March Comics / Cómics de marzo

March was great not only because of spring break but also because of the amazing comics I got. First of all, I wanted to talk about Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian Omnibus, a beautiful edition with the entire Barry Windsor-Smith run! Fantastic Four and Thor were good, but Invaders was better. Conan the Barbarian # 4 was surprising, definitely the best one in the series so far. Oliver and Die are among the best this month, but if I had to choose my favorite comic, then it would be the first issue of Spider-Man: Life Story. And now without further ado here are March comics as per solicitations:

Marzo fue un mes estupendo no solamente por las vacaciones de primavera sino también por los asombrosos cómics que recibí. Antes que nada, quería hablar de Conan the Barbarian Omnibus de Marvel, una preciosa edición con toda la etapa de Barry Windsor-Smith. Fantastic Four y Thor van bien, pero Invaders estuvo mejor. Conan the Barbarian # 4 fue sorprendente, el mejor de la serie hasta ahora. Oliver y Die estuvieron entre lo mejor del mes, pero si tuviera que elegir, mi cómic favorito del mes sería el primer número de Spider-Man: Life Story. Batman: Damned # 2 - Brian Azzarello & Lee Bermejo

The Joker is dead. Or is he? In the second issue of this impressive and also controversial miniseries aimed at mature readers, Batman continues to work alongside John Constantine and Deadman to unravel the mystery behind the death of his archnemesis, however, in the process he is also forced to confront his own past and to relive experiences buried a long time ago. 

Something that I find especially audacious in Azzarello’s version of Batman is the way in which we are made privy to the secrets of the Wayne family. This is, indeed, “a far less idyllic childhood as often portrayed”, as Rich Johnston explains. And I wholeheartedly agree with him. Batman writers have often offered us a vision of the past that seemed perhaps too good to be true: caring and kind parents, a happy childhood, a Gotham City not yet plagued by crime or corruption.

However, in Batman: Damned, Azzarello plays with the somewhat melodramatic notion that the rich also cry. After all, one might ask, having millions of dollars guarantees happiness? Or, on the contrary, being a millionaire means to be constantly concerned about the possibility of loss? What we see here are the conflicts between Martha and Thomas Wayne. Lee Bermejo designs one of the most majestic versions of Wayne manor ever, and in a magnificent flashback scene, he has Bruce Wayne dressed up as the Lone Ranger. But Thomas Wayne pays no attention to his son, busy as he is quarreling with Martha.

Was Thomas Wayne always the noble, kindhearted philanthropist that we’ve seen in every Batman comic? Or did he also have feet of clay? Did the couple constantly yell at each other, threatening with divorce? Because that is exactly what we see in some of the most dramatic pages of this issue, wonderfully illustrated by Bermejo. 

Wayne Manor

All readers know that Batman never uses firearms because his parents were murdered at gunpoint. However, Azzarello suggests a less spectacular explanation for that. Frustrated due to his parents constant fighting, the young Bruce can’t understand what’s going on, and due to his immaturity he immediately blames his mother, and tries to shoot at her with his Lone Ranger revolver. Martha makes Bruce promise that he’ll “never point a gun to anyone”, and that is a promise Bruce will keep as Batman. 

When Martha takes Bruce to a meeting she has with a private detective, she can finally answer the question that was tormenting her: Did Thomas cheat on her? And after seeing the photographs provided by the detective, no words are necessary to explain why she’s crying. Bermejo intensifies the dramatic tension with two superb silent panels in which Martha’s movements are more than enough to convey her emotions.  

Martha Wayne & Bruce Wayne

Bermejo establishes a visual connection between the fire of a lighter and the fire of a building, a fire from which Batman needs to be rescued by no other than the Demon Etrigan. Weakened, hurt and exhausted, the Dark Knight is an easy prey for an enraged Harley Quinn, who decides to unbutton Batman’s pants, in a very aggressive seduction scene. The third issue will be the last one and, personally, I can’t wait to see what’s the miniseries outcome.

En el segundo número de esta impresionante y también controversial miniserie dirigida a lectores maduros, Batman continúa trabajando junto a John Constantine y Deadman para desentrañar el misterio detrás de la muerte de su archienemigo. Sin embargo, en el proceso también se ve obligado a enfrentar su propio pasado. Y revivir experiencias largo tiempo enterradas.

"The rich also cry" / "los ricos también lloran"

Algo que me parece especialmente audaz en la versión de Batman de Azzarello es la forma en que estamos al tanto de los secretos de la familia Wayne. Esto es, de hecho, "una infancia mucho menos idílica de la que se retrata con frecuencia", como explica Rich Johnston. Y estoy totalmente de acuerdo con él. Los escritores de Batman a menudo nos han ofrecido una visión del pasado que quizás parecía demasiado buena para ser verdad: padres cariñosos y amables, una infancia feliz, una ciudad Gotham que aún no está plagada de delitos o corrupción.

