Swamp Thing # 49 & 50 - Moore, Bissette, Totleben & Woch

Words are an important part of a spell, much in the same way that good writers can create real magic using only words. “The Summoning” (published in Swamp Thing # 46, June 1986), it’s all about conjurors, spells and the mighty magic of literature. 

Alan Moore summons some of the most obscure characters of the DC Universe, those who dabble with the arcane, those with wizardry enough to conquer the astral plane. John Constantine reunites Baron Winter, Sargon the Sorcerer, Dr. Occult, Steve Dayton (formerly known as Mento of the Doom Patrol), Zatara and Zatanna. Meanwhile, Swamp Thing reunites Deadman, the Phantom Stranger, Doctor Fate, the Spectre and the Demon Etrigan. The war against the primordial darkness is about to begin, and not even the creatures of hell are comfortable with this new threat (Etrigan admits “favoring the devil that we know”).

When I first read “The Summoning” I realized how Machiavellian John Constantine can be. He manipulates Baron Winter to use his mansion in Georgetown as an operations center, he lies to Steve Dayton telling him that his life won’t be in danger, and his cynicism never prevents him from smiling as he remembers his sessions of tantric sex with Zatanna, the daughter of the prestigious warlock Zatara. Stan Woch and Alfredo Alcalá capture the monstrous essence of hell, while portraying an ominous atmosphere in the real world, with a special emphasis on the twisted expressions of Constantine and his colleagues.

“I have seen… human beings… both tormentors and tormented… locked into a dismal circle… of pain and retribution… gender against gender… race against race… generations lost… in a maze of death… and guilt… and gunfire” ponders Swamp Thing, as he remembers his journey through the darkest corners of America. His days of traveling are over. “American Gothic” has ended. And that’s the beginning of “The End” (July 1986), a double-sized anniversary edition that celebrates the 50th issue of Swamp Thing. It’s here that everything gets kicked into “the high gear that whirls us remorselessly towards the cycle’s climax”, as Charles Shaar Murray affirms.

Deep in the wastelands of hell, the final battle against the primordial darkness begins. Etrigan the Demon is the first to attack, but his fatalism marks his defeat; the second one is Doctor Fate, but his contempt causes his downfall; the third one is the Spectre, the most powerful creature on Earth, Heaven and Hell, but not even his divine thirst for vengeance is enough. Finally, Swamp Thing surprises the primordial darkness with his calmness, his roots in nature, and although he won’t harm his enemy in return he receives no harm at all. His conclusions, nevertheless, deserve to be highlighted: “the black soil… is rich in foul decay… yet glorious life… springs from it […] perhaps evil… is the humus formed by virtue’s decay… and perhaps… perhaps it is from that dark, sinister loam… that virtue grows strongest”.

Meanwhile, on Earth, the séance continues. John Constantine tries to channelize all the mystic energies at his disposal to help Swamp Thing and his allies. But they’re dealing with forces beyond human comprehension and the result is tragic: Sargon the Sorcerer burns alive, and then Zatara suffers the same agony. Finally Steve Dayton’s mind collapses. Constantine and the remaining survivors understand the high cost of victory.

As Neil Gaiman observes on the prologue “the consummation of the ‘American Gothic’ storyline was twice the length of a regular comic, it could still be longer. Armageddon comes and goes in forty pages, leaving in its wake a number of dead and shattered individuals and a philosophy that practically any religion would find heretical –or at least uncomfortable. It also marked the end of the Bissette and Totleben art team”. 

Indeed, this is the final issue illustrated by the marvelously talented Stephen Bissette and John Totleben. Their farewell is a deeply evocative, beautiful depiction of the apocalypse, of the end of all things, and they manage to create the definitive evil, something so powerful that can actually scare the demons of hell. Bissette, Veitch and Totleben bestow upon Doctor Fate, Spectre and the others a sense of dignity but also despair. The “spontaneous combustion” of Sargon and Zatara is brutal, and they apply the most delicate textures of the brush to show us how shocking can it be to see human flesh burning.

