August comics / cómics de agosto

I had fun reading the first issue of Love Everlasting, but I found Batman One Bad Day The Riddler quite disappointing (it’s hard to believe they were all written by the same guy). Batman Fortress and Mind MGMT Bootleg keep getting better and better. Geof Darrow’s art is absolutely impressive in Shaolin Cowboy Cruel to be Kin. As always, I’m really enjoying these old Avatar trade paperbacks. I particularly loved the anthology Tales of the Human Target but if I have to choose my favorite comic of the month it would be Amazing Fantasy # 1000 Starring Spider-Man, especially Neil Gaiman’s story in it. Me divertí leyendo el primer número de Love Everlasting, pero Batman One Bad Day The Riddler fue bastante decepcionante (es difícil creer que fueron escritos por el mismo tipo). Batman Fortress y Mind MGMT Bootleg siguen mejorando cada vez más. El arte de Geof Darrow es absolutamente impresionante en Shaolin Cowboy Cruel to be Kin. Como siempre, estoy disfrutando mucho de estos viejos tomos recopilatorios de Avatar. Particularmente me encantó la antología Tales of the Human Target pero si tengo que elegir mi cómic favorito del mes sería Amazing Fantasy #1000 Starring Spider-Man, especialmente la historia de Neil Gaiman. Almost two decades ago I think it would have been difficult to find a more fascinating and promising filmmaker than Darren Aronofsky. In fact, two of his films are in my top ten, an honor shared with no one else. 10 years ago I said that “Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain (2006) a fascinating tale of life and death, beginnings and endings. Can death by an act of construction? With some of the most beautiful images ever, Aronofsky proves why he is one of the best directors of the 21st century”, and after watching it again I’m convinced that not only this is his magnum opus but also one of the most aesthetically pleasing films in history, accompanied by the absolute exquisite music of master composer Clint Mansell. There are 3 stories that unfold in parallel. One is more grounded in reality, and it follows the trials and tribulations of Hugh Jackman (Logan), a doctor and scientist obsessed with finding a cure for cancer to save Rachel Weisz, her wife, who has terminal cancer, and Ellen Burstyn, a motherlike figure who seems to be the only that understands the pain of losing someone dear to us. The second one, is the beautiful story that the wife is writing about the queen of Spain in the 16th century and the valiant conquistador who has swore to go to America, the newly discovered continent, to retrieve the sap of the Tree of Life, expected to cure all illnesses while granting immortality, “will you deliver Spain from bondage?”, she says, and he promises to defend the queen against her mortal enemy, the inquisition. Of course, religion has been a significant part of our lives throughout the centuries, and nothing has shaped our perception of death more than that religious aspect. The third and last story is a mind-blowing journey through different dimensions as a man meditates, trying to transcend his physical limitations, while at the same time trying to save a tree of life that is now brittle and dry. All stories are connected. And every single one of them forces us to question the way we understand death and the way we find beauty in life. A remarkable masterpiece. 

With a completely different style, Requiem for a Dream (2000) by Darren Aronofsky is a shocking and brutal exploration of addictions. Perhaps we are all addicted to something, whether we admit it or not, and that’s the reason why this film resonates so strongly with us. Once again, Clint Mansell excels composing a haunting original score. And although at the beginning we might think that the only addict is Jared Leto (Mr. Nobody), a young man who steals from Ellen Burstyn, his mom, to buy drugs; but then his girlfriend, Jennifer Connelly, also gets addicted. And even the mom, an old and lonely woman who seems to have only two very harmless addictions: chocolates and bad TV shows, becomes addicted to opioid medications she starts taking to lose weight. Requiem for a Dream is like an open wound that makes us see the ugly side of society, the weaknesses within us, and the urge to fill the emotional void in our lives with whatever mind-altering substance, legal or illegal, that we can find. Extremely powerful, revolting at some points, brutal to a level never before seen in American productions, Requiem for a Dream is a contemporary classic that has withstood the test of time. Absolutely brilliant. 

