November Comics / cómics de noviembre

I read quite a few good comics in November. The new arc of Eternals is shaping up to be great. The first issues of Laura, The Human Target and What’s the Furthest Place From Here were very promising! I continue to enjoy Batman Reptile and The Blue Flame, and I particularly loved the reedition of Batman Noel. However, my favorite comic of the month was, again, The Nice House on the Lake, in this 6th issue, James Tynion IV creates a fascinating conclusion for the first arc of the series. And now without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

BATMAN NOEL HC

(W/A/CA) Lee Bermejo. Inspired by Charles Dickens’s immortal classic A Christmas Carol, Batman: Noel takes the Dark Knight on a journey into his own past, present, and future as he battles villains from campy 1960s rivals to dark modern menaces. While Batman fights for his soul in a frozen Gotham landscape, his supporting cast take up recognizable roles analogous to Dickens’s original holiday tale. Written and drawn by comic book superstar Lee Bermejo (Batman: Damned), Batman: Noel offers a beautiful and unexpected retelling of a beloved classic.

BATMAN REPTILIAN #5

(W) Garth Ennis (A/CA) Liam Sharp. After following a trail of carnage, Batman has finally come face-to-face with the reptilian that's been menacing Gotham’s underworld. And this horrific creature only wants one thing: its mother. But who is its mother? Pick up this penultimate chapter to find out the impossible answer to that question!

BLUE FLAME #5

(W) Christopher Cantwell (A/CA) Adam Gorham. The Blue Flame presents his opening argument to the Tribunal Consensus, finally beginning to make his case for the salvation of humanity by leading a hyper-visual tour of its beautiful accomplishments. But at home in Milwaukee, Sam Brausam is still dealing with extensive PTSD and becomes volatile in the house. With a baby well on the way, his sister Dee demands he go to a tragedy support group and seek help or move out. As the defense makes its counter opening argument, Sam faces prying and morbid curiosity from his new group therapy peers, leading him to seek solace with Reed Gordon again-but she may be unwilling to offer any, given her own dark and tragic past.

LAURA #1

Leí bastantes buenos cómics en noviembre. El nuevo arco de Eternals empieza con muy buen pie. ¡Los primeros números de Laura, The Human Target y What’s the Farhest Place From Here fueron muy prometedores! Sigo disfrutando de Batman Reptile y The Blue Flame, y me encantó especialmente la reedición de Batman Noel. BATMAN NOEL HC

Common Grounds # 5 - Troy Hickman, Angel Medina & Dan Jurgens

Many of the stories in Common Grounds usually take place in this unique café in which heroes and villains can reunite and talk to each other peacefully while sharing a hot beverage or some pastries. However, in “Where Monsters Dine!” (June 2004), the setting is different. This time, a truck full of pastries from Common Grounds has arrived to a secluded location, in which the customers are rather peculiar: they are, after all, monsters.

But the idea of a monster can have several definitions and (re)interpretations over the course of the decades. Here the monster protagonists are Troy Hickman’s heartfelt homage to the classic 40s and 50s monsters that were so popular at the time: big, clumsy beasts with absurdly amusing names that almost seemed to be the creation of a child. Sure, these behemoths were popular over half a century ago, but what about now? We see them as what they truly are, misunderstood and marginalized creatures with good intentions but terrible social skills.

When Larry, the delivery guy from Common Grounds, talks to these creatures, he doesn’t see monsters. Because these are the most human monsters you’ll ever see, monsters that can cry and feel terrified as they learn about serial killers and other terrifying things in the newspaper. It’s quite touching to see the way these monsters are now inspired to redefine themselves. And one wishes them good luck even if their future is uncertain. Angel Medina’s magnificent pencils and Jon Holdredge’s inks help us see the monsters under a new light, as scary as they might have ben half a century ago, now we also see them as vulnerable and sensitive creatures. 

In “Lovelife” a young man is feeling depressed after the girl of his dreams breaks up with him. For a second, he even considers the possibility of suicide, and that’s when the Eternal Flame intervenes. Together, they go to Common Grounds to have coffee and a long conversation. The young man explains why life is so difficult for him now that his relationship is over. And I guess we can all relate to that, if we’ve ever been romantically involved with someone and things end, then of course we experience sadness and pain. For me, it’s been 14 months since my relationship ended and I feel like I’m still healing from that.

