Faker - Mike Carey & Jock

A couple of years before the extraordinary The Unwritten, British author Mike Carey had already achieved an impressive reputation with his Lucifer series. The first issue of Faker was released in September 2007. Unlike most of Carey’s creations for Vertigo, Faker is a horror story deeply rooted in today’s world. It all begins in a college campus, in Minnesota, right at the beginning of the spring semester.

I actually bought the first issue of Faker in 2007, 9 years before I went to Wisconsin. I remember how fascinated I was when I read it, there was something unique about this group of young people struggling with existential doubts, academic pressure and the need to fit in. I moved to Milwaukee in 2016, and during my time in the Midwest, I experienced the real winter and the snow for the first time ever. But I also had the chance to experience life as a student in an American university. Now that I reread the miniseries I remembered why I found it so fascinating a decade ago and why I find it even more captivating and relevant today.

In the first issue we meet Jessica ‘Jesse’ Kidby, a college student who constantly manipulates and seduces men, in the opening sequence of Faker, Jesse successfully seduces professor Gelb, has sex with him, and immediately runs to the bathroom to collect the semen sample that she’ll use to blackmail the professor. It’s not the first time she’s done it, and she has become an expert. She chooses her targets carefully, married men, tenured faculty, people that risk losing everything in case of a scandal, people willing to pay a couple of thousand dollars to keep her quiet, as she says, “hey, I’m working my way through college, Same as everyone”. 

Then we have Marky, the only one in the group that has sex all the time. Marky explains that he started masturbating rather precociously as a child, and then he started chasing after older girls because “the yes ratio was higher. Then I discovered older guys, yes ratio was one hundred percent”. At times, Marky is mocked for being bisexual, by deep down, his friends envy him because he has a very active sexual life. Like Marky says “it’s all about getting some, whatever you want to call it, the relationship is just the delivery system. Sex is the payload. Everybody knows that. So why does nobody admit it?”.

Then there is Paul Saknussen, a good guy dealing with family issues and depression. Jesse, Marky and Paul go to “the Brautigan party. Sweat. Flesh. Booze. Pills and potions and powders for every color of the emotional rainbow. This is what higher education is all about”. After getting absolutely drunk and throwing up, they’re all awakened by Nick Philo. Nick is everyone’s best friend, they trust him, they always tell him their secrets, and they care for him more than for others. And Nick also cares for them, and in the second chapter prevents Paul from committing suicide.

However, Nick can’t register for classes because “his records have been erased from the college's computers”, his ID and driver’s license are lost, and except for his closest friends, nobody seems to remember him at all, it’s almost as if he had never been a student in Minnesota. Nick also goes to the store in which he used to work part time and nobody there remembers him, and there are no records of him ever being an employee there. And finally, when Nick tries to call his parents, the number he dials doesn’t exist. Nick is desperate, and he’s on the verge of collapsing, when he arrives home, his roommates Jesse, Marky and Paul suggest him to go to bed. Except there’s no bedroom for him, as if he had never lived there at all.

This is, of course, just the beginning of a miniseries that, thanks to its horror elements, is extremely powerful, like Carey stated: “I like horror a lot because it's a genre that allows you to look at human nature in extreme situations, which is always interesting”. The horror comes not only from Nick’s predicament but also from the horrible memories Jesse has been repressing for years, Paul’s trauma and Marky’s inner demons. In the words of Matthew McLean “When blackmail, lies, hallucinogenics, and a quickly disappearing identity get thrown into the mix, Faker starts to become a more unsettling and eerie tale”. This great miniseries was entirely illustrated by Jock, his unkempt lines and scruffy designs add a very gritty feel to Faker.

A diferencia de la mayoría de las creaciones de Carey para Vertigo, Faker es una historia de terror profundamente arraigada en el mundo de hoy. Todo comienza en un campus universitario, en Minnesota, justo al comienzo del semestre de primavera.

De hecho, compré el primer número de Faker en el 2007, 9 años antes de irme a Wisconsin. Recuerdo lo fascinado que estaba cuando lo leí, había algo único en este grupo de jóvenes que luchaban con sus dudas existenciales, la presión académica y la necesidad de encajar. Me mudé a Milwaukee en el 2016, y durante mi estadía en el Midwest experimenté el verdadero invierno y la nieve por primera vez. Pero también tuve la oportunidad de experimentar la vida como estudiante en una universidad estadounidense. Ahora que volví a leer la miniserie, recordé por qué la encontraba tan fascinante hace una década y por qué me parece aún más cautivadora y relevante hoy en día.

