Eternals # 1 & 2 - Kieron Gillen & Esad Ribić

Gods are immortal, and so are the Eternals. Created in 1976 by legendary author Jack Kirby, the Eternals were yet another attempt by the king of comics to introduce godlike creatures to the world of men. He had already done so with the New Gods in DC a few years ago, but it seems like Kirby’s Eternals was every bit as ambitious as his previous project, if not more. However, as it tends to happen, this exciting Marvel title disappeared after a few issues and Kirby had to abandon the project. But Eternals, after all, are eternal; and in subsequent years many of the characters were reintroduced in other Marvel titles. 

Esad Ribic

Evidently, the sporadic and disjointed appearances of the Eternals didn’t really do justice to Kirby’s ideas, and I’d say the moment of glory didn’t arrive until 2006, when Neil Gaiman decided to reignite the spark of illusion and fantasy that had been dormant for too long, and finally the Eternals were reborn. Back in 2006, I was making an interesting transition, as I’ve explained in this blog before. Fed up with DC’s yet another Infinite Crisis I migrated to Marvel, and I got there just in time for Civil War and, of course, Gaiman’s Eternals, which I’ve been meaning to review for the past decade but haven’t had a chance to do so yet, bear with me. We also think we are eternals and that we’ll have an infinite amount of years to read and write all the things that need to be read and written. 

Esad Ribic

Neil Gaiman also wrote about gods and about his own Eternals, the Endless, in the pages of Sandman (another masterpiece I should review soon). There is a tender echo of Sandman in the pages of this new iteration of the Eternals. Kieron Gillen also wrote about gods in The Wicked and the Divine. And now, voila, Gillen ends up writing Eternals, following in the footsteps of giants like Kirby and Gaiman, but adding his own spin to it.  

Ikaris

Interestingly enough, and I mentioned that in a letter I sent to the creative team, this is the second time Gillen takes over a title that I cared deeply about. It happened with Young Avengers, when I thought absolutely no one would be able to replace Heinberg and Cheung and turns out Gillen and McKelvie did a phenomenal job, in some ways even better than the original creative team. The same happens here. I thought no one could compete against Gaiman, but Gillen is a worthy opponent and his Eternals are perhaps even more fascinating than the ones envisioned by the Sandman creator.

Celestial

In the first chapter of “Only Death is Eternal” (originally published in Eternals # 1, March 2021), Ikaris has resurrected along with other Eternals. That is the true nature of an Eternal, to always avoid death by constant resurrection at the hands, or rather circuits, of a complex Celestial machine that has existed before neanderthals took their first steps. However something is really wrong. Zuras, the leader of the Eternals, has been assassinated and the Celestial machine is malfunctioning. Zuras cannot be resurrected, but is it possible then for an Eternal to truly die? 

Sprite & Ikaris

In the second chapter (Eternals # 2, April 2021) the investigation begins. Thanos has killed Zuras, but how did Thanos enter into the Eternal’s realm? Clearly the answer is that he had help from within, that means Thanos was merely the executor, and that means one of the Eternals is a traitor. Gillen also shows us some of the most fascinating aspects of the life of an Eternal, such as Ikaris’ encounter with a prehistoric tribe, where he promises a boy that he will return to save him and his people, the boy becomes a man, grows old and dies, and his children and grandchildren carry on the tradition of waiting for Ikaris, until one day the Eternal fulfills his promise and returns to protect them from a monster. This poetic moment reminds me so much of some heartbreaking moments in Sandman about immortality versus mortality.

Iron Man

I love Gillen as a writer, but what really motivated me to buy Eternals was Esad Ribić, a remarkable artist who has won the Arion’s Archaic Awards on more than one occasion. I always say that Ribić is a true heir of masters like Frank Frazetta, and he does a magnificent job in the pages of Eternals, as well as with the covers. Ribić’s illustrations have a grandiosity and elegant component, which only nurtures the dramatic and majestic vibe one gets from it all. Truly beautiful.

