August Comics / Cómics de agosto

I only got a few comics in August but I promise there will be more in September! The Boys Dear Becky and Strange Adventures continue to amaze me! And I love the new hardcover edition with Neil Gaiman stories. I’ve always been a Young Avengers fan, and Zdarsky and Oliveira really hit a home run with Emperor Hulkling, my favorite issue of the month! And now, without further ado, here are August comics as per solicitations:

BOYS DEAR BECKY #3

(W) Garth Ennis (A) Russell Braun (CA) Darick Robertson. Hughie fills Annie in on some of the CIA's anti-supe tactics in the years since the Boys were last around, but she has some pressing questions of her own. Turns out last month I ended up focusing on Anton Yelchin, who tragically died at age 27 in 2016. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond (2016), but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The Enterprise is destroyed by a new alien race that has a strong reason to hate the United Federation of Planets. Robert Orci returns as a screenwriter and the result is quite good. Star Trek Beyond has a lot of action and that sense of adventure one would expect from a crew that has boldly gone where no one has gone before. It was also great to see such an amazing group of actors reprising their roles: Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness), Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin (Green Room), as well as having new additions like Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella. If you’re a trekkie, you can’t miss this one. 

Fierce People (2005), directed by Griffin Dunne and based on Dirk Wittenborn’s book, is a very unique and special film that follows the life of Anton Yelchin (Fright Night), a teenager with a passion for anthropology, who is suddenly taken by his mother, Diane Lane (Cinema Verité), a recovering drug addict, to a completely new and alien environment, the estate of Donald Sutherland (Il Casanova), one of the richest men in the US, who lives a carefree life full of indulgence and extravagance. For the protagonist, he has entered into a new world, a new tribe of people, and he does his best to fit in. He meets Chris Evans (Puncture) and they quickly become friends, and he also falls in love with Kristen Stewart (Equals), the heiress that everyone is after. With an all-star cast and a captivating script, Dunne makes us understand what it means to fall into a strange land full of bizarre rituals, but above all, the filmmaker transmits with clarity and emotion the turmoil of adolescence. This coming of age story, of course, isn’t all about happiness, and when the boy is raped in the middle of the night by an anonymous assailant, he must decide whether to remain there and pretend like nothing has happened, or keep fighting and find out who did that terrible thing. 

Like Crazy (2011), by Drake Doremus, is a love story about two college students, Anton Yelchin (House of D) and Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story); he’s American and she’s British. At the beginning everything is love and happiness, but then she overstays here visa, and when tries to re-enter the US she’s immediately deported. What started as a simple love story turns out to be a rather peculiar exploration of the immigration laws of the US. Doremus highlights the pain and the frustration experimented by the young couple, who are now in different continents. At some point the protagonist begins a relationship with Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), and that makes sense, after all, proximity is always the base for most relationships. I think in general there are promising ideas here, but the execution overall is a bit lacking. 

Verdensvevde kropper (2015) is a Norwegian short film written and directed by Truls Krane Meby. A 12-year old boy, Heine Dybvik, is delighted to see that his parents have bought a computer. It’s the early 90s, the Internet is still starting, but there are already porn webpages, which the boy eagerly awaits to see. Staying up late and coming with absurd excuses, the protagonist masturbates constantly while watching porn, but one day he discovers that his father has also been doing the same. It’s only a matter of time before the mom discovers what’s going on, but who will take the blame for that? The filmmaker depicts really well the hypocrisy of the adults as well as the boy’s naiveté.

Resulta que el mes pasado terminé enfocándome en Anton Yelchin, que murió trágicamente a los 27 años en el 2016. No estaba seguro de cuál sería la recepción de Star Trek Beyond (2016) de Justin Lin, pero debo admitir que me sorprendió gratamente. La nave Enterprise es destruida por una nueva raza alienígena que tiene una fuerte razón para odiar a la Federación Unida de Planetas. Robert Orci vuelve como guionista y el resultado es bastante bueno. Star Trek Beyond tiene mucha acción y ese sentido de aventura que uno esperaría de una tripulación que ha ido audazmente a donde nadie más ha ido antes. También fue genial ver a un grupo tan increíble de actores repitiendo sus papeles:  Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness), Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin (Green Room), además de tener nuevas incorporaciones como Idris Elba y Sofia Boutella. Si eres un trekkie, no te la  puedes perder.

En algún momento el protagonista comienza una relación con Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), y eso tiene sentido, después de todo, la proximidad es siempre la base de la mayoría de las relaciones. Creo que, en general, hay ideas prometedoras aquí, pero la ejecución en general es un poco deficiente.