And at last but not least, I finally saw the one that started it all, Pi (1998), Darren Aronofsky’s first experimental production in black and white. Clint Mansell is the composer but also plays a minor role here. And although the actors aren’t famous, the narrative strength of Pi very quickly captures our attention. The protagonist is a mathematician, a genius able to find patterns in numbers even while he sleeps. He seems to have developed an equation that can predict the rise and fall of the stock market, and suddenly everyone is chasing after him, from a Jewish cult to the richest firms of Wall Street, but this tormented man is also losing his grip on reality. At times horror, at times suspense, at times psychological thriller, and at times simply experimental, Pi is a magnificent opera prima that proves how talented Aronofsky was from the very beginning. 

And since I already talked about 2 of my all-time favorites, of course I must include The Sixth Sense (1999), the most awarded and critically acclaimed film by M. Night Shyamalan. Bruce Willis (Unbreakable) is a respected psychologist who has helped countless children during his career, but one night, in the middle of a celebration with his wife, one of his old patients breaks into his house, although many years have passed, eventually the protagonist recognizes the patient, but he reacts too late. In the next scene, we now that some time has passed since this incident, and we find that Bruce Willis is trying to help a very disturbed child, but he’s also having doubts about he effective he can be as a psychologist, especially now that he and his ex-wife are no longer talking to each other. There is a fascinating contrast between the absolute lack of communication between the adults, and the way communication must be deciphered between the protagonist and a 10-year old boy, magnificently played by Haley Joel Osment (Artificial Intelligence: AI). Eventually, the boy starts trusting in the disgraced psychologist and soon reveals his greatest secret: “I see dead people. Walking around like regular people. They don’t know they’re dead. They only see what they want to see”. Although the initial reaction of the protagonist is to think that the boy is suffering from paranoid delusions, he opens his mind to other possibilities. Shyamalan proves to be an absolute master of cinema, able to create characters that are as a psychologically complex as they are appealing. Relationships, goodbyes, regrets, second chances, life and death, all of this is at the core of The Sixth Sense, and I must say everything comes together in one of the most meaningful and powerful final sequences I’ve ever seen, which takes place between Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette (Nightmare Alley). Of course, the twist ending defined Shyamalan’s style and became a trademark of his early cinematographic career.

Hace casi dos décadas creo que hubiera sido difícil encontrar un cineasta más fascinante y prometedor que Darren Aronofsky. De hecho, dos de sus películas están en mi top 10 personal, un honor que nadie más comparte. Por supuesto, la religión ha sido una parte importante de nuestras vidas a lo largo de los siglos, y nada ha dado forma a nuestra percepción de la muerte más que ese aspecto religioso. La tercera y última historia es un viaje alucinante a través de diferentes dimensiones mientras un hombre medita, tratando de trascender sus limitaciones físicas, a la vez que intenta salvar un árbol de la vida que ahora está quebradizo y marchito. Todas las historias están conectadas. Y cada una de ellas nos obliga a cuestionarnos la forma en que entendemos la muerte y la forma en que encontramos la belleza en la vida. Una obra maestra notable.

Con un estilo completamente diferente, Requiem for a Dream (2000) de Darren Aronofsky es una impactante y brutal exploración de las adicciones. Quizás todos somos adictos a algo, lo admitamos o no, y esa es la razón por la cual esta película resuena tan fuertemente en nosotros. Una vez más, Clint Mansell sobresale componiendo una inquietante partitura original. Y por último, pero no menos importante, finalmente vi la que lo empezó todo, Pi (1998), la primera producción experimental en blanco y negro de Darren Aronofsky. Clint Mansell es el compositor pero también interpreta un papel menor aquí. Y aunque los actores no son famosos, la fuerza narrativa de Pi capta muy rápidamente nuestra atención. El protagonista es un matemático, un genio capaz de encontrar patrones en los números incluso mientras duerme. Parece haber desarrollado una ecuación que puede predecir el auge y la caída de la bolsa de valores, y de repente todos lo persiguen, desde un culto judío hasta las firmas más ricas de Wall Street, pero este hombre atormentado también está perdiendo la noción de realidad. A veces terror, a veces suspenso, a veces tormento psicológico y a veces simplemente experimental, Pi es una ópera prima magnífica que demuestra el talento de Aronofsky desde el principio.