I had been waiting for this title since it was announced. I had seen some of the previous and admired Ribić’s art, but even so I was still amazed by the gorgeous pages of the comic. In the first issue, just the cover alone is a great representation of immortality and the changes associated with humans, changes that never affect an Eternal like Ikaris, Furthermore, the initial sequence, in which Ikaris is resurrected and wakes up naked inside the Celestial machine, reunites peacefulness with an ominous feeling, in a delicate balance that very few artists could achieve. From there on, it keeps getting better and better.

Zuras

A promise is made / se ha hecho una promesa

En el primer capítulo de “Sólo la muerte es eterna” (publicado originalmente en Eternals # 1, marzo del 2021), Ikaris ha resucitado junto con otros Eternals. Esa es la verdadera naturaleza de un Eterno, evitar siempre la muerte mediante la constante resurrección a manos, o más bien ‘a circuitos’, de una compleja máquina Celestial que ha existido antes de que los neandertales dieran sus primeros pasos. Sin embargo, algo está realmente mal. Zuras, el líder de los Eternos, ha sido asesinado y la máquina Celestial no funciona correctamente. Zuras no puede resucitar, pero ¿es posible entonces que un Eterno muera de verdad?

Ikaris is true to his word / Ikaris es fiel a su palabra

En el segundo capítulo (Eternals # 2, abril del 2021) comienza la investigación. Thanos ha matado a Zuras, pero ¿cómo entró Thanos en el reino de los Eternos? Claramente, la respuesta es que tuvo ayuda desde adentro, eso significa que Thanos era simplemente el ejecutor, y eso significa que uno de los Eternos es un traidor. Gillen también nos muestra algunos de los aspectos más fascinantes de la vida de un Eterno, como el encuentro de Ikaris con una tribu prehistórica, cuando le promete a un niño que regresará para salvarlo a él y a su gente, el niño se hace hombre, se vuelve anciano y muere, y sus hijos y nietos continúan la tradición de esperar a Ikaris, hasta que un día el Eterno cumple su promesa y regresa para protegerlos de un monstruo. Este momento poético me recuerda mucho a algunos momentos desgarradores en Sandman sobre la inmortalidad versus la mortalidad.

Druig

Me encanta Gillen como escritor, pero lo que realmente me motivó a comprar Eternals fue Esad Ribić, un artista extraordinario que ha ganado los Arion’s Archaic Awards en más de una ocasión. Siempre digo que Ribić es un verdadero heredero de maestros como Frank Frazetta, y hace un trabajo magnífico tanto en las páginas de Eternals como en las portadas. Las ilustraciones de Ribić tienen un componente grandioso y elegante, que sólo nutre el ambiente dramático y majestuoso de su puesta en escena. Verdaderamente hermoso. 

Había estado esperando este título desde que fue anunciado. Había visto algunos avances y admiré el arte de Ribić, pero aun así, igual quedé sorprendido y asombrado por las hermosas páginas del cómic. En el primer número, la portada es una gran representación de la inmortalidad y los cambios asociados con los humanos, cambios que nunca afectan a un Eterno como Ikaris, además, la secuencia inicial, en la que Ikaris resucita y se despierta desnudo dentro de la máquina Celestial reúne la tranquilidad con un sentimiento ominoso, en un delicado equilibrio que muy pocos artistas podrían lograr. A partir de ahí, el arte sigue mejorando cada vez más.

August comics / cómics de agosto

In August I returned from Spain and soon after that I traveled to Milwaukee and Madison, so I didn’t have enough time to read that month’s comics, especially since I ended up getting more than usual. Anyway, as usual I enjoyed Eternals, The Marvels, Batman Reptilian, Proctor Valley Road and Blue Flame. I got a few first issues which were quite promising, such as Defenders, Echolands (amazing art by J H Williams III), Killer Queens and Nine Stones (both comics with LGBT characters). I really liked the Batman the World anthology, with creators from  different countries and continents. And this year my favorite Free Comic Book  Day was Ed Piskor’s Red Room, it’s the first time in years that 2000 AD didn’t get first place. I must say once again The Nice House on the Lake was extraordinary, but the best comic of the month was God of Tremors by Milligan and Kowalski. And now without further ado, here are August comics as per solicitations:

