2017 Comic Books: Arion's Achievement Awards

Even as a busy grad student, I always find time to read comics. So every month, I’m always impatient to read something I haven’t read before or to re-read something that has been reprinted and that had been out of reach for a long time. One way or another, reading comics continues to be an important part of my life.

Like a treasure hunter, I always look for the best available titles. The selection process begins early. In fact, two months prior to the date I place my order, I’m already checking out solicitations and choosing what seems to be more promising. Then I read everything I buy and I keep in mind which titles have captivated me the most. Finally, I share my opinions with you at the end of the year, as I’m doing right now. So, without further ado, I invite you all to the seventh annual edition of the AAA (Arion's Achievement Awards).

There is power in words, there is power in sentences. Thanks to a writer’s imagination we can travel to different worlds and eras; good writing allows us to be anywhere we want. In my opinion the 2017 award for best writer should be shared by three extraordinary authors: Kurt Busiek, for his deeply touching and sophisticated “Astro City”; Peter Milligan for his irreverent “Kid Lobotomy”, a series that reminds us of the best Vertigo era; and Ales Kot for his innovative “Generation Gone”.

If comics can be a superior medium is because of the art. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the logic outcome of this precept is that an artist is more valuable than anyone else: only he knows how to turn a page into a powerful visual feast, complex and captivating. I must confess that my eyes were seduced by the lines and designs of three artists: Santiperez for his exceptional work in the pages of “Diablo House”, influenced by masters like Bernie Wrightson, his drawings are a joy to behold; Pablo Raimondi for all his fantastic pages in “Sacred Creatures”; and finally Raulo Caceres for his detailed and splendid pages in “Code Pru” (in Cinema Purgatorio).  

Covers are designed to grab the reader’s attention. They can be beautiful and seductive, or visceral and impressive or simply unconventional. Either way, with hundreds of comics published each month, a cover needs to shine. The most magnificent covers of 2017 were done by Frank Quitely (“Kid Lobotomy”), Glenn Fabry (“American Gods”) and Santiperez (“Diablo House”).

Editors don’t usually get as much credit as they deserve, but they are an essential part of the publishing process. This time the award goes to Molly Mahan, for contributing to Vertigo’s greatest ongoing series: “Astro City”.

I read so many comics each year that sometimes it can be difficult to keep track of them. Fortunately, some of them stay with me long after I’ve finished reading them. The best single issue I read in 2017 is Astro City # 48, for someone who loves dogs as much as I do, this was the saddest story I could think of, and also an example of why, after more than two decades, Busiek continues to be one of the best writers ever.

When I started reading American Gods, I knew where it came from. Now I really want to read the novel and watch the TV series. Many of Gaiman’s ideas that were explored in Sandman are present here. Because of that and many other reasons, it deserves to win as best ongoing title of 2017.

There were plenty of amazing miniseries such as “Diablo House”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Generation Gone” and “Sacred Creatures”. Nonetheless, the best limited series of 2017 is “Unworthy Thor”.

I always have high expectations whenever I read a new series. “Marvel-Two-In-One”, “Astonishing X-Men” and “The Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign” were all great. But there can be only one winner: I consider that “Batman: Creature of the Night” is the best new series of 2017; writer Kurt Busiek and artist John Paul Leon have created a fascinating universe, and they deserve a round of applause.

When Alpha Flight was originally released in the 80s it was a hit. Finally, Marvel decided to publish a new edition of John Byrne’s Canadian superheroes. Certainly, this is my favorite acquisition of 2017.

After evaluating several publishers, I’ve decided to reward IDW for all the superb titles they’ve been publishing lately (“Strange Fruit”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Diablo House”, etc.).

There are always many interesting sites devoted to the 9th art. In 2017 http://sequart.org/ proved why it is so “devoted to the study of popular culture and the promotion of comic books as a legitimate artform”.

Talent never dies. That’s why, in 2017, we remember three extraordinary men who dedicated their lives to produce the most amazing comics: Bernie Wrightson was the most talented artist of his generation, who influenced so many people and became such a beacon of excellence and a master of horror storytelling. I’ve been an admirer of his work since I started reading comics. He will be missed dearly. Legendary writer Len Wein, who co-created Swamp Thing along with Wrightson, also passed away; respected and admired by many, now he’s mostly remembered as the creator of characters like Wolverine. Finally, British author Leo Baxendale leaves behind a unique legacy: “According to the comic writer Alan Moore, who read his work in the Beano as a child, Baxendale was the reason British comics creators made waves in America during the 1980s”.