Y como ya hablé de 2 de mis favoritos de todos los tiempos, por supuesto debo incluir The Sixth Sense (1999), la película más premiada y aclamada por la crítica de M. Night Shyamalan. Bruce Willis (Unbreakable) es un respetado psicólogo que ha ayudado a innumerables niños durante su carrera, pero una noche, en medio de una celebración con su esposa, uno de sus antiguos pacientes irrumpe en su casa, aunque han pasado muchos años, finalmente el protagonista reconoce al paciente, pero reacciona demasiado tarde. En la siguiente escena, sabemos que ha pasado tiempo desde este incidente, y encontramos que Bruce Willis está tratando de ayudar a un niño muy perturbado, pero también tiene dudas sobre lo efectivo que puede ser como psicólogo, especialmente ahora que él y su ex mujer ya no se hablan. Hay un contraste fascinante entre la falta absoluta de comunicación entre los adultos y la forma en que debe descifrarse la comunicación entre el protagonista y un niño de 10 años, magníficamente interpretado por Haley Joel Osment (Artificial Intelligence: AI). Relaciones, despedidas, arrepentimientos, segundas oportunidades, vida y muerte, todo esto está en el centro de The Sixth Sense, y debo decir que todo confluye en una de las secuencias finales más significativas y poderosas que he visto, que toma lugar entre Haley Joel Osment y Toni Collette (Nightmare Alley). Por supuesto, el final inesperado definió el estilo de Shyamalan y se convirtió en una marca registrada de su temprana carrera cinematográfica.

I celebrated my birthday with a great selection of comics: Batman Fortress was very good, as well as Shaolin Cowboy Cruel to be Kin all thanks to Geof Darrow’s amazing art. The beginning of the new Daredevil series is quite promising, and X-Cellent continues to be entertaining and fun. My favorite issue of the month was Mind MGMT Bootleg # 1! And now, without further ado, here are July comics, as per solicitations:

Superman # 5 & 6 - John Byrne

Back when I first started collecting comics, most of my collecting habits revolved around Superman, and more specifically John Byrne’s Superman. In those days, I had access to the Spanish edition by Ediciones Zinco and it was always such a joy to read the letter columns and see other people’s opinions about Superman and other DC superheroes. I remember that Miguel G Saavedra, the man responsible for answering letters in the most humoristic and clever way possible, captured everyone’s attention when he said, “this is it, this is the issue in which Superman has a super erotic dream”.

Could that be possible? I remember how surprised I was when I read that. And certainly, through the years, “The Mummy Strikes” (originally published in Superman # 5, May 1987) has probably become famous due to the opening sequence, in which we see a reference to Legends, the big DC crossover from 1987, and more precisely, the first encounter between Superman and Wonder Woman in a post Crisis on Infinite Earths continuity. In the dream, we get to see what might have happened after the Man of Steel and the Amazon defeat their enemies. Or rather what Superman’s subconscious mind whishes it would have happened. 

"Legends" (1987)

In a way that was both elegant and visually striking, Byrne shows us first the battle, the moment of violence, and then the silent tension, the moment of passion between two of the most powerful superheroes of the DC Universe. Not a single word is said during these pages, and none are needed, such is the masterful storytelling of a legendary creator like Byrne. Immediately after waking up, Superman is surprised by how intense this dream was, and of course he has to accept that he feels attracted to Wonder Woman, a subplot that Byrne will explore further in future issues. 

Against Darkseid's hounds / Contra los sabuesos de Darkseid

Shortly after all of this Superman travels to South America as Clark Kent to see Lois Lane. Both journalists are fascinated by the most amazing archeological discovery of the century: the ruins of a highly technological civilization buried deep into the jungle. Of course, this leitmotif is characteristic of Byrne, and has appeared in Fantastic Four (a Roman legionnaire who finds a spacecraft 2000 years ago), Danger Unlimited (the remains of a long gone past hide super advanced technology) among others. 