BATMAN REPTILIAN #3

De todos modos, como de costumbre disfruté con Eternals, The Marvels, Batman Reptilian, Proctor Valley Road y Blue Flame. Recibí algunos primeros números que fueron bastante prometedores, como Defenders, Echolands (asombroso arte de J H Williams III), Killer Queens y Nine Stones (ambos cómics con personajes LGBT). Me gustó mucho la antología Batman the World, con creadores de diferentes países y continentes. Y este año, mi Free Comic Book  Day favorito fue la Red Room de Ed Piskor, es la primera vez en años que 2000 AD no obtuvo el primer lugar. Debo decir una vez más que The Nice House on the Lake fue extraordinaria, pero el mejor cómic del mes fue God of Tremors de Milligan y Kowalski. September was a busy month for me, as I traveled to Wisconsin and as in-person classes started again. Fortunately I had time to see at least a couple of movies: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, starred by Simu Liu, who plays the Asian hero from Marvel comics. I must say, even as an avid comic book reader, I have never read a comic book in which Shang Chi shows up so it seemed to me strange to have a movie revolving around such an obscure character. In any case, this is an amusing big budget production, and there are a few absolutely hilarious scenes, namely the ones in which Sir Ben Kingsley talks about Planet of the Apes. 

Chris McKay’s The Tomorrow War (2021) is an entertaining sci-fi / action movie in which aliens invade the planet and are about to subdue the human race. The twist? All of this happens decades into the future, but thanks to time traveling technology, people from the present are recruited to participate in this war of tomorrow. When Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) is drafted into the war and sent to the future, his whole life changes, however, he’s surprised by the discovery that his own daughter, who was only 8 years old when he saw her for the last time, is now Yvonne Strahovski, the commander in chief of the last human forces. There are a few plot holes and inconsistencies in this movie, but overall it delivers some really good scenes, plus a few interesting time paradoxes. I think Pratt is convincing as a father, a teacher and later on a soldier. The cast includes J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), who has also some extraordinary scenes.

Septiembre fue un mes ajetreado para mí, ya que viajé a Wisconsin y las clases en persona comenzaron de nuevo. Afortunadamente tuve tiempo de ver al menos un par de películas: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), dirigida por Destin Daniel Cretton, protagonizada por Simu Liu, quien interpreta al héroe asiático de los cómics de Marvel. Debo decir que, incluso como un ávido lector de cómics, nunca he leído un cómic en el que aparezca Shang Chi, por lo que me pareció extraño tener una película que girara en torno a un personaje tan desconocido. En cualquier caso, esta es una producción amena de gran presupuesto, y hay algunas escenas absolutamente hilarantes, a saber, aquellas en las que Sir Ben Kingsley habla sobre El planeta de los simios.

The Tomorrow War (2021) de Chris McKay es una entretenida película de acción y ciencia ficción en la que los extraterrestres invaden el planeta y están a punto de someter a la raza humana. ¿Lo novedoso? Todo esto sucede décadas en el futuro, pero gracias a la tecnología del viaje temporal, se reclutan a personas del presente para que participen en esta guerra del mañana. Cuando Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) es reclutado para la guerra y enviado al futuro, toda su vida cambia, sin embargo, se sorprende al descubrir que su propia hija, que apenas tenía 8 años cuando la vio por última vez, ahora es Yvonne Strahovski, la comandante en jefe de las últimas fuerzas humanas. Common Grounds # 4 - Troy Hickman, George Pérez, Carlos Pacheco & Dan Jurgens

I was so amazed by Common Grounds that instead of writing one global review for the whole miniseries I decided to review each issue individually. And as I’ve previously mentioned, Troy Hickman explores territories that most comic book writers never even think about… and they should! One of the most fascinating aspects of Common Grounds is the masterful integration of a superhero narrative (with all the costumes, superpowers and special dynamics involved) with an honest and very human portrayal of people. Real people. At the end of the day, the men and women that inhabit the pages of this Top Cow / Image Comics title are as real as your neighbors.