No importa lo ocupado que esté con la maestría, siempre encuentro tiempo para leer cómics. Así que cada mes, estoy siempre impaciente por leer algo que no he leído antes o por releer algo que ha sido reimpreso o que había sido difícil de encontrar por mucho tiempo. De un modo u otro, leer cómics continúa siendo una parte importante de mi vida.

Hay poder en las palabras, hay poder en las frases. Gracias a la imaginación de un escritor, podemos viajar a diferentes mundos y épocas; una buena escritura nos permite estar en cualquier lugar que deseemos. En mi opinión, el premio del 2017 al mejor escritor debería ser compartido por tres autores extraordinarios: Kurt Busiek, por su profundamente conmovedora y sofisticada “Astro City”; Peter Milligan por su irreverente “Kid Lobotomy”, una serie que nos recuerda la mejor época de Vertigo; y Ales Kot por su innovadora “Generation Gone”.

Si los cómics pueden ser un medio superior es por el arte. Dicen que una imagen vale más que mil palabras, y el resultado lógico de este precepto es que un artista es más valioso que cualquier otra persona: solo él sabe cómo convertir una página en un poderoso festín visual, complejo y cautivador. Debo confesar que mis ojos fueron seducidos por las líneas y los diseños de tres artistas: Santiperez por su excepcional trabajo en las páginas de “Diablo House”, influenciado por maestros como Bernie Wrightson, sus dibujos se disfrutan mucho; Pablo Raimondi por todas sus fantásticas páginas en “Sacred Creatures”; y finalmente Raulo Cáceres por sus detalladas y espléndidas páginas en “Code Pru” (en Cinema Purgatorio).

Las portadas están diseñadas para captar la atención del lector. Pueden ser hermosas y seductoras, viscerales e impresionantes o simplemente no convencionales. De cualquier manera, con cientos de cómics publicados cada mes, una portada debe destacar. Las portadas mejor logradas del 2017 fueron hechas por Frank Quitely (“Kid Lobotomy”), Glenn Fabry (“American Gods”) y Santiperez (“Diablo House”).

Los editores generalmente no obtienen el crédito que merecen, pero son una parte esencial del proceso de publicación. Esta vez, el premio recae en Molly Mahan, por su contribución a la principal serie de Vertigo: “Astro City”.

Leo tantos cómics cada año que a veces puede ser difícil hacer un seguimiento. Afortunadamente, algunos de ellos se quedan conmigo mucho después de que he terminado de leerlos. El mejor cómic que leí en el 2017 es Astro City # 48, para alguien que ama a los perros tanto como yo, esta fue la historia más triste que podría imaginar, y también un ejemplo de por qué, después de más de dos décadas, Busiek continúa siendo uno de los mejores escritores.

Cuando comencé a leer American Gods, sabía de dónde venía. Ahora realmente quiero leer la novela y ver la serie de televisión. Muchas de las ideas de Gaiman, que fueron exploradas en Sandman, están presentes aquí. Por eso y por muchas otras razones, merece ganar como mejor serie mensual del 2017.

Frank Quitely

Hubo muchas miniseries increíbles como “Diablo House”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Generation Gone” y “Sacred Creatures”. No obstante, la mejor serie limitada del 2017 es “Unworthy Thor”.

Siempre tengo grandes expectativas cada vez que leo un nuevo título. “Marvel-Two-In-One”, “Astonishing X-Men” y “The Shaolin Cowboy: Who'll Stop the Reign” fueron estupendos. Pero sólo puede haber un ganador: considero que “Batman: Creature of the Night” es la mejor nueva serie del 2017; el escritor Kurt Busiek y el artista John Paul Leon han creado un universo fascinante, y merecen una ronda de aplausos.

Cuando Alpha Flight fue lanzado originalmente en los 80s fue un éxito. Finalmente, Marvel decidió publicar una nueva edición de los superhéroes canadienses de John Byrne. Sin duda, esta es mi adquisición favorita del 2017.