Las palabras son una pieza clave de los hechizos, del mismo modo que los buenos escritores pueden crear magia de verdad usando sólo palabras. "La invocación" (publicada en "Swamp Thing" # 46, junio de 1986), es sobre conjuros, hechizos y la poderosa magia de la literatura. 

Alan Moore convoca a algunos de los personajes más oscuros del Universo DC, aquellos que experimentan con lo arcano, aquellos con hechicería suficiente para conquistar el plano astral. John Constantine reúne a Baron Winter, Sargon el hechicero, Dr. Occult, Steve Dayton (conocido en el pasado como Mento, de la Patrulla Condenada), Zatara y Zatanna. Mientras tanto, Swamp Thing reúne a Deadman, Phantom Stranger, Doctor Fate, Spectre y el demonio Etrigan. La guerra con la oscuridad primordial está por empezar, y ni siquiera las criaturas del infierno se sienten cómodas ante esta nueva amenaza (Etrigan admite “favorecer al diablo que conocemos”).

Cuando leí "La invocación" por primera vez, me di cuenta de lo maquiavélico que podía ser John Constantine. Él manipula a Baron Winter para usar su mansión en Georgetown como centro de operaciones, le miente a Steve Dayton diciéndole que su vida no correrá peligro, y su cinismo nunca le impide sonreír mientras recuerda sus sesiones de sexo tántrico con Zatanna, la hija del prestigioso brujo, Zatara. Stan Woch y Alfredo Alcalá capturan la esencia monstruosa del infierno, mientras que expresan una atmósfera ominosa en el mundo real, con énfasis especial en las expresiones retorcidas de Constantine y sus colegas.

Sus días de viaje han terminado. “American Gothic” ha terminado. Y ese es el principio de “El fin” (julio de 1986), una edición de aniversario extra grande que celebra el número 50 de "Swamp Thing". Es aquí donde todo llega "a la máxima velocidad que nos arremolina sin remordimientos hacia el clímax del ciclo", tal como afirma Charles Shaar Murray.

En lo más profundo del infierno, comienza la batalla final contra la oscuridad primordial. El demonio Etrigan es el primero en atacar, pero su fatalismo causa su derrota; el segundo es Doctor Fate, pero su desprecio marca su caída; el tercero es Spectre, la criatura más poderosa de la Tierra, del cielo y del infierno, pero ni siquiera su divina sed de venganza es suficiente. Finalmente, la Cosa del Pantano sorprende a la oscuridad primordial con su calma, sus raíces en la naturaleza, y aunque no puede dañar a su enemigo tampoco recibe ningún daño. Sus conclusiones, no obstante, merecen ser resaltadas: “la negra tierra... es rica en obscena descomposición... sin embargo, la gloriosa vida... brota de ella […] tal vez la maldad... es el humus formado por la descomposición de la virtud... y tal vez... tal vez es en ese musgo siniestro... en el que la virtud crece con más fuerza”.

Mientras tanto, en la Tierra, la sesión de espiritismo continúa. John Constantine intenta canalizar todas las energías místicas a su disposición para ayudar a la Cosa del Pantano y a sus aliados. Pero se enfrentan a fuerzas más allá de la comprensión humana y el resultado es trágico: Sargon el hechicero se quema vivo, y luego Zatara sufre la misma agonía. Finalmente, la mente de Steve Dayton colapsa. Constantine y los sobrevivientes restantes entienden el alto costo de la victoria.

Como observa Neil Gaiman en el prólogo “la consumación de la saga ‘American Gothic’ tenía el doble de ancho de un cómic normal, y aun así pudo ser más grande. El Armagedón llega y se va en cuarenta páginas, dejando un rastro de muertos e individuos destrozados y una filosofía que prácticamente toda religión calificaría de herética –o por lo menos incómoda. También marcó el fin del equipo artístico de Bissette y Totleben”. 

