I celebrated my birthday with a great selection of comics: Batman Fortress was very good, as well as Shaolin Cowboy Cruel to be Kin all thanks to Geof Darrow’s amazing art. The beginning of the new Daredevil series is quite promising, and X-Cellent continues to be entertaining and fun. My favorite issue of the month was Mind MGMT Bootleg # 1! And now, without further ado, here are July comics, as per solicitations:  

BATMAN FORTRESS #3

(W) Gary Whitta (A/CA) Darick Robertson. MIND MGMT BOOTLEG #1

Superman # 5 & 6 - John Byrne

Back when I first started collecting comics, most of my collecting habits revolved around Superman, and more specifically John Byrne’s Superman. In those days, I had access to the Spanish edition by Ediciones Zinco and it was always such a joy to read the letter columns and see other people’s opinions about Superman and other DC superheroes. I remember that Miguel G Saavedra, the man responsible for answering letters in the most humoristic and clever way possible, captured everyone’s attention when he said, “this is it, this is the issue in which Superman has a super erotic dream”.

Could that be possible? I remember how surprised I was when I read that. And certainly, through the years, “The Mummy Strikes” (originally published in Superman # 5, May 1987) has probably become famous due to the opening sequence, in which we see a reference to Legends, the big DC crossover from 1987, and more precisely, the first encounter between Superman and Wonder Woman in a post Crisis on Infinite Earths continuity. In the dream, we get to see what might have happened after the Man of Steel and the Amazon defeat their enemies. Or rather what Superman’s subconscious mind whishes it would have happened. 

"Legends" (1987)

In a way that was both elegant and visually striking, Byrne shows us first the battle, the moment of violence, and then the silent tension, the moment of passion between two of the most powerful superheroes of the DC Universe. Not a single word is said during these pages, and none are needed, such is the masterful storytelling of a legendary creator like Byrne. Immediately after waking up, Superman is surprised by how intense this dream was, and of course he has to accept that he feels attracted to Wonder Woman, a subplot that Byrne will explore further in future issues. 

Against Darkseid's hounds / Contra los sabuesos de Darkseid

Shortly after all of this Superman travels to South America as Clark Kent to see Lois Lane. Both journalists are fascinated by the most amazing archeological discovery of the century: the ruins of a highly technological civilization buried deep into the jungle. Of course, this leitmotif is characteristic of Byrne, and has appeared in Fantastic Four (a Roman legionnaire who finds a spacecraft 2000 years ago), Danger Unlimited (the remains of a long gone past hide super advanced technology) among others. 

Superman & Wonder Woman

After an extraordinary first issue, I’ll have to say that the conclusion “The Last Five Hundred” (Superman # 6, June 1987)  has good moments but overall it isn’t as powerful or meaningful as the first chapter. Here we discover the origin of all this technology, and then Superman ends up fighting against the last 500 minds of this extinct civilization whose minds reanimate an indestructible robot. John Byrne writes and pencils both issues, while Karl Kesel inks them and Tom Ziuco colors them.

After the dream / Después del sueño

As a funny anecdote, I’ll say that in the cover of Superman # 6 we see Lois Lane temporarily possessed by one of those minds, giving commands to the robot. “Destroy Superman” she shouts, however, in Ediciones Zinco someone messed up the translation (thinking that Lois Lane should be rooting for Superman and obviously not for the robot) and so Lois Lane says “Superman destroy it” (the robot).

Cuando empecé a coleccionar cómics, la mayoría de mis hábitos de colección giraban en torno a Superman, y más específicamente al Superman de John Byrne. En esos días tenía acceso a la edición en español de Ediciones Zinco y siempre era un placer leer la sección de cartas y ver las opiniones de otras personas sobre Superman y otros superhéroes de DC. Recuerdo que Miguel G Saavedra, el maestro encargado de contestar las cartas de la manera más humorística y astuta posible, acaparaba la atención de todos cuando decía “este es el cómic en el que Superman tiene un sueño súper erótico”.

Archeological exploration / Exploración arqueológica

¿Podría ser eso posible? Recuerdo lo sorprendido que estaba cuando leí eso. Y ciertamente, a lo largo de los años, “La momia ataca” (publicado originalmente en Superman #5, mayo de 1987) probablemente se ha vuelto famoso debido a la secuencia de apertura, en la que vemos una referencia a Legends, el gran crossover de DC de 1987, y más precisamente, el primer encuentro entre Superman y Wonder Woman en una continuidad posterior a las Crisis en Tierras Infinitas. En el sueño, podemos ver lo que podría haber sucedido después de que el Hombre de Acero y la Amazona derrotaran a sus enemigos. O más bien lo que la mente inconsciente de Superman desearía que hubiese sucedido.