Después de evaluar a varias editoriales, he decidido recompensar a IDW por todos los soberbios títulos que han publicado últimamente (“Strange Fruit”, “Kid Lobotomy”, “Diablo House”, etc.).

El talento nunca muere. Por eso, en el 2017, recordamos a tres hombres extraordinarios que dedicaron sus vidas a producir los cómics más sorprendentes: Bernie Wrightson fue el artista más talentoso de su generación, que influyó en muchísimas personas y se convirtió en un ícono de excelencia y un maestro del género de terror. He sido un admirador de su trabajo desde que comencé a leer comics. Lo extrañaremos mucho. El legendario escritor Len Wein, que co-creó Swamp Thing junto con Wrightson, también falleció; respetado y admirado por muchos, ahora es recordado como el creador de personajes como Wolverine. Finalmente, el autor británico Leo Baxendale deja un legado único: “Según el escritor de cómics Alan Moore, que leyó su trabajo en The Beano cuando era niño, Baxendale fue la razón por la cual los creadores de cómics británicos causaron tanto impacto en Estados Unidos durante la década de 1980”.

November Films / películas de noviembre

I’ve been so busy this semester that, again, I barely had time to go to the movies once. I saw Thor: Ragnarok (2017), directed by Taika Waititi. I had so much fun with this third installment in the Odinson’s trilogy, I especially enjoyed the way this Hollywood blockbuster combines a good sense of humor with some great sagas such as Planet Hulk (Hulk trapped in a gladiatorial world) or Unworthy Thor (a fall from grace for the God of Thunder). Thor: Ragnarok reminded me of all the things I love about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it had some great moments, such as Doctor Strange’s cameo, Odin’s final words, the Grandmaster’s first appearance, Hela’s cold demeanor and her ability to kill, and so on. Of course, the cast of this Marvel production is, once again, absolutely impressive: Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Anthony Hopkins and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange).

He estado tan ocupado este semestre que, nuevamente, apenas tuve tiempo de ir al cine una vez. Vi Thor: Ragnarok (2017), dirigida por Taika Waititi. Me divertí mucho con esta tercera entrega de la trilogía del hijo de Odín, disfruté especialmente la forma en que este éxito de taquilla de Hollywood combina un buen sentido del humor con algunas grandes sagas como Planet Hulk (Hulk atrapado en un mundo de gladiadores) o Unworthy Thor (un Dios del Trueno caído en desgracia). Thor: Ragnarok me recordó todas las cosas que me encantan del Universo Cinematico de Marvel, y hubo algunos momentos geniales, como el cameo del Doctor Strange, las últimas palabras de Odín, la primera aparición de Grandmaster, el comportamiento frío de Hela y su habilidad para matar, y así sucesivamente. Por supuesto, el elenco de esta producción de Marvel es, una vez más, absolutamente impresionante: Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Anthony Hopkins y Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange).

Thor: Godstorm - Kurt Busiek & Steve Rude

For many Thor is only the god of thunder and lightening, but for those who have a special interest in Norse mythology, Thor is also the god of storms, the embodiment of strength and the protector of humankind, a role that was highlighted by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby when they decided to turn the mythical god into one of the most powerful heroes of the Marvel Universe.

In “Godstorm” (originally published in 3 chapters, from November to December 2001, and January 2002), Kurt Busiek wonders what would happen if the storms simply decided to disobey Thor’s divine commands, and what would this entail for Thor over the span of several centuries. “I was looking to do something that would deal with Thor as god, Thor as myth, within the context of Thor as Marvel character [...] I was a nut for Norse mythology long before I was a comics reader, and I wanted to get some of that feel into things”, affirms Busiek.

Steve Rude was chosen as the artist for this project because he was able to channel the artistic sensibility of the 60s, the dynamic strength of Kirby while, at the same time, combining all the elements in Thor’s early narrative into a single, cohesive whole. We have a unique duality in Thor: he is a god and he is a man, he is loyal to Asgard or Midgard depending on the situation. Thor is an independent hero but he’s also a part of a family of gods, there is an unending rivalry with Loki and we also have the romantic aspect from the early 60s run (the relationship between Thor’s alter ego, Dr. Donald Blake and nurse Jane Foster) as envisioned by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. 

