release the virus. I think normally I would enjoy reading this kind of story, but keeping in mind that we’re going through the real life horror of the Coronavirus and the world’s deadliest pandemic ever, somehow this story seems trivial.  

Curiously, my favorite story here is “Found Object” and comes from authors that I wasn’t familiar with. In general I pride myself of being a comic book expert, but there will always be writers or artists that I’m not familiar with, and such is the case with writer Bob Fingerman and artist Pat McEown, who reminds me so much of Spanish creator Miguel Ángel Martín and his controversial works, such as Psychopathia Sexualis. “Found Object” has a similar tone, in terms of perversity and violence, which makes it even more similar to Miguel Ángel Martín’s comics. Great plot, great art and the ending is surprising and shocking.

When I read the first issue of “100 Bullets” years after it became extremely popular, I must admit I didn’t see what all the fuzz was about. Sure, maybe if I had read more issues I would’ve been more interested in the series, but for some reason Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso haven’t been as popular with me as they are with their thousands of fans. They’re the creative team in charge of “Food Chain”, and I’m absolutely convinced that fans of “100 Bullets” would love this story, but alas, I’m not. I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s simply not my cup of tea.

Como seguramente recordarán, escribí una reseña sobre el primer número de Flinch, una antología de terror de Vértigo que había querido leer durante mucho tiempo. Afortunadamente, pude encontrar los primeros números por apenas un dólar cada uno en la tienda local de cómics en Davis, California. Así que la tentación fue demasiado fuerte para resistir y los compré, a pesar de que ya había comprado más de 60 cómics ese mismo día. Pero me alegro de haberlo hecho, porque los escritores y artistas que participan en la antología son todos extraordinarios.

Pat McEown

Este segundo número salió en julio de 1999 y, por supuesto, lo más sorprendente es la magnífica portada de Richard Corben, quien había ilustrado docenas de portadas para Creepy y otros cómics destinados a un público maduro. El esqueleto cubierto de telarañas que ha atrapado a una chica en una prisión de huesos es una idea inteligente de Corben, pero por supuesto, uno no podría esperar menos de un hombre que tenía décadas de experiencia en el género.

Eduardo Risso

Al igual que el primer número, este también se divide en 3 historias. La primera es "Maggie y su microscopio", escrita por Dean Motter y con dibujos y tintas de Bill Sienkiewicz. La historia nos cuenta cómo un científico está investigando un virus que podría infectar a las personas, creando una epidemia peligrosa, y luego tenemos a la hija del científico, una niña que parece ser mentalmente inestable y que trata de esparser el virus. Creo que normalmente me gustaría leer este tipo de historia, pero teniendo en cuenta que estamos atravesando el horror de la vida real del Coronavirus y la pandemia más mortal del mundo, de alguna manera esta historia parece trivial.

Curiosamente, mi historia favorita aquí es "Objeto encontrado" y proviene de autores con los que no estaba familiarizado. En general, me enorgullezco de ser un experto en cómics, pero siempre habrá escritores o artistas con los que no estoy familiarizado, y tal es el caso del escritor Bob Fingerman y el artista Pat McEown, que me recuerda mucho al creador español Miguel Ángel Martín y sus obras controversiales, como Psychopathia Sexualis. "Objeto encontrado" tiene un tono similar, en términos de perversidad y violencia, lo que lo hace aún más similar a los cómics de Miguel Ángel Martín. Gran trama, gran arte y el final es sorprendente e impactante.

Cuando leí el primer número de "100 balas" años después de que se volviera extremadamente popular, debo admitir que no vi qué tenía de especial. Claro, tal vez si hubiera leído más números, me hubiera interesado más por este título, pero por alguna razón Brian Azzarello y Eduardo Risso no han sido tan populares conmigo como lo son con sus miles de fanáticos. Ellos son el equipo creativo a cargo de "Cadena alimenticia", y estoy absolutamente convencido de que a los fanáticos de "100 balas" les encantaría esta historia, pero, por desgracia, no soy un fan. No digo que sea mala, simplemente no es lo que busco en una antología de terror.

Very slowly, the comic book industry seems to be getting back to normal. In June I had the chance to read Adventureman, and I must say it was a great first issue. The Legion of Super-Heroes was as good as usual. But my favorite comic of the month was The Boys: Dear Becky, Garth Ennis has returned to one of his most popular creations, and the result is magnificent. Muy lentamente, la industria del cómic parece estar volviendo a la normalidad. En junio tuve la oportunidad de leer Adventureman, y debo decir que fue un gran primer número. La Legión de Superhéroes estuvo tan bien como siempre. Pero mi cómic favorito del mes fue The Boys: Dear Becky, Garth Ennis ha regresado a una de sus creaciones más populares, y el resultado es magnífico.