En el primer número nos encontramos con Jessica 'Jesse' Kidby, una estudiante universitaria que constantemente manipula y seduce a los hombres, en la secuencia inicial de Faker, Jesse seduce con éxito al profesor Gelb, tiene relaciones sexuales con él e inmediatamente corre al baño para recoger una muestra de semen que usará para chantajear al profesor. No es la primera vez que lo hace, y se ha convertido en una experta. Ella elige sus objetivos con cuidado, hombres casados, profesores de relieve, personas que corren el riesgo de perderlo todo en caso de un escándalo, personas que están dispuestas a pagar un par de miles de dólares para mantenerla callada, como ella dice, “hey, estoy trabajando igualito que cualquiera que trabaja y a la vez estudia en la universidad”.

Luego tenemos a Marky, el único en el grupo que tiene relaciones sexuales todo el tiempo. Marky explica que comenzó a masturbarse de manera bastante precoz cuando era niño, y luego comenzó a perseguir a las chicas mayores porque “la probabilidad de un 'sí' era más alta”. Luego descubrió a los chicos, y “la probabilidad de un 'sí' era 100%”. A veces, Marky es ridiculizado por ser bisexual, y en el fondo, sus amigos lo envidian porque tiene una vida sexual muy activa. Como dice Marky, “se trata de hacerlo, como se quiera llamar, la relación es sólo el sistema de entrega. El sexo es la meta final. Todos saben eso. Entonces, ¿por qué nadie lo admite?”.

Luego está Paul Saknussen, un buen tipo que debe lidiar con problemas familiares y con la depresión. Jesse, Marky y Paul van a “la fiesta de Brautigan. Sudor. Carne. Bebidas alcohólicas. Pastillas, pociones y polvos para cada color del arco iris emocional. De esto se trata la educación superior”. Después de emborracharse y vomitar, Nick Philo los despierta a todos. Nick es el mejor amigo de todos, ellos confían en él, siempre le cuentan sus secretos y lo aprecian más que a los demás. Y Nick también se preocupa por ellos, y en el segundo capítulo él evita que Paul se suicide.

Sin embargo, Nick no puede matricularse en los cursos porque “sus registros se han borrado de las computadoras de la universidad”, su identificación y su licencia de conducir se han perdido, y excepto por sus amigos más cercanos, nadie parece recordarlo, es casi como si nunca hubiese sido estudiante en Minnesota. Nick también va a la tienda en la que solía trabajar a tiempo parcial y nadie lo recuerda, y no hay registros de que él haya sido empleado allí. Y finalmente, cuando Nick intenta llamar a sus padres, el número que marca no existe. Nick está desesperado, y está a punto de colapsar, cuando llega a casa, sus compañeros de habitación Jesse, Marky y Paul le sugieren que se vaya a la cama. Excepto que no hay un dormitorio para él, como si nunca hubiese vivido allí.

Esto es, por supuesto, apenas el comienzo de una miniserie que, gracias a sus elementos de horror, es extremadamente poderosa, como dijo Carey: “Me gusta mucho el horror porque es un género que te permite ver la naturaleza humana en situaciones extremas, lo que siempre es interesante”. El horror proviene no sólo del predicamento de Nick, sino también de los horribles recuerdos que Jesse ha estado reprimiendo durante años, el trauma de Paul y los demonios internos de Marky. En las palabras de Matthew McLean, “Cuando el chantaje, las mentiras, los alucinógenos y una identidad que desaparece rápidamente se mezclan, Faker comienza a convertirse en un relato más perturbador e inquietante”. Esta magnífica miniserie fue completamente ilustrada por Jock, sus líneas descuidadas y diseños desprolijos añaden una sensación muy áspera a Faker.

June comics / cómics de junio

Only a handful of comics in June, but I’m sure that in a few days I’ll be celebrating my birthday (July 11) with more comics than last month! I enjoyed reading Fantastic Four, Invaders and Thor (and my letter was published!). Spider-Man: Life Story was outstanding. But, against all odds, my favorite comic of the month was Mark Waid’s Ignited #1. And now without further ado here are June comics as per solicitations.

