November Comics / Cómics de noviembre

After spending Thanksgiving in Morgan Hill, not too far from San Jose, I read last month’s comics. The Boys and Legion of Super-Heroes were very good, and the FCBD books were quite entertaining, especially Richard Fairgray’s Monster Showcase. Girl by Milligan and Fegredo is an amazing comic that I must review one day, I would choose it as the best I’ve read this year, but since it’s a reprint (from the 90s) it wouldn’t count as the best of 2020. In any case, my favorite comic of the month was Avengers: Marvels Snapshots #1, Barbara Randall Kesel writes a really touching story. And now, without further ado, here are November comics as per solicitations:

AVENGERS: MARVELS SNAPSHOT #1

Luego de pasar Thanksgiving en Morgan Hill, no muy lejos de San José, leí los cómics del mes pasado. The Boys y Legion of Super-Heroes estuvieron muy bien, y los cómics gratuitos del FCBD fueron bastante entretenidos, especialmente Monster Showcase de Richard Fairgray. Girl by Milligan y Fegredo es un cómic increíble que debo reseñar algún día, lo elegiría como lo mejor que he leído este año, pero como es una reimpresión (de los 90s) no contaría como lo mejor del 2020 En cualquier caso, mi cómic favorito del mes fue Avengers: Marvels Snapshots # 1, Barbara Randall Kesel escribe una historia realmente conmovedora. Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling # 1 - Chip Zdarsky, Anthony Oliveira & Manuel García

In 2005 Allan Heinberg forever changed the Marvel Universe with the introduction of two amazing characters: Wiccan and Hulkling. Although portraying two gay teenage superheroes as a loving couple was quite controversial amidst the most conservative sector of Marvel readers, Heinberg never gave up and turned Young Avengers not only into one of the most successful titles but also one of the most revered and admired by fans.

We all knew that Billy Kaplan (Wiccan) and Teddy Altman (Hulkling) were lovers, but due to the extremely prudish mindset of some readers, we never got to see the two of them kissing on the page in the original series. We had to wait 7 years until Heinberg wrote the miniseries Avengers: the Children’s Crusade. In 2012, Billy and Teddy kissed each other for the first time. 

The young heroes kissed again on multiple occasions on Kieron Gillen’s Young Avengers in 2013, proving that what was once considered controversial was no longer such a big taboo. However, for a gay couple their sex life was, shall we say, enshrouded in secrecy. Were they doing the dirty or not? I’m sure many fans were asking that question, and judging by the plethora of erotic fanfic art available online, many of them had found a way to answer that!

Teddy Altman (Hulkling)

In “Profane the Precious Time” (originally published in Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling # 1, September 2020), Chip Zdarsky and Anthony Oliveira write a fascinating story that revolves around Hulkling, his role as future emperor and most especially his relationship with Wiccan. Manuel Garcia does an amazing job as a penciler, providing sequences full of action but also more calmed moments, in which the characters can be seen as vulnerable and human as ever. Cam Smith is the inker and Triona Farrell the colorist, while the striking cover of this issue is by Patrick Gleason. 

The extraordinary splash page in which we see Teddy Altman laying in bed, has a unique level of realism and grace that only Garcia could’ve accomplished. There is also a strong romantic tone in the page in which Teddy and Billy are cuddling together, overlooking the city. Of course, the moment all fans were waiting for, the moment that had inspired thousands of fanfic art, is magnificently illustrated by Garcia. Marvel’s most prominent gay couple end up making love on an alien spaceship.

However, this is more than a simple sexual encounter. Zdarsky and Oliveira create a compelling story in which love between two young men is no longer a taboo, but that doesn’t make things any easier. Wiccan belongs to our world, while Hulkling has to embrace his position as the new emperor of an alien civilization. This one shot feels just as special as Young Avengers did, and only this amazing creative team would have been able to pull that off.

Aunque retratar a dos superhéroes adolescentes gays como una pareja amorosa fue bastante controversial entre el sector más conservador de los lectores de Marvel, Heinberg nunca se rindió y convirtió a Young Avengers no sólo en uno de los títulos más exitosos sino también en uno de los más venerados y admirados por los fans.

Hulkling & Wiccan

La extraordinaria página completa en la que vemos a Teddy Altman acostado en la cama, tiene un nivel único de realismo y gracia que solo García podría haber logrado. También hay un fuerte tono romántico en la página en la que Teddy y Billy se acurrucan, avistando la ciudad. Por supuesto, el momento que todos los fanáticos estaban esperando, el momento que había inspirado a miles de fanfic art, está magníficamente ilustrado por García. La pareja gay más destacada de Marvel acaba haciendo el amor en una nave espacial extraterrestre.