The mystery increases / El misterio aumenta

De una manera elegante y visualmente impactante, Byrne nos muestra primero la batalla, el momento de la violencia, y luego la tensión silenciosa, el momento de la pasión entre dos de los superhéroes más poderosos del Universo DC. No hay una sola palabra en estas páginas, y no se necesita ninguna, tal es la narración visual magistral de un creador legendario como Byrne. Inmediatamente después de despertar, Superman se sorprende de lo intenso que fue este sueño y, por supuesto, tiene que aceptar que se siente atraído por Wonder Woman, una trama secundaria que Byrne explorará más a fondo en números futuros.

Poco después de todo esto, Superman viaja a Sudamérica como Clark Kent para ver a Lois Lane. Ambos periodistas están fascinados por el descubrimiento arqueológico más sorprendente del siglo: las ruinas de una civilización altamente tecnológica enterrada en lo profundo de la selva. Por supuesto, este leitmotiv es característico de Byrne, y ha aparecido en Fantastic Four (un legionario romano que encuentra una nave espacial hace 2000 años), Danger Unlimited (los restos de un pasado lejano esconden tecnología súper avanzada) entre otros.

The secret revealed? / ¿El secreto revelado?

Después de un primer número extraordinario, debo decir que la conclusión “The Last Five Hundred” (Superman # 6, junio de 1987) tiene buenos momentos pero en general no es tan poderosa ni significativa como el primer capítulo. Aquí descubrimos el origen de toda esta tecnología, y luego Superman acaba luchando contra las últimas 500 mentes de esta civilización extinta cuyas mentes reaniman a un robot indestructible. John Byrne escribe y dibuja a lápiz ambos números, mientras que Karl Kesel los entinta y Tom Ziuco los colorea.

Superman versus Host

Como anécdota chistosa, diré que en la portada de Superman # 6 vemos a Lois Lane poseída temporalmente por una de esas mentes, dando órdenes al robot. “Destruye a Superman” grita, sin embargo, en Ediciones Zinco alguien confundió la traducción (pensando que Lois Lane debería estar apoyando a Superman y obviamente no al robot) y entonces Lois Lane dice “Destrúyelo Superman” (al robot).

July films / películas de julio

In July I had the chance to go see Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), directed by Taika Waititi. Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) returns to Earth as the god of thunder, after spending time in outer space with Chris Pratt and the Guardians of the Galaxy. This time Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, has chosen Natalie Portman (Thor: The Dark World) to be the new goddess of thunder just in time to join forces with Thor against Gorr, the god butcher, magnificently played by Christian Bale (American Psycho). I’ve always loved Waititi as a filmmaker and I always say that humor is very much welcome in superhero movies, however this time I think it was a bit too much, as this feels more like a full blown out comedy with a few superhero elements in it and the constant jokes can make it difficult to take anything seriously. Still, there are brilliantly funny moments like the one involving Zeus, played by Russell Crowe (Noah). 

Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die (2021) truly marks the end of an era as Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), plays agent 007 for the last time. Léa Seydoux reprises her role, and remembers her traumatic past, when Rami Malek murdered her mother, and now that he has come back and forces her to kill Christoph Waltz, the leader of Spectre, nothing can stop him now. I must say I really enjoyed how everything that happened in previous movies comes together in one spectacular showdown. I was surprised by how captivating this movie turned out to be, and how well balanced it is when combining high octane action scenes with character development and more introspective moments. Although someone had spoiled the ending for me, I must say I was still shocked to see what happens to James Bond at the end of the movie. The cast also includes Ana de Armas, Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall) and Ben Whishaw (Baby). I’m glad that I rewatched all previous movies in anticipation of this one. Totally worth it!