Angel Medina

Of course, the most interesting part here is the way the Eternal Flame sees things. For him love is that which resists the test of time. And as an immortal, this superhero has experienced love many times and has perfected his understanding of what love is or should be. There is a level of philosophical and metaphysical debate about love, which it isn’t something you usually find in a superhero comic. And yet here it all makes sense thanks to Hickman’s wonderful script. The great artwork by Dan Jurgens and Al Vey (and colors by Guy Major) helps flesh out an already captivating scrip. And of course, Rodolfo Migliari’s incendiary cover is absolutely stunning.

Muchas de las historias de Common Grounds suelen tener lugar en este café único en el que héroes y villanos pueden reunirse y hablar pacíficamente mientras comparten una bebida caliente o unos pastelillos. Sin embargo, en "Donde los monstruos cenan" (junio del 2004), el escenario es diferente. Esta vez, un camión lleno de pasteles de Common Grounds ha llegado a un lugar apartado, en el que los clientes son bastante peculiares: son, después de todo, monstruos.

Pero la idea de un monstruo puede tener varias definiciones y (re)interpretaciones a lo largo de las décadas. Aquí los monstruos de Troy Hickman son un tierno homenaje a los monstruos clásicos de los 40s y 50s que eran tan populares en ese momento: bestias grandes y torpes con nombres absurdamente divertidos que casi parecían ser la creación de un niño. Claro, estos gigantes fueron populares hace más de medio siglo, pero ¿qué pasa ahora? Los vemos como lo que realmente son, criaturas incomprendidas y marginadas con buenas intenciones pero terribles habilidades sociales.

Cuando Larry, el repartidor de Common Grounds, habla con estas criaturas, no ve  monstruos. Porque estos son los monstruos más humanos que jamás hayas visto, monstruos que pueden llorar y sentirse aterrorizados mientras aprenden sobre asesinos en serie y otras cosas aterradoras en el periódico. Es bastante conmovedor ver la forma en que estos monstruos se inspiran ahora para redefinirse a sí mismos. Y uno les desea buena suerte incluso si su futuro es incierto. Los magníficos lápices de Angel Medina y las tintas de Jon Holdredge nos ayudan a ver a los monstruos bajo una nueva luz, por más aterradores que pudieran haber sido hace medio siglo, ahora también los vemos como criaturas vulnerables y sensibles.

En "Amor de la vida", un joven se siente deprimido después de que la chica de sus sueños rompe con él. Por un segundo, incluso considera la posibilidad del suicidio, y es entonces cuando interviene la Llama Eterna. Juntos, van a Common Grounds para tomar un café y tener una larga conversación. El joven explica por qué la vida le resulta tan difícil ahora que su relación ha terminado. Y supongo que todos podemos identificarnos con eso, si alguna vez hemos tenido una relación sentimental con alguien y las cosas terminan, entonces, por supuesto, experimentamos tristeza y dolor. Para mí, han pasado 14 meses desde que terminó mi relación y siento que todavía me estoy recuperando.

Por supuesto, la parte más interesante aquí es la forma en que la Llama Eterna ve las cosas. Para él, el amor es lo que resiste la prueba del tiempo. Y como inmortal, este superhéroe ha experimentado el amor muchas veces y ha perfeccionado su comprensión de lo que es o debería ser el amor. November films / películas de noviembre

November was a busy month for me, especially due to my Kickstarter campaign (which was a success, yay!) but turns out I only saw two movies. The first one is The Guilty (2021), directed by Antoine Fuqua; this is an intense story centered on Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), a demoted police officer who is now a 911 operator. We get to experience the never-ending stress of a job that can literally mean the difference between life and death for those who are calling. Immersed in one emergency situation after another, soon the protagonist finds himself emotionally attached to a woman who has been abducted, and while he tries to do everything he can to save her there will be many unexpected outcomes. Gyllenhaal provides a very solid performance and conveys the stress, anxiety and emotional pain of a man that seems to have lost so many things in his life and yet is intent on saving the life of strangers. 