Superman & Wonder Woman

After an extraordinary first issue, I’ll have to say that the conclusion “The Last Five Hundred” (Superman # 6, June 1987)  has good moments but overall it isn’t as powerful or meaningful as the first chapter. Here we discover the origin of all this technology, and then Superman ends up fighting against the last 500 minds of this extinct civilization whose minds reanimate an indestructible robot. John Byrne writes and pencils both issues, while Karl Kesel inks them and Tom Ziuco colors them.

After the dream / Después del sueño

As a funny anecdote, I’ll say that in the cover of Superman # 6 we see Lois Lane temporarily possessed by one of those minds, giving commands to the robot. “Destroy Superman” she shouts, however, in Ediciones Zinco someone messed up the translation (thinking that Lois Lane should be rooting for Superman and obviously not for the robot) and so Lois Lane says “Superman destroy it” (the robot).

Cuando empecé a coleccionar cómics, la mayoría de mis hábitos de colección giraban en torno a Superman, y más específicamente al Superman de John Byrne. En esos días tenía acceso a la edición en español de Ediciones Zinco y siempre era un placer leer la sección de cartas y ver las opiniones de otras personas sobre Superman y otros superhéroes de DC. Recuerdo que Miguel G Saavedra, el maestro encargado de contestar las cartas de la manera más humorística y astuta posible, acaparaba la atención de todos cuando decía “este es el cómic en el que Superman tiene un sueño súper erótico”.

Archeological exploration / Exploración arqueológica

¿Podría ser eso posible? Recuerdo lo sorprendido que estaba cuando leí eso. Y ciertamente, a lo largo de los años, “La momia ataca” (publicado originalmente en Superman #5, mayo de 1987) probablemente se ha vuelto famoso debido a la secuencia de apertura, en la que vemos una referencia a Legends, el gran crossover de DC de 1987, y más precisamente, el primer encuentro entre Superman y Wonder Woman en una continuidad posterior a las Crisis en Tierras Infinitas. En el sueño, podemos ver lo que podría haber sucedido después de que el Hombre de Acero y la Amazona derrotaran a sus enemigos. O más bien lo que la mente inconsciente de Superman desearía que hubiese sucedido.

The mystery increases / El misterio aumenta

De una manera elegante y visualmente impactante, Byrne nos muestra primero la batalla, el momento de la violencia, y luego la tensión silenciosa, el momento de la pasión entre dos de los superhéroes más poderosos del Universo DC. No hay una sola palabra en estas páginas, y no se necesita ninguna, tal es la narración visual magistral de un creador legendario como Byrne. Inmediatamente después de despertar, Superman se sorprende de lo intenso que fue este sueño y, por supuesto, tiene que aceptar que se siente atraído por Wonder Woman, una trama secundaria que Byrne explorará más a fondo en números futuros.

Poco después de todo esto, Superman viaja a Sudamérica como Clark Kent para ver a Lois Lane. Ambos periodistas están fascinados por el descubrimiento arqueológico más sorprendente del siglo: las ruinas de una civilización altamente tecnológica enterrada en lo profundo de la selva. Por supuesto, este leitmotiv es característico de Byrne, y ha aparecido en Fantastic Four (un legionario romano que encuentra una nave espacial hace 2000 años), Danger Unlimited (los restos de un pasado lejano esconden tecnología súper avanzada) entre otros.

The secret revealed? / ¿El secreto revelado?

Después de un primer número extraordinario, debo decir que la conclusión “The Last Five Hundred” (Superman # 6, junio de 1987) tiene buenos momentos pero en general no es tan poderosa ni significativa como el primer capítulo. Aquí descubrimos el origen de toda esta tecnología, y luego Superman acaba luchando contra las últimas 500 mentes de esta civilización extinta cuyas mentes reaniman a un robot indestructible. John Byrne escribe y dibuja a lápiz ambos números, mientras que Karl Kesel los entinta y Tom Ziuco los colorea.

Superman versus Host

Como anécdota chistosa, diré que en la portada de Superman # 6 vemos a Lois Lane poseída temporalmente por una de esas mentes, dando órdenes al robot. “Destruye a Superman” grita, sin embargo, en Ediciones Zinco alguien confundió la traducción (pensando que Lois Lane debería estar apoyando a Superman y obviamente no al robot) y entonces Lois Lane dice “Destrúyelo Superman” (al robot).