June Films / películas de junio

In June I only saw two movies, but I’m sure I’ll have a chance to watch more in July. Let’s start with Dark Phoenix (2019), directed by Simon Kinberg. This is the end of the X-Men franchise and the last Fox production with mutants in it. It would’ve been nice to turn this into a proper goodbye but instead it turned out to be a disappointing movie. The Dark Phoenix Saga, by Claremont and Byrne, is one of the best and most revered stories ever published, and it deserved more than one movie; this felt like trying to shoehorn Game of Thrones in one season instead of 8. Dark Phoenix falls short and Kinberg seems unable to create interest in the heroes. It’s a shame, because the cast is amazing: James McAvoy (X-Men: Apocalypse), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class), Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jessica Chastain, among others. I’d say, though, that I enjoyed a few moments and most especially the final encounter between Professor X and Magneto, which is by far my favorite sequence. 

Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has always been controversial, and his latest film is as fascinating as it is disturbing, The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) is a reinterpretation of the classical Greek myth of Iphigenia, full of suspense and cringe-inducing scenes. Colin Farrell (Seven Psychopaths) is a successful surgeon married to a beautiful wife, Nicole Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut), they live in a spectacular house in the most exclusive neighborhood, they go to galas and enjoy a life of wealth and comfort. But there is no passion between them, and the protagonist seems to be constantly fighting to keep everything under control, he wants to forget that when he was 12 years old he would masturbate his father, and when he was an alcoholic he was also responsible for the death of some of his patients. The doctor spends time with Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk), a 16-year old orphaned teenager, giving him money and expensive gifts. Eventually, he introduces the boy to his family, and the orphan quickly befriends the couple’s children Raffey Cassidy and Sunny Suljic (Mid90s). But this isn’t an innocent boy but rather a depraved and manipulative teenager that causes the doctor’s children to become paralytics, as the sickness progresses, the protagonist is given an ultimatum, he must kill one of his children if he wants the rest of his family to survive. Lanthimos creates haunting, violent and visceral moments, while also proposing a unique atmosphere of tension and shocking secrets. The result is a challenging film that will not please most people but that it’s definitely thought-provoking. The ending, however, was a bit of a let down.

Este es el final de la franquicia de los X-Men y la última producción de Fox con mutantes. Hubiera sido ideal que fuese un adiós adecuado, pero en lugar de eso resultó ser una película decepcionante. The Dark Phoenix Saga, de Claremont y Byrne, es una de las mejores y más veneradas historias alguna vez publicadas, y merecía más de una película; esto es como intentar embutir a Game of Thrones en una temporada en lugar de 8. Dark Phoenix se queda corta y Kinberg parece incapaz de despertar interés en los héroes. Es una lástima, ya que el elenco es increíble: James McAvoy (X-Men: Apocalypse), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class), Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jessica Chastain, entre otros. Sin embargo, diría que disfruté de algunos momentos y muy especialmente el encuentro final entre el Profesor X y Magneto, que es, con mucho, mi secuencia favorita.

Pero no hay pasión entre ellos, y el protagonista parece estar luchando constantemente para mantener todo bajo control, él quiere olvidar que cuando tenía 12 años masturbaba a su padre, y cuando era alcohólico, también fue responsable de la muerte de algunos de sus pacientes. El doctor pasa tiempo con Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk), un adolescente huérfano de 16 años, a quien da dinero y regalos costosos. Finalmente, presenta al muchacho a su familia y el huérfano se hace amigo rápidamente de los hijos de la pareja, Raffey Cassidy y Sunny Suljic (Mid90s). Pero este no es un chaval inocente, sino un adolescente depravado y manipulador que hace que los hijos del médico se queden paralíticos. A medida que la enfermedad progresa, el protagonista recibe un ultimátum, debe matar a uno de sus hijos si quiere que el resto de su familia sobreviva. Lanthimos crea momentos inolvidables, violentos y viscerales, a la vez que propone una atmósfera única de tensión e impactantes secretos. El resultado es una película desafiante que no agradará a la mayoría de la gente pero que definitivamente es estimulante. El final, sin embargo, flaquea un poco.