Verdensvevde kropper (2015) es un cortometraje noruego escrito y dirigido por Truls Krane Meby. Un chico de 12 años, Heine Dybvik, está encantado de ver que sus padres han comprado una computadora. Estamos a principios de los 90, El internet todavía está comenzando, pero ya hay páginas web pornográficas, que el chico espera ver ansiosamente. Flinch # 3

The third issue of Flinch was released in August 1999, with a striking cover by Sue Coe, an English illustrator whose is better known for her works in museums and art galleries than her occasional contributions to the American comic book industry. Of course, this is one of the things that made Flinch so interesting over 20 years ago, the fact that you’d be constantly running into new talents.

The first story, “Night Terrors”, is written by John Rozum and penciled and inked by Kelley Jones, an extraordinary artist who follows the steps of such horror masters as Bernie Wrightson. The result is a captivating tale about a boy who is convinced by his friends that a great evil will show up at midnight. In the hands of a lesser writer this would be a simply anecdotical tale, but Rozum creates interesting and peculiar characters, and transports the horror from the realm of childhood imagination into the dull reality of a middle-class home. Of course, Jones’ art is exquisite. 

And talking about new talents, in the same way that I discovered a completely new creative team in issue # 2, in “A Walk in the Park” writer Scott Cunningham, of whom I had never heard of before, surprised me with a story full of suspense, tension and revenge. Marcelo Frusin provides the artwork for this very realistic representation of vengeance.

However, my favorite story is “Satanic”, written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Kieron Dwyer. This is as much horror as it is a parody of Titanic. In Ennis story, the wealthy passengers of the famous ship are killing the poor people in second and third class to feast on their flesh. In addition to unleashing cannibalism, the millionaires also participate in satanic activities throughout the journey.

In “Satanic”, the horror is experimented by the low class, unable to defend themselves from the insatiable appetite of the rich people. How can you turn the tragic sinking of the Titanic into a terrifying allegory of the inherent conflict between different social classes while combining it all with a rather satanic perspective? Of course, only an Irish writer like Ennis could answer this question (and silently, since there is hardly any dialog in this story).

El tercer número de Flinch se publicó en agosto de 1999, con una llamativa portada de Sue Coe, una ilustradora inglesa que es más conocida por sus trabajos en museos y galerías de arte que por sus contribuciones ocasionales a la industria del cómic estadounidense. Por supuesto, esta es una de las cosas que hizo que Flinch fuera tan interesante hace más de 20 años, el hecho de encontrar constantemente con nuevos talentos.

La primera historia, “Terrores nocturnos”, está escrita por John Rozum y dibujada a lápiz y entintada por Kelley Jones, un artista extraordinario que sigue los pasos de maestros del terror como Bernie Wrightson. El resultado es una historia cautivadora sobre un niño que es convencido por sus amigos de que un gran mal aparecerá a medianoche. En manos de un escritor menor, este sería un relato simplemente anecdótico, pero Rozum crea personajes interesantes y peculiares, y transporta el horror del reino de la imaginación infantil a la aburrida realidad de un hogar de clase media. Por supuesto, el arte de Jones es exquisito.

Y hablando de nuevos talentos, de la misma manera que descubrí un equipo creativo completamente nuevo en el número 2, en "Un paseo en el parque" el escritor Scott Cunningham, del que nunca había oído hablar antes, me sorprendió con una historia llena de suspenso, tensión y venganza. Marcelo Frusin proporciona el arte para esta representación muy realista de la venganza.

Sin embargo, mi historia favorita es “Satánico”, escrita por Garth Ennis e ilustrada por Kieron Dwyer. Esto es horror a la vez que una parodia del Titanic. The Avengers # 5 & 6 - Kurt Busiek & George Pérez

When Kurt Busiek relaunched The Avengers in 1998, he was very respectful with continuity in general. There are constant references to what is going on in the individual titles of Captain America, Thor and Iron Man, but also references to previous events in The Avengers and before the Heroes Reborn saga. Before the relaunch, the Avengers had disappeared from Earth and many believed them dead. It’s this misconception which fuels the suspiciousness of the Squadron Supreme, magnificently depicted in George Pérez’s covers and interior art.

In “Accusation Most Foul” (originally published in The Avengers # 5, June 1998), the Squadron Supreme accuses the Avengers of being impostors. Created in 1971 by Roy Thomas, the Squadron Supreme has always been a homage to the Justice League of America which, in turn, is DC’s equivalent of the Avengers. The members of this unique squad are Hyperion (who superpowers are similar to the ones Superman has), Nighthawk (an alternative version of Batman), Doctor Spectrum (a facsimile of Green Lantern), Power Princess (Wonder Woman for all intents and purposes), and the Whizzer (whose super speed reminds us of the Flash). 

