October Comics / cómics de octubre

After an impromptu trip to Las Vegas with my amazing group of European friends, I came back home ready to read October’s comics, and I sure found plenty of good stuff this month. I have to say I absolutely loved Miracleman: the Silver Age #1, Gaiman and Buckingham are an amazing creative team, by far the best I’ve read in a while, but since this was originally published in 1992 it can’t be my favorite of the month. Shaolin Cowboy continues to be an absolute graphic delight, Darrow is always impressive. The two DC miniseries I’m following are great, Batman Fortress and The Human Target (I should review them both). I’d say the best comic of the month was Lovesick by Luana Vecchio! Después de un improvisado viaje a Las Vegas con mi asombroso grupo de amigos europeos, regresé a casa lista para leer los cómics de octubre y vaya que encontré muchas cosas buenas este mes. Debo decir que me encantó Miracleman: la Edad de Plata #1, Gaiman y Buckingham son un equipo creativo increíble, de lejos, lo mejor que he leído en mucho tiempo, pero como esto se publicó originalmente en 1992, no puede ser mi favorito del mes. Shaolin Cowboy sigue siendo una delicia gráfica absoluta, Darrow siempre es impresionante. Las dos miniseries de DC que estoy siguiendo son estupendas, Batman Fortress y The Human Target (debería reseñarlas). ¡Diría que el mejor cómic del mes fue Lovesick de Luana Vecchio! October films / películas de octubre

Before celebrating Halloween, I have to say October was a pretty busy month, so I only had time to see two remarkable films, the first one is Elvis (2022), arguably Baz Luhrmann’s best work to date. In this fascinating biopic about the King of Rock’n’roll, Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood) magnificently plays Elvis Presley while Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) plays the singer’s abusive and manipulative manager. I had no idea that I would find Elvis’ life so captivating, but I did. From humble origins to a breakout hit as a young man, Elvis Presley must deal with censorship and a very conservative society, however, as a bridge between the black and white people, Elvis embodies in his music the best of both worlds, the exhilarating promise of the future and the formative years in which he was surrounded by African American musicians. Elvis long career coincides with some of the most pivotal moments in American history, and portrays the constant efforts of the musician to address relevant issues while being thwarted by his manager. However, nothing is more tragic that to see Elvis incredible talent withering away in Las Vegas, a prisoner of his manager’s greed. The last years of Elvis are sad to a level I could not have predicted, and certainly I wasn’t prepared for the final sequence of the movie, a beautiful homage to Elvis as a musician and a magnificent combination of Austin Butler’s acting with real footage of Elvis Presley, in those final minutes, there is so much emotion and energy, so much sadness and joy, it’s a moment that could never be forgotten by the audience, one that will surely bring out tears from you, from me and from everyone else. The cast of Elvis includes Olivia DeJonge, Kodi Smit-McPhee (All the Wilderness) and Xavier Samuel. Next month I’ll finish my list of the best films of 2022, and Elvis will be at the top of it.

Written, directed and starred by Woody Allen, Small Time Crooks (2000) is a delightful comedy that I could watch over and over again. In part, it pays homage to old movies like Larceny, Inc and Il Solti Ignoti, but at the same time, it weaves its unique and hilarious plot in a way only Woody Allen could conceive of. The protagonist is Ray, an inept criminal who has been in jail and is married to Frenchie, played by Tracey Ullman; out of desperation, he comes up with a plan to rob a bank by digging a tunnel from the store next to it. The plan itself is a complete disaster, but the store that begins merely as a front, as a way to hide all the digging, turns out to be a huge success thanks to Frenchie’s cookie recipes. Quickly, the couple and their friends turn the small store into a multimillion franchise, becoming tremendously rich in the process, and yet, money can’t buy happiness, as Ray and Frenchie drift apart. When Hugh Grant (Four Weddings and a Funeral), a sophisticated socialite arrives to the scene, Frenchie is seduced by him and by the promise of becoming a cultured patron of the arts. In this extraordinary comedy about unexpected events, falling outs and reconciliations, socioeconomic differences and absurd situations, Woody Allen proves once again to be a truly gifted director. Since the first time I saw it, I included Small Time Crooks in my list of the best 100 films of the century. I love it!