In addition to paying homage to the Lee-Kirby era, it is not surprising that this story has a combination of ancient and modern elements. The Avengers show up but there is also a history background, a world of swords and the presence of Vikings, centuries ago. Today or yesterday, it doesn't really matter, what matters the most is that the divine intervention of Thor in the affairs of mortal men usually changes the course of history. 

In this context we can see how much and how often the God of Thunder has to balance his loyalty towards either Asgard or Midgard. Is he a man or a god? Is he more worried about an earthly apocalypse than an Asgardian Ragnarok? What is Thor in the end? I think Kurt Busiek tried to answer this question in Godstorm and that's why the story begins with two children who share an uncanny resemblance with Thor and his brother Loki, they both hear this story about a storm capable of defying his master. 

These two children represent Thor and Loki in their attitudes, in their behaviors and in the way they see the world: one of them seems to be brave, strong and respectful of traditions, while the other one prefers to spend his time playing, talking his way out of his duties and ultimately going against the usual way of life in this Viking village. The difference between the two brothers is evident; perhaps all brothers are different and so they should be in order to define themselves. That is one of the elements that also prevails in Thor’s early comics. Because Thor and Loki are always family. They are brothers and they can be completely different from each other at times, but they also share some common traits: perseverance whether in good or bad, endurance, cunning, intelligence, it doesn't matter if it is to solve problems or to create them. “I am no stranger to family discord”, affirms Thor. Indeed, these two brothers are part of an indelible equation, which can be mirrored in the dynamics of any other (mortal or immortal) family.

Thor's youthful days / los días juveniles de Thor

With care and inspiration, Busiek imbues in “Godstorm” his passion for mythology but also for comics. Throughout the centuries we see how Thor evolves, we see how he becomes Donald Blake and at some point even Eric Masterson. Steve Rude’s art is the perfect complement for Busiek’s script. And I must compliment him especially for his wonderfully painted covers, each one of them beautiful in its own way, the first one is harmonic and peaceful, almost idyllic, while the other two are ambitious and epic in their scope. I certainly recommend this miniseries to all Marvel Comics readers.

En este contexto, podemos ver cuánto y con qué frecuencia el Dios del Trueno debe equilibrar su lealtad hacia Asgard o Midgard. ¿Es un hombre o un dios? ¿Está más preocupado por un apocalipsis terrenal que un Ragnarok asgardiano? ¿Qué es Thor al final? Creo que Kurt Busiek intentó responder esta pregunta en Godstorm y es por eso que la historia comienza con dos niños que comparten un extraño parecido con Thor y su hermano Loki, ambos escuchan esta historia sobre una tormenta capaz de desafiar a su amo.

October films / películas de octubre

This month I only had time for one independent production, which is not the kind of movie I typically watch: Signature Move (2017), directed by Jennifer Reeder. This is a romantic comedy about 2 lesbians Fawzia Mirza (a Pakistani woman who feels forced to uphold family values and traditions, therefore remaining in the closet) and Sari Sanchez (a Mexican woman who embraces her lesbianism but has bad luck with love). I particularly enjoyed the way Reeder portrayed the particular idiosyncrasies of 2 cultures that are, in many ways, deeply conservative, and the friction this causes when they’re transplanted into to different society (in this case, the US). By the way, the protagonist of Signature Move was actually presenting the movie in the opening night of the Milwaukee LGBT Film Festival.

Este mes sólo tuve tiempo para una producción independiente, que no es el tipo de película que suelo ver: Signature Move (2017), dirigida por Jennifer Reeder. Es una comedia romántica sobre 2 lesbianas Fawzia Mirza (una mujer pakistaní que se siente obligada a mantener los valores familiares y la tradición, y que por lo tanto no asume su sexualidad) y Sari Sánchez (una mujer mexicana que acepta su lesbianismo pero que tiene mala suerte en el amor). Disfruté especialmente la forma en que Reeder describe las idiosincrasias particulares de 2 culturas que, en muchos sentidos, son profundamente conservadoras, y la fricción que esto causa cuando son trasplantadas a una sociedad diferente (en este caso, Estados Unidos). Por cierto, la protagonista de Signature Move estuvo presentando la película en la inauguración del Milwaukee LGBT Film Festival.