Sin embargo, esto es más que un simple encuentro sexual. Zdarsky y Oliveira crean una historia fascinante en la que el amor entre dos jóvenes ya no es un tabú, pero eso no facilita las cosas. Wiccan pertenece a nuestro mundo, mientras que Hulkling tiene que aceptar su posición como nuevo emperador de una civilización alienígena. Este cómic se siente tan especial como la colección de Young Avengers, y sólo este increíble equipo creativo habría podido lograr algo semejante.

October Comics / cómics de octubre

In October I went to Salt Lake City for the second time this year, so I didn’t have time to read my comics and oh boy, I sure got more this month than in previous ones! Marvel # 1 was a great first issue, even better than Marvels Snapshots Spider-Man. Strange Adventures continues to surprise just as The Boys Dear Beckie does. Norse Mythology seems to be promising, and Scumbag #1 was funny and raunchy, just up my alley. Legion of Super-Heroes is quite good. My favorite issue of the month was Marvels X #6. And now without further ado, here are October comics as per solicitations:

BATMAN WHITE KNIGHT BATMAN DAY #1 Special Ed (Net)

Just in time for Batman Day 2018 on September 15, DC reprints the sold-out first issue of the acclaimed miniseries written and illustrated by Sean Murphy! In November, instead of focusing on new releases, I saw 4 really interesting movies from over a decade ago. Let's start with Dummy (2008), directed by Matthew Thompson; it is a tragic coming of age story about two brothers who have recently become orphans after their mother passes away. Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), the older brother, acts in a compulsive and immature way, thinking only about his own gratification. His way of dealing with the loss of his mother is by taking drugs and getting drunk all the time, while having sex with as many girls as possible. The younger brother, Thomas Grant, cannot simply accept that his mother is gone, and uses a dummy, a mannequin, to pretend that the mother is still there in the house. The younger brother cleans the house, cooks the meals and reminds his older brother about his responsibilities, but after the loss of their only parental figure, the two brothers are floating adrift, emotionally lost. At its core, Dummy is a story about loss and how we deal with it, but also about how we always end up hurting the people we love the most. Intense, dramatic but also honest, Dummy is a wonderful independent British film.

Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2005), based on Annie Proulx’s short story, was a risky move at a time in which Hollywood was still reluctant about having gay men as main characters in a high-profile production. Jake Gyllenhaal (Demolition) and Heath Ledger (Lords of Dogtown) are two cowboys who are in charge of thousands of sheep, in a place called Brokeback Mountain; they live a poor and mundane life, each day as anodyne as the next, until after getting drunk one night, the two young men start fooling around and end up having sex. At first, the struggle to accept their own sexuality is made evident, and even if they try their best to deny their true feelings, to the point of getting married to Michelle Williams (Marilyn) and Anne Hathaway (Interstellar), their homosexuality is the one defining factor that rules over their lives. In a rural and conservative setting, it’s impossible for these two men to live together as a couple, and as the years go by, their relationship starts falling apart. I re-watched Brokeback Mountain after 15 years and the ending still hit me. The final scenes are some of the most heartbreaking, sad and yet realistic moments I’ve ever seen in a movie. A true masterwork by the talented Lee.

In Wah-Wah (2005), Richard E. Grant analyzes the repercussions of British colonialism in Swaziland from the point of view of a privileged British family. Gabriel Byrne (Louder Than Bombs) is the proud patriarch who becomes an alcoholic after his wife cheats on him. Grant manages to explore a difficult subject, alcoholism, without demonizing his characters; after all, this pater familias can be the most charming and inspiring man when he’s sober, but he completely loses control when drunk; this constant back and forth threatens to destroy the new life he’s trying to build next to Emily Watson, but especially the special relationship he always had with his son Nicholas Hoult (Equals), a rebellious teenager who is starting to discover girls and that has no love at all for the politics of the British empire. Wah-Wah balances extremely funny moments with painful and intense sequences. 

Frank Pierson’s Conspiracy (2001) is a historical production that revolves around a secret meeting of high ranking Nazi officers and influential figures in which they discuss the problem of the Jews, and in which eventually they come up with the blood-chilling ‘final solution’. The horror is even more tangible since this was a real meeting, and as viewers we’ll be horrified by also surprised by the cold blood, logical thinking and careful planning that goes into this final solution, which is one of history’s most terrible genocides. The protagonists are interpreted by a magnificent selection of mostly British actors, including Kenneth Branagh (Othello), Stanley Tucci (The Company You Keep), Colin Firth (Devil’s Knot) and Tom Hiddleston (Crimson Peak).