I love anthologies and I love horror anthologies even more, and that’s the reason why I enjoyed Trick ‘r Treat (2007), so much, Michael Dougherty writes and directs this collection of stories that connect tangentially to one another. We have Dylan Baker as a creepy high school principal who is ready to mutilate and kill a chubby boy looking for Halloween candies; then we have Anna Paquin and her attempts to lose her virginity while a sinister vampire follows her footsteps; Jean-Luc Bilodeau is a teenager who brings friends to an abandoned place, where an urban legend tells about the tragic death of a group of handicapped children; Brian Cox is a bitter old man with a terrible past that he wants to keep secret. All the stories are captivating, and I’m sure all horror fans will be delighted with this Trick ‘r Treat.

Noviembre fue un mes ajetreado para mí, especialmente debido a mi campaña de Kickstarter (¡que fue todo un éxito!), por eso sólo vi dos películas. La primera es The Guilty (2021), dirigida por Antoine Fuqua; esta es una historia intensa centrada en Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), un oficial de policía degradado que ahora es un operador del 911. Llegamos a experimentar el estrés interminable de un trabajo que literalmente puede significar la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte para aquellos que están llamando. Inmerso en una situación de emergencia tras otra, pronto el protagonista se encuentra enganchado emocionalmente a una mujer que ha sido secuestrada, y mientras intenta hacer todo lo posible para salvarla, habrá muchos desenlaces inesperados. Gyllenhaal ofrece una actuación muy sólida y transmite el estrés, la ansiedad y el dolor emocional de un hombre que parece haber perdido tantas cosas en su vida y, sin embargo, está decidido a salvar la vida de extraños.

Me encantan las antologías y me encantan las antologías de terror aún más, y esa es la razón por la que disfruté tanto de Trick 'r Treat (2007), Michael Dougherty escribe y dirige esta colección de historias que se conectan tangencialmente entre sí. Marvel # 4 - Ross, Abbinanti, Acuña, Barta et al

In previous issues of Marvel, the first and last page serve not only as a nice framing sequence but also as the one continuing story that unfolds from one chapter to the next, as opposed to all the other standalone adventures by different creative teams. Once again, Alex Ross and Steve Darnall shows us how Nightmare has been able to vanquish even the all-mighty Celestials.

The next step for Nightmare is attempting to subdue such powerful cosmic entities like the Living Tribunal. These pages have magnificent art by Alex Ross, who is also in charge of a striking cover that pays homage to the 90s by showcasing some of the most popular characters that became famous in that decade (Shatterstar, Deadpool, Cable, etc.).

In “Sons of Deviant Worlds”, Daniel Acuña writes and illustrates a curious tale that takes place in a postapocalyptic future. Here the Deviants (the rivals of the Eternals) have conquered Earth and enslaved humans. In this context, the appearance of Silver Surfer might be seen as a sign of hope or doom. In the classic introduction of Galactus, the Fantastic Four are responsible for humanizing Silver Surfer who becomes an ally and eventually helps mankind. But in this alternative future we can expect Silver Surfer to fulfill his role as the herald of Galactus and thus bring about the destruction of the entire planet. 

Daniel Acuña

“Where Monsters Smell” by Hillary Barta and Doug Rice is a hilarious take on the old monster comics that Marvel used to publish before entering into the business of superheroes. In that aspect, this story is completely faithful to the spirit of the original Marvel Comics anthology from the 40s, the same one that inspired this anniversary celebration. I laughed out loud at the interactions between these monsters, but also the clever jokes in reference to the Comics Code Authority. As a curiosity, even Groot is here (but the original version from the 50s who was very different from the Groot that joins the ranks of the Guardians of the Galaxy decades later).

Finally, my favorite story is “I Am a Revoltin’ Development”, written by Alex Ross and penciled, inked and colored by Sal Abbinanti, a artist I wasn’t familiar with but whose rather experimental approach brings a unique narrative strength to an already fascinating script. Here Ben Grimm shares a story about his past, his fears and challenges as a kid. 

I particularly enjoyed the way past and present are intermingled, and so when Ben Grimm talks about school fights what we see is his present, as the Thing. Introspective and moving in its own right, the revolting development turns out to be a blessing in disguise. But of course, with a character like the Thing, there will be constant questions about the normal life left behind.

En números anteriores de Marvel, la primera y la última página sirven no sólo como una buena secuencia de encuadre, sino también como la historia continuada que se desarrolla de un capítulo al siguiente, a diferencia de todas las demás aventuras independientes de diferentes equipos creativos. Una vez más, Alex Ross y Steve Darnall nos muestran cómo Nightmare ha podido vencer incluso a los todopoderosos Celestiales.