De hecho, este es el último número ilustrado por los maravillosamente talentosos Stephen Bissette y John Totleben. Su despedida es profundamente evocativa, un hermoso retrato del apocalipsis, del fin de todas las cosas, y logran crear la maldad definitiva, algo tan poderoso que puede incluso espantar a los demonios del infierno. Bissette, Veitch y Totleben le otorgan a Doctor Fate, Spectre y los demás un sentido de dignidad pero también de desesperación. La “combustión espontánea” de Sargon y Zatara es brutal, y ellos aplican las texturas más delicadas del pincel para mostrarnos lo impactante que es ver la carne humana quemándose.

If there is a will, there is a way. I wish I could believe that. However, I can’t. Not right now. I’ve been feeling awful about this, but I am ready to give up. It has been over a month and I have achieved nothing. I started with a couple of job prospects and after so many days the number hasn’t increased at all. And, like in a bankruptcy chart, the numbers are climbing down. I don’t know what bothers me the most: the fact that I won’t get a new job before October or my own resignation. This is so typical. I guess this is just another example of how I never get what I want. Or am I being too pessimistic? 

I know how frustrating can it be when things don’t work out the way you want to. "If you don’t get this job you will get another one", people say. But what are you supposed to do in the meantime? 

I talked to a friend the other day. He's doing even worse than I am (hard to believe, innit?). Somehow I cheered him up. I haven't even the faintest idea of how I did it. And it made me wonder...

...Can I give to others something that I do not have? Fortunately I can. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother to write fiction. How is it possible to strengthen in others the hope that would only dwindle inside me? And how can my words be good for them but useless to myself? Extraordinary power, miracle, noble effort to hand over the very thing that I lack the most. It is, as Bernanos would say, the mysterious gift of the empty hands.

Como en los últimos años he viajado poco, a veces me preocupa estar desconectado de la movida artística latinoamericana. Por suerte, la Galería Enlace siempre se encarga de invitar a artistas de diversos países. Roberto Ascóniga, director de la conocida galería sanisidrina, siempre elige a los más talentosos. Y eso es algo evidente si repasamos el catálogo de los últimos tres años.

Anteayer si inauguró “La gran kermesse”, muestra individual del argentino Sergio Camporeale. Sin duda, un maestro del pincel y del color, Camporeale nos deleita con imágenes bien definidas, apresadas a veces por una bruma de ensueño que nos remite al poder de la mitología, clásica y postmoderna, y por eso es posible que en sus cuadros convivan un minotauro y un Batman, un hoplita desnudo y un Spider-Man.

El enfoque sobrio, los colores mates y el trazo preciso del artista septuagenario aportan a cada uno de sus cuadros un poder mágico y evocador que pocos logran. La experiencia de toda una vida dedicada a la pintura se plasma en “La gran kermesse”. 

Teniendo en cuenta la inclinación netamente comiquera del blog, los dejo con dos cuadros en los que podemos encontrar a Batman y a Spider-Man.

Young Avengers # 8 - Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie

If you remember the things you did as a teenager, you’ll surely remember the need to go out. It didn’t matter where or for how long. Outside was good; inside the house –with mommy and daddy– not so much. Obviously, the Young Avengers share that need too. But they take it to the extreme by traveling through parallel dimensions and alternate realities!

And the journey sure takes a toll on them. Watching a destroyed Earth, turned into the capital of the Kree Empire is terrifying. Observing the dry skeletons of Thor, Loki and the rest of the Nordic pantheon can be depressing. And reaching to one post-apocalyptic future after another is equally discouraging. “We’ve seen astounding sights that catch my breath and will haunt me for life”, says Kate Bishop. 

Just like in the previous issue, Kieron Gillen manages to tell not one but many stories in only 22 pages. He juggles multiple plots and subplots and he provides the necessary intensity to specific moments that stay with us long after we’re finished reading. We know that all of these multiple Earths exist only as fiction inside the already fictional universe of Marvel Comics, but we get to see them and understand what they are about. And that is more than enough to electrify us. That’s good writing.