Antes de celebrar Halloween, debo decir que octubre fue un mes bastante ajetreado, así que sólo tuve tiempo de ver dos films notables, la primera es Elvis (2022), posiblemente el mejor trabajo de Baz Luhrmann hasta la fecha. En esta fascinante cinta biográfica sobre el Rey del Rock'n'roll, Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood) interpreta magníficamente a Elvis Presley, mientras que Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) interpreta a su agente abusivo y manipulador. No tenía idea de que encontraría la vida de Elvis tan cautivadora, pero así fue. September comics / cómics de setiembre

At last I had time to read my new comics, and I must say I’m very happy with September’s offerings. Batman Fortress and Superman Space Age continue to surprise me. I’m also enjoying Mind MGMT Bootleg. The one-shot of Batman Dear Detective has exquisite art by Lee Bermejo, and Shaolin Cowboy Cruel to be Kin also has absolutely extraordinary art by Geof Darrow (so full of wonderful details! I love it!). Normally, I would have chosen either The Human Target or The Nice House on the Lake as my favorite issues of the month, and as fantastic as they were, they couldn’t compete against Miracleman #0, a return to greatness by Gaiman and Buckingham and an impressive roster of creators. I’ve literally been waiting years for this Miracleman series and I couldn’t be happier about it. And now, without further ado, here are September comics, as per solicitations:

Por fin tuve tiempo de leer mis nuevos cómics y debo decir que estoy entusiasmado con los títulos de setiembre. Batman Fortress y Superman Space Age me siguen sorprendiendo. También estoy disfrutando de Mind MGMT Bootleg. El one-shot de Batman Dear Detective tiene un arte exquisito de Lee Bermejo, y Shaolin Cowboy Cruel to be Kin también tiene un arte absolutamente extraordinario de Geof Darrow (¡tan lleno de detalles maravillosos! ¡Me encanta!). Giant-Size X-Men: Tribute To Wein & Cockrum

 A year ago I reviewed Captain America Tribute, an interesting Marvel project that consisted in adapting the first stories of the Sentinel of Liberty, by asking the best contemporary artists to illustrate again the iconic pages of yesteryear. In a similar, Giant Size X-Men preserves the original dialogs by Len Wein with stunning new art, each page is “a glorious example of the creativity and talent of today’s comic book artists”. True, some people might miss the original Dave Cockrum pages, but hey, those have been reprinted on multiple occasions and can be easily found online and in print.  

Adi Granov

Giant-Size X-Men # 1 was published in July 1975, and not only resurrected the mutants franchise but also made it the most popular Marvel title. In the words of Chris Claremont “Len and Dave laid the foundation, in a debut issue that remains a marvel (so to speak) of power and storytelling clarity, introducing its characters and situations with an eloquence and economy that many titles today might do well to emulate”. It certainly was a fundamental issue for Marvel comics, and in November 2020, to commemorate the 45th anniversary of its publication, this special tribute was released. Alex Ross

Let’s start with the cover, by the always amazing Adi Granov, an artist that I admire for his realistic style and care for details. Granov produces a beautiful composition faithful to the original Gil Kane & Dave Cockrum cover, however, as much as I love Granov, I keep getting the feeling that Kane & Cockrum really did make the characters burst out of the page, with more energy and dynamism, while they look slightly static in Granov’s version. I will say, however, that the background with the founding member of the X-Men look better in Granov’s cover. 

Mark Brooks

The first page is wonderfully illustrated by Alex Ross, proving why he is an absolute mastery of anatomy and lighting, and one of the best representatives of the hyperrealism style. The splash page of chapter 2 is also a fantastic illustration by the talented Mark Brooks. I’ve always wanted to review more Brooks comics but for some reason I haven’t had the time to do so. At least here you can see this glorious page. My only complaint here would about the lettering, which kind of interferes with the art, in comparison, the lettering from 1975 is way more efficient. 