Rodolfo Migliari

In “Time of Their Lives” (April 2004), we see how harsh reality can be. Reality for all of us, after all, is walking on the streets and running into homeless people. When Commander Power leaves the local Common Grounds, he decides to give a few coins to a homeless man that is wearing rather unusual clothes, in fact, that man is wearing the costume of Blackwatch. The two men recognize each other, but it isn’t an easy encounter, as one might expect from two unique individuals that see each other randomly later in life. In this situation, one of them has achieved a certain level of financial stability and moderate success, while the other has lost it all and now has to live on the streets. 

I cannot express how powerful this premise felt to me. Quite often homeless people are seen as inhuman creatures that don’t deserve anybody’s attention, but what if they were superhuman creatures? What if they had nothing to keep them warm at nights except the warmness of their memories, the remembrance of a colorful past full of adventures? One moment in particular was especially shocking for me: when we see the box in which Blackwatch keeps an old blanket and the newspaper clips with news about that colorful past full of adventures that now must seem like a distant dream. What happens then is a moment of truth between these two men, who were once adversaries and now that life has treated them so differently, now that they’re older and perhaps wiser, they have the time to talk to each other honestly. The outcome of this story will help you recover your faith in (super)humanity. The incredibly talented Carlos Pacheco gives life to a brilliant script, incorporating a fabulous richness in body language and facial expressions. Pacheco has always been one of the best Spanish artists and in the pages of this story it’s clear to see why he’s revered as such.

“Fat Chance” explores another area rarely seen in superhero comics (with the exception of the cases of Karma, from the New Mutants and Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, both in the 80s): the problem of obesity. Now I feel like there should be way more stories about obese superheroes given that American comic books tend to be about superheroes and that the US is the second country in the world with the largest amount of obese people (the US used to be number one in obesity but it was dethroned by Mexico). Once a month, there is a group meeting for overweight superheroes, or “density-challenged”, as they prefer to refer to themselves. Knockout is the new member of the group and she quickly starts to feel disappointed at the complacent nature of the meeting. As the superheroes tell their stories, one soon feels immersed in a tragicomedy, especially with the case of those who can use their powers to create infinite amounts of ice cream. The penciler here is Dan Jurgens who, once again, makes a wonderful artistic contribution, and the inks are by Al Vey.

Carlos Pacheco

All the stories in this fourth issue are fantastic, but my favorite has to be “Glory Days”, illustrated by legendary artist George Pérez, who is at the top of his game (he was drawing these pages probably at the same time he did JLA / Avengers, the best drawn intercompany crossover ever published). Pérez became famous for Crisis on Infinite Earths as well as his revamping of Wonder Woman, with unique compositions and an unprecedented attention to details, the graceful pages of the American artist are always a joy to behold. In this last story, we witness the 30th anniversary of the superhero group Liberty Balance. 

Dan Jurgens

30 years have passed, and the retired superhero Lift-Off is now an old man, waiting for Belle. Can love last for decades? It can. Because love is as much an idea as it is a feeling, and ideas might have a beginning but not an end. It’s fascinating to see how much all these superheroes have aged, compared to how they looked 30 years ago. Time forgives no one. And as the protagonist wanders in this party catered by Common Grounds, he wonders if he’ll get a chance to see Bella again. But even if he does, can the spark of love be reignited after a quarter of a century? The encounter of the old man and the old woman is one of the most beautiful moments in this miniseries, as they dance together it’s impossible not to feel the emotion of the characters and the magic of an encounter after waiting for so many years. Finally, I would also like to congratulate Rodolfo Migliari for his stunning and dramatic cover. Personally, I’d say this is my favorite cover and my favorite issue of the miniseries. Once again, I highly recommend Common Grounds.

Me sorprendió tanto Common Grounds que, en lugar de escribir una reseña global para toda la miniserie, decidí reseñar cada número individualmente. Y como mencioné anteriormente, Troy Hickman explora territorios en los que la mayoría de los escritores de cómics ni siquiera piensan... ¡y deberían hacerlo! Uno de los aspectos más fascinantes de Common Grounds es la magistral integración de una narrativa de superhéroes (con todos los trajes, superpoderes y dinámicas especiales involucradas) con una representación honesta y muy humana de la gente. Gente real. Al final del día, los hombres y mujeres que habitan las páginas de este título de Top Cow / Image Comics son tan reales como vuestros vecinos.