Planetary # 20 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

When Stan Lee created the Marvel Universe, many of his characters were born out of an accident involving cosmic rays, gamma bombs, radioactive spiders, etc. For instance, the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s premiere superhero family, gained superpowers after a space expedition in which they received a full blast of cosmic rays. While Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm y Johnny Storm decided to use their powers and resources to help mankind, in Planetary, the Four use those same abilities to oppress people and control the world. 

Randall Dowling (the equivalent of Mr. Fantastic), Kim Süskind (the equivalent of the Invisible Woman), William Leather (the equivalent of the Human Torch) and Jacob Greene (the equivalent of the Thing) have been Elijah Snow’s main antagonists for years. And they won’t allow that the alien structure from “Mystery in Space” falls in the hands of the Archaeologists of the Impossible. Therefore they send their most powerful member, Jacob Greene, to destroy Snow’s angels and take possession of this extraterrestrial vessel.

In “Rendezvous” (published in Planetary # 20, September 2004), Jacob Greene starts his violent expedition, annihilating all humanoids that get in his way. Although the Archaeologists of the Impossible would like to have more time to see more of the alien ecosystem, they also understand that Greene must be stopped at all costs. Just like he did in the previous issue, John Cassaday unleashes his imagination, turning every page into a fascinating landscape populated by the strangest creatures, such as the anthropoid fireflies that fly around gigantic nests.

Cassaday successfully creates a suspenseful atmosphere, generating more and more intrigue with every page, as the angels hunt down Jacob Greene. We see humanoids running away from the strongest member of the Four, and we only get to see glimpses of his body here and there, a hand, or feet. With his unlimited strength, this stony creature pulverizes the bone and flesh of every living creature around him.  

Snow's Angels / los ángeles de Snow

Nobody has seen Jacob Greene and survived to tell the tale, and yet, there are rumors about him. Unlike the other members of the Four, Greene is a monstrous anomaly. Perhaps that would be a more logical result if a human being is in touch with cosmic radiation. And the idea of mutations that affect and kill people had already been explored by Warren Ellis in “Ruins”, a fascinating dystopian satire in which all of the characters in the Marvel Universe suffer horrible mutations that ultimately lead them to a gruesome death. In “Ruins”, the gamma bomb turns Bruce Banner into a putrefied monster that has nothing to do with the Hulk, the X-Men are disfigured and mutilated creatures, and the Fantastic Four suffer horrible deaths: Johnny Storm burns from the bones outwards, Reed Richards bones protrude and rip apart his skin, and so on. 

Humanoids in danger! / humanoides en peligro

Following the same logic, Jacob Greene is not the charming hero made of orange rocks that we’ve seen in Fantastic Four. He is a terrifying monster with tumors all over his body. In a shocking splash page, Cassaday reveals how the creature looks, in just one image, the artists conveys all the rage and violence of a character that, for all intents and purposes, should resemble one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. 

Almost a decade after writing “Ruins”, Ellis plays again with the idea of paying the ultimate price for having superpowers. In this case, Jacob Greene is a monster that can barely speak like a human being, but Elijah Snow has given his angels enough information to get rid of him forever.

Por lo tanto, envían a su miembro más poderoso, Jacob Greene, para destruir a los ángeles de Snow y tomar posesión de este bajel extraterrestre.

En "Encuentro" (publicado en Planetary # 20, septiembre de 2004), Jacob Greene comienza su violenta expedición, aniquilando a todos los humanoides que se cruzan en su camino. Aunque a los arqueólogos de lo imposible les gustaría tener más tiempo para observar atentamente el ecosistema alienígena, también entienden que Greene debe ser detenido a toda costa. Tal como hizo en el número anterior, John Cassaday desata su imaginación, convirtiendo cada página en un paisaje fascinante poblado por las criaturas más extrañas, como las luciérnagas antropoides que vuelan alrededor de nidos gigantescos.

Cassaday crea con éxito una atmósfera de suspenso, generando más y más intriga en cada página, mientras los ángeles cazan a Jacob Greene. Vemos humanoides huyendo del integrante más fuerte de los Cuatro, y solo podemos ver detalles de su cuerpo aquí y allá, una mano o los pies. Con su fuerza ilimitada, esta criatura de piedra pulveriza el hueso y la carne de cada criatura viviente que lo rodea.