Although I usually like Rod Reis, his reinterpretation of Krakoa, the island that walks like a man, is perhaps a bit simplistic, forgetting the wonderful details that Cockrum added to the original page. While Ross and Brooks actually improve the Cockrum pages, Reis is easily defeated by the veteran artist. The next page I’m including here is by Mike del Mundo and Marco D'Alfonso, who do a magnificent job together. Finally, I must say I really enjoyed the page by Marco Checchetto. Hace un año reseñé el Captain America Tribute, un interesante proyecto de Marvel que consistía en adaptar las primeras historias del Centinela de la Libertad, pidiéndoles a los mejores artistas contemporáneos que ilustraran de nuevo las icónicas páginas de antaño. De manera similar, Giant Size X-Men conserva los diálogos originales de Len Wein con un arte nuevo e impresionante, cada página es “un glorioso ejemplo de la creatividad y el talento de los artistas de cómics de hoy”. Es cierto que algunas personas pueden extrañar las páginas originales de Dave Cockrum, pero bueno, se han reeditado en múltiples ocasiones y se pueden encontrar fácilmente impresas y en línea.

Giant-Size X-Men # 1 se publicó en julio de 1975 y no sólo resucitó la franquicia de los mutantes, sino que también la convirtió en el título más popular de Marvel. En palabras de Chris Claremont, “Len y Dave sentaron las bases, en un número de debut que sigue siendo una maravilla (por así decirlo) de poder y claridad narrativa, presentando a sus personajes y situaciones con una elocuencia y economía que muchos títulos de hoy en día podrían hacer bien en emular". Sin duda fue un número fundamental para los cómics de Marvel, y en noviembre de 2020, para conmemorar el 45 aniversario de su publicación, se editó este homenaje especial. Mike del Mundo

Empecemos por la portada del siempre genial Adi Granov, un artista al que admiro por su estilo realista y cuidadosos detalles. Granov produce una hermosa composición, fiel a la portada original de Kane y Cockrum, sin embargo, a pesar de lo mucho que me encanta Granov, sigo teniendo la sensación de que Kane & y Cockrum realmente lograron que los personajes saltaran de la página, con más energía y dinamismo, mientras que en la versión de Granov se ven un poco estáticos. Sin embargo, diré que el fondo con los miembros fundadores de los X-Men queda mejor en la portada de Granov.

La primera página está maravillosamente ilustrada por Alex Ross, demostrando por qué es un absoluto maestro de la anatomía y la iluminación, y uno de los mejores representantes del estilo hiperrealista. La página de inicio del capítulo 2 también es una fantástica ilustración del talentoso Mark Brooks. Siempre he querido reseñar más cómics de Brooks, pero por alguna razón no he tenido tiempo para hacerlo. Al menos aquí se puede ver esta gloriosa página. Mi única queja aquí sería sobre el rotulado, que interfiere con el arte, en comparación, los rotulados de 1975 son mucho más eficientes.

Marco Checchetto

Aunque me suele gustar Rod Reis, su reinterpretación de Krakoa, la isla que camina como un hombre, es quizás un poco simplista, olvidándose de los maravillosos detalles que añadió Cockrum a la página original. Mientras que Ross y Brooks mejoran las páginas de Cockrum, Reis es derrotado fácilmente por el artista veterano. La siguiente página que incluyo aquí es de Mike del Mundo y Marco D'Alfonso, quienes hacen un magnífico trabajo juntos. Finalmente, debo decir que disfruté mucho la página de Marco Checchetto. Si revisan mi reseña de Giant Size X-Men, podrán comparar las páginas antiguas con las nuevas.

20 years ago Mel Gibson (Signs) was one of the most famous and important figures in Hollywood not only as an actor but also as a director. The best example of his filmmaking talent can be seen in Braveheart (1995), a historic film that was tremendously successful with the public and the audience.  Mel Gibson is William Wallace, a Scottish man who is adopted by his uncle, Brian Cox, after his parents are killed by an English nobleman. A few years after that, he suffers the loss of his betrothed at the hands of English soldiers. In the late 13th century, Scotland was struggling under the dominance of England, and it’s in this context that one man decides to avenge the death of a loved one and soon this turns into a full-out Scottish rebellion. The protagonist works with longtime friends such as Brendan Gleeson and James Cosmo and finds allies even from Ireland and manages to conquer the heart of Princess Isabelle, played by Sophie Marceau, who’s quite unhappy in her marriage with Edward, Prince of Wales, played by Peter Hanly. Perhaps that’s the only aspect of the film that could be criticized, the depiction of the prince as a weak homosexual, a coward man with no redeeming qualities. Patrick McGoohan brilliantly plays King Edward I, the English monarch nicknamed Longshanks, who is a magnificent adversary and a good strategist. Wallace wins important battles and continues to inspire people, but when he tries to obtain the support of the Scottish noblemen he finds a group of people that cannot be united, not even by the rightful heir of the Scottish crown, Robert the Bruce played by Angus Macfadyen. Amazing music, memorable scenes, dramatic moments, intense battle sequences and fascinating characters with strong motivations turn this into a real classic and a fan-favorite that is as bit as thrilling now as it was almost 30 years ago.