Kenneth Branagh writes and directs Belfast (2021), a heartbreaking and intensely emotional journey through the eyes of Jude Hill, a boy who lives with his brother Lewis McAskie, his mother Caitríona Balfe and his father Jamie Dornan. Everything changes in 1969, when the conflicts in Ireland begin, and to preserve the innocence of childhood the parents of the protagonist are having a hard time deciding if they should stay or move to England. Belfast is unique in the way it shows at the beginning a tight knit community that is suddenly strained and fragmented due to religious fanatism. There are scenes of absolute beauty and sequences full of violence and destruction, there are moments of love between the characters and moments of struggle. Like life itself, nothing comes easy for the young protagonist, and even if our personal history is different it's impossible not to feel identified with him. Belfast will make you laugh and cry, and will enlighten you with its sober and elegant black and white cinematography. The cast includes Dame Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal) and Ciarán Hinds. I highly recommend it, it’s in my top 5 for 2021.

Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) plays Mr. Rogers, America’s beloved TV presenter in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019). I think Tom Hanks’ performance is extraordinary, replicating the voice and mannerisms of Mr. Rogers. The main story revolves around Matthew Rhys, a journalist who is still suffering due to traumatic events in his past, and whose anger is triggered by the presence of his father Chris Cooper. Mr. Rogers tries to help this man, and soon, one of the biggest celebrities in the US befriends a journalist who starts to delve into his past while trying to face the difficulties of the present. All in all, I think this was an interesting proposal but the plot isn’t as appealing as it should be and the movie as a whole feels somewhat incomplete.

En julio tuve la oportunidad de ir a ver Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), dirigida por Taika Waititi. Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) regresa a la Tierra como el dios del trueno, después de pasar un tiempo en el espacio exterior con Chris Pratt y los Guardians of the Galaxy. Esta vez Mjolnir, el martillo de Thor, ha elegido a Natalie Portman (Thor: The Dark World) para ser la nueva diosa del trueno justo a tiempo para unir fuerzas con Thor contra Gorr, el carnicero de los dioses, magníficamente interpretado por Christian Bale (American Psycho). Siempre me ha gustado Waititi como cineasta y siempre digo que el humor es muy bienvenido en las películas de superhéroes, sin embargo, esta vez creo que fue demasiado, ya que esto se siente más como una comedia total con algunos elementos de superhéroes y las bromas constantes pueden hacer que sea difícil tomar nada en serio. No Time to Die (2021), de Cary Joji Fukunaga, realmente marca el final de una era cuando Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) interpreta al agente 007 por última vez. Kenneth Branagh escribe y dirige Belfast (2021), un viaje desgarrador e intensamente emocional a través de los ojos de Jude Hill, un niño que vive con su hermano Lewis McAskie, su madre Caitríona Balfe y su padre Jamie Dornan. Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) interpreta al Sr. Rogers, el amado presentador de televisión de Estados Unidos en A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019). Creo que la actuación de Tom Hanks es extraordinaria, replicando la voz y los gestos del Sr. Rogers. La historia principal gira en torno a Matthew Rhys, un periodista que aún sufre por sucesos traumáticos de su pasado, y cuya ira se desencadena por la presencia de su padre Chris Cooper. El Sr. Rogers intenta ayudar a este hombre, y pronto, una de las mayores celebridades de los Estados Unidos se hace amigo de un periodista que comienza a indagar en su pasado mientras intenta enfrentar las dificultades del presente. Considerándolo todo, creo que esta fue una propuesta interesante, pero la trama no es tan atractiva como debería ser y la película en su conjunto se siente un tanto incompleta.

June films / películas de junio

After travelling to Perú in June, I had time to watch two big Hollywood blockbusters and a fabulous selection of international productions. Let’s start with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), arguably the best Sam Raimi movie in 20 years. Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) reprises his role as Marvel’s sorcerer supreme; when he meets America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, he realizes how complex and real the multiverse can be. Trying to protect America Chavez from the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, is quite a challenging task. Traveling through alternative universes and meeting different versions of our world turns out to be not only fascinating but also a unique way of portraying characters that until now had never been reunited before. For the first time in history, we get to see Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four and Professor X from the X-Men appearing alongside other Marvel characters. Just to see Patrick Stewart (X-Men: Days of Future Past) again was, in my opinion, worth the price of admission, and I absolutely loved the scenes with him. Unlike other Marvel movies, here the main antagonist has a strong and understandable motivation to do what she’s trying to do, and at the same time, Doctor Strange (in this and all other universes) must do everything in his power to defeat the Scarlet Witch. With an all-star cast also that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams (About Time), Benedict Wong, Hayley Atwell, John Krasinski (A Quite Place II) and Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde), an action-packed script, compelling characters and many wonderful surprises, this turns out to be Marvel’s best release in 2022.