En vez de prestar atención a los estrenos, en noviembre vi 4 películas muy interesantes de hace más de una décade. Empecemos con Dummy (2008), dirigida por Matthew Thompson; esta es una trágica historia sobre la adolescencia y la madurez, que se centra en dos hermanos que recientemente se han quedado huérfanos tras la muerte de su madre. Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), el hermano mayor, actúa de manera compulsiva e inmadura, pensando solo en su propia gratificación. Su forma de lidiar con la pérdida de su madre es drogándose y emborrachándose todo el tiempo, mientras mantiene relaciones sexuales con tantas chicas como sea posible. El hermano menor, Thomas Grant, simplemente no puede aceptar que su madre ha muerto, y usa un maniquí para fingir que la madre todavía está en la casa. El hermano menor limpia la casa, cocina la comida y le recuerda a su hermano mayor sus responsabilidades, pero tras la pérdida de su figura materna, los dos hermanos están flotando a la deriva, emocionalmente perdidos. En esencia, Dummy es una historia sobre la pérdida y cómo la enfrentamos, pero también sobre cómo siempre terminamos lastimando a las personas que más queremos. Intensa, dramática pero también honesta, Dummy es una maravillosa película británica independiente.

Conspiracy (2001), de Frank Pierson, es una producción histórica que gira en torno a una reunión secreta de oficiales nazis de alto rango y figuras influyentes en la que discuten el problema de los judíos, y en la que finalmente llegan a la escalofriante 'solución final'. El horror es aún más tangible ya que esta fue una reunión real, y como espectadores nos horrorizaremos también por la sangre fría, el pensamiento lógico y la planificación cuidadosa que implica esta solución final, que es uno de los genocidios más terribles de la historia. Los protagonistas son interpretados por una magnífica selección de actores, en su mayoría británicos, entre los que se encuentran Kenneth Branagh (Othello), Stanley Tucci (The Company You Keep), Colin Firth (Devil’s Knot) y Tom Hiddleston (Crimson Peak).

Planetary # 0 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

I was convinced I had read every Planetary story ever published, but turns out I was wrong. The same thing happened to me with Young Avengers in 2013, I started with the first issue and I didn’t know there was a special preview that I ended up acquiring at a later date. So in both cases I ended up reading what would be issue # 0 a long time after I had read everything.

“Nuclear Spring” was originally published as a backup story in Gen13 # 33 (September 1998), published by Image. That is certainly something interesting, as DC was still in the process of acquiring Wildstorm, an imprint that was part of Image / Homage Comics (a subsidiary of Jim Lee’s Aegis Entertainment) at the time. Planetary # 1 is announced as a new title coming out in 4 months, and there is even a beautiful pencil drawing by Cassaday as part of the advertising. However, seems like the acquisition process took longer than expected, and exactly a year later, DC would be publishing Planetary # 1, under the independent imprint of Wildstorm (which disappeared in 2010).

“Sometimes, ordinary people uncover things that are best left covered. Sometimes, things best left covered emerge into ordinary life and do not have the world’s best interests at heart. These are times when Planetary arrive -invited or not…”, that’s what Planetary is about. And certainly, this first story shows us the Archeologists of the Impossible doing what they do best. 

Warren Ellis comes up with a captivating story about a scientist who has created a “quantum box” for “rotating things out of reality”. However, when they test this new invention, the scientist must save the life of the woman he loves, who has accidentally stumbled onto the testing site. Exactly as it happens with the Hulk, the scientist receives the full impact of the explosion and he transforms himself into a monster far more inhuman than the Hulk.  

Cassaday’s art is wonderful, although not as depurated as it would become later, he’s still transitioning from his late 90s style, which we were able to see in titles like Ka-Zar or Union Jack. However, the cover is absolutely exquisite. Just the design and the composition are miles ahead of anything else that was being published at the time, and Cassaday’s attention to details brings a unique sense of elegance to the cover. Truly magnificent!

Y ciertamente, esta primera historia nos muestra a los Arqueólogos de lo Imposible haciendo lo que mejor saben hacer.

Warren Ellis presenta una historia cautivadora sobre un científico que ha creado una "caja cuántica" para "rotar cosas fuera de la realidad". Sin embargo, cuando prueban este nuevo invento, el científico debe salvar la vida de la mujer que ama, quien accidentalmente ha irrumpido en el sitio de prueba. Exactamente como sucede con Hulk, el científico recibe todo el impacto de la explosión y se transforma en un monstruo mucho más inhumano que Hulk.

El arte de Cassaday es maravilloso, aunque no tan depurado como lo sería más tarde, todavía está en transición en su estilo de finales de los 90s, que pudimos ver en títulos como Ka-Zar o Union Jack. Sin embargo, la portada es absolutamente exquisita. Sólo el diseño y la composición están muy por encima de cualquier otra cosa que se publicara en aquellos años, y la atención de Cassaday por los detalles aporta una sensación única de elegancia a la portada. ¡Una verdadera maravilla!