 

Outlaw King (2018), directed by David Mackenzie, is the closest thing to a Braveheart sequel you can find. The film literally starts at the end of Braveheart. William Wallace has been captured and executed under orders of the king of England. This forces Robert the Bruce, Earl of Carrick, played by Chris Pine (All the Old Knives) to finally take action. Too long has he remained neutral and now he tries to rally the Scottish noblemen to fight for the independence of Scotland, as in the previous film, James Cosmo is also present, this time as Bruce’s father. King Edward I is played by Stephen Dillane and as his health deteriorates he must rely on the military efficacy of Edward, Prince of Wales, played by Billy Howle. Robert the Bruce has faithful allies such as the Lord of Douglas played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Dummy), but unfortunately he doesn’t have enough troops or resources to fight against England, and yet that is precisely what he must do. Robert the Bruce becomes the king of Scotland but he’s also a fugitive, hunted down by English soldiers. After the death of King Edward I the time has come for the definitive battle between Robert the Bruce and the Prince of Wales. The Scottish army, outnumbered 6 to 1, fight with strength and bravery in Loudoun Hill, and thanks to the protagonist’s clever strategy they defeat the English soldiers. This is a great historical film, full of memorable sequences, and essential to understand what happened after Wallace’s death.   

Written and directed by Loïc Dimitch, Apollon (2016) is an interesting French short film in which Victor Laupin, a young man who goes swimming frequently, is obsessed with size of the “package” of other guys. Through several failed attempts, he tries to increase the size of his bulge. The final scene, full of erotic and suggestive images, the young man gets naked and comes to terms with the dimensions of his penis.

The Shop Around the Corner (1940), directed by Ernst Lubitsch, was surprisingly entertaining. I had wanted to check this out ever since the first time I saw You’ve Got Mail, a remake based on this romantic comedy. Here Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart are constantly fighting at work, but what they ignore is that they’re secretly pen pals. While You’ve Got Mail was based on anonymous email correspondence, The Shop Around the Corner is based on actual letters, but the script works wonderfully and despite this being 80 years old, I must say it made me laugh and I quite enjoyed it.

Unos años después sufre la pérdida de su prometida a manos de soldados ingleses. A fines del siglo XIII, Escocia luchaba bajo el dominio de Inglaterra, y es en este contexto en el que un hombre decide vengar la muerte de un ser querido y pronto esto se convierte en una rebelión escocesa total. El protagonista trabaja con viejos amigos como Brendan Gleeson y James Cosmo y encuentra aliados incluso en Irlanda y logra conquistar el corazón de la princesa Isabelle, interpretada por Sophie Marceau, quien es bastante infeliz en su matrimonio con Edward, Príncipe de Gales, interpretado por Peter Hanly. Quizás ese es el único aspecto de la película que se puede criticar, la representación del príncipe como un homosexual débil, un hombre cobarde, sin cualidades redentoras. Patrick McGoohan interpreta de manera brillante al rey Edward I, el monarca inglés apodado Longshanks, que es un magnífico adversario y un buen estratega. Wallace gana batallas importantes y sigue inspirando a la gente, pero cuando intenta obtener el apoyo de los nobles escoceses se encuentra con un grupo de personas que no pueden ser unidas, ni siquiera por el legítimo heredero de la corona escocesa, Robert the Bruce interpretado por Angus Macfadyen. Música asombrosa, escenas memorables, momentos dramáticos, intensas secuencias de batalla y personajes fascinantes con fuertes motivaciones hacen de este un verdadero clásico y un favorito de los fans, sigue siendo tan emocionante ahora como lo fue hace casi 30 años.