El siguiente paso de Nightmare es intentar someter a entidades cósmicas tan poderosas como el Tribunal Viviente. Estas páginas cuentan con el magnífico arte de Alex Ross, quien también está a cargo de una llamativa portada que rinde homenaje a los 90s, al mostrar algunos de los personajes más populares que se hicieron famosos en esa década (Shatterstar, Deadpool, Cable, etc.).

En “Hijos de los mundos desviados”, Daniel Acuña escribe e ilustra un relato curioso que se desarrolla en un futuro postapocalíptico. Aquí los Deviants (los rivales de los Eternos) han conquistado la Tierra y esclavizado a los humanos. En este contexto, la aparición de Silver Surfer podría verse como un signo de esperanza o perdición. En la clásica introducción de Galactus, los Cuatro Fantásticos son los responsables de humanizar a Silver Surfer, quien se convierte en un aliado y eventualmente ayuda a la humanidad. Pero en este futuro alternativo podemos esperar que Silver Surfer cumpla su papel de heraldo de Galactus y así provoque la destrucción de todo el planeta.

Sal Abbinanti

“Donde los monstruos huelen” de Hillary Barta y Doug Rice es una divertida versión de los viejos cómics de monstruos que Marvel solía publicar antes de entrar en el negocio de los superhéroes. En ese aspecto, esta historia es completamente fiel al espíritu de la antología original de Marvel Comics de los 40s, la misma que inspiró esta celebración de aniversario. Me reí a carcajadas con las interacciones entre estos monstruos, pero también de los chistes ingeniosos en referencia a la Autoridad del Código de los Cómics. Como curiosidad, incluso Groot está aquí (pero la versión original de los 50s, que era muy diferente al Groot que se une a las filas de los Guardianes de la Galaxia décadas después).

Sal Abbinanti

Finalmente, mi historia favorita es "Soy un suceso repugnante", escrita por Alex Ross y dibujada a lápiz, entintada y coloreada por Sal Abbinanti, un artista con el que no estaba familiarizado pero cuyo enfoque bastante experimental aporta una fuerza narrativa única a un guión ya de por sí fascinante. Aquí Ben Grimm comparte una historia sobre su pasado, sus miedos y desafíos cuando era niño.

Alex Ross

Disfruté particularmente la forma en que el pasado y el presente se entremezclan, por lo que cuando Ben Grimm habla de las peleas escolares, lo que vemos es su presente, como la Cosa. Introspectivo y conmovedor por derecho propio, el desarrollo repugnante resulta ser una bendición disfrazada. Pero, por supuesto, con un personaje como la Cosa, habrá preguntas constantes sobre la vida normal que queda atrás.

Kickstarter Campaign - Support the Next Comic by Arcadio Bolaños!

After months of hard work, I finally decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign for my new comic book: Infectious! Although previous comics have been released directly through Comixology (with a very limited print run), I decided to create a campaign for this one. So far our friends at the amazing website Sequart (@Sequart) and Lucas Gattoni (@LetteringBear) have helped us spread the news about Infectious. So of course now it’s my turn to do the same. 

This is basically my take on superheroes fighting (or trying to fight) against Covid and Coronavirus restrictions, mainly inspired on the frustrations and relationship problems I had during the beginning of the pandemic. I'm very proud of the work, and this will also be my first full-length comic (instead of the usual anthology of short stories).

Después de meses de arduo trabajo, finalmente decidí lanzar una campaña de Kickstarter para mi nuevo cómic: ¡Infectious! Aunque los cómics anteriores salieron directamente a través de Comixology (con una tirada muy limitada), decidí crear una campaña para este. Hasta ahora, nuestros amigos del asombroso sitio web Sequart (@Sequart) y Lucas Gattoni (@LetteringBear) nos han ayudado a difundir las noticias sobre Infectious. Así que, por supuesto, ahora me toca a mí hacer lo mismo.