Of course, the Young Avengers must keep on searching for Speed. And thus they arrive to another Earth subjugated by the Kree’s Supreme Intelligence, conquered by Noh Varr. Certainly, Marvel Boy hasn’t been idle in these alternate realities. There they find Oubliette, the Exterminatrix, a crazy Grant Morrison’s creation that appeared on the original Marvel Boy miniseries. Here, the leather costume, reminiscent to certain bondage and sadomasochist practices hides something very dangerous, and that’s revealed when Exerminatrix removes her mask.

After the battle with Exerminatrix, the Young Avengers are separated. Hulkling (Teddy Altman) and Prodigy (David Alleyne) land on a place that defies all physical laws, a white zone that coincidentally allows Jamie McKelvie to explore visual composition, the boundaries of the panel and the two-dimensional reality of a comic book page in the most imaginative way I’ve seen in a long time. 

McKelvie’s creativity is also made evident in the credits page. “Earth-616” takes the form of Loki’s impossible passport. And it has the most funny visa stamps on it, from “I survived Earth Z” (a clever World War Z reference), to the exclusive Earth 54 Club (a homage to the famous 54 disco), and many more hilarious entries and departures. The British artist captures the essence of the god of mischief, by showing us Loki’s naughty expression. In these pages, McKelvie is free to be willful, untrammelled by rule or precedent.

But I digress. Teddy and David are trapped in this weird dimension while the rest of the Young Avengers are trying to rescue them. What can two boys do in a place defined by emptiness and timelessness? Wait. And so they wait to be rescued. And they talk. Because that’s what young boys do. They confide to their peers information or secrets that they would never share with their parents. 

Teddy Altman affirms that he has no regrets: he has lived a good life and his relationship with Billy brings joy to his heart. David Alleyne, on the contrary, does have regrets.

There are certain common traits that teens share. I started this review talking about the need, at that age, of getting away from parental figures. But there is more: confusion, insecurity, sexuality. And –luckily this time I do not digress– the young Prodigy, David Alleyne, is experiencing all of this. Sexual confusion, affective insecurity and (homo)sexuality (or, perhaps, bisexuality). Purely driven by hormones and teenaged horniness, David kisses Teddy. 

And that, my friends, is one of the best cliffhangers I’ve seen in 2013.

Using panels with imagination / usando las viñetas con imaginación

Si recuerdan las cosas que hacían de adolescentes, seguramente recordarán la necesidad de salir. No importaba dónde o por cuánto tiempo. Afuera se estaba bien; dentro de la casa -con mami y papi- no tanto. Obviamente, los Jóvenes Vengadores también comparten esa necesidad. ¡Pero la llevan al extremo al viajar a través de dimensiones paralelas y realidades alternativas!

Y el viaje sin duda los desgasta. Mirar una Tierra destruida, convertida en la capital del Imperio Kree es aterrador, observar los esqueletos resecos de Thor, Loki y el resto del panteón nórdico puede ser deprimente. Y llegar a un futuro post-apocalíptico tras otro es igualmente desalentador. "Hemos visto paisajes sobrecogedores que me dejan sin aliento y que me acosarán de por vida", dice Kate Bishop. 

Al igual que en números anteriores, Kieron Gillen se las arregla para contar no una sino muchas historian en tan sólo 22 páginas. Hace malabares con los argumentos principales y secundarios, y proporciona la intensidad necesaria a momentos específicos que se quedan con nosotros mucho después de terminada la lectura. Sabemos que todas estas Tierras múltiples existen sólo como ficción en un universo ya de por sí ficticio –el de los cómics de Marvel–, pero logramos verlos y entender de qué se tratan. Y eso es más que suficiente para electrificarnos. Eso sí que es escribir bien.

Desde luego, los Jóvenes Vengadores deben seguir buscando a Speed. Y es así como llegan a otra Tierra subyugada por la Inteligencia Suprema de los Kree, conquistada por Noh Varr. Ciertamente, Marvel Boy no ha sido ocioso en estas realidades alternativas. Allí encuentran a Oubliette, la Exterminatrix, una loca creación de Grant Morrison que apareció en la miniserie original de Marvel Boy. Aquí, el traje de cuero, que nos remite a ciertas prácticas sadomasoquistas y de dominación, esconde algo muy peligroso, que será revelado cuando Exterminatrix se saque la máscara.