July films / películas de julio

In July I had the chance to go see Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), directed by Taika Waititi. Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) returns to Earth as the god of thunder, after spending time in outer space with Chris Pratt and the Guardians of the Galaxy. This time Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, has chosen Natalie Portman (Thor: The Dark World) to be the new goddess of thunder just in time to join forces with Thor against Gorr, the god butcher, magnificently played by Christian Bale (American Psycho). I’ve always loved Waititi as a filmmaker and I always say that humor is very much welcome in superhero movies, however this time I think it was a bit too much, as this feels more like a full blown out comedy with a few superhero elements in it and the constant jokes can make it difficult to take anything seriously. Still, there are brilliantly funny moments like the one involving Zeus, played by Russell Crowe (Noah). 

Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die (2021) truly marks the end of an era as Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), plays agent 007 for the last time. Léa Seydoux reprises her role, and remembers her traumatic past, when Rami Malek murdered her mother, and now that he has come back and forces her to kill Christoph Waltz, the leader of Spectre, nothing can stop him now. I must say I really enjoyed how everything that happened in previous movies comes together in one spectacular showdown. I was surprised by how captivating this movie turned out to be, and how well balanced it is when combining high octane action scenes with character development and more introspective moments. Although someone had spoiled the ending for me, I must say I was still shocked to see what happens to James Bond at the end of the movie. The cast also includes Ana de Armas, Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall) and Ben Whishaw (Baby). I’m glad that I rewatched all previous movies in anticipation of this one. Totally worth it!

Kenneth Branagh writes and directs Belfast (2021), a heartbreaking and intensely emotional journey through the eyes of Jude Hill, a boy who lives with his brother Lewis McAskie, his mother Caitríona Balfe and his father Jamie Dornan. Everything changes in 1969, when the conflicts in Ireland begin, and to preserve the innocence of childhood the parents of the protagonist are having a hard time deciding if they should stay or move to England. Belfast is unique in the way it shows at the beginning a tight knit community that is suddenly strained and fragmented due to religious fanatism. There are scenes of absolute beauty and sequences full of violence and destruction, there are moments of love between the characters and moments of struggle. Like life itself, nothing comes easy for the young protagonist, and even if our personal history is different it's impossible not to feel identified with him. Belfast will make you laugh and cry, and will enlighten you with its sober and elegant black and white cinematography. The cast includes Dame Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal) and Ciarán Hinds. I highly recommend it, it’s in my top 5 for 2021.

Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) plays Mr. Rogers, America’s beloved TV presenter in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019). I think Tom Hanks’ performance is extraordinary, replicating the voice and mannerisms of Mr. Rogers. The main story revolves around Matthew Rhys, a journalist who is still suffering due to traumatic events in his past, and whose anger is triggered by the presence of his father Chris Cooper. Mr. Rogers tries to help this man, and soon, one of the biggest celebrities in the US befriends a journalist who starts to delve into his past while trying to face the difficulties of the present. All in all, I think this was an interesting proposal but the plot isn’t as appealing as it should be and the movie as a whole feels somewhat incomplete.

En julio tuve la oportunidad de ir a ver Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), dirigida por Taika Waititi. Siempre me ha gustado Waititi como cineasta y siempre digo que el humor es muy bienvenido en las películas de superhéroes, sin embargo, esta vez creo que fue demasiado, ya que esto se siente más como una comedia total con algunos elementos de superhéroes y las bromas constantes pueden hacer que sea difícil tomar nada en serio. Aunque alguien me había echado a perder el final, debo decir que todavía me sorprendió ver lo que le sucede a James Bond al final de la película. El elenco también incluye a Ana de Armas, Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall) y Ben Whishaw (Baby). Me alegro de haber vuelto a ver todas las películas anteriores antes de ver esta. ¡Vale la pena!

Considerándolo todo, creo que esta fue una propuesta interesante, pero la trama no es tan atractiva como debería ser y la película en su conjunto se siente un tanto incompleta.