September Comics / Cómics de setiembre

A few days before celebrating Halloween with my new group of German friends I sat down and finished reading September comics (yes, I’m a bit behind). I got some really intense Avatar comics from previous years (Rover Red Charlie was the best of the bunch). Eternals Celestia and Batman: Reptilian were quite good. The Nice House on the Lake #5 is an extraordinary comic, however, my favorite this month is Strange Adventures #12, a fitting end to a great miniseries! And now without further ado here are October comics as per solicitations:

BATMAN REPTILIAN #4

(W) Garth Ennis (A/CA) Liam Sharp. The monster—revealed! Trailing behind the mysterious reptilian menace savaging Gotham, Batman hits the streets hard searching for answers but finds only more questions. Unos días antes de celebrar Halloween con mi nuevo grupo de amigos alemanes me senté y terminé de leer los cómics de setiembre (ya lo sé, me falta ponerme al día). Leí algunos cómics de Avatar realmente intensos de años anteriores (Rover Red Charlie fue el mejor del grupo). Eternals Celestia y Batman: Reptilian fueron bastante buenos. The Nice House on the Lake # 5 es un cómic extraordinario; sin embargo, mi favorito de este mes es Strange Adventures # 12, ¡un final apropiado para una gran miniserie! October films / películas de octubre

October was a fun month! I got the chance to go to Wisconsin again and I celebrated Halloween with friends here in Davis, California. Fortunately I also had time for a couple of new releases: Denis Villeneuve’s triumphant return to sci-fi is a love letter to the genre and to Frank Herbert’s novel: Dune (2021). Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) is extraordinary in his role as Paul Atreides, a young man with many hidden talents and the heir of a noble house. What seems to be at first a promising incursion into the deserts of the planet Arrakis, in search of the spice, the most precious substance in the universe, turns out to be a confrontation of epic dimensions between two noble houses, Atreides and Harknonnen. This intergalactic rivalry presents complex political issues, as well as many betrayals and secrets. I had read the novel many years ago, and I feel like only such a remarkable filmmaker like Villeneuve would’ve been able to capture the spirit of the book. It’s fascinating to observe the exploratory journey of the protagonist, his process of self-discovery, but it’s also heartbreaking to observe how house Atreides is ambushed and decimated. With nothing left, the protagonist and his mother venture into the desert, with the hope of finding allies. With an astonishing cinematography, a captivating script, beautiful music by Hans Zimmer, and an impressive all-star cast composed of Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad), Javier Bardem and Charlotte Rampling, Dune is definitely one of the best films of 2021.  

In Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho (2021) , the veteran actor plays the role of an old cowboy who is recruited to rescue his boss’s son Eduardo Minett, who is in Mexico. Crossing the border is easy, but finding the boy isn’t so easy. Neglected by his mother, this kid has found a way to survive in the streets by making money in cock fighting. The protagonist will soon become a fatherlike figure for this boy who has no role models in his life. But what is especially moving is the journey back to the US and the way the two characters interact with each other and with the people they meet in small Mexican towns. Although this isn’t Eastwood’s best movie, it’s still quite enjoyable.

¡Octubre fue un mes divertido! Tuve la oportunidad de ir a Wisconsin nuevamente y celebré Halloween con amigos aquí en Davis, California. Afortunadamente, también tuve tiempo para ver un par de estrenos: el regreso triunfal de Denis Villeneuve a la ciencia ficción es una carta de amor al género y a la novela de Frank Herbert: Dune (2021). Con una cinematografía asombrosa, un guión cautivador, una preciosa música de Hans Zimmer y un elenco de estrellas impresionante compuesto por Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad), Javier Bardem y Charlotte Rampling, Dune es definitivamente una de los las mejores películas del 2021.

En Cry Macho (2021) de Clint Eastwood, el veterano actor interpreta el papel de un viejo vaquero que es reclutado para rescatar al hijo de su jefe, Eduardo Minett, que se encuentra en México. Cruzar la frontera es fácil, pero encontrar al muchacho no es tan fácil. Descuidado por su madre, este niño ha encontrado una manera de sobrevivir en las calles ganando dinero en peleas de gallos. El protagonista pronto se convertirá en una figura paterna para este niño que no tiene modelos a seguir en su vida. Pero lo que es especialmente conmovedor es el viaje de regreso a los Estados Unidos y la forma en que los dos personajes interactúan entre sí y con la gente que conocen en los pequeños pueblos mexicanos. Aunque esta no es la mejor película de Eastwood, igual es bastante agradable.
