The comic books I enjoyed the most this month came from DC Comics, the last time something like this happened was probably more than 10 years ago. My favorite comic book of the month was The Nice House on the Lake, a horror story that takes place in Wisconsin, and I’d say this one is almost a tie with the always magnificent Strange Adventures. Legends of the Dark Knight, The Marvels and Proctor Valley Road continue to be good.  The first issues of Jupiter’s Legacy Requiem was interesting, and the first issue of The Blue Flame (superheroes in Wisconsin) was quite promising. And of course I’m absolutely happy with the 3rd volume of Byrne’s Superman. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations.

BLUE FLAME #1

Los cómics que más disfruté este mes vinieron de DC Comics, la última vez que sucedió algo así fue probablemente hace más de 10 años. Mi cómic favorito del mes fue The Nice House on the Lake, una historia de terror que transcurre en Wisconsin, y diría que es casi un empate con las siempre magníficas Strange Adventures. Legends of the Dark Knight, The Marvels y Proctor Valley Road siguen siendo buenos. El primer número de Jupiter's Legacy Requiem fue interesante, y el primer número de The Blue Flame (superhéroes en Wisconsin) fue bastante prometedor. Y, por supuesto, estoy absolutamente feliz con el tercer volumen del  Superman de Byrne. Y ahora, sin más preámbulos, aquí están los cómics de junio.

BLUE FLAME #1

THE NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE #1

Algunos lo conocieron en la infancia; algunos lo conocieron hace meses. Y Walter siempre ha estado un poco... apagado. Pero después del año más difícil de sus vidas, nadie iba a rechazar la invitación de Walter a una casa asombrosamente hermosa en el bosque, con vista a un enorme lago selvático. Es hermosa, es opulenta, es privada, ¿así que una semana de aguantar los extraños planes y apodos de Walter a cambio de las vacaciones de su vida? ¿Por qué no? June films / películas de junio

In June I was busy with my trip to Peru so instead of watching movies I spent time with my family and ate delicious food in many restaurants. All in all, I still had time to see two new movies: Zack Snyder directs Army of the Dead (2021), a zombie movie that although isn’t nearly as good as Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead it is still entertaining enough. Las Vegas has turned into the land of the zombies and it’s about to be nuked, and that’s when the elite team of Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera and Matthias Schweighöfer is sent to recover millions in cash from the vault of a famous casino. I’ve always loved zombie movies, but this one has big plot holes (for instance, here a horse is faster than a helicopter), in addition to that, I can’t say I’m entirely convinced by Snyder’s new race of super zombies, which are extremely fast and smart enough to avoid traps, and the concept of the zombie king falling in love detracts from the whole living dead concept rather than enrichening a narrative that is unique precisely because of the mindless aspect of the zombie menace. At least we get to see the classic zombies alongside the new ones, so not all is lost. Also I think the ending was actually good. 

It's only been 3 years since I saw John Krasinski’s magnum opus, and now he’s back as director and writer of a very special sequel, A Quiet Place Part II (2020). Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprise their roles and this time we also have some new amazing actors like Cillian Murphy (Peacock). The sequel starts right at the end of the previous film, when a mother and her surviving two children must leave the ruins of what they once called home and thus must venture into the wild, fearing to be attacked by blind alien creatures that detect sound from miles away. Every aspect of the terrifying notion of a world that remains in silence is still in the sequel, and what is even more fascinating is that we get to see how the relationship between the surviving members of the family changes after they run into one last survivor. Something else that caught my attention was the framing sequence at the beginning, which serves as a prequel of sorts and allows to see John Krasinski  reprising his role in the very first day of the attack of the creatures. Unlike the first film, in which everything has already happened, and we only see the family going though a routine that looks like nothing we have ever seen in other horror productions, here we actually get to see normal life and how fast everything gets destroyed after the first attack. Something that I really enjoyed about this sequel is that it goes from the model of surviving in isolation, as was the premise in the first part, to finding other survivors and trying to reclaim a world that seems forever lost. Definitely one of the best films from 2020!