Jurassic World Dominion (2022), directed by Colin Trevorrow, is a fitting end to the franchise. Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), protagonists of this new trilogy, are reunited with the original characters from the first Jurassic Park, Laura Dern (The Tale), Sam Neill (Blackbird) and Jeff Goldblum (The Grand Budapest Hotel) are back, and I must say I was extremely happy to see all of them again, reprising their classic roles. As usual, the leitmotif is the greed of a businessman, along with the ethical conundrums of cloning technology and the unstoppable power of the dinosaurs. It’s true that the movie might have a few plot holes, but overall, the story makes sense and the action sequences are splendid. Also, like I said before, it’s wonderful to see such a charismatic group of actors, young and old, sharing the screen. 

Julian Dabien and Cristina Tamagnini direct El maestro (2020), an Argentinian movie about Diego Velázquez, a rural teacher in the local elementary school, who takes care of his mother and is beloved by the community due to his commitment with improving the children’s education. However, when his friend Ezequiel Tronconi arrives to this small town, and stays with the protagonist, quickly everyone starts gossiping about the homosexual inclinations of both men. Soon, the close-minded and prejudiced parents refuse to have their children being taught by a homosexual and the protagonist’s life starts to fall apart so quickly that he barely has time to react. This is a tragic and honest view of how life can be damaged due to homophobia. 

Written and directed by Keith Behrman, Giant Little Ones (2018) is a fascinating exploration of teenage sexuality. Josh Wiggins and Darren Mann are best friends and popular kids in high school, they both are dating girls but always enjoy spending time away from them. Until one night, after getting drunk, they have a sexual experience with each other. That moment changes everything. Soon, the protagonist is attacked by the guy who used to be his best friend, and then the entire school seems to be against him. Ostracized and insulted, the boy must try to come to terms with his sexuality. In the process he’ll reach out to his father, Kyle MacLachlan, who came out as homosexual a few years ago causing a dramatic divorce. Definitely one of the best Canadian films I’ve seen in the past few years, I recommend it. 

Alvaro Delgado Aparicio’s Retablo (2017) is perhaps the first important Peruvian film entirely spoken in quechua, as it takes place in the Andes mountains. In a small town, Amiel Cayo has become, through years of hard work and dedication, a maestro retablista, an expert artisan. He’s married to Magaly Solier, a strong and assertive woman and he’s now trying to train his son, Junior Bejar, to follow in his footsteps as an artisan. Together, they create and sell beautiful retablos, and make enough money to survive in an area in which extreme poverty is most common. When the son secretly witnesses his father masturbating another man, he stops seeing the man as a revered figure and starts hating him for what his community considers the worst kind of sin. Slowly, the relationship between them disintegrates. And when the man is caught during another homosexual encounter, the villagers beat him within an inch of his life, the son starts realizing that his father has always been a good man and that whatever he has done in private doesn’t deserve that level of brutality. But now the son must also deal with the hatred and homophobia of the people around him, and especially the intolerance and anger of his own mother. To say this is one of the best Peruvian films I’ve seen recently would be an understatement.

Francisco Bianchi writes and directs Ruptures (ou André et Gabriel) (2016), a very interesting French short film dealing with breakups. The protagonist, Pierre Moure (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Un camion en réparation), is a young man filming a documentary about breakups, in the process he interviews different friends, gay and straight, trying to find a common element that might explain why love ended. Until he accidentally runs into Bruno Stierli, an old lover, they both wonder why they broke up years ago and now they have a renewed chance to explore their feelings and ask questions they didn’t dare to ask when they were younger.