This blog is now almost as old as BleedingCool...

This month Rich Johnston celebrated the 10th anniversary of BleedingCool, a webpage I used to visit daily years ago. In 2012 I bestowed upon BleedingCool the prestigious Arion’s Achievement Award for best comics related webpage. For years it was my favorite website, not only because of Rich’s articles but also because of the many contributions by legendary authors such as Warren Ellis, Dennis O’Neil and Garth Ennis among others.

Rich often “ran the kind of things that other places couldn’t, shouldn’t, wouldn’t run”, and I admired him because of that. Of course, in order to survive, and like many other comic pages did and continue to do, BleedingCool was forced to cover “films, TV, games, toys, collectables”, and nowadays comics are only a section in what used to be a site entirely devoted to the 9th art. In Johnston’s own words: “How long will Bleeding Cool continue? I’ve always had the pessimistic take that maybe there’s about a year left in the old beast. [...] I’m starting to think that maybe we might have eighteen months now…”.

Although I stopped visiting BleedingCool after I moved to Wisconsin, I still try to check it out once or twice a month, but it’s not like it used to be before, when I was an active member of the message board (years ago when they still had a message board) and I was on the site 3 or 4 times per day. 

Last year, unlike any other comic book website, BleedingCool run a story about Stan Lee that no one else seemed to pay attention to until it was too late. And I’m glad that after a decade, Rich Johnston continues to fight the good fight, and I want to talk about that story now. In November 2018, we all said goodbye to Stan ‘the Man’ Lee. Joan Lee, Stan’s wife, passed away in 2017, they had been married for 69 years and Lee loved her so much, and he always thanked her for giving him the courage to break the mold and write Fantastic Four, the foundation of the Marvel universe and a comic book that was very different from the classic superhero titles of the time. 

But what happened after Stan Lee became a widower? It is well known that “Keya Morgan, business manager of Lee and a memorabilia collector, had been isolating Lee from his trusted friends and associates following his wife's death, to obtain access to Lee's wealth”, but what I didn’t know is that Keya Morgan had been exploiting Stan Lee and taking advantage of the fact that Lee was legally blind (he wasn’t able to read documents before signing them, and that gave Morgan a lot of power).

In his last Comic Con appearances, Keya Morgan took full control of Stan Lee. People paid 140 or 150 dollars to get Stan Lee’s signature, and were forbidden to talk, ask questions or interact with Stan Lee. Many fans complained about the way Stan Lee was being treated, “shuffled around like a thing that makes money and not like a person”, “that man is a legend and you shuffled him around like he was a bag of money.” Many complained about it and expressed their concerns in social media “for God’s sake, let him have a break. You had him scheduled to greet fans practically every hour the con was open, to the point where it exhausted him”, and “I may gotten my signature but don’t treat this legend like a useless old man he deserves respect like anyone else”. Many expressed their concern about what it seemed to be elderly abuse, and some pointed out that Stan Lee only had a few “bathroom breaks and an occasional run for food”. During the photo sessions, Stan Lee was struggling to stay awake: “It broke my heart at the photo op. Literally the photographer kept yelling his name between each person and this agent or handler kept coming up to him to wake him up between each photo”. At some point, during the long signing sessions, Stan was so exhausted that he couldn’t keep going, and yet Morgan forced him to go on, even instructing him what to do step by step, saying things like “write S-T-A-N L-E-E”. Stan Lee was so exhausted he couldn’t even write his own name on a piece of paper. All fans agreed that Stan looked frail, weak and extremely tired, and yet Morgan forced him to stay there and forced him to work for endless hours. Fans that had seen Stan only a year before remembered him as a vital man, full of energy, defying the weight of his age, and suddenly, Stan had become an old man.

Stan Lee was still recovering from pneumonia when Keya Morgan forced him to work extremely long hours, barely providing liquid or food to a man that had brought so much joy to entire generations of comic book readers. “Morgan at one point also took Lee from his Hollywood Hills home to a Beverly Hills condominium ‘where Morgan had more control over Lee’”, and Morgan also prevented Stan Lee from contacting relatives, including his daughter. “Lee’s daughter said in a request for a restraining order last year that Morgan was manipulating the mentally declining Lee, preventing him from seeing family and friends, and trying to take control of his money and business affairs”. 