En junio estaba ocupado con mi viaje a Perú, así que en lugar de ver películas, pasé tiempo con mi familia y comí riquísimo en muchos restaurantes. De todos modos, igual tuve tiempo de ver dos películas nuevas: Zack Snyder dirige Army of the Dead (2021), una película de zombis que, aunque no es tan buena como Dawn of the Dead de Snyder, es lo suficientemente entretenida. Las Vegas se ha convertido en la tierra de los zombies y está a punto de ser bombardeada, y es entonces cuando el equipo de élite de Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera y Matthias Schweighöfer es enviado a recuperar millones en efectivo de la bóveda de un famoso casino. Siempre me han gustado las películas de zombies, pero esta tiene gigantescos huecos argumentales (por ejemplo, aquí un caballo es más rápido que un helicóptero), además de eso, no puedo decir que esté completamente convencido de la nueva raza de super-zombis de Snyder, que son lo suficientemente rápidos e inteligentes como para evitar trampas, y el concepto del rey zombi enamorándose resta valor a todo el concepto del muerto viviente en lugar de enriquecer una narrativa que es única precisamente por la ausencia de raciocinio en la amenaza zombi. Al menos podemos ver a los zombis clásicos junto con los nuevos, por lo que no todo está perdido. También creo que el final fue realmente bueno.

Sólo han pasado 3 años desde que vi la obra maestra de John Krasinski, y ahora él ha vuelto como director y escritor de una secuela muy especial, A Quiet Place Part II (2020). Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Millicent Simmonds y Noah Jupe repiten sus papeles y esta vez también tenemos algunos asombrosos actores nuevos como Cillian Murphy (Peacock). La secuela comienza justo al final de la película anterior, cuando una madre y sus dos hijos sobrevivientes deben dejar las ruinas de lo que una vez llamaron hogar y, por lo tanto, deben aventurarse en la naturaleza, con el temor a ser atacados por criaturas alienígenas ciegas que detectan el sonido a kilómetros de distancia. Cada aspecto de la aterradora noción de un mundo que permanece en silencio todavía está en la secuela, y lo que es aún más fascinante es que podemos ver cómo cambia la relación entre los miembros sobrevivientes de la familia después de que se encuentran con un último sobreviviente. Otra cosa que me llamó la atención fue la secuencia de encuadre al principio, que sirve como una especie de precuela y permite ver a John Krasinski retomando su papel en el primer día del ataque de las criaturas. A diferencia de la primera película, en la que ya todo ha sucedido, y sólo vemos a la familia siguiendo una rutina que no se parece a nada que hayamos visto en otras producciones de terror, aquí podemos ver la vida normal y lo rápido que todo se destruye a raíz del primer ataque. Algo que realmente disfruté de esta secuela es que pasa del modelo de supervivencia en aislamiento, como era la premisa en la primera parte, a encontrar otros supervivientes e intentar recuperar un mundo que parece perdido para siempre. ¡Definitivamente una de las mejores películas del 2020!

Common Grounds # 2 - Troy Hickman, Ethan Van Sciver and Jurgens

When I started this blog I realized the greatest satisfaction of doing this was communicating directly with authors such us Neil Gaiman or from the creative team of Image series that were new at the time. In March, when I reviewed the first issue of the remarkable miniseries Common Grounds, the biggest surprise, almost as if it were the unexpected twist in one of his own stories, was the comment by writer Troy Hickman himself, who visited this blog and read that post. 

Rodolfo Migliari

With the exception of Kurt Busiek and his groundbreaking Astro City, I’ve never seen another writer combining so masterfully the daily life aspects of superheroes and the distinctive characteristic of the city in which they live. “Roles” (March 2004), revolves around Jenny, a waitress in Common Grounds that has just finished her shift. Like many waitresses, she dreams of becoming an actress someday. Turns out her survival will depend precisely on that talent. 

When Jenny decides to give a lift to a hitchhiker, she soon realizes the man sitting next to her is a rapist and a serial killer. Up until that point the reader cannot know for sure if she has or doesn’t have superpowers, but thanks to her impressive acting skills, and thanks to Hickman’s scintillating dialogue and the absolutely beautiful art by Ethan Van Sciver, we believe in every word she says, and so does the man. For me the best part is the end of the story. It’s 100% inspiring. 

Ethan Van Sciver

Van Sciver has always been one of my favorite artists and I’m just surprised to realize that I had never talked about him before. The level of care and thoroughness is evident in every line, in every crosshatching effect. I think he combines the best elements of highly detailed artwork, the kind of which we could see from George Pérez, Phil Jimenez or Brian Bolland, with a fantastic expressiveness and a very dynamic approach that transforms every one of his pages into something absolutely fascinating and delightful. Here Jon Holdredge is the inker and Brian Buccellato the colorist, together they form an amazing artistic team. 