Después de viajar a Perú en junio, tuve tiempo de ver dos grandes éxitos de taquilla de Hollywood y una fabulosa selección de producciones internacionales. Empecemos con Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), posiblemente la mejor película de Sam Raimi en 20 años. Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) repite su papel como el hechicero supremo de Marvel; cuando conoce a America Chavez, interpretada por Xochitl Gomez, se da cuenta de lo complejo y real que puede ser el multiverso. Tratar de proteger a América Chávez de la Bruja Escarlata, interpretada por Elizabeth Olsen, es una tarea bastante desafiante. Viajar por universos alternativos y conocer diferentes versiones de nuestro mundo resulta no solo fascinante sino también una forma única de retratar personajes que hasta ahora nunca antes se habían reunido. Por primera vez en la historia, podemos ver a Reed Richards de los Cuatro Fantásticos y al Profesor X de los X-Men junto a otros personajes de Marvel. Sólo con ver a Patrick Stewart (X-Men: Days of Future Past) de nuevo, en mi opinión, vale la pena ir al cine, y me encantaron las escenas con él. A diferencia de otras películas de Marvel, aquí la antagonista principal tiene una motivación fuerte y comprensible para hacer lo que está tratando de hacer y, al mismo tiempo, Doctor Strange (en este y en todos los demás universos) debe hacer todo lo que esté a su alcance para derrotar a la Bruja Escarlata. Con un elenco estelar que también incluye a Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams (About Time), Benedict Wong, Hayley Atwell, John Krasinski (A Quite Place II) y Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde), un guión lleno de acción, personajes convincentes y muchas sorpresas maravillosas, este resulta ser el mejor lanzamiento de Marvel en el 2022.

Como de costumbre, el leitmotiv es la codicia de un hombre de negocios, junto con los dilemas éticos de la tecnología de clonación y el poder imparable de los dinosaurios. Es cierto que la película tal vez tenga algunos agujerillos argumentales, pero en general, la historia tiene sentido y las secuencias de acción son espléndidas. Además, como dije antes, es maravilloso ver a un grupo tan carismático de actores, jóvenes y viejos, compartiendo la pantalla.

Escrita y dirigida por Keith Behrman, Giant Little Ones (2018) es una fascinante exploración de la sexualidad adolescente. Josh Wiggins y Darren Mann son mejores amigos y chicos populares en la escuela secundaria, ambos están saliendo con chicas pero siempre disfrutan pasar tiempo lejos de ellas. Hasta que una noche, después de emborracharse, tienen una experiencia sexual entre ellos. Ese momento lo cambia todo. Pronto, el protagonista es atacado por el chico que solía ser su mejor amigo, y luego toda la escuela parece estar en su contra. Aislado e insultado, el muchacho debe tratar de comprender su propia sexualidad. En el proceso, se acercará a su padre, Kyle MacLachlan, quien se declaró homosexual hace unos años y provocó un divorcio dramático. Definitivamente una de las mejores películas canadienses que he visto en los últimos años, la recomiendo.

Retablo (2017), de Álvaro Delgado Aparicio, es quizás la primera película peruana importante hablada íntegramente en quechua, ya que se desarrolla en la cordillera de los Andes. En un pequeño pueblo, Amiel Cayo se ha convertido, a través de años de arduo trabajo y dedicación, en un maestro retablista, un experto artesano. Está casado con Magaly Solier, una mujer fuerte y asertiva y ahora está tratando de entrenar a su hijo, Junior Bejar, para que siga sus pasos como artesano. Juntos, crean y venden hermosos retablos y ganan suficiente dinero para sobrevivir en una zona en la que la pobreza extrema es demasiado común. Cuando el hijo ve en secreto a su padre masturbando a otro hombre, deja de ver al adulto como una figura reverenciada y comienza a odiarlo a causa de aquello que su comunidad considera el peor tipo de pecado. Lentamente, la relación entre ellos se desintegra. Y cuando el hombre es atrapado durante otro encuentro homosexual, los aldeanos lo golpean hasta dejarlo moribundo, entonces el hijo comienza a darse cuenta de que su padre siempre ha sido un buen hombre y que todo lo que ha hecho en privado no merece ese nivel de brutalidad. Pero ahora el hijo también debe lidiar con el odio y la homofobia de las personas que lo rodean, y especialmente con la intolerancia y la ira de su propia madre. No basta con decir que esta es una de las mejores películas peruanas que he visto recientemente.

Francisco Bianchi escribe y dirige Ruptures (ou André et Gabriel) (2016), un cortometraje francés muy interesante que trata sobre las rupturas. El protagonista, Pierre Moure (famoso por su papel de adolescente gay en Un camion en réparation), es un joven que está filmando un documental sobre rupturas amorosas, en el proceso entrevista a diferentes amigos, gays y heterosexuales, tratando de encontrar un punto en común que podría explicar por qué se terminó el amor. Hasta que accidentalmente se encuentra con Bruno Stierli, un antiguo amante, ambos se preguntan por qué se separaron hace años y ahora tienen una nueva oportunidad de explorar sus sentimientos y hacer preguntas que no se atrevían a hacer cuando eran más jóvenes.