Después de la batalla con Exterminatrix, los Jóvenes Vengadores son separados. Hulkling (Teddy Altman) y Prodigy (David Alleyne) aterrizan en un lugar que desafía las leyes de la física, una zona blanca que, da la casualidad, le permite a Jamie McKelvie explorar de la manera más imaginativa que he visto en mucho tiempo la composición visual, los límites de la viñeta y la realidad bi-dimensional de una página de cómic. 

La creatividad de McKelvie también es evidente en la página de los créditos. “Tierra-616” toma la forma del imposible pasaporte de Loki. Y tiene los sellos de visas más divertidos, desde "Yo sobreviví a la Tierra Z" (una astuta referencia a Guerra Mundial Z), hasta la exclusiva Tierra Club 54 (un homenaje a la famosa discoteca 54), y muchas más entradas y salidas hilarantes. El artista británico captura la esencia del dios de la travesura, al mostrarnos la pícara expresión de Loki. En estas páginas, McKelvie es libre en su determinación, sin las restricciones de reglas o precedentes.

Pero me estoy yendo por las ramas. Teddy y David están atrapados en esta rara dimensión mientras que los otros Jóvenes Vengadores intentan rescatarlos. ¿Qué pueden hacer dos chicos en un lugar definido por el vacío y la ausencia del tiempo? Esperar. Así que esperan a ser rescatados. Y hablan. Porque eso es lo que hacen los jóvenes. Confían a sus coetáneos la información o secretos que nunca compartirían con sus padres. 

Teddy Altman afirma que no se arrepiente de nada: ha tenido una buena vida y su relación con Billy ha traído alegría a su corazón. David Alleyne, por el contrario, sí tiene arrepentimientos. 

Hay algunos elementos comunes que los adolescentes comparten. Empecé esta reseña hablando sobre la necesidad, a esa edad, de alejarse de las figuras paternas. Pero hay más: confusión, inseguridad, sexualidad. Y –por suerte esta vez no me estoy yendo por las ramas– el joven Prodigy, David Alleyne, está experimentando todo esto. Confusión sexual, inseguridad afectiva y (homo)sexualidad (o, tal vez, bisexualidad). Impulsado enteramente por las hormonas y la excitación adolescente, David besa a Teddy. 

Y eso, amigos míos, es uno de los mejores "continuará" que he visto en el 2013.

The Wake # 1, 2 & 3 - Scott Snyder & Sean Murphy

We know the surface world, but the depths of the ocean remain unexplored. Who knows what dark creatures may be hidden down there? Marine biologist Lee Archer has devoted her career to investigate subaquatic life. And now she must travel to the Arctic Circle to conduct an important research. There she meets a group of scientists and scholars who have been recruited, just like her, by the Department of Homeland Security of the United States. What could possibly be considered a threat to national security? What’s all the secrecy about?

Perhaps we’ve all enjoyed reading about mysteries, arcane secrets and ancient legends. But what would happen if some of those myths were true? What would happen if a monstrous humanoid creature were found in the depths of the ocean? Lee Archer finds a subaquatic monstrosity, slightly similar to a mermaid, who has already mutilated a man.

Scott Snyder combines scientific facts about human and animal biology with our never-ending fascination towards unknown species. In only a handful of pages, Snyder creates suspense, and scratches the surface of fear aggressively. The message is clear: we’re not alone in this planet; we aren’t the only intelligent species on Earth. 

And intelligence means to find a solution to a problem. For instance, escaping from a trap. And so this aquatic creature breaks free. And releases a neurotoxin that befuddles people’s minds. Unlike other horror stories, this ‘monster’ is not only a destructive beast, it has more than enough brainpower to subdue the entire station. 