Sin embargo, en Batman: Damned, Azzarello juega con la noción algo melodramática de que los ricos también lloran. Después de todo, uno podría preguntarse, ¿tener millones de dólares garantiza la felicidad? ¿O, por el contrario, ser millonario significa estar constantemente preocupados por la posibilidad de la pérdida? Pero Thomas Wayne no le presta atención a su hijo, debido a su altercado con Martha.

Etrigan

¿Thomas Wayne fue siempre el noble y bondadoso filántropo que hemos visto en todos los cómics de Batman? ¿O también tenía pies de barro? ¿La pareja gritaba constantemente, amenazando con el divorcio? Porque eso es exactamente lo que vemos en algunas de las páginas más dramáticas de este ejemplar, maravillosamente ilustradas por Bermejo.

Todos los lectores saben que Batman nunca usa armas de fuego porque sus padres fueron asesinados con una pistola. Sin embargo, Azzarello sugiere una explicación menos espectacular. Frustrado debido a la constante disputa entre sus padres, el joven Bruce no puede entender lo que está pasando y, debido a su inmadurez, inmediatamente culpa a su madre e intenta dispararle con su revólver de Llanero Solitario. Martha le hace prometer a Bruce que "nunca apuntará con un arma a nadie", y esa es una promesa que Bruce mantendrá como Batman.

Harley Quinn

Cuando Martha lleva a Bruce a una reunión que tiene con un detective privado, finalmente puede responder a la pregunta que la atormentaba: ¿Thomas le está siendo infiel? Y después de ver las fotografías proporcionadas por el detective, no hay palabras necesarias para explicar sus lágrimas. Bermejo intensifica la tensión dramática con dos magníficas viñetas silenciosss en las que los movimientos de Martha son más que suficientes para transmitir sus emociones.

Bermejo establece una conexión visual entre el fuego de un encendedor y el incendio de un edificio, un incendio del cual Batman necesita ser rescatado por el Demonio Etrigan. Debilitado, herido y agotado, el Caballero Oscuro es una presa fácil para una Harley Quinn enfurecida, que decide desabotonar los pantalones de Batman, en una escena de seducción muy agresiva. El tercer ejemplar será el último y, personalmente, no puedo esperar a ver cuál es el desenlace de la miniserie.

March Films / Películas de marzo

Jordan Peele writes and directs Get Out (2017), a captivating story that portrays interracial relationships in a unique way. When Daniel Kaluuya decides to meet the parents of his girlfriend Allison Williams, racial tensions and questions of power and dominance arise. However, there is much more going on than simple racism, and what begins as a weird and intriguing premise turns out to be an intense and suspenseful horror story. The cast includes Caleb Landry Jones (Antiviral), Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich) and Bradley Whitford.

In 2014, Dominic Haxton directed Tonight it’s Me, and 2 years later he wrote and directed Tonight it’s You (2016), once again starring Jake Robbins, famous for his multiple roles as a gay teenager in Interior. Leather Bar, Teens Like Phil and Tonight it’s Me. Haxton creates a harrowing and disturbing story about the fears and expectations of young gay men hooking app through apps like Grindr. Jake Robbins agrees to meet Ian Lerch for a night of casual sex, but that is the beginning of a nightmare that will haunt him for life. This is an extremely powerful and intense horror short film. Highly recommended!

Sven Hensel’s Cruising (2016) is an interesting German short film that revolves around apps like Grindr, that reduce most interactions to anonymous sex. It’s in this context in which Philipp Uhlig, a shy, gay teenager that spends most of his time with his straight friends, Florian Teiss and Kevin Schellenberger, decides to hook up with random guys, night after night. Until he meets Maximilian Dietz, and although at first their relationship starts with an erection and ends with an orgasm, the need for a stronger, deeper connection, grows. 

Michael Van Devere writes and directs American Sleeper (2016); described as a bromance in the military, it is actually an experimental short-film about a young man who can’t find a suitable outlet to express all the affection he has been repressing toward one of his friends and comrades in the army. An interesting premise.

Peruvian filmmaker Javier Fuentes-León writes and directs Contracorriente (2009), a beautiful and poignant film about relationships and the restrictions placed upon us by society. Cristian Mercado is a strong man, respected by all, and considered by many as the leader of his community. But he doesn’t seem to be interested in his pregnant wife, Tatiana Astengo. In fact, he often has sex with another man, Manolo Cardona. This forbidden relationship is kept as a shameful secret, until one of them has an accident and dies. However, the dead lover remains as a phantasm, and forces the protagonist to reevaluate his sexual identity and his masculine role in a traditional society. Contracorriente is a magnificent film, rich in emotions, a unique blend of beauty, sorrow and loss.