In the fight between the Avengers and the Squadron Supreme, Captain America realizes that there is something wrong with Warbird, as her power levels seem to be decreasing considerably. In “Earth’s Mightiest Frauds?” (The Avengers # 6, July 1998), the Avengers must prove to the world that they’re the real deal, and for that Warbird’s cunning will be essential. If the Avengers are victorious in this mission against the Squadron Supreme, it’s only thanks to Carol Danvers (AKA Warbird, and nowadays Captain Marvel). As it turns out, the Squadron Supreme had been mind-controlled by the Corruptor, a situation that enrages Captain America, who says: “this started because you let yourselves get mind-controlled -- for what -- the third time, the fourth?”.

For me, one of the best moments here takes place in the Avengers mansion. As we saw in “Too Many Avengers!”, Carol Danvers tries to hide the fact that she has been drinking alcohol more than usual, something that only former alcoholic Tony Stark notices. Here, she is drinking openly, and tries to convince Wanda Maximoff (AKA the Scarlet Witch) to drink some whisky. The mutant refuses and tells Carol that she shouldn’t be drinking so much. There is a brilliant moment when Carol answers that alcohol doesn’t make you gain weight as fast as ice cream does.

Although on the surface, it seems like the most important thing here was the fight between the Avengers and the Squadron Supreme, everything revolves around Carol Danvers. The story begins with her training with Captain America, and ends up with her arguing against the Sentinel of Liberty. She’s also the one responsible for the Avenger’s victory, and yet she is under the scrutiny of Captain America and even the Scarlet Witch considers that her colleague might be turning into an alcoholic. The fascinating end of this very personal saga will come in the next issue.

Cuando Kurt Busiek relanzó The Avengers en 1998, fue muy respetuoso con la continuidad en general. Hay constantes referencias a lo que está sucediendo en los títulos individuales de Capitán América, Thor y Iron Man, pero también referencias a eventos anteriores en Los Vengadores y antes de la saga Heroes Reborn. Antes del relanzamiento, los Vengadores habían desaparecido de la Tierra y muchos los creían muertos. Es este concepto erróneo lo que alimenta la sospecha del Escuadrón Supremo, magníficamente representado por las portadas y el arte interior de George Pérez.

Squadron Supreme

En "La acusación más vil" (publicado originalmente en The Avengers # 5, junio de 1998), el Escuadrón Supremo acusa a los Vengadores de ser impostores. Creados en 1971 por Roy Thomas, el Escuadrón Supremo siempre ha sido un homenaje a la Liga de la Justicia de América que, a su vez, es el equivalente de DC de los Vengadores. Los miembros de este escuadrón especial son Hyperion (cuyos superpoderes son similares a los que tiene Superman), Nighthawk (una versión alternativa de Batman), Doctor Spectrum (un facsímil de Green Lantern), Power Princess (Wonder Woman para todos los efectos) y Whizzer (cuya supervelocidad nos recuerda a Flash).

The Avengers versus the Squadron Supreme

En la pelea entre los Vengadores y el Escuadrón Supremo, el Capitán América se da cuenta de que algo anda mal con Warbird, ya que sus niveles de poder parecen estar disminuyendo considerablemente. ¿En "Los fraudes más poderosos de la Tierra?" (The Avengers # 6, julio de 1998), los Vengadores deben demostrarle al mundo que son auténticos, y para eso, la astucia de Warbird será esencial. Si los Vengadores salen victoriosos en esta misión contra el Escuadrón Supremo, es sólo gracias a Carol Danvers (alias Warbird, y hoy en día Capitana Marvel). Resulta que el Escuadrón Supremo había sido controlado mentalmente por el Corruptor, una situación que enfurece al Capitán América, quien dice: “esto comenzó porque se dejaron controlar mentalmente por la tercera vez, la cuarta vez?”.

Para mí, uno de los mejores momentos ocurre en la mansión de los Vengadores. Como vimos en “Too Many Avengers!”, Carol Danvers intenta ocultar el hecho de que ha estado bebiendo más alcohol de lo habitual, algo que sólo el ex-alcohólico Tony Stark percibe. Aquí, ella está bebiendo abiertamente e intenta convencer a Wanda Maximoff (también conocida como la Bruja Escarlata) para que beba un poco de whisky. La mutante se niega y le dice a Carol que no debería beber tanto. Hay un momento brillante en el que Carol responde que el alcohol no engorda tan rápido como lo hace el helado.

Aunque en la superficie parece que lo más importante aquí fue la pelea entre los Vengadores y el Escuadrón Supremo, todo gira en torno a Carol Danvers. La historia comienza con su entrenamiento con el Capitán América y termina con ella discutiendo contra el Centinela de la Libertad. Ella también es la responsable de la victoria de los Vengadores y, sin embargo, está bajo el escrutinio del Capitán América e incluso la Bruja Escarlata considera que su colega podría estar convirtiéndose en una alcohólica. El fascinante final de esta saga tan personal llegará en el próximo número.