Lee Archer has a very vivid hallucination in which she thinks she’s seeing her son, but in reality she’s about to be attacked by the creature. She’s saved in the proverbial nick of time, but others are less fortunate. 

As most people can’t react in time to the neurotoxin and find themselves trapped in a dream that feels stronger than reality. And it is in those moments that the creature devours them.

I have submerged myself into the bottom of the sea with the protagonists of “The Wake”. There is something fascinating about exploring territories that no one has seen before. Although water covers most of the Earth’s surface, we’ve barely started exploring the oceanic chasms. With a captivating narrative, Snyder recovers the mystery of the sea.

Of course, “The Wake” wouldn’t have been as impressive without Sean Murphy. If I made a list of young and/or new artists and had to choose only one as the best that would be Sean. His incredible talent and his unrivaled visual energy help him transform every one of his comic book projects into a ‘must have’. 

I’ve been following Sean’s work since “Joe the Barbarian” and “Punk Rock Jesus”, and I always discover something new in his penciling and inking techniques. Fluid, rich and complex, Sean Murphy is the ideal illustrator of “The Wake”. He has created some truly fascinating designs, and his underwater monsters are more real and frightening than anything else on the stands. 

Matt Hollingsworth, one of the best colorists of the industry, adds a special chromatic texture to Sean’s lines, applying color in small blots, generating the illusion of watching something painted with a mixture of crayons and oleo. The solid tones and the lack of artificial separations or effects (quite common in today’s comic books) create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

La bióloga marina Lee Archer ha dedicado su carrera a investigar la vida subacuática. Y ahora debe viajar al Círculo Ártico para dirigir una importante investigación. Allí conoce a un grupo de científicos e intelectuales que han sido reclutados, al igual que ella, por el Departamento de Seguridad de los Estados Unidos. ¿Qué es lo que podría ser considerado como una amenaza a la seguridad nacional? ¿Por qué hay tantos secretos de por medio?

Tal vez todos hemos disfrutado leyendo sobre misterios, secretos arcanos y leyendas antiguas. Pero, ¿qué pasaría si algunos de estos mitos fueran verdad? ¿Qué sucedería si una monstruosa criatura humanoide fuese encontrada en las profundidades del océano? Lee Archer encuentra una monstruosidad subacuática, ligeramente similar a una sirena, que ya ha mutilado a un hombre.

Scott Snyder combina hechos científicos sobre la biología humana y animal con nuestra incesante fascinación hacia las especies desconocidas. En sólo un puñado de páginas, Snyder crea suspenso, y araña la superficie del miedo agresivamente. El mensaje es claro: no estamos solos en este planeta; no somos la única especie inteligente en la Tierra.

Y la inteligencia significa encontrar la solución de un problema. Por ejemplo, escapar de una trampa. Así que esta criatura acuática se libera. Y suelta una neurotoxina que confunde la mente de las personas. A diferencia de otras historias de terror, este ‘monstruo’ no sólo es una bestia destructiva, tiene suficiente cerebro para subyugar a toda la estación. 

Lee Archer tiene una alucinación muy vívida en la que cree ver a su hijo, pero en realidad está a punto de ser atacada por la criatura. Se salva con las justas, pero otros no son tan afortunados. 

La mayoría de las personas no puede reaccionar a tiempo a la neurotoxina y son atrapados en un sueño que parece más fuerte que la realidad. Y es en estos momentos en los que la criatura los devora.

Me he sumergido en lo más hondo del mar con los protagonistas de “The Wake”. Hay algo fascinante sobre la exploración de territorios que nadie ha visto antes. Aunque el agua cubra la mayor parte de la superficie terrestre, apenas hemos empezado a explorar los abismos oceánicos. Con una narrativa cautivadora, Snyder recupera el misterio del mar.

Por supuesto, “The Wake” no sería tan impresionante sin Sean Murphy. Si hiciera una lista de artistas jóvenes y/o nuevos y tuviese que elegir al mejor, ese sería Sean. Su increíble talento y su incomparable energía visual lo ayudan a transformar todos sus proyectos de cómics en títulos de 'lectura obligatoria'.