En “El momento de sus vidas” (abril del 2004), vemos cuán dura puede ser la realidad. La realidad para todos nosotros, después de todo, es caminar por las calles y encontrarnos con personas sin hogar. Cuando Commander Power sale del Common Grounds local, decide darle algunas monedas a un pordiosero que lleva ropa bastante inusual, de hecho, ese hombre lleva el traje de Blackwatch. Los dos hombres se reconocen, pero no es un encuentro fácil, como cabría esperar de dos individuos únicos que se ven al azar más adelante en la vida. En esta situación, uno de ellos ha logrado un cierto nivel de estabilidad financiera y un éxito moderado, mientras que el otro lo ha perdido todo y ahora tiene que vivir en la calle.

George Pérez

No puedo expresar lo poderosa que me pareció esta premisa. Muy a menudo, las personas sin hogar son vistas como criaturas inhumanas que no merecen la atención de nadie, pero ¿y si fueran criaturas sobrehumanas? ¿Y si no tuvieran nada para mantenerlos calientes por las noches, excepto la calidez de sus recuerdos, el recuerdo de un pasado colorido lleno de aventuras? Un momento en particular fue especialmente impactante para mí: cuando vemos la caja en la que Blackwatch guarda una manta vieja y los recortes de periódicos con noticias sobre ese pasado colorido lleno de aventuras que ahora debe parecer un sueño lejano. Lo que ocurre entonces es un momento de verdad entre estos dos hombres, que alguna vez fueron adversarios y ahora que la vida los ha tratado de manera tan diferente, ahora que son más viejos y quizás más sabios, tienen tiempo para hablar con sinceridad. El resultado de esta historia te ayudará a recuperar tu fe en la (súper)humanidad. El increíblemente talentoso Carlos Pacheco da vida a un guión brillante, incorporando una fabulosa riqueza en el lenguaje corporal y las expresiones faciales. Pacheco siempre ha sido uno de los mejores artistas españoles y en las páginas de esta historia se ve claramente por qué es venerado como tal.

“Oportunidad gorda” explora otra área raramente vista en los cómics de superhéroes (a excepción de los casos de Karma, de New Mutants y Amanda Waller en Suicide Squad, ambos en los 80s): el problema de la obesidad. Ahora siento que debería haber muchas más historias sobre superhéroes obesos dado que los cómics estadounidenses tienden a ser sobre superhéroes y que Estados Unidos es el segundo país del mundo con la mayor cantidad de personas obesas (Estados Unidos solía ser el número uno en obesidad pero fue destronado por México). Una vez al mes, hay una reunión grupal para superhéroes con sobrepeso, o "con problemas de densidad", como prefieren referirse a sí mismos. Knockout es la nueva integrante del grupo y rápidamente comienza a sentirse decepcionada por la naturaleza complaciente de la reunión. A medida que los superhéroes cuentan sus historias, uno pronto se siente inmerso en una tragicomedia, especialmente en el caso de aquellos que pueden usar sus poderes para crear cantidades infinitas de helado. El dibujante aquí es Dan Jurgens quien, una vez más, hace una maravillosa contribución artística, y las tintas son de Al Vey.

Todas las historias de este cuarto número son fantásticas, pero mi favorita tiene que ser “Días de gloria”, ilustrada por el legendario artista George Pérez, quien estaba en su mejor momento (estaba dibujando estas páginas probablemente al mismo tiempo que dibujaba JLA / Avengers, el crossover intercompañía mejor dibujado de la historia del cómic estadounidense). Pérez se hizo famoso por Crisis en Tierras Infinitas, así como por su renovación de Wonder Woman, con composiciones únicas y una atención a los detalles sin precedentes, las elegantes páginas del artista estadounidense son siempre un placer para la vista. En esta última historia, asistimos al 30 aniversario del grupo de superhéroes Liberty Balance.