It has been reported that Keya Morgan stole many valuable collectible items from Stan Lee and sold them, then he took control of many of Stan Lee’s income sources, eventually “embezzling or misappropriating $5 million worth of Lee’s assets”. And not satisfied with that Morgan abused Lee and forced him to work as a slave when he should’ve been recuperating after dealing with pneumonia. All the signings Lee did when he was absolutely exhausted produced $262,000 in cash, and Keya Morgan stole all of it. Stan Lee created some of the world’s greatest superheroes, but in his final days, he had no heroes to protect him.

Este mes, Rich Johnston celebró el décimo aniversario de BleedingCool, una página web que solía visitar todos los días hace años; tanto así que en el 2012, le otorgué a BleedingCool el prestigioso Premio Arion’s Achievement Award a la mejor página sobre cómics. Durante años fue mi página web favorita, no solo por los artículos de Rich sino también por las muchas contribuciones de autores legendarios como Warren Ellis, Dennis O’Neil y Garth Ennis, entre otros.

Rich a menudo "publicaba el tipo de cosas que otros lugares no podían, no debían, o no se arriesgaban a publicar", y lo admiré por eso. Por supuesto, para sobrevivir, y al igual que muchas otras páginas de cómics, BleedingCool se vio obligada a cubrir “películas, TV, juegos, juguetes, coleccionables”, y hoy en día los cómics son sólo una sección de lo que solía ser un sitio enteramente dedicado al noveno arte. Tal como declara Johnston: "¿Cuánto tiempo continuará Bleeding Cool? Siempre he tenido la opinión pesimista de que quizás quede un año más en la vieja bestia. [...] Estoy empezando a pensar que quizás ahora tengamos dieciocho meses...".

Aunque dejé de visitar BleedingCool después de mudarme a Wisconsin, todavía trato de darle una ojeada un par de veces al mes, pero no es como solía ser antes, cuando era miembro activo del foro de mensajes (hace años, cuando todavía había un foro de mensajes) y cuando entraba al sitio 3 o 4 veces por día.

El año pasado, a diferencia de cualquier otro sitio web de cómics, BleedingCool publicó una historia sobre Stan Lee a la que nadie más parecía prestar atención hasta que fue demasiado tarde. Y me alegra que después de una década, Rich Johnston continúe dando batalla, y quiero hablar sobre esa historia ahora. En noviembre de 2018, todos nos despedimos de Stan ‘the Man’ Lee. Joan Lee, la esposa de Stan, falleció en 2017, ellos habían estado casados por 69 años y Lee la amaba muchísimo, y siempre le agradeció por darle el valor para romper el molde y escribir Fantastic Four, el cimiento del universo Marvel y un cómic que era muy diferente a los títulos de superhéroes clásicos de la época.

¿Pero qué pasó después de que Stan Lee enviudara? Es bien sabido que "Keya Morgan, gerente comercial de Lee y coleccionista, había estado aislando a Lee de sus amigos y socios de confianza después de la muerte de su esposa, para obtener acceso a la riqueza de Lee", pero lo que no sabíamos era que Keya Morgan había estado explotando a Stan Lee y aprovechando el hecho de que Lee era legalmente ciego (no podía leer documentos antes de firmarlos, y eso le dio a Morgan mucho poder).

The Eaters - Peter Milligan & Dean Ormston

Cannibalism and horror are usually parts of the same equation. And I would dare say there is a certain fascination towards cannibalism, and perhaps that explains the success of films like “Silence of the Lambs” and its prequels and sequels. I wonder if what fascinates us the most is not only the fact that Dr. Hannibal Lecter killed and ate people, but rather the sophisticated way he went about it. In the words of Hannibal Lecter himself: “our scars have the power to remind us that the past was real. We live in a primitive time, don't we, Will? Neither savage nor wise. Half measures are the curse of it, any rational society will either kill me or put me to some use”.

This idea of scars as evidence of the past is certainly present in Peter Milligan’s groundbreaking story, “The Eaters” (published as part of the Vertigo Voices initiative in 1995). The protagonist is Cassandra Quill, a teenager who has quite a few emotional scars. Every time she falls in love with a guy, eventually their family have him for dinner. They don’t have him over for dinner, they literally kill the guy, cook him and eat him, with a gourmet preparation that could compete with that of Hannibal Lecter.