He estado siguiendo el trabajo de Sean desde “Joe the Barbarian” y “Punk Rock Jesus”, y siempre descubro algo nuevo en sus lápices, en su técnica de entintado. Fluido, rico y complejo, Sean Murphy es el ilustrador ideal de “The Wake”. Ha creado algunos diseños verdaderamente fascinantes, y sus monstruos acuáticos son más reales y terroríficos que los de cualquier otro cómic. 

Matt Hollingsworth, uno de los mejores coloristas de la industria, añade una textura cromática especial a las líneas de Sean, aplicando color en pequeños grumos, generando la ilusión de ver algo pintado con una mezcla de crayolas y óleo. Los tonos sólidos y la ausencia de separaciones artificiales o efectos (bastante comunes en los cómics de hoy en día) crean una atmósfera única e inolvidable.

August Comic Books / Cómics de agosto

Mark my words my minions, for you must memorize this mind-blowing moment. Meet… the marvelous month! Marvel at the massive mountain of Marvel mags and many more miscellaneous monthlies! The more, the merrier, eh?

Certainly August was Marvel's month for me (as well as the month of alliterations). But jokes aside, I must say that I'm enjoying MARVEL NOW a lot more than DC's insipid and clumsy attempts at relaunching their line. FF has been such a pleasant reading experience, but # 10 is the last issue for me. Young Avengers and Kick-Ass continue to amaze me. The first issue of Sidekick was even better than I hoped it would be (probably the best book of the month). I’ve heard nothing but good comments on Walt Simonson’s Thor so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. Yeah, I know I said I would stop buying Uncanny Avengers when the new artist came on board, but those Cassaday covers are so great that I had to have them. Some friends told me to get Jason Aaron’s Thor, they said I would love it, and they were right! And Aaron’s Thanos Rising: good story and great art. I’ve been reading stories regarding the 9-11 tragedy, and I’ve felt deeply touched; sure, some stories are simplistic or too corny, but others are brilliant, others grab you by the throat and leave you breathless. I visited the Twin Towers in 2000, and seeing them destroyed one year later was a shock. Reading these stories, even after a decade, still makes me remember how I felt that morning on September 11, 2001.

Marcad mis palabras, mis secuaces, y memorizad este momento magistral. Mirad... ¡el maravilloso mes! ¡Maravillaos ante la magna montaña de Marvel y otros títulos mensuales! A mayor monto, más diversión, ¿eh?

Ciertamente, para mí agosto fue el mes de Marvel (así como el mes de las aliteraciones). Pero dejando las bromas a un lado, debo decir que estoy disfrutando  MARVEL NOW muchísimo más que el torpe e insípido relanzamiento de DC. "FF" ha sido una experiencia de lectura placentera, pero el # 10 es el último para mí. "Young Avengers" y "Kick-Ass" continúan asombrándome. El primer ejemplar de "Sidekick" fue incluso mejor de lo que esperaba (probablemente lo mejor del mes). He escuchado muchos buenos comentarios sobre el "Thor" de Walt Simonson así que estoy seguro que lo disfrutaré. Sí, ya sé que dije que no seguiría comprando "Uncanny Avengers" cuando cambiaron de artista, pero estas portadas de Cassaday son tan grandiosas que tenía que conseguirlas. Algunos amigos me dijeron que leyera el “Thor” de Jason Aaron, me dijeron que me gustaría ¡y tenían razón! Y “Thanos Rising” de Aaron: buena historia y muy buen arte. He estado leyendo historias sobre la tragedia del 11 de setiembre, y me he sentido profundamente conmovido; es cierto que algunas historias son simplonas o demasiado cursis, pero otras son brillantes, otras te agarran de la garganta y te dejan sin aliento. Visité las Torres Gemelas el 2000, y verlas destruidas un año después fue un shock. Leer estas historias, incluso después de una década, todavía me hace recordar cómo me sentí esa mañana del 11 de setiembre del 2001.