In “Elsewhere”, Analog Kid, a young superhero goes to Common Grounds looking for his adoptive father, Digital Man, who was seen there for the last time, after a fight with a supervillain. While Analog Kid asks the waitress for information, there is a very personal and quite touching conversation between him and her. Simultaneously, Digital Man’s diary tells the story of his disappearance in a very surprising way. 

Ethan Van Sciver

The penciler of this story is Dan Jurgens, the inker is Al Vey and the colorist Guy Major. As usual, the extraordinary cover is by Rodolfo Migliari, “the pride of Argentina”. As a bonus, Hickman includes the process of the cover, and we also get to see a preliminary version which is also spectacular.

Cuando comencé este blog me di cuenta de que la mayor satisfacción de hacer esto era comunicarme directamente con autores como Neil Gaiman o el equipo creativo de alguna nueva serie de Image de ese momento. En marzo, cuando reseñé el primer número de la notable miniserie Common Grounds, la mayor sorpresa, casi como si se tratase del giro inesperado de una de sus propias historias, fue el comentario del mismísimo escritor Troy Hickman, que visitó este blog y leyó ese post.

Con la excepción de Kurt Busiek y su revolucionaria Astro City, nunca había visto a otro escritor combinar tan magistralmente los aspectos de la vida cotidiana de los superhéroes y la característica distintiva de la ciudad en la que viven. “Roles” (marzo de 2004), gira en torno a Jenny, una mesera de Common Grounds que acaba de terminar su turno. Como muchas camareras, sueña con convertirse en actriz algún día. Resulta que su supervivencia dependerá precisamente de ese talento.

Dan Jurgens

Cuando Jenny decide llevar a un autoestopista, pronto se da cuenta de que el hombre sentado a su lado es un violador y un asesino en serie. Hasta ese momento, el lector no puede saber con certeza si ella tiene o no superpoderes, pero gracias a sus impresionantes habilidades de actuación, y gracias al brillante diálogo de Hickman y el arte absolutamente hermoso de Ethan Van Sciver, creemos en cada palabra que ella dice, y el hombre también. Para mí, la mejor parte es el final de la historia. Es 100% inspiradora.

Van Sciver siempre ha sido uno de mis artistas favoritos y me sorprende darme cuenta de que nunca antes había hablado de él. El nivel de cuidado y minuciosidad es evidente en cada línea, en cada efecto del entramado. Creo que combina los mejores elementos de una obra de arte muy detallada, de esas que pudimos ver en George Pérez, Phil Jimenez o Brian Bolland, con una expresividad fantástica y un enfoque muy dinámico que transforma cada una de sus páginas en algo absolutamente fascinante y encantador. Aquí Jon Holdredge es el entintador y Brian Buccellato el colorista, juntos forman un equipo artístico increíble.

En "Otro lugar", Analog Kid, un joven superhéroe va a Common Grounds en busca de su padre adoptivo, Digital Man, que fue visto allí por última vez, después de una pelea con un supervillano. Mientras Analog Kid le pide información a la mesera, hay una conversación muy personal y bastante conmovedora entre él y ella. Al mismo tiempo, el diario de Digital Man cuenta la historia de su desaparición de una manera muy sorprendente.

El dibujante de esta historia es Dan Jurgens, el entintador es Al Vey y el colorista Guy Major. Como es habitual, la extraordinaria portada es de Rodolfo Migliari, “el orgullo de Argentina”. Como bono adicional, Hickman incluye el proceso de la portada, y también podemos ver una versión preliminar que también es espectacular.

May comic books / Cómics de mayo

In May I got some really promising first issues, such as The Marvels # 1 and Legends of the Dark Knight # 1. Proctor Valley Road and Space Bastards continue to be enjoyable. But my favorite single issue of the month is Fantastic Four: Life Story #1. This was also a special month because of Barry Windsor-Smith’s first original graphic novel in decades, I haven’t finished reading it yet but I’m sure I’ll be talking a lot about it once I’m done. FANTASTIC FOUR LIFE STORY #1

MONSTERS

There are passages of heartbreaking tenderness, of excruciating pain, and devastating violence. It is surely one of the most intense graphic novels ever drawn.

PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD #3

En mayo recibí algunos primeros números realmente prometedores, como The Marvels # 1 y Legends of the Dark Knight # 1. Proctor Valley Road y Space Bastards continúan siendo divertidos. Pero mi número suelto favorito del mes es Fantastic Four: Life Story # 1. Este también fue un mes especial gracias a la primera novela gráfica original de Barry Windsor-Smith en décadas, aún no he terminado de leerla, pero estoy seguro de que hablaré mucho sobre ella una vez que haya terminado. FANTASTIC FOUR LIFE STORY #1

THE MARVELS #1

Superman # 2 - John Byrne

John Byrne was ahead of his time. Let’s think about 2004, when Brad Meltzer wrote Identity Crisis, a fascinating miniseries that showed us how dangerous it was for a superhero to have their secret identity revealed. Superheroes can be invulnerable to most threats thanks to their incredible superpowers, but the people close to them, their loved ones, are still fragile humans. Decades before Meltzer conceived this saga, John Byrne explored how horrific the consequences could be in a magnificent story titled “The Secret Revealed!” (originally published in Superman # 2, January 1987).

As we saw in Byrne’s Man of Steel, in the post Crisis continuity Lex Luthor was no longer a crazy scientist trying to rob banks, in fact, he had more money than all banks combined. As the second or third richest man in the world, Luthor’s ambition was to prove he was the most powerful man in Metropolis, and he certainly was, until the arrival of Superman. The fact that he’s a billionaire, CEO of Lexcorp and virtually owner of pretty much every business and industry in Metropolis makes him way more dangerous than ever before. 

Lana Lang

Intrigued by Clark Kent’s sudden rise as the Daily Planet’s top reporter (and responsible for the first historical interview with Superman), Luthor uses his considerable resources to find the connections between the journalist from Smallville and the Man of Steel. And in a splash page magnificently illustrated by Byrne we see a familiar face connected with many of Superman sightings: Lana Lang. Quickly, Luthor comes to the conclusion that to find out the secrets of Superman first he must find who this woman is.

The first time I had access to this story was in the Spanish Zinco edition, and because they used to part the stories in half, I only read the first 12 pages and then I was left with one hell of a cliffhanger, it wasn’t until years later that I managed to read the remaining the 10 pages. Byrne was such a talented writer that you could take any comic written by him, divided in 2 or 3 parts, and you could very easily find surprising cliffhangers. That ability of constantly creating interest and increasing the suspense page after page is not only the mark of a creative writer but also the evidence of how much we’ve lost in contemporary comic books. 

Doctor Happersen, Lex Luthor & Metallo

Luthor sends his henchmen to Smallville, where they kidnap Lana Lang and steal valuable items from Jonathan and Martha Kent, including a scrapbook which will have major repercussions in later issues. Under Luthor’s orders they torture Lana and ask what is her real connection with Superman. Despite all the fear and the pain Lana experiences, she still refuses to reveal Superman’s secrets. Upon her release, she goes to Clark Kent’s apartment building, leaving a trail of blood behind her. I remember how scary this moment was, when an unsuspecting Superman returns home and finds out that an old childhood friend had been hurt. 

Like I said in the beginning, Superman might be indestructible, invulnerable and even invincible, but the people around him are not. Byrne’s art is excellent, especially when it comes to depicting the shocking moment when Clark Kent finds a wounded Lana Lang, and Byrne’s complete dominion over facial expressions creates moments of unique tenderness and connection between Clark and Lana, he feels in pain after seeing what’s happened to her even if she tries to put up a brave face (all the art in this issue is amazing, including the cover which a few years ago was considered outdated and now it has the charm of a vintage proposal); however, the tension continues to escalate, as Lana explains that the Kents might have fallen victim to a similar fate. 

When Superman tries to apprehend Luthor’s henchmen, they die in an explosion, and fortunately the Martha and Jonathan Kent are still safe and sound, but still Superman is so angry that he decides to have a direct confrontation with Luthor, who had recently attempted to kill Metallo (check Heart of Stone, Superman # 1) with the help doctor Happersen (a character that will become more relevant in future years) to retrieve the kryptonite that is so lethal to the Man of Steel. Superman knows that Luthor was behind all this attack, but he can’t prove it, and now that Luthor has a ring of kryptonite, the hero of Metropolis can’t even come close to the richest man in the city. 

Byrne showed me, all those years ago, what a menacing and scary Luthor could be as an enemy. “That was the beginning, then. The beginning of a fascination with comic books in general, and Superman in particular, that has persisted more or less consistently to the present day”, has expressed Byrne. And I must say that, for me, comics like this were also the beginning of an everlasting fascination.

Décadas antes de que Meltzer concibiera esta saga, John Byrne exploró cuán horribles podrían ser las consecuencias en una magnífica historia titulada "¡El secreto revelado!" (publicada originalmente en Superman # 2, enero de 1987).