Every time mister Quill meets one of his daughter’s boyfriends he immediately takes an interest in them; touching their muscles and admiring them, almost as if he were sexually attracted to them. But the true desire is much more powerful than mere sex, as it’s deeply tied to survival instincts and the need to prey on defenseless victims. The Quills have lived in the idyllic and small town of Churchill for the past 18 years, and over the course of the those years they have killed and devoured 2,324 of its citizens. They’re running out of people they can eat and that’s when they decide to start a road trip that will take them from the state of New York all the way to California.

Mr. Quill constantly remarks that they’re not killers, they only take lives when they’re hungry and only with the purpose of feeding. As they travel across America, they eat one hitchhiker after another, leaving no clues behind except a few bones here and there. And that’s how the psychopathic Hal Blind is able to track them down. Hal Blind is quite an interesting character, and in many ways, the opposite of the Quills; he’s the representative of the most popular brand of apple pie, the quintessential American dessert, therefore he also represents America’s obsession with sugar, sweets and candy in general. The Quills, of course, only eat natural things, and flat out refuse to even try products that contain sugar, preservatives or artificial flavors.

However, California isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Mr. Quill is appalled by the amount of homeless people he sees in Ohio, and that will be nothing compared to what they’ll see in Los Angeles. Even after 25 years, the homeless situation in Los Angeles continues to be a huge problem, and that’s something I saw with my own eyes when I visited the city a few months ago. “Well, it ain’t right. This is America. We’re the engine room and the grain house of the world… and people are begging and starving like we was some poverty-struck little statelet”, and for a time, Mr. Quill and their family try to make a difference, by killing obese tourists who are littering the streets, and turning them into hearty meals that are given for free to hundreds of hungry homeless people. 

Just before dinner / justo antes de la cena

During the journey, Cassandra will fall in love with another “big, muscular, academically challenged hunk”, and she’ll eventually turn him into a cannibal, since that’s the only way he can join the family. There are some delightful moments in this dark comedy, for example, the way Mr. Quill justifies their rather unusual diet, affirming that the puritans were all eaters: “the word puritan is a corruption of an old Aramaic word, meaning to feast on your servant’s flanks”, he also affirms that the early Christians were eaters: “What’s the eucharist if it isn’t the reenactment of a proper dinner? All that talk of flesh and blood… who are they kidding? Of course… with time, the truth becomes distorted”.

However, the Quills are not careful enough. And Hal Blind is able to intercept them. And the worst is that they make the mistake of visiting an old friend and ally, Shay Chesterton, who is currently the mayor in San Diego. Now a powerful politician, Chesterton doesn’t want anyone to discover his past as an eater. Attacked by a group of mercenaries sent by Chesterton, Cassandra’s father, mother, brother and boyfriend are all brutally exterminated and she barely manages to escape alive. In the final page we see Cassandra’s final transformation: she finally falls in love with a guy that is not muscular and who happens to be extremely smart. Together, they decide to become vegetarians. “The Eaters” is a fascinating standalone story, with haunting images and scenes that are just as fascinating as they are disturbing. The artist, Dean Ormston, perfectly captures the bitterness, the savagery, the blood and the violence, and above all, the ugliness of a United States of America that has very little to do with the idealized image that the Quills had in their minds after living in isolation for 18 years.

Me pregunto si lo que más nos fascina no es sólo el hecho de que el Dr. Hannibal Lecter mató y comió hombres, sino la forma sofisticada en que lo hizo. En palabras del propio Hannibal Lecter: “nuestras cicatrices tienen el poder de recordarnos que el pasado fue real. Vivimos en un tiempo primitivo, ¿no es así, Will? Ni salvaje ni sabio. Las medias tintas son su maldición, cualquier sociedad racional me mataría o me daría algún uso”.

"Don't eat with your fingers" / "No comas con los dedos"

Esta idea de cicatrices como evidencia del pasado está ciertamente presente en la innovadora historia de Peter Milligan, “The Eaters” (publicada como parte de la iniciativa Vertigo Voices en 1995). La protagonista es Cassandra Quill, una adolescente que tiene unas cuantas cicatrices emocionales. Cada vez que ella se enamora de un chico, al final su familia lo incluye en la cena. No lo invitan a cenar, literalmente lo matan, lo cocinan y se lo comen, con una preparación gourmet que podría hacerle competencia a la de Hannibal Lecter.