Jacob Greene

Nadie ha visto a Jacob Greene y ha sobrevivido para contarlo, y sin embargo, hay rumores sobre él. A diferencia de los otros miembros de los Cuatro, Greene es una anomalía monstruosa. Tal vez ese sería un resultado más lógico si un ser humano está en contacto con la radiación cósmica. Y la idea de las mutaciones que afectan y matan a las personas ya había sido explorada por Warren Ellis en “Ruins”, una fascinante sátira distópica en la que todos los personajes del Universo Marvel sufren mutaciones horribles que finalmente los llevan a una muerte espantosa. En "Ruins", la bomba gamma convierte a Bruce Banner en un monstruo putrefacto que no tiene nada que ver con Hulk, los X-Men son criaturas desfiguradas y mutiladas, y los Cuatro Fantásticos sufren muertes horribles: Johnny Storm se quema de adentro hacia afuera, los huesos de Reed Richards sobresalen y desgarran su piel, y así sucesivamente.

Siguiendo la misma lógica, Jacob Greene no es el héroe encantador hecho de rocas anaranjadas que hemos visto en Fantastic Four. Él es un monstruo aterrador con tumores en todo su cuerpo. En una impactante página completa, Cassaday revela cómo se ve la criatura, en una sola imagen, el artista transmite toda la furia y violencia de un personaje que, a todos los efectos, debería parecerse a uno de los héroes más queridos de Marvel.

Casi una década después de escribir "Ruins", Ellis vuelve a jugar con la idea de pagar el precio máximo por tener superpoderes. En este caso, Jacob Greene es un monstruo que apenas puede hablar como un ser humano, pero Elijah Snow le ha dado suficiente información a sus ángeles para deshacerse de él para siempre.

September films / películas de septiembre

In September I had the chance to reconnect with the filmography of François Ozon, one of the most innovative and audacious contemporary French directors. Before producing such masterpieces as Dans la maison, he was already making very interesting short films.

X2000 (1998), for example, shows Ozon’s ability to create an ominous atmosphere. Bruno Slagmulder wakes up after a new year’s a party and wanders around a dilapidated loft, when he finds two teenagers sleeping together (Lionel Le Guevellou and Olivier Le Guevellou) he stares at them silently. Silence and abandonment are the leitmotifs of this strange story. 

In Une robe d'été (1996), Ozon subverts his own cinematographic universe (plagued by sexual ambiguity, explicit homosexuality and subtle violence). Sébastien Charles and Frédéric Mangenot, are two gay teenagers, enjoying the summer, but for some reason Sébastien seems unwilling to have sex with Frédéric. A fortuitous encounter with Lucia Sanchez will prove how sexuality sometimes can be more fluid and complex than one could think of. In this case, a heterosexual contact will increase Sébastien’s capacity for eroticism and exploration, and will reignite his passion towards his boyfriend.

En septiembre tuve la oportunidad de reconectarme con la filmografía de François Ozon, uno de los directores franceses contemporáneos más innovadores y audaces. Antes de producir obras maestras como Dans la maison, ya estaba haciendo cortometrajes muy interesantes.

X2000 (1998), por ejemplo, muestra la capacidad de Ozon para crear una atmósfera ominosa. Bruno Slagmulder se despierta después de una fiesta de año nuevo y deambula por un loft algo dilapidado, hasta encontrar a dos adolescentes que duermen juntos (Lionel Le Guevellou y Olivier Le Guevellou), él los observa fijamente, silenciosamente. El silencio y el abandono son los leitmotifs de esta extraña historia.

En Une robe d'été (1996), Ozon subvierte su propio universo cinematográfico (plagado de ambigüedad sexual, homosexualidad explícita y violencia sutil). Sébastien Charles y Frédéric Mangenot, son dos adolescentes gays, disfrutando del verano, pero por alguna razón Sébastien no parece dispuesto a tener sexo con Frédéric. Un encuentro fortuito con Lucia Sánchez demostrará cómo la sexualidad a veces puede ser más fluida y compleja de lo que se podría pensar. En este caso, un contacto heterosexual aumentará la capacidad de Sébastien para el erotismo y la exploración, y volverá a encender su pasión hacia su novio.