George Pérez

Han pasado 30 años y el superhéroe retirado Lift-Off es ahora un anciano que espera a Belle. ¿Puede el amor durar décadas? Puede que sí. Porque el amor es tanto una idea como un sentimiento, y las ideas pueden tener un principio pero no un final. Es fascinante ver cuánto han envejecido todos estos superhéroes, en comparación con cómo se veían hacía 30 años. El tiempo no perdona a nadie. Y mientras el protagonista deambula por esta fiesta con comida de Common Grounds, se pregunta si tendrá la oportunidad de volver a ver a Bella. Pero incluso si lo hace, ¿se puede reavivar la chispa del amor después de un cuarto de siglo? El encuentro del anciano y la anciana es uno de los momentos más bellos de esta miniserie, cuando bailan juntos es imposible no sentir la emoción de los personajes y la magia de este encuentro después de tantos años de espera. Finalmente, también me gustaría felicitar a Rodolfo Migliari por su impresionante y dramática portada. Personalmente, diría que esta es mi portada favorita y mi número favorito de la miniserie. Una vez más, recomiendo enfáticamente Common Grounds.

Superman # 4 - John Byrne

 “Dedicated to the names on the Black Wall -- and those who remember them” are the closing lines of “Bloodsport!” (originally published in Superman # 4, April 1987). When I first read this comic book, translated into Spanish by Ediciones Zinco, I remember feeling quite intrigued by those lines. What was the black wall? And why did it matter so much? It seemed to me that it had to be an homage to the Vietnam war but turns out John Byrne was referring to the Tulsa race massacre in 1921.

Racial discrimination of white men against black people brought about the tragedy of 1921. More than 60 years later, Byrne suggests that discrimination still exists although it has taken new forms and it isn’t simply a physical confrontation but something deeply engrained in society’s structure. In this issue, Superman will fight against Bloodsport, perhaps the first African American villain that had ever appeared in the pages of the Man of Steel. Except that he isn’t necessarily a super villain but rather the unfortunate result of living under certain circumstances. However, and I think it’s brilliant on Byrne’s part, issues of race are never mentioned in this issue at all, thus creating an interesting contrast with the final lines. 

Bloodsport

With an endless supply of highly technological weapons that can be teleported to his hands, Bloodsport is wreaking havoc in the streets of Metropolis. In fact, he nearly kills Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s best friend, and it’s the young reporter who alerts the Man of Steel about Bloodsport. What follows is an extraordinary sequence in which Byrne shows all his talent not only as a writer but also as an artist: Superman walks to the scene of the crime, and in the two last panels we see a silhouette of him opening the door, and the dead bodies on the ground. The use of a shadow for a character as luminous as Superman isn’t coincidental, the amount of dead people is shocking for Superman and that results evident in the last panel, in which the lack of background emphasizes the one thing Byrne wants to share with us, id est, Superman’s reaction. 

Shortly after that, Superman talks with captain Maggie Sawyer of the Major Crimes Unit. In her first appearance, Maggie Sawyer is portrayed as a tough, commanding and resilient woman. In future issues Byrne will reveal that Sawyer is a lesbian, thus creating the first important lesbian character in the DC Universe (much in the same way Byrne created Northstar, the first gay character in the Marvel Universe). In both situations, Byrne had to be very careful with the portrayal of these characters, as the Comics Code Authority categorically prohibited references to homosexuality. Interestingly enough, by having a black character and not talking explicitly about racism and by having a homosexual character and not talking about sexuality, Byrne only highlights the fact that discrimination is still something very real in today’s world. 

Lucy Lane & Jimmy Olsen

Another tremendously surprising moment in this issue is the sequence in which Bloodsport shoots Superman with a kryptonite bullet. In that situation, Jimmy Olsen is able to save Superman, and the Man of Steel goes under surgery so that the bullet fragments can be removed. Once again, in the final confrontation between Superman and Bloodsport, it’s Jimmy Olsen who saves the day, by finding Bloodsport’s brother. From the first lines of this issue, everything seemed to revolve around the Vietnam war, and in the final pages everything comes to a heartbreaking conclusion. Masterfully written and illustrated, this is one of the best Superman issues of Byrne’s first year.