Cruising (2016) de Sven Hensel es un interesante cortometraje alemán que gira en torno a apps como Grindr, que reducen la mayoría de las interacciones al sexo anónimo. Es en este contexto en el que Philipp Uhlig, un adolescente tímido y gay que pasa la mayor parte del tiempo con sus amigos heterosexuales, Florian Teiss y Kevin Schellenberger, decide follar con hombres al azar, noche tras noche. Hasta que conoce a Maximilian Dietz, y aunque al principio su relación comienza con una erección y termina con un orgasmo, la necesidad de una conexión más fuerte y más profunda crece.

Michael Van Devere escribe y dirige American Sleeper (2016); descrito como un romance varonil en el ejército, en realidad es un cortometraje experimental sobre un joven que no puede encontrar una manera adecuada de expresar todo el afecto que ha estado reprimiendo hacia uno de sus amigos y compañeros en el ejército. Una premisa interesante.

El cineasta peruano Javier Fuentes-León escribe y dirige Contracorriente (2009), una película hermosa y conmovedora sobre las relaciones y las restricciones que nos impone la sociedad. Cristian Mercado es un hombre fuerte, respetado por todos y considerado por muchos como el líder de su comunidad. Pero no parece estar interesado en su esposa embarazada, Tatiana Astengo. De hecho, a menudo tiene relaciones sexuales con otro hombre, Manolo Cardona. Esta relación prohibida se mantiene como un secreto vergonzoso, hasta que uno de ellos tiene un accidente y muere. February Comics / Cómics de febrero

In the shortest month of the year I had the chance to read a lot of amazing comics! I got 2 classics X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills and Dave Gibbons’ The Originals. Millar is doing a good job with Prodigy, Magic Order and Sharkey. Jason Aaron favorably surprised me with Conan the Barbarian and Thor. Crypt of Shadows and Journey Into Unknown Worlds were fun. Die #3 was extraordinary, but if I had to choose my favorite comic of the month then that’d be Oliver #1. And now, without further ado, here are February comics as per solicitations:

En el mes más corto del año tuve la oportunidad de leer muchos cómics estupendos. Empezando con 2 clásicos X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills y The Originals de Dave Gibbons. Millar está haciendo un buen trabajo con Prodigy, Magic Order and Sharkey. Jason Aaron me sorprendió favorablemente con Conan the Barbarian y Thor. Crypt of Shadows y Journey Into Unknown Worlds fueron divertidos. Die #3 fue extraordinario, pero si tuviera que elegir mi cómic favorito del mes sería Oliver #1. Blogging away

It’s been a while since I shared information about the blog with you guys, and now that I’m at the airport in Milwaukee waiting for my flight to Sacramento, I decided to talk a little bit about what goes into the decision process of what to write about when it comes to this particular blog, which as long time readers know, focuses mostly on comics but also on film. 

First of all, for whatever reason, seems like some of my posts are incredibly popular compared to others, as I can see in Blogger’s data. First place, with almost a quarter of a million hits, goes to Severed #1, which was an amazing comic and due to the success of this post in 2011, I started reviewing many of Image’s new miniseries. Second place goes to Think Tank #1, with 230,000 hits, again another Image / Top Cow new series from 2012. Third place goes to the last issue of Severed, which once again proves how successful the series was and how many readers were interested in finding reviews about it. The fourth place is a short post about my comics (I heavily promoted this one back in 2011, so that’s how I explain the big numbers). The fifth place is a post about the comics I buy on a monthly basis, it’s very rare that this kind of posts could gain so much traction, but for some reason, that’s what happened with this one. The sixth place is Aetheric Mechanics, probably one of the first Avatar Press series that I reviewed, which encouraged me to talk more about other Avatar titles. The seventh place is The Theater #1, a new series published by Zenescope in 2011. The eighth place is The Legion, I’m a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and with over 40,000 hits I realized in 2014 that it was a good idea to post more about the young heroes of the 31st century. And at last but not least, we have Days of Scandals Past, in reference to Days of Future Past, the classic Claremont/Byrne X-Men saga which, in 2014, turned into a movie directed by Bryan Singer. It took me almost a week of research to write that post, which became the most controversial post ever published on this blog, now that Singer is again in the middle of a sexual scandal, you might just as well (re)read it:

El primer lugar, con casi un cuarto de millón de visitas, fue para Severed # 1, que fue un cómic increíble y debido al éxito de esta publicación en 2011, comencé a revisar muchas de las nuevas miniseries de Image. El segundo lugar es para Think Tank # 1, con 230,000 visitas, nuevamente otra serie de Image / Top Cow de 2012. El tercer lugar es para el último número de Severed, que demuestra una vez más el éxito de la serie y la cantidad de lectores interesados en encontrar reseñas. El cuarto lugar es una breve publicación sobre mis cómics (promocioné mucho este post el año 2011, así es como explico la gran cantidad de visitas). El quinto lugar es un post sobre los cómics que compro mensualmente, es muy raro que este tipo de posts obtenga tanta atención, pero por alguna razón, así fue como sucedió.