Cada vez que el señor Quill se encuentra con uno de los novios de su hija, inmediatamente se interesa en ellos, tocando sus músculos y admirándolos, casi como si se sintiera sexualmente atraído por ellos. Pero el verdadero deseo es mucho más poderoso que el mero sexo, ya que está profundamente ligado a los instintos de supervivencia y la necesidad de cazar presas indefensas. Los Quills han vivido en la idílica y pequeña ciudad de Churchill durante los últimos 18 años, y en el transcurso de ese tiempo han matado y devorado a 2,324 ciudadanos. Se están quedando sin gente que puedan comer y por ello deciden emprender un viaje por carretera que los llevará desde el estado de New York hasta California.

Hal Blind

El señor Quill comenta constantemente que no son asesinos, sólo quitan la vida cuando tienen hambre y sólo con el propósito de alimentarse. Mientras viajan a través de América, comen un autoestopista tras otro, sin dejar pistas, excepto unos pocos huesos aquí y allá. Y así es como el psicópata Hal Blind puede rastrearlos. Hal Blind es un personaje bastante interesante, y en muchos sentidos, lo opuesto a los Quills; es el representante de la marca de pastel de manzana más popular, el postre estadounidense por excelencia, por lo que también representa la obsesión de Estados Unidos con el azúcar, los dulces y las golosinas en general. Los Quills, por supuesto, sólo comen cosas naturales, y se niegan a probar productos que contengan azúcar, conservantes o sabores artificiales.

Sin embargo, California no es tan maravillosa como se cree. El Sr. Quill está horrorizado por la cantidad de personas sin hogar que ve en Ohio, y eso no será nada comparado con lo que verán en Los Ángeles. Somos el centro de la maquinaria y el granero del mundo... y la gente está mendigando y muriendo de hambre como si fuésemos un paisucho lleno de pobreza”, y durante un tiempo, el Sr. Quill y su familia intentan marcar la diferencia matando a los obesos turistas que ensucian las calles y convirtiéndolos en abundantes potajes que se entregan gratuitamente a cientos de personas sin hogar que padecen hambre.

The last supper / la última cena

Durante el viaje, Cassandra se enamorará de otro “muchachón grande, musculoso y académicamente incapacitado”, y eventualmente lo convertirá en un caníbal, ya que esa es la única manera en que puede unirse a la familia. Hay algunos momentos memorables en esta comedia negra, por ejemplo, la forma en que el señor Quill justifica su dieta bastante inusual, afirmando que los puritanos eran todos devoradores como él: “la palabra puritano es una corrupción de una antigua palabra aramea, que significa hacer un banquete con los ijares de los sirvientes”, también afirma que los primeros cristianos eran devoradores: “¿Qué es la eucaristía si no la recreación de una cena de verdad? Toda esa cháchara sobre la carne y la sangre... ¿a quién creen que están engañando? Por supuesto… con el tiempo, la verdad se distorsiona”.

Sin embargo, los Quills no son lo suficientemente cuidadosos. Y Hal Blind es capaz de interceptarlos. Y lo peor es que cometen el error de visitar a un viejo amigo y aliado, Shay Chesterton, que actualmente es el alcalde de San Diego. Ahora que es un político poderoso, Chesterton no quiere que nadie descubra su pasado como devorador. Atacados por un grupo de mercenarios enviados por Chesterton, el padre, la madre, el hermano y el novio de Cassandra son brutalmente exterminados y ella apenas logra escapar con vida. En la página final vemos la transformación final de Cassandra: finalmente se enamora de un chico que no es musculoso y que es extremadamente inteligente. Juntos, deciden convertirse en vegetarianos. “The Eaters” es una cautivadora historia independiente, con imágenes inquietantes y con escenas que son tan fascinantes como impactantes. El artista, Dean Ormston, captura perfectamente la amargura, el salvajismo, la sangre y la violencia, y sobre todo, la fealdad de un Estados Unidos de América que tiene muy poco que ver con la imagen idealizada que los Quills tenían en mente después de vivir en aislamiento durante 18 años.