"Dedicado a los nombres en el Muro Negro - y aquellos que los recuerdan" son las líneas finales de "Bloodsport!" (publicado originalmente en Superman # 4, abril de 1987). Cuando leí por primera vez este cómic, traducido al español por Ediciones Zinco, recuerdo haberme sentido bastante intrigado por esas líneas. ¿Qué era el muro negro? ¿Y por qué importaba tanto? Me pareció que tenía que ser un homenaje a la guerra de Vietnam, pero resulta que John Byrne se refería a la masacre racial de Tulsa en 1921.

Maggie Sawyer

La discriminación racial de los hombres blancos contra los negros provocó la tragedia de 1921. Más de 60 años después, Byrne sugiere que la discriminación todavía existe, aunque ha tomado nuevas formas y no es simplemente una confrontación física, sino algo profundamente arraigado en la estructura de la sociedad. En este número, Superman luchará contra Bloodsport, quizás el primer villano afroamericano que apareció en las páginas del Hombre de Acero. Excepto que no es necesariamente un súper villano, sino más bien el resultado desafortunado de vivir bajo ciertas circunstancias. Sin embargo, y creo que es brillante por parte de Byrne, las cuestiones raciales nunca se mencionan en este número, lo que crea un contraste interesante con las líneas finales.

Kryptonite bullet / bala de kriptonita

Con un suministro interminable de armas altamente tecnológicas que pueden teletransportarse a sus manos, Bloodsport está causando estragos en las calles de Metropolis. De hecho, casi mata a Jimmy Olsen, el mejor amigo de Superman, y es el joven reportero quien alerta al Hombre de Acero sobre Bloodsport. Lo que sigue es una secuencia extraordinaria en la que Byrne muestra todo su talento no sólo como escritor sino también como artista: Superman camina hacia la escena del crimen, y en las dos últimas viñetas vemos su silueta abriendo la puerta, y los cadáveres en el suelo. El uso de una sombra para un personaje tan luminoso como Superman no es casual, la cantidad de muertos es impactante para Superman y eso resulta evidente en la última viñeta, en la que la falta de fondos enfatiza lo único que Byrne quiere compartir con nosotros, es decir, la reacción de Superman.

Jimmy to the rescue! / Jimmy al rescate

Poco después de eso, Superman habla con la capitana Maggie Sawyer de la Unidad de Crímenes Mayores. En su primera aparición, Maggie Sawyer es retratada como una mujer fuerte, dominante y resistente. En números futuros, Byrne revelará que Sawyer es lesbiana, creando así el primer personaje lésbico importante en el Universo DC (de la misma manera que Byrne creó a Northstar, el primer personaje gay en el Universo Marvel). En ambas situaciones, Byrne tuvo mucho cuidado con la representación de estos personajes, ya que la Autoridad del Código de Comics prohibía categóricamente cualquier referencia a la homosexualidad. Curiosamente, al tener un personaje negro y no hablar explícitamente sobre el racismo y al tener un carácter homosexual y no hablar de la sexualidad, Byrne solo destaca el hecho de que la discriminación sigue siendo algo muy real en el mundo de hoy.

Otro momento tremendamente sorprendente en este número es la secuencia en la que Bloodsport dispara a Superman con una bala de kriptonita. En esa situación, Jimmy Olsen puede salvar a Superman, y el Hombre de Acero se somete a una cirugía para que se puedan quitar los fragmentos de bala. Una vez más, en el enfrentamiento final entre Superman y Bloodsport, es Jimmy Olsen quien salva el día al encontrar al hermano de Bloodsport. Desde las primeras líneas de este número, todo parecía girar en torno a la guerra de Vietnam, y en las últimas páginas todo llega a una desgarradora conclusión. Magistralmente escrito e ilustrado, este es uno de los mejores números de Superman del primer año de Byrne.