Como vimos en Man of Steel de Byrne, en la continuidad post-crisis, Lex Luthor ya no era un científico loco que intentaba robar bancos, de hecho, tenía más dinero que todos los bancos juntos. Como el segundo o tercer hombre más rico del mundo, la ambición de Luthor era demostrar que era el hombre más poderoso de Metrópolis, y ciertamente lo era, hasta la llegada de Superman. El hecho de que sea multimillonario, director ejecutivo de Lexcorp y prácticamente propietario de casi todos los negocios e industrias de Metrópolis lo hace mucho más peligroso que nunca.

Lana Lang & Clark Kent

Intrigado por el repentino ascenso de Clark Kent como el principal reportero del Daily Planet (y responsable de la primera entrevista histórica con Superman), Luthor usa sus considerables recursos para encontrar las conexiones entre el periodista de Smallville y el Hombre de Acero. Y en una página de presentación magníficamente ilustrada por Byrne, vemos un rostro familiar relacionado con muchos de los avistamientos de Superman: Lana Lang. Rápidamente, Luthor llega a la conclusión de que para descubrir los secretos de Superman primero debe averiguar quién es esta mujer.

La primera vez que tuve acceso a esta historia fue en la edición en español de Zinco, y como solían dividir las historias por la mitad, solo leí las primeras 12 páginas y luego me quedé con ganas de saber cuál fue el desenlace. Hasta que años después logré leer las 10 páginas restantes. Byrne era un escritor tan talentoso que se podía tomar cualquier cómic escrito por él, dividirlo en 2 o 3 partes, y era muy fácil encontrar cliffhangers sorprendentes. Esa capacidad de generar interés constantemente y aumentar el suspenso página tras página no sólo es la marca de un escritor creativo, sino también la evidencia de cuánto hemos perdido en los cómics contemporáneos.

Luthor envía a sus secuaces a Smallville, donde secuestran a Lana Lang y roban objetos valiosos de Jonathan y Martha Kent, incluido un álbum de recortes que tendrá importantes repercusiones en números posteriores. Bajo las órdenes de Luthor, torturan a Lana y le preguntan cuál es su conexión real con Superman. A pesar de todo el miedo y el dolor que experimenta Lana, todavía se niega a revelar los secretos de Superman. Tras su liberación, va al edificio de apartamentos de Clark Kent, dejando un rastro de sangre detrás de ella. Recuerdo lo aterrador que fue este momento, cuando un desprevenido Superman regresa a casa y descubre que una vieja amiga de la infancia había sido herida.

Lex Luthor versus Superman

Como dije al principio, Superman puede ser indestructible, invulnerable e incluso invencible, pero las personas que lo rodean no lo son. El arte de Byrne es excelente, especialmente cuando se trata de representar el momento impactante cuando Clark Kent encuentra a una Lana Lang herida, y el dominio completo de Byrne sobre las expresiones faciales crea momentos de ternura y conexión únicas entre Clark y Lana, él siente dolor después de ver lo que le sucedió a ella aunque trate de poner cara de valiente (todo el arte de este número es asombroso, incluida la portada que hace unos años se consideraba anticuada y ahora tiene el encanto de una propuesta vintage); sin embargo, la tensión sigue aumentando, ya que Lana explica que los Kent podrían haber sido víctimas de un destino similar.

Cuando Superman intenta detener a los secuaces de Luthor, mueren en una explosión y, afortunadamente, Martha y Jonathan Kent estaban sanos y salvos, pero Superman está tan enojado que decide tener una confrontación directa con Luthor, quien recientemente había intentado matar a Metallo (revisad Corazón de piedra, Superman # 1) con la ayuda del doctor Happersen (un personaje que cobrará mayor relevancia en los próximos años) para recuperar la kriptonita que es tan letal para el Hombre de Acero. Superman sabe que Luthor estuvo detrás de todo este ataque, pero no puede probarlo, y ahora que Luthor tiene un anillo de kriptonita, el héroe de Metrópolis ni siquiera puede acercarse al hombre más rico de la ciudad.

Byrne me mostró, hace todos esos años, lo amenazante y aterrador que Luthor podía ser como enemigo. “Ese fue el comienzo, entonces. El comienzo de una fascinación por los cómics en general, y por Superman en particular, que ha persistido de manera más o menos consistente hasta nuestros días ”, ha expresado Byrne. Y debo decir que, para mí, los cómics como este también fueron el comienzo de una fascinación eterna.
